One little detail I always enjoyed in this movie: the first time we see the doctor interview with Samara, they ask "You don't want to hurt anyone, do you?" and she replies "But I do, and I'm sorry. It won't stop" - but she says it in this sad, apologetic tone, almost like she's saying "I'm sorry that I keep hurting people without wanting to, I can't seem to stop it from happening." Yeah, the first time we see the interview, we see it through Rachel's perspective (one that we, as the audience, have been made to adopt as well). At this point, she already has this preconception that the parents (and even the other islanders) were awful to their daughter and that the child was a victim of misunderstanding and persecution. When we see it again the second time, it's unaltered and no longer biased, and yeah, you realize then that she's absolutely not sorry and enjoys hurting people. Samarra was always evil. Ignoring the sequel (what a piece of trash that thing was anyway...), I always felt the Morgans had managed to find a way to conceive using some unorthodox mean found in the Orient, but that this came at cost. A "Be careful what you wish for" kind of situation. They got their baby, but it's pretty much evil incarnate. In any case, I really love the commentary made about the media. I love it when you say the character’s lines before they get a chance to. The reading skills are just that good! I actually liked Noah, but you not giving him the time of day made this way funnier 🤣 that’s your specialty, after all!
I think that *might* have been intentional on the moviemakers' parts. I mean, Noah was going to die, and they wanted us to like him a *bit* but not *that* much, ya know?
Noah was actually worse in the japanese original where the girl he was mentoring was like a student of his which kind of came off as more sleezy. Here I do like Noah as a guy who just never wanted responsibility but you also dislike him for leaving his kid and Rachel
I swear she’s psychic, not only does she say the lines with the characters but she’ll say comments jokingly in the beginning that turn out to be correct later in the movie
So the original draft of the movie there was a subplot about Rachel doing a story on a child abuser and he was the one that she ended up showing the video to at the end. In the scene when Noah dies, when he lifts his cup which left a ring on the newspaper, you can briefly see the man they ended up showing the video to. The storyline was cut because of pacing issues and to shorten the movie runtime. Also (random tidbit) the guy who owns the lodge, that was doing the card tricks, watched the tape before Rachel and there’s a deleted scene where Noah discovers his body on a boat in the middle of the nearby lake.
Samara had the supernatural ability to burn imagies into minds of people as well as objects (the tree on the wall of the barn, the video tape and those x-ray looking photos that left the doctors confused) when her mom saw those horrible visions in her head she thought she was going crazy and blamed samara so she put her in the barn near the horses. which is why they went crazy and jumped off cliffs because she was showing them horrible scary stuff. this also happened to the people in the island. eventually her mom couldn't take it anymore and pushed her down the well. samara survived the fall but starved to death and broke her fingernails trying to climb it. eventually when she died, her spirit latched onto the nearest thing it could find...the video tape. now she projected those horrible images into one video and when you watch it you have 7 days until you die (just like her) but if you show it to someone else the 'curse' will skip you, that if the person you show it to shows it to someone else if not, it'll go back to you. and that's the lore of the ring. pretty good stuff. scared the shit out of me when i first saw it at 9 years old and traumatized me for years (couldn't sleep without my parents next to me for months)
@@lessismore8533 oh for sure, my parents were stricly against us (my siblings and i) watching horror movies but i used to sneak up at night after they slept and watch em. and that's how i stumbled upon the ring. it took me years and years to finally be able sleep by myself and in the dark. good stuff. 😅

Fun fact: This is an American remake of a film called Ringu that I believe came out in 1998, and depending on who you ask it's one of those situations where some prefer the original over the American one. However, before the films, Samara (or Sadako in the original) and Ringu started with a series of novels from Japan. I seem to recall it's one of those cases where the first one was considered really good and progressively the series just got weirder and weirder. For example, the third book called "Loop" involved virtual reality...gives you an idea of how strange it gets. Also, that book was technically adapted into a video game as well from what I recall, but it wasn't any good from what I remember. Samara/Sadako would also eventually have a film where she fights the creepy girl from The Grudge (or Ju-On as it's called in Japan). Not gonna lie it's bonkers to me that it's possible to make that much content (and more if you count sequel films and stuff like that) out of this one concept, and yet here we are lol. I love this movie though, there is something about it that is very bleak, and nothing feels very bright in terms of colors. Everything feels constantly wet and cold the whole time and it has this way of making you feel that the whole dang time. Plus, the imagery of her coming out of the tv is probably one of the most iconic things that 2000's horror gave us. Anyways, great reaction as always, and looking forward to what comes next. If you're taking any suggestions at all for in the future, I would definitely recommend checking out the original Jacob's Ladder when you get the chance. Also, there's Lake Mungo if you want a little hidden gem that is a bit more modern-ish. Both films are pretty sad though so brace yourself with some tissues just in case.
