I don't get it. Why would anyone object to administering anesthesia? Like..."Oh no! My patient won't twitch around and complain and make it so much harder for me to stitch properly!" Why?!
This happened to my mom when she was having a c section. She told the doctors she could feel them cutting, and the doctor didn't believe her. That is, until she grabbed the pole that the iv was on and tried to beat them with it. Needless to say, she got more after that.
They DO apply local anesthesia every time (and that is what Dr Jones confirmed in the video). It is not very strong and sometimes women can still feel some pain and think that there is no anesthesia. In this case doctors tries to distract woman with her baby. For me it was the worst part of giving birth, labor was not so bad :) And of course I had anesthesia, like all other women. Without anesthesia it is unbearable torture, no one torture women in hospitals these days.
I think the dad called the baby "this tiny mush of what was almost like a little person" because it best represents his perspective at the time, which was that he didn't immediately register that it was an actual baby. It was actually a great way to express his shock and wonder.
I think it really showed how unexpected this all was. He went to the toilet thinking this was some sort of bowel movement related thing, I get why he didn't immediately recognize a newborn in there and probably thought something along the lines of 'my God it almost looks like a tiny person' before it clicked
I have a 2 month old. I knew I was having a baby, yet when she was put on my stomach my first thought was “mini queen alien from Aliens?” before I realized it was my daughter, and I quickly scooped her up.
I have a friend who went through a Cryptic pregnancy, the Doctor felt a lump and thought it was a swollen spleen (negative pregnancy tests), months of testing, aneamia etc. she went in to get a scan to check on the 'tumor' for the first time and it was very baby shaped. She had him a week later and hes a healthy 15 year old now. The Doctor who missed it saw her in the midwifery ward and said 'Well don't I feel silly'.. Same Doctor missed my mums lung cancer. Safe to say we switched Doctors pretty quickly. EDIT: Forgot to clarify the Doctors words when feeling for the lump were: 'Well, it's definitely not your womb.' She thought she had leukemia.
Wow I’m going through that now I’ve had 3 ultrasounds and they see no baby my periods have been weird since may and I’ve been feeling strong movement. And my iron is so low I have to get iron infusions and that only happens when I’m pregnant I have 2 kids already

Look, I know doctors have a really really tough job, and that's still an understatement. But sometimes it just feels like... there should be repercussions for something like this: missing the pregnancy is one thing since it's rare, but your mom's lung cancer on top of it? Nah, that can't just slide! But it will, I know. My family has experienced plenty of "oopsies" and straight up malpractise, but we've never been compensated and they've never been punished.
I got told I was given a local anesthetic when I was getting stitched up after my first... and I don't believe them AT ALL. I was in an INSANE amount of pain, I felt every single stitch, writing in pain and they just got annoyed with me and told me to "sit still". Doctors who refuse to give anesthetic are horrible people in my book :')
Could be local anesthetic doesn't work for you? I got stitches for a bad cut on my chin once. Gave me a few shots, then asked if if I could feel them scratching on my chin. Yep. more shots. I think I took 6 shots in total, they were getting frustrated with it, when I decided to just let them stitch it up and I'd just stay as still as possible. I could still feel every one of the 5 stitches they put into my chin.
I really hope they gave them to you. That is beyond despicable if they didn't (but sadly wouldn't surprise me). My sister did get the shot for stitches PP but still could feel everything. Her doc did the right thing and offered general anesthesia. She refused it but at least they did the right thing and gave her a choice for better pain relief.

Yeah. I told the doc after my first childbirth that local anesthesia took about ten minutes longer to take effect than expected but he ignored me. Told me to stop twitching and just nurse my baby. I was nice and numb after he finished. The midwives who attended my other births listened and seemed to me to be more careful with the stitching.
I could still feel stitches through my epidural. It helped but not enough that it didn't hurt. Anesthesia also wears off me very quickly though so maybe I hadn't had a fresh dose 🤷🏼♀️
I just want to say these videos helped me realize I was in labor at 24 weeks. A lot of people question how these women don’t know they’re in labor,but when you’re not actively looking for labor signs it’s easy to write off contractions as something else. I walked into the hospital fully dilated and still not positive I was about to give birth. My tiny micro premie turned 6 months yesterday ❤
Yeah that’s so true! I recently got a really bad stomach ache, I thought I’m either dying or giving birth again. But I wasn’t pregnant for sure 😅 but I know the pain of giving birth and it was almost the same P.s: I’m happy for you and you baby ❤
I work at a vets office as a receptionist and I use your saying of "you do the best with the information you have" a lot at my work while comforting clients
I definitely get a little paranoid about my cat and making sure he's healthy. I'm glad you do your best to reassure the people who come into your office. If only our little friends could tell us how they're feeling.

