I like MW2's campaign a little more. Sure COD4 campaign created the cinematic formula, but MW2 perfected it. It also has some of the best music I ever heard for an FPS game.

2007-2008 were such great years for video games. That was when the XBOX 360 and the PlayStation 3 were finally hitting their stride. Modern Warfare, Bioshock, Halo 3, and GTA 4 came out within months of each other.....Man I miss high school.

Modern Warfare, World at War, Modern Warfare 2, And Black Ops 1. Those were the best call of duties ever. They were simple, and you could just play without asking what every little thing does. Not to mention the campaigns were fantastic.

Definitely my favorite. I remember playing in online multiplayer for the first time and I felt like I was in an actual battlefield. I was so scared to die! I don't think the majority of gamers really care about their K/D anymore, considering the majority are 12 year olds. It used to be simple and you had to work with the guns and perks that were available at the time. It made it challenging. You had to figure out how to use those weapons and perks more effectively than your opponent. Now a days you can add so much crap to your guns that it really takes that aspect of survival of the fittest away.
Lets not forget the music and soundtrack...worked so perfectly and hearing it again gives me chills :)

+2727BROOKLYN I wouldn't say so, I've play all the Call of duty's since 3 and my all time favorite has been Black Ops 1. Thought the story was so unique especially for a a first person shooter, multiplayer was so much fun and probably the last game of the series that wasn't overboard with all the shit and i could just play zombies for a full weekend without getting bored. MW1 was absolutely breathtaking for it's time but for gameplay value and fun BO1 takes the cake.

It's interesting, Soap was the main player character, the one the audience sees most of the story through, but Price was the true main character and protagonist of the MW series, from the mission in Pripyat all the way to the finale of MW3, it was really Price's story.

Something about the characters that Treyarch created was so gripping for me. World at War and Black Ops had a certain personality to them that no other Call of Duty game has replicated

For me this will never be topped. Multi-player was the kind of frustrating where you immediately loaded up again because you were still having fun. Everybody had the same kill streaks, and the weapons would go through a meta, where suddenly everyone would switch from the P90, to the M16, to the M40A3, to the Druganov, to the MP5… etc. But they were constantly changing because the situational use was constantly changing. Which meant every gun had a use. Nowadays I often use less than half the weapons afforded to me because they don’t have actual situational use. I loved this game. Best maps, too.
The multiplayer mode was geared towards PC, instead of consoles. So it had the element of strategy and the feeling of achievement (albeit less than for example BF and CS) instead of the arcade feel of today's COD's.
I see little strategy in slapping on juggernaut and tanking 50.Cal sniper rounds. Which is basically all anyone does.

You wanna know why we don't feel that connection towards the characters in FPS levels anymore? What was the last FPS you can truly remember that started you off as a nameless grunt where you're shooting bottles off fence posts and helmets and such in a training mission? That's because the game starts you off as nothing, being brand new, and works your way up almost in an RPG way.
I remember the characters from infinite warfare. Game was as good if not surpasing mw.

2007 was the year for FPS. Coming off Half Life 2's innovations in FPS storytelling (and the release of Episode 2 w/ the Orange Box), we got Portal, CoD4, and Bioshock in the same year.
The nuke scene I think is honestly not only one of the most iconic scenes in video games but in all of entertainment. I will never forget my first time playing the campaign and witnessing such a well done sequence that had me silent and stunned even minutes after it. Most movies can't even make me feel that way let alone a video game. Hats off to you COD4, you will forever be a legend.

I just replayed the CoD 4 campaign for the past week...it's like the 20th time I do it in the past 8 years...and man wasn't it astonishing...the nostalgia and heart beats...the goosebumps flowing. This game made my childhood
-Simplistic and easy to get into. Not a ton of perks and weapons or kill streaks, but just the right amount. Kill streaks aren't OP like much of the controlled kill streaks in future franchises
-Arguably the best or among the top 3 in story out of the entire franchise
-Arguably has the best map design out of the entire series, hands down.

I loved COD and MW2 but the franchise has changed for the worse over the years. Not a case of rose tinted hind sight, it was actually a better gaming experience. I think Battlefield has gone in the right direction with their WW I scenario instead of the futuristic super jump bullshit.

It felt just like good ole original modern warfare on Xbox 360 .
Best part is they gave me all 16 maps . i was so happy and it is totally worth it .

+jider I totally agree. To me, MW2 is a solid classic. MW1 simply didn't feel as good as MW2 in multiplayer. MW2 was killed by the community, but the core game was amazing.

One thing that I found interest about the first mw game versus the others , it gave this very silent quiet depressing vibe, but mw2 and 3 gave this war and action packed vibe .
Simplicity makes a COD game worth playing.

I think music has so much to do with how good a game is. Like the last mission in COD 4 when Kamarov came to rescue you. That was so beautiful...
i think what was also really fun about the first two modern warfares is that everything was overpowered. Somebody could literally run around with just a pistol and have the most kills at the end of a match. Also, like you said, the simplicity of it. 3 perks ONLY and each set of perks were very useful so you would really have to choose wisely. You either get two attachments with bling or reload faster with sleight of hand vs the newer games where u can get 2 attachments and 6 perks. In this case, limitation is good.

I think the reason cod4 was so great was because it was able to relate to us. In other words, the game made you actually feel like you were in some of the modern day conflicts that were happening. It was also somewhat realistic, not only in graphics but in gameplay. It was just an intensely gritty game. I always found the most sic for cod4 interesting. It was like somewhat depressing yet warfare like.
