How I Organize & Store My LEGO Sets in 2022

  • I show how I used to store my LEGO sets and then give an example of my new system. I also get a new shelf set up in the Storage Room of Doom and put my three ring binders of LEGO manuals on it. A fairly successful day in the Brickitect Storage Wars.

I came up with a similar idea a few weeks ago (before watching your video). I had also kept the boxes and needed to find a way to save space, but I needed a system that would be kid-friendly. Also, storing the booklets in the boxes always resulted in them getting trashed. So I started with the same type of page protector sleeves that you used in the video. But I found that my kids never flipped through the binders to find what they wanted. So I wanted a system that would make them more accessible to them. So I realized that I could use bigger storage bags, keep the instruction booklets in the sleeves, and put them in the bag along with the pieces. The sleeves give the booklets enough protection and rigidity. And now that the sets are in bags, and all the boxes have been collapsed, I saved at least 50% of the space that the boxes used to take up. I’m sure it’s not quite as efficient as the two step system in your video, but I think my system is a little more kid-friendly. However, I’m not quite finished. I still need to get some bins to put them in and add some dividers for grouping. Not sure how I want to do that yet.

Boxes: you could keep the smaller ones in the notebook sheet protectors, or better yet, Cut yes I said Cut out the picture, kit # and name. Then just save that part in your sleeve. Thanks for the ideas!! I'm going thru all my twins' old lego kits. Since I was never allowed to put together a lego kit, only quietly observe from a distance, this will be a challenge!!

Very cool! I would definitely try the "smaller boxes inside larger boxes" space-saving trick others have suggested to get those empty boxes under control!

I have a ton of sets to sort so this is kinda motivating me to do it…maybe. My sorted sets go in 5 Gallon storage boxes stacked on shelves. Manuals inside. Then I label the box with the set numbers inside. Everyone has their way and that is the way…for them!

Think of a set you want to build. Get set from drawer in bag. Get instructions. GET BOX TO PLACE ON TABLE WHILE YOU BUILD CUZ BOXES ARE COOL!

I love how you organized your stuff. Not only is it efficient, but it is perfectly set up for eBay. I have ordered so much Lego in the past via eBay and that's how they came.
I honestly wish I owned a house and not a condo. I would have so much room for so many personal things.

ok, if you do decide to get rid of the boxes, you could choose some favorites and cut the front panel off of them to slip into the front and back covers of the binders. you could still enjoy the graphics that way.

I turned my MOC into modular 16x16 baseplates that I can take apart and place into small stackable boxes.
I reduced the Lego I didn't need and am giving it away.
I did Tetris with the loose parts into ziplocks and stored them tight in a crate.
Still I am feeling like it takes up too much space. But it's nice to have everything in one storage item that I can lift down a staircase if needed.
I'm sure there's Lego elsewhere in the house I'm forgetting. But what doesn't go into the crate is lost when the house burns down. Choices need to be made.

I think as a collection evolves you have to decide of you need to keep all of it. You have to edit it. Really Marie Kwondo the collection. I am at that point. Granted I don't have much space just three shelves and some plastic drawers. But I have reached the limit and editing needs done. Collecting takes so much more time and energy than you expect. Good job putting in the work to make sure it brings you more complete joy and not some joy with lots of chaos and guilt.

Your storage actually isn't that bad. Quick question though. What would you have done if you went to the UK during the queen's passing? I am wondering a lot about what you would have done.

Building lego sets is the tip of the iceberg in this hobby. You guys should make a trip to a lego convention sometime. Plenty of insane, huge and limitlessly creative mocs on display.

I feel the getting a clean cut is the best part. If you just flipped over the paper and wrote on it, you could make it easier to read.

Haha thanks for the share! Just what I was looking for today. I too have a lot of LEGO sets to store away, not as many as you, I think, but I've only got a loft space (that's full of junk that too needs sorting). Too much sorting and not enough building at present but it'll be worth it in the end!

Brilliant. I’m thinking about doing the same thing with my instructions booklets. I flatten all my boxes but they still take up space. Thank you for the fun and useful video.

  • @smack109
    @smack109 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Never throw away your boxes especially ones for vintage lego sets. They hold a large amount of value for some sets. Instead of flattening mine I simply put small boxes inside larger boxes. This reduces the space boxes take up by about 2/3rds.

I hear from her every day about Lego sets on bedroom dressers and side tables, boxs inside bigger boxs in garage. I just remind her that when 1 of kids move out I get the bedroom and will be good. Great work Sir

Atleast you can walk in your room of doom. My shame room is so full of teaching stuff /toys that you can't even walk without risking breaking your neck. My library doesn't have enough storage space for me so all my teaching stuff is in that room . Close to 2000 preschool books, flannel board stories , toys , puppets, puzzles, craft supplies and teaching guilds.