When my mother gave birth to both my brother and I, she flatlined and they brought her back. Twice. She died twice and my dad had to watch. He described it as the most terrifying thing he’d ever gone through. So when that dad said the same thing, it hit me pretty hard.
I only found out I was pregnant because of TikTok. I have really infrequent periods (still think it could be PCOS but no diagnosis). Had one in late May. Got pregnant in June (didn’t know). Took a test in mid July which was negative. Saw a TikTok in September saying we should take one every month or something. I jokingly took this test so confident I couldn’t be pregnant. I took 3 more because I was in denial when it was positive. Ultrasound showed I was already 13 weeks. I had no symptoms or anything. Now super happy and feel ready for this baby. For many medical reasons we didn’t think I’d ever get pregnant but I did and it was amazing!
I have PCOS and I wanted a second child. The diagnosis had only come after having my first child, although I already knew. Anyway, I found out on Halloween that I was pregnant and 2 days later I felt the baby kick for the first time. I was half way through and had no idea. I had not taken any tests before because I was discouraged for 3 years trying and figured, what a waste of money this time. The doctor did not hesitate to give me a blood test and for once it was pregnant. She ended up being born 3 months later premature, but that's another story.
I had incredibly irregular periods before I had my first baby. My doctor told me to loose weight and recommended different natural remedies. Not ONCE did she tell me to test regularly. I ended up having a missed abortion, meaning I actually didn't recognize I was losing a child because I didn't even know I was pregnant at that time. It is great that so many people have so much access to so many food information nowadays. I wish you a great birth and a wonderful baby time :-)
I was like "get the baby! pick up the baby!!!" but then when he was shocked that it started crying I was like "oooohhhhh, they both thought the baby was dead or maybe not fully developed and they might have honestly been scared to touch it." Thankfully that baby started crying to alert them that they needed to get it out of the toilet! I couldn't imagine the shock for both of them!
I can imagine the poor baby girl being very much angry at life in that moment, she must have shout her lungs out 😂 Getting born and hearing your parents basically ghosting you 😂 (my daughter started protesting quite convincingly when taken off me for measures, "vitals" etc. It was clear she wasn't in pain, just very unhappy 😅 Took her a few seconds to calm down when I hold her again 😂 When she is older she'll know the story behind why she seems so angry at birth 😅)
My doc didn't use a local for sewing me up in 1990 and wouldn't get someone else, he just started in. 10 years later he almost lost a mom and baby, and lost his license. After childhood abuse and being young I didn't feel like I could advocate for myself beyond speaking up initially.

How a doctor can say to a woman who is clearly going to be vulnerable to a huge amount of birth trauma because of how this unfolded that they couldn't give her anaesthetic for stitches is beyond me. I mean it's never right, but I feel like it takes a special kind of horrible to look at someone who has just been through that and say that. And to the Dad who just thought his wife gave birth to a stillborn baby on the toilet, only to find out the baby was alive, then watch his wife nearly die, still worrying about prem and sick the baby might be, to find out the baby was term and healthy, to then hear his wife "has to" have stitches with no anaesthetic is also just cruel (mostly for the woman, but this poor guy is also going through it!). I know I keep saying this, but I just can't imagine them saying to a guy, we're going to stitch up your penis with no anaesthetic because there's no time to wait.
Literally the thing I take with me in everyday life and share with others because of you. You did what you could with the information that you had at the time.
I was 17 and had a tear. I had no epidural , nothing, he came very very fast and they did not numb me at all for my stitching. I asked if they were going to numb anything and he said no it would be over too quick to really bother with any local. It was only 3 or 4 stitches but I felt every one of them. So I Def believe that it happens, It did to me.
I've had three babies, one with an epidural and two without pain medication. All three resulted in needing stitches after birth. The pain during stitches on all three was terrible even the one that I had an epidural for.
I recently had a surprise delivery at home alone. First pregnancy, and she was three weeks early. MDJ, you and specifically this series prepared me. I was fortunate to have a pretty easy going pregnancy with the only thing my doctor worried about was her being small. I had been in labor about 48 hours but my contractions weren't very strong, and began to get farther apart before ramping up again. So I thought they were false contractions. But when they became more uncomfortable I called a friend to take me to the hospital, and not 30min later I was holding my baby girl. I didn't tear, and when I delivered I was fully aware, clear headed, and still able to move around with minimal discomfort. The medics, nurses, and everyone who took care of me after were very surprised by how calm I was during such an unusual delivery.
When getting stitches after giving birth at some point I flinched (although it didn't hurt much since I had had an epidural) and the doctor was immediately "Oh did that hurt?? Let me get you some lidocaine!" It didn't feel any different with the lidocaine tbh but there was 0 hesitation to get a local anesthetic.
Taking another pregnancy test is really the best advice. A few months ago I went to my doctor for some tests for an unrelated condition and he sent me for a blood test to check my Hcg levels to confirm I’m not pregnant before further testing. It was negative and my period was due the next day. But I personally felt like something was off, so I waited 4 days, still didn’t have a period, and took an at home pregnancy test to find it was positive. Just because the first test is negative doesn’t mean you aren’t pregnant.
My real scenario post birth… Me during stitches: Ow, that hurts! Doctor: Weird. Can you feel this? (Keeps stitching) Me: Ow, yes! Doctor: Huh. (Keeps stitching)
Nothing similar to birth but I had a pilonidal cyst lanced, but before gave me some morphine and local anesthetic. They came back tried to lance it. I was in pain and told them to stop. They immediately did and gave me more morphine. ALL THIS TO SAY it’s some bs for moms to not get anesthetic for something like birth.
I had the same thing happen with my first, when the doctor was stitching up my third degree tear. My epidural had been turned off and I could feel everything.