I still remember seeing this movie in theaters with my parents at age 13 on opening weekend. I knew nothing about this movie, my parents just said it looked really scary. When Samara came out of the TV at the end, the entire theater ERUPTED in screams. The shouting during that part was INSANE lol
Absolutely ADORE this film! It's so gorgeously shot, and Naomi is incredible! Also, if you want to be made even more afraid of the dark, watch Lake Mungo and/or Pulse (2001). I literally slept with the lights on after watching both as an adult man, and I'd consider myself a PhD in horror 😭
I remember as a kid it never set in that Aiden was Rachel's son. He always so independent and he always called her by her first name. He always felt like some random kid who lived with her.
Rachel in 2005's "The Ring Two," actually asked Aiden that question why he never calls her mom, mommy, ma, and Aiden said he calls his mom "Rachel" because, "Rachel is more of your personality."
I actually took a break from rewatching your Die Hard reaction to catch this reaction. I don't find this movie as scary as I used to but I still really like it. I think it's a very well done movie.
Yes! Years later, I’m STILL impressed by how well-made this film is. From the acting to the editing to the cinematography, it’s definitely the best American remake of a Japanese horror movie. I mean, there’s a reason it’s so iconic and why all the other American remakes were trying to copy it lol
"Do you not have a smarter man that you can call?"🤣 So fun to watch this through your perspective. I live in the PNW where the skies are mostly that gray/green overcast shade that this movie is drenched in, so this one felt so close to home when it was released. Much like your sister, I was a lil apprehensive in my surroundings after seeing this in the theater 😳
I feel like the opener of this really inspired the scream 4 (stab) opening scene/s. I love seeing the subtle nods and nuances to other horror in movies. This film is a classic, I was so young when I first watched it I didn’t quite grasp the context or plot- I didn’t rewatch until I saw the remake Rings or w/e it’s called.

Love how this channel has me now protective over you lmao I can't have you more traumatized from these movies haha.
Your sister's reaction to The Ring was my reaction to The Grudge 😱 I didn't sleep well for at least a week. But you'll need to brave it before Scary Movie 4 😉

"Eugh, it's kinda sending a chill through my spine." Nobody does ghosts quite like the Japanese. If you ever get in a foreign horror movie mood, the original versions of The Ring (Ringu), The Grudge (Ju-On: The Grudge), and Pulse (Kairo) are all great introductions to Japanese horror. There's also One Missed Call, which is pretty decent.

i feel like every decade we get one truly great horror movie that changes the game completely. 'the ring' can be seen as commentary on the dread of the proliferation of technology and the negative aspects of spreading information to the masses this way. it is the first horror movie that uses technology as the killer. the metaphor still works today, with the constant, rapid spread of misinformation on the internet that leads to real life consequences.
One thing (of many) I love about your channel is I always rewatch the movies you react to, if I haven't seen it in a long time, before I watch your reaction. It's been easily 10 years since I spent time with Samara and I love it so much more than I used to. The mystery, quietness, twists and turns, 18 year old me clearly wasn't mature enough for this one, so glad I've discovered I now love it!
This was the first movie I saw as a whole ADULT that I lost sleep over. I could not do laundry (my roommate did the laundry) for fear that Samara would climb out of the washing machine and to this day I can't stand the sound of an old telephone ringing
I saw it as an adult as well. Scared the crap out of me! When I saw scary movie 3 I wasn’t expecting it and I was traumatized. Even though that movie is a parody it still scared me.
