- Hey all, its that time of year again for me to get ready for our local farm show. This year I wanted to dig out one of our engines that hasn't been out for many moons. Can I get it out in time? Does it even still run? Watch the video and find out!!!
Check out the Should Run With Gas Podcast!

What a thing of beauty, love listening to the sound of these oil girls.
As do I!
you are very fortunate to be able to work along side of your father
You are amaizing how you look at an engine and figure out right away what the problem is and fix it.....Just a little spring and she's up and running!
I have lots and lots of time spent around these old engines. Might have picked up a thing or two 😆
I had a 6hp Alamo built in 1919 for several years. Loved to hear it run!
Once the engine is really warm you can switch to kerosene as kero has another ignition-temp compared to gasoline.
Nice video. Really liked it.
You are correct, thank you!
These hit-n-miss engines were still in use in Wyoming's oil fields running pump jacks into the 1980's. They ran on well gas.
Beautiful engine, nice restoration 👍
Thank you!
Very cool! I really like those big Witte engines! Can't wait to see the video of the show!
Thank you! Hope to have it out soon!
Thats a cool shop. I could spend a weekend just looking at all that stuff
I’ve built models of all kinds most of my life and I was just about to buy a model of a hit and miss engine but then I found your channel. Why not just buy the real thing and rebuild it? So, now I’m on the lookout for an antique hit and miss engine.
I did wonder why you didn’t want it all freshly painted and shiny, but I get it now, looks awesome!
foi dificil mas valeu a recuperação parabens.Limeira SP Brasil
Now that's a beautiful bit of kit
Thank you!
In my garage I make sure there is an aisle from back to front and space to get around other projects near the doors.
Great job. Thank you 😊
Love these old engines. Will be interesting to see more of the steam engine.
At some point in the near future, I'll have some content on it!
They all have their own personalities don’t they ? LOL ! Nice engine, thanks for showing it .
That that do! Thank you!
Absolutely beautiful!
Thank you!
Man that's a shame having a nice car lift you can't use
Isn't it though lol
Bonjour
Toujours de belles vidéos et de beaux moteurs 👍
Thank you!
Another great video, thanks!
Thank you!
A SOHIO gas station sign! How I wish they were back!
i know where there is one completely persevered its located in Steubenville OH on Sunset Blvd all original building and signage worth a visit
thanks to your detailed video work on this engine, i finally 'get' the governing part for the exhaust valve and intake and the way it works for these engines.... nice work
I will see you at the show.
same problem on my Stover Hit & Miss Thanks :)
Thank you!
That thing is so so sweet!
lol .. one way to get the shop clean and organized
So, let me get this straight:
If i want my children to help me clean my workshop i have to bury some nice hardware in the far corner. Got it :-)
I had a Nova engine that was a small vertical cylinder until my stepdad had a clean-out of our shop and he sold it on me I think it was about 5 hp or less it used to run excellently it was a hit-and-miss
The fact that your pallet Jack matches your "Japanese Horse"...
Nice thanks
Thank you too!
Very observant to spot the slope was affecting the governor holding the exhaust open. Excellent, job getting the Witte out of the workshop. Interesting to see the steam engine work underway. Do your USA regulations mean that you will have to have a boiler test? great video.
A front end alignment would be good.
the witte engine runs good 😊😊 U should paint the engine it would look alot better the paint color is dark green close 2 forest green there should be a paint no 4 it U will have 2 see U don't see many of those engines head type or headless I did see 1 many years ago I have no idea 💡😊 where that engine was from another fellow see the engine long and got at a show it ran very good 😊😊 OMG 11 3O 2O23
I'm a fan of keeping them original. I believe this engine has a good bit of paint left on it still. Just needs cleaned up. They are great running engines!
I've had several witte engines over the years. At 1 time I had 127 engines
It's an addiction!
@@Cast_Iron_Curiosities nothing more satisfying than taking a peice of rusted cast iron that not 1 thing turns and a few weeks it's a running and operating engine
slowly but surely
I'm so jealous of your dad's shop I can shit myself. In fact, I think I did because my wife just gave me a look of questionably apprehension and disgust.
One reason I would never buy a lift where lines and cables go across the floor it's ALWAYS in the way!!
I am always shocked at how quiet these are compared to modern engines
Your Dad's shop looks like mine!! Too much stuff and not enough Shop!! lol
NICE ENGINE
Thank you!
I'd like to see at least one video on the Steam Engine.