The doctor sucks however on the flip we also have to be far more aware that for millions of people including especially women they were raised to ‘play nice’ and ‘give service’ etc etc and not advocate for themselves. I was a sort-of Halloween baby. I was born in September. But, I was adopted. And, the day the adoption was finalized and my parents brought me home was Halloween. My dad always joked that he was never sure if they got a trick or a treat that day. 😆 My SIL's birthday is the day before Halloween. My husband always talks about how lucky she was as a kid. "She got cake and ice cream one day, and candy the next!"
I went in to septic shock during my labor and needed an emergency c section. My epidural didn’t take so they had to put me under. The idea that someone “didn’t have time” for anesthesia is crazy to me. I was dying and they still had time for anesthesia.
I don't know what's worse, losing just the wife and having a child you didn't expect, or losing both when you were expecting it, as my friend did with my best friend. She was pregnant, they were excited. He woke up one morning and she was just gone - around 4/5 months along. 😭
I wonder if antibiotics sometimes reduce the efficacy of birth control not because of medication interaction, but because of routine change. like if someone has to take a new med expressly with food or expressly without food, maybe that changes the time of day they take both medications. Or they take the antibiotic and mentally go "I took my meds today" and forget to take their birth control
Also, for me, I've never taken an antibiotic without either throwing up or intestinal issues so many the birth control doesn't get processed correctly.
No pain meds after?! At the maternity they gave me a prescription for so much paracetamol I could have sold it, and I had just a superficial tear... why would they not prescribe pain meds 😢
11:19 after my mom gave birth to my sister (in a hospital in Saudi Arabia 31 yrs ago), she had a laceration. My mom doesn’t remember if there was an OB when she was delivering, but she remembers quite vividly that after she had her in her arms, there was only a nurse down there. She immediately started stitching and my mom described that like hot iron stabbing her. She screamed and reflexively kicked the nurse with her leg. The nurse snapped, shouted, and hit her leg and told her to stop fidgeting and immediately continued despite my mom’s kicking. I am still horrified and incredulous every time I remember this since mom told me the story, because i cannot fathom why in God’s name didn’t she demand she stop and call her doctor. And why didn’t she make a complaint to the hospital? Mind you we are not citizens of saudi arabia, we’re Egyptians. This wasn’t covered by medical insurance and every foreigner pays for their deliveries.
In the back of my mind with a lot of these got pregnant around antibiotics stories that maybe people that feel sick are generally less good at perfect pill taking. I know when I feel bad I'm forgetful.
One possibility for sure. I'm more likely to lose my sense of time etc. if I've got fever rather than become forgetful, but basically same consequence. I'd also think the disease itself could sometimes have an effect. After all you're not getting antibiotics for nothing. Something in your body is already off, and maybe it means the chemicals won't be absorbed like they should.
I'm wondering if antibiotics don't increase fertility rather than just decrease the effectiveness of birth control. I was infertile for 4.5 years, did 6 rounds of IUI fertility treatments with medication which didn't work. I was proscribed antibiotics for an injury while I was taking a break from fertility treatments before we planned to try IVF and I got pregnant.
New MDJ phrase: "There's always time for local anesthetic, unless it's an emergency, in which case you need general anesthesia." The amount of pain we're expected to endure just for having uteruses is unacceptable. We usually can't even get local anesthetic for IUD placements/removals, so I'm totally not surprised doctors refuse to use it for LITERALLY PUTTING IN STITCHES just because it's an OB/GYN procedure. Imagine not giving anesthetic for sewing up any other kind of injury. But it's just normalized if it's about periods or babies or birth control.
On the flip of this anesthetic drugs are NOT candy they are drugs and actually very potent and very serious drugs. They are very safe but especially getting put under has risks and should only be done if absolutely needed. It can cause damage to teeth from falling if not properly awake and from incorrect tube placement it can cause nerve damage, and organ damage including cardiac arrest. It also is well known to cause deaths some of which is accidental due to incorrect dosages one study said the deaths are as high as 316 people every year in the US. Now it still is extremely safe with the numbers of 0.4 to 0.69/100 000. If you need serious surgery that’s most typically far more important than the tiny rate of death/body damage from going under but it also does come with risk like all drugs.
I’ve survived a few IUD placements. My first one was the worst. I’d followed the instructions to take a megadose of ibuprofen (SO bad for my stomach lining!), but clearly it wasn’t enough to keep me from almost fainting from the pain. I began to see stars and my hearing went staticky. The nurse saw me start to go, grabbed my hand, and said “Stay with me!” I don’t know what pain relief would be optimal for a situation like that (outpatient, deep internal organ, in a clinic not a hospital), but in this day and age, there’s gotta be something else besides white-knuckling through it.
@@catc8927 Sorry for the rant. The tl;dr is that we have something better than NSAIDs for IUD procedures; it's local anesthetic. And it's bullshit that the "standard of care" is so needlessly painful and traumatic. One of my friends was discussing this last week. Apparently, OTC pain meds do pretty much nothing. Either most providers don't know this - because OB/GYN care is *especially* outdated compared to other specialties** - or they do know, but just don't care, and tell patients to take NSAIDs basically as a placebo. I've seen people on Twitter quote presenters at OB/GYN conferences who straight-up admit to lying to their patients about how much things will hurt. Basically, OB/GYN patients and female patients in general are often treated like shit. And yes, you can ABSOLUTELY get local anesthetic for IUD placements. However, most offices/practitioners will not even consider it as an option. If you ask, they'll say they "can't do it", but I suspect they just don't like having to add the extra time it take for it to kick in, even if it does cost very little. God forbid they wait for patients, not the other way around /s. **Actually, the state of OB/GYN care in the 1970s English-speaking world was so terrible that Archie Cochrane, a Scottish physician who advocated for evidence-based practices based especially on randomized controlled trials (which, I must add, is dubiously ethical in the realm of prenatal, perinatal, and postnatal care) awarded the specialty the "wooden spoon" following the tradition of awarding this joke prize to the worst performing student in the class; in this case, as the BMJ says, "for being the least evidence based medical specialty". One can argue that evidence-based obstetric care - not midwifery, which is a separate tradition entirely - only dates back to a few years before then. (James Forrester King's article "A short history of evidence-based obstetric care" is available for free through Google Scholar if you're interested.)
THIS!!! I can also say that I've had an IUD inserted in the US and in Germany, and I can't remember all the differences, but while both procedures hurt, I was in a lot of pain for about 8 hours (plus some more mild pain fora few hours beyond that) after my first insertion in the US, but only about 1 hour after my second one in Germany. I had a good experience with both doctors, so I really think it's more of a cultural thing.
My aunt knows a woman that had 9 kids. The last was mistaken for constipation and delivered while using an outhouse. Husband had to dismantle the seat of the outhouse and retrieve the baby. Everyone was fine after being cleaned up though. Thankfully baby didn't land face down!
I used to think cryptic pregnancies were 'exagerated', for lack of a better word, untill it happenned to a friend. At 10 AM she was leading a dog sledding tour in the wild, and at 4 PM she delivered her son. The body human is amazing and terrifying
Look, I've run into Docs that honestly don't think the cervix feels pain, that thinks that a local is unnecessary for postpartum suturing, that thinks that the cramps aren't that bad when childbirth was easier. The only answer I have for this is that they still call the person that graduates from medical school with the lowest grade "Doctor".
It made me kind of sad actually that the dad was like “Oh! The baby is actually alive!” when she started crying. I can’t even imagine what it would be like to have your partner go through a traumatic birth after you didn’t know they were pregnant, just to think you’d lost the baby. Also, based on a lot of experience I’ve had with doctors, and the experiences of others in the comment section, I feel like there are lots of Sadistic doctors out there (ie the “no time for local anesthetic” BS from this episode). It reminds me of “Dentist!” from Little Shop of Horrors.

