    Hi bjorn, I am a Japanese, and big fan of you.
    Just Like you, I already did 1000km challenge with Ariya 63kWh in Japan.
    As a result, I could only demonstrate 46kW with ALL the fast chargers and the result was scattered.
    Nissan has since OFFICIALLY announced that if you fast charge from more than SOC 95%, the charging output will show the behavior of limiting to just 46kW.
    As a solution to this problem, Nissan has also proposed that the problem can be reset by turning off the power for more than 5 minutes.
    If the same behavior exists in the European version, it would explain why all fast chargers were limited to exactly 90 kW this time.
    Also, I found in the last charging session of 63kWh version Ariya 1000km challenge, the behavior of the charging output slowly decreasing from 93 kW after the short sleeping break would also make sense if the power had been turned off for more than 5 minutes.
    In the introductory part of your 1000 km challenge, did you use fast charging from about SOC 95% to full charge?
    If you could do 1000km challenge again,
    ・do you not fast charge from about SOC 95%?
    ・If you are fast charging more than 5 minutes after turning off the power, does it unlock the 90kW limiting behavior?
    It might be a good idea to check these two points. Thanks.

      SOC = state of charge where 95% is nearly full and you'd expect reduced charging speed when a battery is nearly full.
      Do you mean SOC 5% (nearly empty) or am I misunderstanding?
      Edit: or do you mean the ariya reduces speed above 95% SOC then "remembers" that it should reduce speed, so when charging from e.g. 10% it is still limiting the top speed?

      No, SOC95%(nearly full).
      This special limitation does not apply to most EV users, so most EV owners are not aware of it.
      I, on the other hand, have to charge my car to 100% at a nearby fast charger after normal charging at home before starting the 1000 km challenge, so I am subject to this particular condition.
      Therefore, it is possible that Bjorn is also subject to the same conditions that limits 90kW, rather than 115kW.

      @@EV_Native at soc 95% there's almost no rooms left to smuggle additional electrons that the battery is willing to accept gradually developing resistance in no time would lead to shorten the lifespan of the battery with the current battery chemistry this car used.

    We have the same problem in Canada with kaput chargers. PetroCanada used a federal grant to build a 350kW network across Canada along the Trans-Canadian Highway (HW20). Many chargers are failing for lack of maintenance. Really annoying, especially since those are the top chargers for our Ioniq 5s.

      It's a very major problem in Canada because Measures Canada are filled with incompetent idiots that thought forcing charging companies to bill by the minute instead of by the power used so if you pay for 350kw and get 50 you are paying 7 times the price and should just be pumping gas.

      Another reason why provincial and or federal TAX money should NOT be spent on early adopters (did not get any with Tesla ) car but for instead charging infrastructure ONLY.

      This is the problem with grants. Companies get the money for installing the chargers but not for maintaining them.

      Unmaintained chargers should go back to the federal government. Incentive for companies to maintain them, or the feds get the infrastructure they helped pay for.

      It's a gom and high speed run after all. A day of 40 kmh driving would let our eNV200 show 170km of range, just for it to die after 55 when you floor it

      @@MIA7Xthies your car obviously is lighter. I can reach 250 with a 31 kwh (netto) battery, so when i recharge and use your 64kwh i archive 512km. Or take the the mercedes eqs. It hase a massive battery, but because it’s so slippery it drives you 680-700km with its 108 kwh battery, real world and with higher speeds

      @@MIA7Xthies, have one too. But what you see on the GOM is based on recent driving. I got 595 km on the GOM on my Kona after a few weeks only going to and from work. Obviously, that didn't turn out to be true when I went on a longer (and faster) trip...
      OTH, I've seen Konas with about 330 km on the GOM at 100%.
      I have got 500 km of real range (driven 440 km and GOM still showed 60 km left) in favourable conditions, about 360 km of which were at 100 to 110 km/h. Back and forth, so no elevation or wind direction advantage.

    nice one. and with 285Wh/km I can fully understand that you get range anxiety at 4%. 😏time seems pretty slow considering it has such a rather enormous battery

    Not too bad! In my opinion it’s no big deal if it takes 11 or 10 hours to drive 1000km. For med it would take at least 12 hours with a fossile. I appreciate the breaks when I drive longer journeys. More important is the comfort during these long drives!