I should have one on it by the end of 2023!
Almost like these have a colds, they keep sneezing.
Kansas City, MO?!?
I wonder where they were located
I thought heated seats were a new invention.
Idda had to clean my shorts after that backfire!! Lol
Are you allowed to have a riveted boiler on the traction engine ? Some authorities insist on welded boilers now .
im just wondering... why does it only seem to fire every 10th or 11th cycle?
is this like a 20 stroke engine? Seems to be sneezing about every 20 pumps or so
By the air charge being sucked in you can tell that old girl has great exhaust sound. Usually the big gulps have big bangs!
That they do!
CAR DOLLIES !!!
She does have a bark.
You're the one that put the camera there! 🙄
Hey there. Just found your channel. Very cool. A bit of a mystery to me yet.
Question: could one of these engines run a generator for a light duty power source to supply a house?
wouldn't the steam from the hopper steam your rear-end if you sat on that seat ?🤣
One would think!
lol...i have a big joe forklift too
Nice engine, what farm show was it at?
Country Crossroads Education of Yesterday. I just posted a video of the show.
Mycket jobb! Hade det inte varit mindre jobb att skruva bort axlarna på motorn å dra ut den med två pallyftare?
do you find all your engines on auction? is facebook marketplace a decent place to find stuff like this?
Auctions, marketplace, and word of mouth are all ways I end up with my stuff.
When your starting it r u pushing the exhaust valve down slightly to get rid of some of compression? We have a 4 ho and that old girl has a ton of compression i can barley turn it over any suggestions?
I'm pushing down the intake valve to bypass the compression to get the piston to a position right before ignition. As you know, these engines have a ton of compression!
Oh I know we have a 4 hp witte that takes all I have in me to turn over
I have one major question. When under a load, will these hit/miss engines maintain a constant RPM?
Yes they do. Instead of firing every few rotations, when they are under a load they fire on every rotation. This is what keeps the speed constant.
Just wandering what you use for the oil on the bearings i have an engine with the the same set-up
Normally, just a 30w non detergent oil.
Normally, 30w non detergent oil.
What year is it
It's in the late teens if I remember correctly.
In order to get this out you need to be smarter than the person who designed it. COME ON MAN! THIS IS THE 20TH CENTURY!! Take the wheel off and use a roll jack to maneuver the thing!!!
I don't get what the release valve gizmo is doing every 8-9 cycles...wtf? Sounds like a COPD patient.
Hit and miss...only at idle.
I was wondering the same! I’ve never seen one actually doing work but I bet it’s firing all the time. I bet tuning them is totally different under load too, maybe you just never let it shut off once it’s running and loaded?
TH-cam is blocking me for using an adblocker. Having all videos interrupted 2-3 times and not wishing to meet Ukranian women nor shop at Walmart is far too annoying. So I'll be unsubscribing to the 30-some channels I follow and finding other entertainment. Best of luck with your channel; I really enjoyed it.
Hate to see you leave!
Having to watch a couple commercials on a free video that pays the content creator is a small prive to pay for the entertainment.
Wow you can't afford TH-cam premium I mean I am nowhere near wealthy but I can afford TH-cam premium
Nothin’ wrong with Ukranian women! I’ve met a few of them 😂
@@Barnagh1How did you find out they were women? 😆
Carhartt has gone woke btw
That... that was your contribution to society seventeen hours ago. Out of 83 comments that was the best you could muster.
Interesting. Who asked?
Stepud question forklift
Never heard of her.
Apart ftom your wonderful video i was also admireing that lovely clonking from your car !!
Met me guess CV joint or differential on its last legs lol 😆
😆 I hear that a lot. It's actually a rear-end locker clicking on the curve.
what dynosaurs....!
amazing engineering from back before my time. but love it
Glad you like it!
Your the man! Another great video!
Thank you!
This are the learning things for me ........a littel spring was the problem 😂. I learn a lot from your video's thank you.
Greetings from the Netherlands
Glad you learned something! Thank you!
We found an old engine exactly like this one out in the woods near our house which used to be a very old farm. My father brought it up to the house to tinker with it and called it a: "one-lunger." This was over 60 years ago, so it wasn't old enough to be considered an "antique," but old enough to not be worth the effort to fix it up and running. It sat out behind the house until I left for college in 1971. What happened to it after that, I don't know, but it's great to see what it might have looked like in a rescued condition. Thanks!