I feel you about being nervous to see any doctor but in my experience - doctors involved in this work are the absolute best. I've never had one that made me feel more nervous.
It all depends on the doctor. I have went through 8 different gynecologists untill I found one that was right for me. He was treating me in all 3 of my pregnancies (all high risk) and a bit after the last one. He retired a year ago and I'm searching again. Hope I'll find one soon
I now have an urogynecolgist, she is a Wonderful doctor, and she is very gentle if I need an intervention in Her specialty. I've had some rotten gyne , who acted like they hated women. If you're not happy in your chosen specialty, don't take it out on me. And I am neurodivergent- have sensory issues, gain my confidence first before you approach ME
By all means. Start out by being open about your concerns. Literally say: "Can you please guide me through what awaits me, as we go? Because I'm really anxious and don't want to join the choir of women with bad gynaecologist visit experiences" Literally say it. If they are dismissive and have anything other than a mindful reaction, you have the right to get up and walk out at any given time. And in best case, they ace this introduction test of yours and you'll know that you're probably in good hands. Hope everything goes well for you! And if not, remember that sometimes it takes some tries to find a good fit!
Another Halloweenie! I was born in the morning on the 31st many decades ago. Over the years I have met nearly a dozen other people who share my birthday, one of whom was born in the same hospital as I in the same year. I hope their little Jackie has as much fun as I have had with this date as I have had.
I just cannot get over his face when he saw the baby in the toilet. My first thought would be to get the baby out of there because the water is cold and not wanting her to get hypothermia. But when you are younger and the unexpected happens, panic tends to overwhelm any logical things to do. At least they had a good outcome
I was a cryptid (yes cryptid) pregnancy. My mom was 20 wks when she told her doctor that he can day she's not pregnant all he wants but she wasn't leaving until he did a blood draw (urine kept coming up negative). Lo and behold, 32 years later here we are.
I'm grateful that home pregnancy tests have become so simple and reliable!! In the mid-80's when I first started using them, they were literally a science project! Little test tube to put in a stand with a mirror underneath, wait what felt like eons (30 min? Overnight?)to see if a floating ring was visible in the bottom of the delicately undisturbed angled mirror! AUGH! Crazy hard, right?! Times have changed.
I’m surprised they asked some cultures it is the parents job to cut the cord so although they were in shock and like uh no just do it, I’m glad they still respectfully offered.
As far as the local anesthetic arguments near the end, THANK YOU!!!!!! I have been told for many MANY “quick” procedures that “there’s no need for the local because [procedure] will be fast” OR “the shot for the local anesthetic will hurt worse than [procedure] will” 😡