      Trust me that is really problematic. Most of the time the car does not wait for you but you have to wait for the car when you dont need it. I owned one of these PSA Cars range was good etc. But if you had an appointment the car was annoying as shit.

    Despite the higher consumption and slower charging, I found myself liking the Ariya - especially in that colour - more than I wanted or expected. Perhaps it needs to be considered up there with Niro and Enyaq, just below the EV6/Ioniq5 leaders (at around £40-45k mark)?

    Wow... That consumption is horrible at this speed! Based on your Model Y tests, the MY RWD might get almost the same highway range with just 60 kWh battery instead of 87 kWh...

      @@phileasler5401 that's not my point. Other manufacturers can also put more emphasis on efficiency. Use less battery per car means more capacity for total production, less impact per car, lower cost price per car. Only benefits to be had.

      @@bilgyno1 If they did all cars would look exactly like or pretty close to a Tesla. There isn't much room for car designers to work their magic when the required drag coefficient is around 0.23. Problem is that a big chunk of the customer base craves looks more than efficiency, especially if they don't do long commutes that often.

      Interestingly, Model Y is sooo much more efficient than other cars. But there's a thing called "Spritmonitor" in Germany, comparing actual consumption of actual owners of almost every car out there, fossil and electric, and the Model Y has exactly the same consumption as the Ioniq 5. Hmmmm... I checked, because a mate has a Model Y and he uses more electricity than I do with my Ioniq 5, and he drives slower than I do. I don't know what exactly that tells us, but it might mean that other manufacturers than Tesla, such as VW or Hyundai are not actually as stupid as one might think.

      Over here the cheapest Ariya AWD starts at 61K, probably 65K on the road with a color option and speaker upgrade. Why spend that on an Ariya?

    Basically it was only faster because the initial capacity you have started with was larger therefore could go further/needed less charge.

    Hi, great review once again. Wonder if you could help me with the math. Dash says 10hr 6min driving and avg 118 kph. I assume the 10h 6m incl much idle time as no way just 44 min charging. 1000 km @ 118 kph works to just under 8.5hr driving.
    So, 2hr 20min total charging? Makes sense. Say avg 95 kw charge rate, that's 210 kWh added. If you used 75 kWh of initial battery fill, that's 285 kWh total expended. 28.5 kWh per 100 km ... Bing!

    The charging speed seems to go to 90kW when the car locks or unlocks
    That could explain why it happens when you're not in front of it

    Wet roads, relatively high weight and drag coefficient. That combined with unknown charging problems. It would be interesting to see this test once again with 19” tires and dry roads. And of course better luck with charging. Considering the flat curve that we have seen in other tests it should be possible to do the challenge in perhaps 10h35 min?

    @bjornnyland - The Ariya needs a Geilo test now that we have winter.. I was getting abysmal charging speed in the cold this weekend. 38kw.. only got up to 60kw by 51% (and half an hour of charging). Ariya was silent when charging, so the heatpump wasnt running. So either mine is broken, or it doesnt use the heatpump/AC to heat/cool the battery when charging.

    90kw is a pretty conservative charging rate for an 87kWh battery. That's about 1C. But at least it holds that charging rate for a very long time. Unlike the BZ4X, which peaks at like, 80kW then just gradually drops to nothing.

    I am pretty sure charging will improve once the chargers are updated to deal with the CSS quirks from Nissan's CSS implementation. CSS is a shitty standard so problems are expected with new implementations.

    No real point in getting the big battery. If its charging at the same speed the larger battery is just extra weight making it use more electricity.
    The only reason it was faster is most likely because you started with more range so it had about 30% less charging to do over the first full cycle.
    If you began with 63kWh in this one it would probably have taken longer than the smaller battery car thanks to more weight and similar charge speeds.

