    My grampa used one of these when i was a kid in the early 80's to power the pump for his air compressor in his shop. It was kind of a homemade rig. My dad said he used to have 3-4 of these engines around the farm when he milked cows. Later on my grampa gave up farming and turned his place into an auto salvage business, he was a resourceful guy.

    I love listening to these old engines run. It's like a blast from the past. So simple, so basic. Back when life was a lot simpler in many ways.

    I had a friend who use to collect hit and miss motors of long ago. Thanks for posting, perhaps they will make a come back.

    saw one of these running an ice cream machine at a fair. Because of the sound of the engine, the stand's name was Poppin' John's Ice Cream

    I have this almost exact identical John Deere hit and miss motor if not the exact same one. Mine runs great by the way. I love the way it sounds when it runs.

    Their good little engines. Got one hooked up to a ice cream maker as long as you keep your hands clear your ok. Got mine caught up in it when it started not a good day.

    Good man for hitting that crank in with your boot... I see people working around them with the crank out and I just cringe at the thought of what could happen to them...

    I have inherited one of these. Trying to figure it out. It ran a few years ago. So first dump question where goes the gas go? I checked the oil. It seems fine.

    • @Hinnerk79
      @Hinnerk79  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The gas tank is underneath the engine. The filler is on the back of the engine base.

    How far did you open fuel valve/jet to get it to start and run? You totally blocked the view when setting and adjusting valve.

    Very interesting.....several years ago during a July 4th celebration some Amish young people set up a home made ice cream stand and they were using a small gas engines that looked something like that one to run the ice cream churn. One was all painted and looked like new the other one ran but was not refinished.
    Now I'm beginning to think those were hit and miss engines.

    Ok. I am new to hit and miss engines. This may sound like a stupid question to some but what type of fuel do these machines use? gasoline or diesel? or both?

    • @evelynsmith9690
      @evelynsmith9690 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +FireFighter#47 it was gas but sometimes they used diesel and that was mostly used for farming because the strength of the engine was good for the machines.

    • @bobwhite3777
      @bobwhite3777 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Dillon Smith kerosene some times. Also I have never seen a diesel hit n miss before I have seen vids that say they are but they all sound throttle governed. Can you show me one that is.

    The problem with a lot of those motors is oiling. They will run for a couple minutes on a stand but would never survive running for sustained periods.

    It's missing a few things
    Intercooler
    Turbocharger
    Fuel InjectIon
    Overdrive 0.2 to 1
    Take off the choke permanently
    and HAVE THE Intake valve open longer for more air and fuel so longer intake valve duration
    also better cylinder heads
    These are for if you want to increase horsepower and torque. Have a nice day from West Chester,Pennsylvania