I did this bc I have a spinal cord injury and nerve damage from untreated bone spurs tearing into my spinal cord. I constantly feel like I'm being electrocuted. I was laying in bed crying in pain and just screamed "SOMEBODY SEDATE ME BEFORE I LOSE MY MIND" think of your brain constantly tingling a d itching and BURNING bc the pain in your spine is so terrible. Its goes from head to toe and you cant even think and every movement stings and burns. You bet they finally prescribed me a good medication and scheduled me for an epidural. I described my pain and the stuff I said above^ and boom. Treated. Someone finally looked at me and saw my suffering and realized how fucking scared I was. It's so traumatic to be in such pain, I never want to birth a kid bc if it means I experience similar or worse pain.
I had an episiotomy and was stitched up after, all without anesthetic. I screamed when the doctor cut me (no warning/consent whatsoever, and no apology after). I have found so many women with similar stories, it just makes me sick. Absolutely horrendous and unacceptable.
As a new first time mama as of October 27th, I now completely relate to all of these women who say that they just thought they had to poop. I did not realize how similar the feeling of pushing a baby out was to pooping until I was in labor with my baby girl.
They do. I used to get the kits all the time. You can select age range, I think it's 14 yrs and older. I've made incredibly cool things that are very practical. I really should sign up again. I absolutely love everything I've made. A lock box where the door looks like a camera shutter. Flashlight that turns into a lantern. Electric pencil sharpener. A clamp on desk lamp with adjustable arms. A calendar that changes the date and day of the week when you turn the handle. They are all hard to describe but if you go to there site you'll see what you can make. You can also choose category of what you're interested in. They even have cooking and craft kits.
I love this show. I didn't know I was pregnant with my first child until the day before I delivered. I was told I was only about 3 months along and had actually lost 15 lbs. I had my period the entire time
I gave birth about a month ago, so labor pains are fresh in my mind. If your constipation is THAT painful, it's not constipation. Either that or I feel very sorry for you and you should probably seek medical attention.
My mom was an RN, and every time she'd see a supposed newborn on TV, she'd always announce how old she thought the baby was. 3 months was typical!😅 Thanks for the great memories MDJ!
I took two pregnancy tests well within the time frame, which would be positive one at the beginning of the week, and one at the end, both were negative. I guess I got a bad box. My baby is 2 months now and doing great!
9:12 to be fair, my son looked about like that when he was born. 😂 He was 9 lbs 15 oz and I've had friends whose babies weren't that big until 2-4 months old.
I don’t know if you’ll see this comment bc it’s been a few days, but MDJ I’m so grateful for your monthly rants about doing the best you can with the information you have. My husband recently passed away at 31 from undiagnosed hypertension, when I was 13 weeks pregnant. I keep thinking of all the what-ifs and the signs he may have been sick and the fact we had a blood pressure monitor at home and kicking myself for not doing something sooner, but then I hear your voice in my head and I know there was no reason for me to think he could be in danger of dying at 31 years old and I can’t do anything about it now so I need to try not to feel guilty. Most of the time that works. I appreciate you MDJ!
I think the doctor after my first child either didn't use a local or it didn't work- because I felt EVERYTHING when she sewed me. With the next three kids and other doctors, I only felt the local sting a bit.
My husband is the same way with cutting the umbilical cord. They ask if he wants to each time and each time he's like nope sorry but that's your job as the medical team. Don't hand me any surgical scissors and ask me to cut a body part (we know there's no nerve feelings in it but still). I respect it. Wouldn't want to either 😅
I was sewen up from tearing--9 stitches without a local--Dr said it would hurt more to have the local than the stitching. It felt like knives going through my flesh.....
I have a close family friend who didn't know she was pregnant until her water broke. I went to her baby shower, and the baby is so beautiful. But none of us could believe it. She couldn't believe it either. I know that she also did all the right things.
I was stitched twice without anesthetic. Once after my 10.9lb child and once after my 10.5lb child. The Dr in both instances said, it's ok I'm almost done.
I just stumbled upon your channel a few days ago. I’ve been a labor and delivery nurse for almost ten years now. I have often found myself wandering how can anyone not know they’re pregnant. I definitely knew when I was pregnant both times, especially with all the fetal movement and hyperemesis. I appreciate your views on this topic and it’s helped me to understand that this can truly happen and I should not be so quick to judge.
About anesthetics! Not that I had a bad dentist (retired), procedure wise, not at all, but I am a chronic severe (nerve) pain patient and, innocently enough, when I was about to have a root canal, I gave my dentist a list of my medications (buprenorphine patches + gabapentin; high dosage, both) and he absolutely plain out refused to put some numbing in my mouth! I, yes, underwent my first ever root canal, with 0 pain relief. And I had to come back 3 times because he couldn't take the root out in one go, as there was (I think) an "infection" or "inflammation", something along those lines. The worst. I later told my GP and he was shocked!
My epidural was still in effect when I got stitched up no need for more pain relief I also was happy to have a supervised student doctor do the stitches they did really well
Obviously its a very traumatic event and i would not wish a surprise delivery on anyone but im currently 7mo pregnant and I am kind of jealous of people who don't know they are pregnant until the end 😅
Hate to tell you this but both my children born at NZ biggest teaching hospital the stitching was without anaesthetic and the entire birth experience for number one terrifying and horrific. i told my kids about the births. both of them decided to never have children! In my concern to prevent unwanted pregnancy I did too good a job so I have no grandchildren😢 It didn’t matter what I said or wanted it was ignored. And i WAS very well prepared and informed. Your channel is important to empower and educate. You are doing an important job.
I tore with my second and I told the doctor I could feel her stitches. They didn’t hurt per say but I could feel it and she was like ok here let me numb you some more. I didn’t even really ask just felt like I should let her know I could feel her messing around. She jumped right in to make double sure I was comfortable she has delivered 3 of my babies and I hope she delivers number 4 in a month.
I have a friend who was born in the bathroom 3 months premature, her mum did know she was pregnant but there was a storm which caused high traffic so the ambulance didn’t get there until she was an hour old
Everyone always wants to blame the antibiotics. They foget that the illness it is treating, can mean you don't absorb your pill (D&V) or means you foget to take it, or take it late.
I know we aren't supposed to drink in pregnancy, which working in the alcohol industry caused me to disclose to my coworkers a little sooner than intended, but I admit that the day we told my parents they were going to be grandparents we drank some champagne. I had only half a glass. My mother decided to chide me, telling me it wasn't safe. My dad's response was, "Michelle, you were drinking a beer the night you went into labor with Kelly. I don't think half a glass of champagne is going to do any damage." My mom turned so red. Baby was born healthy, if very angry at being evicted.
I'm unsure about/don't remember getting a local anesthetic for my stitches, but then I just remembered I'd had an epidural, plus I was so out of it by then (awake for one and a half days straight, over 20 hours of labor) that I forgot over half of everything anyway! 😅😂❤