I cant be alone on feeling like Hereditary was the The Ring of this generation. The Ring was the last horror suspense that actually scared me. So when I saw Hereditary I thought thank you for taking it up a notch. Great movies. Great reactions to both of 2 of the scariest films ever made.
There was a sub plot that was removed from the Final Cut about a child murderer on death row whose story Rachel is covering. In the alternate ending, it’s heavily implied that she is going to show the tape to him to save her son. This character can be seen at the end in the newspaper clipping that Noah leaves a ring around just before his death
This movie was and STILL IS MY TEN OUTTA TEN Scared me for soo many years I was a kid when this came out and saw it by ACCIDENT ☹️ traumatized But I’m happy you reviewed it ❤
In the original Ring (which you should definitely watch as it’s even BETTER than this one it’s called Ringu and it’s from 1998), the little girl Sadako was so evil and crunchy that the mom was kinda justified in killing her she was just a ruthless child
I actually think that the remake was so much better. Way better executed. However I love sarah Michelle Gellar but the grudge wasn't as a good as Ju On
@@whalewolf7477 this is hilarious cause I actually have the exact opposite opinion 😂😂 I didn’t like the original Ju-on as much as the remake and I liked the original Ringu better than the remake
Wasn't Sadako a grown woman in Ringu? I feel like the American remake made the image of "evil little ghost girl" popular. I think Ringu and The Ring both have their ups and downs. The Ring plays more like an investigation movie, which I think lends a lot of credibility to the evil tape. The cursed tape in Ringu is a pretty silly idea, and the way they explain the psychic stuff was pretty corny. But if The Ring was as quiet as Ringu for the first half. It would be the perfect Ring movie in my opinion. The way Ringu is almost always dead silent and then has the most fucking weird and distorted sounds was so creepy.
Hahahaha. This film was so amazing; I remember seeing it at nine year's old and just... loving it, despite hating "scary" films. And I hope you watch the sequel, which some hate... but I love it. It's so well done!!
The part at 9:18 scared the ever living flying fudge out of me, so bad to the point where every time I closed my eyes I would see it. This movie is the most terrifying movie I've ever seen, I can't even bring myself to the point of watching the original, Ringu. One of my most vivid memories as a kid was watching little miss Samara coming out of that TV and let me tell you, I've never in my life screamed and cried so hard. This one was traumatizing, I was pretty certain I needed therapy because it messed me up so bad. But as an adult, I appreciate and adore your review, it adds a little comedic affect for me and helps to ease the trauma this movie gave me.
Always enjoy going down memory lane and seeing new insights with your reactions. As others have pointed out; Ring is a remake of the Japanese film Ringu. Others in the same genre of Japanese remakes are: The Grudge with SMG, The Eye with Jessica Alba, and Dark Water with Jennifer Connelly. They can be hit or miss for some. They are decent. Dark Water I remember the least. Lol Watching your reaction to the Ring made me think you should also check out Poltergeist or The Others with Nicole Kidman if you haven't seen those. They hold up!
Glad this wasn't as traumatizing as you feared! I don't know if you came across this when looking into this movie, but this one is an adaptation of a Japanese film. Most of the scenes are one-for-one recreations from the Japanese film. There's a ton of sequels to the Japanese film, and Sadako (Samara) is pretty much Japan's version of Jason or Michael Myers. This film also kicked off a small wave of these Japanese adaptation films like The Grudge and One Missed Call.
Even as someone who enjoys horror Hereditary legit gave me nightmares 😂 last movie that spooked me that bad was The Exorcist, growing up my mom would threaten to make us watch it if we misbehaved. I can laugh now, even enjoy it, but the mere sight of vhs case was enough to keep me out of the room 😂
Samara was always a disturbed child. She used Rachel to free her soul so now she can really unleash havoc. She doesn’t wanna stop hurting people she enjoys doing it because she’s a cursed child and now she has left her mark on Aiden so she can get close to Rachel who she claims is her mommy now, or at least wants her to be her mommy.
@@lavenderbambi3501they say that in the Ring Two, which for some reason is a really lame, boring movie. Considering the Japanese director of the original directed it, I don’t know why it turned out so not scary.