      @@Psi-Storm Yeah thats a pretty specific use case for all that extra money.
      Surely the two best things about larger batteries are more range per charge but also faster charge rate (per mile added - not C-rate) over a small one?
      Even if you do fall into that 50km window you also have to take into account poor weather, degradation and so on so most of those who would be in that window would fall out of it sooner or later anyway.
      Honestly unless the charge speed is fixed the small battery makes a lot more sense and that difference in cost pays for a lot of electricity.

    just an observation, but every time you showed the charge speed dropped to 90kw, it seems to me that the car was around 30% charge, or just under. somewhere between 28-30 at least. Maybe that's what trips it and not the time of day or the charging time, but some internal setting for it to go slower when it gets to around 30% ?

      @@mesaber86 gotcha. Yes, the Ariya has slower than expected charging. 115kW is less than what Nissan originally promised. Even if it was 130kW charging on a 90kWh pack, that's totally unremarkable unless it had an etron charging curve.

    Another reason to ABCAT (..And Toaster): Imagine a future when the restaurant entrance can recognise you, the charging driver, and automatically reduce charging speed so you stay a little longer.
    If you think that's a weird thought, consider that it is a common practice for fast food chains to play faster ambiance music at busy hours, because that makes people eat faster..

      No. They are built to fail or sabotaged by those in the oil industry. Ever noticed that despite there being a 1000 times more petrol pumps, they rarely break down, despite bring mechanically far more complex.
      I've never known our home charger break down!

    Hallo , 11 Std. für 1000 km sind eigentlich okay , aber der Verbrauch von rund 29 kW auf 100km sind in 2022 ein absolutes No Go.

      Still it has a better range in Bjorns tests than many of the main competitors (i.e. Ioniq5, Kia EV6, Volvo C40 and VW ID4) and on par with Skoda Enyaq. For me that is enough to order the car because I like the looks, the comfort and the price better than these competitors.

      @@fredrikh8070 Hallo , der Komfort und die Verarbeitung stehen außer Frage , weil einfach sehr gut.
      Aber Verbräuche, egal welcher Hersteller mit fast 30 kW bei 120 km/h sind einfach zu viel. Das sind rund 18€ auf 100 km auf der Autobahn. Auch wenn es nur einmal im Jahr ist um in den Urlaub zu fahren.

      @@Waldlaeufer789 That is true. But the avg. consumption in Bjorns test was not 30 kW/100km. The avg. consumption at 120 km/h was about 25 kW/100 km. Nevertheless an avg. consumption of 17-18 kW at 120 km/h would be nicer. Now the Ariya achieved this at 90 km/h.

    I can see they kept the same design language as in the LEAF. some features are weirdle placed under top menus which make little sense, but more importantlly they throw some features on the "odometer" screen, and the rest on the main screen... weird... the odometer screen needs to be operated with the buttons on the steering wheel inconvinient...ughh... how come they did not centralize things in the main screen like the rest .... too bad....Nissan might win on reliability, comfort, on these, but lacking on effciency, usablity, and infotainment....

      If you want usability, buy a Tesla. Have a Mach E now, horrible UX. Get rentals through work, Enyaq, ID4 and Audi has shitty interface. Haven’t tried BMW, but they’re not exactly known for great menus. Teslas have other issues, but at least my 65 yr old father could understand it.

      Incorrect. To drive 100 km, you need 17-25 kWh. 200 Wh will get you about 1 km only.

    What a rubbish attempt from Nissan. Consumption higher than a BMW iX3 that is a fossil convert (and rode in winter). Charging slower than any new EV. Heavy. Tech that looks like it's 20 yrs old.
    At this price point, EV6, Ioniq 5, Mach E, ID4 & of course Tesla Y are all significantly better.

      Alas Nissan like Honda and T'Yoda are still in bed with big oil. Ariya is nice, I have driven one. But its a compliance car. If Nissan were serious they would not have implemented an 80s UX and would have produced an electric Micra for the budget EV market.