I don't get it. Why would anyone object to administering anesthesia? Like..."Oh no! My patient won't twitch around and complain and make it so much harder for me to stitch properly!" Why?!
This happened to my mom when she was having a c section. She told the doctors she could feel them cutting, and the doctor didn't believe her. That is, until she grabbed the pole that the iv was on and tried to beat them with it. Needless to say, she got more after that.
They DO apply local anesthesia every time (and that is what Dr Jones confirmed in the video). It is not very strong and sometimes women can still feel some pain and think that there is no anesthesia. In this case doctors tries to distract woman with her baby. For me it was the worst part of giving birth, labor was not so bad :) And of course I had anesthesia, like all other women. Without anesthesia it is unbearable torture, no one torture women in hospitals these days.
I think the dad called the baby "this tiny mush of what was almost like a little person" because it best represents his perspective at the time, which was that he didn't immediately register that it was an actual baby. It was actually a great way to express his shock and wonder.
I think it really showed how unexpected this all was. He went to the toilet thinking this was some sort of bowel movement related thing, I get why he didn't immediately recognize a newborn in there and probably thought something along the lines of 'my God it almost looks like a tiny person' before it clicked
I have a 2 month old. I knew I was having a baby, yet when she was put on my stomach my first thought was “mini queen alien from Aliens?” before I realized it was my daughter, and I quickly scooped her up.
My husband said when my daughter was coming out, that she looked like a gray blob of clay.
I think he was in shock, and he probably thought the baby had passed away.