The story about your sister... I totally understand. The Ring absolutely fucked me up. My friends and I just went to see it knowing it was a horror movie, but without ever seeing a trailer or anything so we had no idea what to expect. That night, after we all went to our homes, we all sat up staring at the TV and wanting to call each other, but not wanting to scare each other by making the phone ring. So we all just sat there in frozen terror in our houses that night. I also wanted nothing to do with water, I didn't even want to take a shower. I never have and never will allow a copy of that movie into my home. I'm also not watching this entire review because I don't want to see any of the movie, but you mentioned in your Hereditary review that you had a story about The Ring and I just wanted to watch your intro. Now I'm out!

BTW if you ever want to watch a 'pass the curse on before it kills you' kinda movie .. It Follows is an amazing movie and I know you can handle it. Kisses love!
I remember I saw one where a man went into his house and was standing outside his bedroom door. He turned the light on and looked down due to the stuff in his hands. He heard his light turn off. He looked up and turned the light back on and looked spooked. Stared at the light switch silently and suddenly a red shriveled arm quickly turned the light off again. Needless to say he didn't go into his bedroom.
You should definitely react to the new horror movie smile! It’s surprisingly very good with great jump scares! Also I love watching your videos they make my day! 😁
Smile wouldn’t exist without movies like Ring or even It Follows. It HEAVILY borrows from those films. It’s pretty obvious Parker the director is a fan of those films. I don’t mind Smile but I hate all the hype it got for being so derivative.
I saw this in theatres when I was 16, and Idky but that scene of the daughter in the closet looking like she had a stroke from hell had me shooketh for the rest of the film. Lol something about quick flashes of horror that do that to me. The exorcist was similar when I saw the rerelease in theatres in 2000
I like it a lot more now, but I remember watching this when I was about 17 or so and thinking it wasn't a very good movie... and then being unable to sleep that night and being VERY ANNOYED that a movie I thought wasn't very good was creeping me out enough to keep me awake 😂
Your big sister story reminded me of when my big sis went to see The Good Son. It shocked her so much! I would love it if you watched that one - Elijah Wood & Mac Culkin.

"Why did you wear black to the White Party?"
"Why is she dressed like it's 1899?"
LOL! Alanda, you never fail to amuse with your commentary. I was so excited to see you had watched this movie. Of course I already have a bias because I find the actor who plays the douche father, Martin Henderson, to be very attractive. It's sad when he suffers his fate at the end. If you lived in the same city as me I'd ask you to a coffee to chat about movies. :) And this might sound a bit cheesy but when I do my freelance work from home I sometimes listen to your reaction videos to inspire and relax me. LOL.
😂😂😂😂
Also (random tidbit) the guy who owns the lodge, that was doing the card tricks, watched the tape before Rachel and there’s a deleted scene where Noah discovers his body on a boat in the middle of the nearby lake.
amazing, thank you for the fun facts....
She saved her son PERIODT that’s what mothers do.
Its still surprising to know that Hans Zimmer did the musical score for this.
He rarely does horror films too. He should do those more often I think!
i know!! this was an excellent and eire score!
That’s cus it’s the Rung! It’s a classic! He wouldn’t do just any film. He’s too talented to waste his time
“Oh a child.” My reaction every time a family comes into my job.
Lol 9 was too young to be watching the Ring
@@lessismore8533 oh for sure, my parents were stricly against us (my siblings and i) watching horror movies but i used to sneak up at night after they slept and watch em. and that's how i stumbled upon the ring. it took me years and years to finally be able sleep by myself and in the dark. good stuff. 😅
I was even YOUNGER when I saw it, I think 7? My mom was SUPER strict about what I watched...an aunt and uncle of mine were very much NOT 😅 so I saw a lot of scary movies at my cousin's house 😬 and, of course, they had a well right outside my cousin's bedroom window 🫠 this movie haunted me for almost a decade 😂😭
The ring was a SOILD choice! And don’t worry hunny even us horror vets all have our ONE film that kinda sticks with us! Happy to be on this horror journey with you❤️
Like insidious Chile 😂❤ had me sleeping with the lights on for a few days
@@MerakiKulture omg I remember watching that in my room in the middle of the night, the scene when she sees that man upstairs oooooo. Now that I’m thinking about it that move has a TON of unsettling scenes haha
Grudge for me. I saw it as a kid. Was seeing that child's creepy pale face in every dark corner.