I have a friend who went through a Cryptic pregnancy, the Doctor felt a lump and thought it was a swollen spleen (negative pregnancy tests), months of testing, aneamia etc. she went in to get a scan to check on the 'tumor' for the first time and it was very baby shaped. She had him a week later and hes a healthy 15 year old now. The Doctor who missed it saw her in the midwifery ward and said 'Well don't I feel silly'.. Same Doctor missed my mums lung cancer. Safe to say we switched Doctors pretty quickly.
EDIT: Forgot to clarify the Doctors words when feeling for the lump were: 'Well, it's definitely not your womb.'

Wow I’m going through that now I’ve had 3 ultrasounds and they see no baby my periods have been weird since may and I’ve been feeling strong movement. And my iron is so low I have to get iron infusions and that only happens when I’m pregnant I have 2 kids already

Look, I know doctors have a really really tough job, and that's still an understatement. But sometimes it just feels like... there should be repercussions for something like this: missing the pregnancy is one thing since it's rare, but your mom's lung cancer on top of it? Nah, that can't just slide!

I got told I was given a local anesthetic when I was getting stitched up after my first... and I don't believe them AT ALL. I was in an INSANE amount of pain, I felt every single stitch, writing in pain and they just got annoyed with me and told me to "sit still". Doctors who refuse to give anesthetic are horrible people in my book :')
Could be local anesthetic doesn't work for you? I got stitches for a bad cut on my chin once. Gave me a few shots, then asked if if I could feel them scratching on my chin. Yep. more shots. I think I took 6 shots in total, they were getting frustrated with it, when I decided to just let them stitch it up and I'd just stay as still as possible. I could still feel every one of the 5 stitches they put into my chin.
I really hope they gave them to you. That is beyond despicable if they didn't (but sadly wouldn't surprise me). My sister did get the shot for stitches PP but still could feel everything. Her doc did the right thing and offered general anesthesia. She refused it but at least they did the right thing and gave her a choice for better pain relief.

Yeah. I told the doc after my first childbirth that local anesthesia took about ten minutes longer to take effect than expected but he ignored me. Told me to stop twitching and just nurse my baby. I was nice and numb after he finished. The midwives who attended my other births listened and seemed to me to be more careful with the stitching.
I could still feel stitches through my epidural. It helped but not enough that it didn't hurt. Anesthesia also wears off me very quickly though so maybe I hadn't had a fresh dose 🤷🏼♀️
I just want to say these videos helped me realize I was in labor at 24 weeks. A lot of people question how these women don’t know they’re in labor,but when you’re not actively looking for labor signs it’s easy to write off contractions as something else. I walked into the hospital fully dilated and still not positive I was about to give birth. My tiny micro premie turned 6 months yesterday ❤

When my mother gave birth to both my brother and I, she flatlined and they brought her back. Twice. She died twice and my dad had to watch. He described it as the most terrifying thing he’d ever gone through. So when that dad said the same thing, it hit me pretty hard.
I only found out I was pregnant because of TikTok.
I have really infrequent periods (still think it could be PCOS but no diagnosis). Had one in late May. Got pregnant in June (didn’t know). Took a test in mid July which was negative. Saw a TikTok in September saying we should take one every month or something. I jokingly took this test so confident I couldn’t be pregnant. I took 3 more because I was in denial when it was positive.
Ultrasound showed I was already 13 weeks. I had no symptoms or anything. Now super happy and feel ready for this baby.
For many medical reasons we didn’t think I’d ever get pregnant but I did and it was amazing!
I have PCOS and I wanted a second child. The diagnosis had only come after having my first child, although I already knew. Anyway, I found out on Halloween that I was pregnant and 2 days later I felt the baby kick for the first time. I was half way through and had no idea. I had not taken any tests before because I was discouraged for 3 years trying and figured, what a waste of money this time. The doctor did not hesitate to give me a blood test and for once it was pregnant. She ended up being born 3 months later premature, but that's another story.