Yes I will watch just about any type of horror movie but 13 Ghost is where I draw the line.
@@MerakiKulture Imagine if you watched ''Lights out'' you'd want to have lights for a reason
“If I saw that horse freaking out I would know that she’s either evil or evil adjacent” 💀💀💀
“You’re at a skewl”😂😂😂😂 love your videos. Always sit back with my blanket and snacks and watch with you
Fun fact: This is an American remake of a film called Ringu that I believe came out in 1998, and depending on who you ask it's one of those situations where some prefer the original over the American one.
Yes I love the whole Ring franchise
“eye ball no.. FINGERS” had me dead😭😂
When i am having a bad day i literally watch one of your vids to cheer me up ❤️
I still remember seeing this movie in theaters with my parents at age 13 on opening weekend. I knew nothing about this movie, my parents just said it looked really scary. When Samara came out of the TV at the end, the entire theater ERUPTED in screams. The shouting during that part was INSANE lol
Lol I was 12 in 2002 and I’m also old enough to remember how big the Ring was
"I never seen a b*tch walk into a room HAIR first, VERY upsetting" DEADDD.
“Girl please say something, he thinks you’re dead down there.”
Rachel whispering quietly: “i’m here” 😂😂😂
Alanda over here singing like she in glee club and I’m here for it😂
This channel’s dry sense of humor is actually underrated as fuck. You earned yourself a sub!
OMG pulse! I haven’t heard that film in forever
I remember as a kid it never set in that Aiden was Rachel's son. He always so independent and he always called her by her first name. He always felt like some random kid who lived with her.
I interpreted that as some sort of detachment.
Your reaction to one of the most infamous jump scares ever 😂😂😂😂
Don’t worry, that closet got ALL of us
"Do you not have a smarter man that you can call?"🤣 So fun to watch this through your perspective.
I had the same experience as your big sis when I saw it in the theater. It wrecked me.
Also, please sing more on the channel. You have an impressive voice!
Martin Henderson, the actor that plays Noah is also the actor that played Wayne in "X".
Watching these videos brings me so much peace because of your warm beautiful spirit! & when you started talking about the horse I immediately yelled at my computer screen "look away sweet Alanda, you don't want to see what happens to the sweet baby horse!!" Love how this channel has me now protective over you lmao I can't have you more traumatized from these movies haha.
Your sister's reaction to The Ring was my reaction to The Grudge 😱 I didn't sleep well for at least a week. But you'll need to brave it before Scary Movie 4 😉
Girl you are HILARIOUS hahahaha this movie has traumatised me since I was 13, I'm 25 now and still can't watch it in full, but your commentary made it so much easier lmaooooo
I was 13 when the movie came out so must’ve been like 4 back then or something
It's one of the main plots in Scary Movie 3 though! Which I highly recommend. The second and third are tied as the best ones in my opinion.
3 & 4 😂
The cinematography of this movie is soooo stunning
"Eugh, it's kinda sending a chill through my spine." Nobody does ghosts quite like the Japanese. If you ever get in a foreign horror movie mood, the original versions of The Ring (Ringu), The Grudge (Ju-On: The Grudge), and Pulse (Kairo) are all great introductions to Japanese horror. There's also One Missed Call, which is pretty decent.
While not Japanese, The Wailing and Incantation are pretty amazing Asian horror movies also.
The Woman in Black was also a good movie
@@xen0bia I love that you brought them up. They're both amazing. Incantation is my favorite of the two. They did Asian horror crossed with found footage _perfectly_
That open closet reaction was priceless 😂
you have become one of my comfort creators like I literally watch your horror reactions every night 💖
The ring movie did a number on me as a kid and gave me an irrational fear of static TV
Did you also question if you were going to die in 7 days?
LOVE LOVE LOVE this movie. It’s such a classic
This movie gave me me nightmares when I was 10. I couldn't watch the second one until I was an adult because I was scared senseless of the first one 😂. The closet moment in the beginning lives rent free in my head 😵😵😵
Now that you’ve seen this- you can watch scary movie 3, which is the one that parodies this film. You’re soothing demeanor and fortitude to keep it real always brightens my day! Can’t wait for the next video!
Cindy your tv is leaking
i feel like every decade we get one truly great horror movie that changes the game completely.
This movie came out around the same time as The Grudge. You should definitely get watch that one too. same vibes
Yesss I love and missed you! Needed this to make my entire week better ❤❤❤
"I don't think you're gonna Johnny Appleseed your way into survival."
Ironically, that's *exactly* how you survive.
I cant be alone on feeling like Hereditary was the The Ring of this generation. The Ring was the last horror suspense that actually scared me. So when I saw Hereditary I thought thank you for taking it up a notch. Great movies. Great reactions to both of 2 of the scariest films ever made.
Facts but dont watch the sequels lmao
Alanda “Has this tragedy made y’all a family now?
Me “oh sweet Jesus, Alanda turn the film off now!!!!”
the scene with the horse always kills me... Rachel fully agitated that horse all on her own lmao
This movie was and STILL IS MY TEN OUTTA TEN
Scared me for soo many years
I was a kid when this came out and saw it by ACCIDENT ☹️ traumatized
But I’m happy you reviewed it ❤
The Ring (+ Signs & 8 Mile) is required viewing for Scary Movie 3, so it's good you got it out of the way.
8 mile being the scariest of the group
Alanda, you are so charismatic that even the intro is super entertaining. Thanks for everything. Love from
Chile!
In the original Ring (which you should definitely watch as it’s even BETTER than this one it’s called Ringu and it’s from 1998), the little girl Sadako was so evil and crunchy that the mom was kinda justified in killing her she was just a ruthless child
Completely disagree, i think Ringu is really not that good, it's actually pretty boring. One of the rare cases where the American remake is better.
@@enriquesanchez9016 I also completely disagree. I think the original was scarier and had a more foreboding atmosphere. But to each their own.
“Why is that centipede so big, why is that goat limpin, EYEBALL?!” 😂😂😂
The Ring is one of the greatest horror films ever made. Great reaction! 👍🏿
Exactly
You're scream when the cut to how she looked in the closet 😂😂😂 plus the quiet "I'm sorry" after. Omg you're such a gift!
I listen to your playlist all night
She doesn’t wanna stop hurting people she enjoys doing it because she’s a cursed child and now she has left her mark on Aiden so she can get close to Rachel who she claims is her mommy now, or at least wants her to be her mommy.
where did she claim rachel to be her mommy?
@@lavenderbambi3501 In the ring two she wants her to be her mommy plus that mark on Aiden is there to show she wants to use Aidens body as possession.
@@lavenderbambi3501they say that in the Ring Two, which for some reason is a really lame, boring movie. Considering the Japanese director of the original directed it, I don’t know why it turned out so not scary.
best commentary on youtube, never fails to make me laugh 😭
🙏🏾🥹💛 thank you lovely
My mom and older sister and I went to see this when it was in theaters, it scared my sister Annie(RIP) so badly that for three months whenever she had to use the bathroom she made me sit outside the door so she would feel safe, so funny both our older sisters were so terrified by it. A perfect example that PG-13 movies can be terrifying. Crazy how long ago, rest in peace Annie Clapper, you existed and were beautiful and mom and I miss you everyday. 11/18/87-8/6/21💔
PS. This movie is also one of the few times the American remake was better than the original Japanese film and do not watch the sequels they are TERRIBLE.
The Japanese version had sequels, too, though.
@@EntertainmentFan11 didn't watch them, felt like anything extra would just take away from the greatness of the first one, because the American sequels were absolute trash.

I live for the days Alanda gets into the 'Psycho' franchise and 'The Omen' trilogy.... her commentary is gold.
I love how you pointed out the parentification of the kid! Watching this makes me wanna watch this classic again haha love your reactions!
16:43 lmao these little moments of serendipity in Alanda videos

I was so looking forward to seeing your reaction to the infamous jumpscare of this movie and you did NOT disappoint!