I had incredibly irregular periods before I had my first baby. My doctor told me to loose weight and recommended different natural remedies. Not ONCE did she tell me to test regularly. I ended up having a missed abortion, meaning I actually didn't recognize I was losing a child because I didn't even know I was pregnant at that time. It is great that so many people have so much access to so many food information nowadays. I wish you a great birth and a wonderful baby time :-)

I was like "get the baby! pick up the baby!!!" but then when he was shocked that it started crying I was like "oooohhhhh, they both thought the baby was dead or maybe not fully developed and they might have honestly been scared to touch it." Thankfully that baby started crying to alert them that they needed to get it out of the toilet! I couldn't imagine the shock for both of them!
I can imagine the poor baby girl being very much angry at life in that moment, she must have shout her lungs out 😂 Getting born and hearing your parents basically ghosting you 😂
(my daughter started protesting quite convincingly when taken off me for measures, "vitals" etc. It was clear she wasn't in pain, just very unhappy 😅 Took her a few seconds to calm down when I hold her again 😂 When she is older she'll know the story behind why she seems so angry at birth 😅)

My doc didn't use a local for sewing me up in 1990 and wouldn't get someone else, he just started in. 10 years later he almost lost a mom and baby, and lost his license.
After childhood abuse and being young I didn't feel like I could advocate for myself beyond speaking up initially.
And honestly, you only *should* have to ask once. Women shouldn't have to beg to get proper treatment. :(

How a doctor can say to a woman who is clearly going to be vulnerable to a huge amount of birth trauma because of how this unfolded that they couldn't give her anaesthetic for stitches is beyond me. I mean it's never right, but I feel like it takes a special kind of horrible to look at someone who has just been through that and say that. And to the Dad who just thought his wife gave birth to a stillborn baby on the toilet, only to find out the baby was alive, then watch his wife nearly die, still worrying about prem and sick the baby might be, to find out the baby was term and healthy, to then hear his wife "has to" have stitches with no anaesthetic is also just cruel (mostly for the woman, but this poor guy is also going through it!). I know I keep saying this, but I just can't imagine them saying to a guy, we're going to stitch up your penis with no anaesthetic because there's no time to wait.

I was 17 and had a tear. I had no epidural , nothing, he came very very fast and they did not numb me at all for my stitching. I asked if they were going to numb anything and he said no it would be over too quick to really bother with any local. It was only 3 or 4 stitches but I felt every one of them. So I Def believe that it happens, It did to me.
I've had three babies, one with an epidural and two without pain medication. All three resulted in needing stitches after birth. The pain during stitches on all three was terrible even the one that I had an epidural for.

I recently had a surprise delivery at home alone. First pregnancy, and she was three weeks early. MDJ, you and specifically this series prepared me. I was fortunate to have a pretty easy going pregnancy with the only thing my doctor worried about was her being small. I had been in labor about 48 hours but my contractions weren't very strong, and began to get farther apart before ramping up again. So I thought they were false contractions. But when they became more uncomfortable I called a friend to take me to the hospital, and not 30min later I was holding my baby girl. I didn't tear, and when I delivered I was fully aware, clear headed, and still able to move around with minimal discomfort. The medics, nurses, and everyone who took care of me after were very surprised by how calm I was during such an unusual delivery.

When getting stitches after giving birth at some point I flinched (although it didn't hurt much since I had had an epidural) and the doctor was immediately "Oh did that hurt?? Let me get you some lidocaine!" It didn't feel any different with the lidocaine tbh but there was 0 hesitation to get a local anesthetic.

Taking another pregnancy test is really the best advice.
A few months ago I went to my doctor for some tests for an unrelated condition and he sent me for a blood test to check my Hcg levels to confirm I’m not pregnant before further testing. It was negative and my period was due the next day. But I personally felt like something was off, so I waited 4 days, still didn’t have a period, and took an at home pregnancy test to find it was positive. Just because the first test is negative doesn’t mean you aren’t pregnant.
My real scenario post birth…

Doctor: Weird. Can you feel this? (Keeps stitching)
Me: Ow, yes!

I would have felt like punching the doctor and when the doc says oww I'd be like oh you felt that? How strange.
Nothing similar to birth but I had a pilonidal cyst lanced, but before gave me some morphine and local anesthetic. They came back tried to lance it. I was in pain and told them to stop. They immediately did and gave me more morphine. ALL THIS TO SAY it’s some bs for moms to not get anesthetic for something like birth.
I had the same thing happen with my first, when the doctor was stitching up my third degree tear. My epidural had been turned off and I could feel everything.

I was a sort-of Halloween baby. I was born in September. But, I was adopted. And, the day the adoption was finalized and my parents brought me home was Halloween. My dad always joked that he was never sure if they got a trick or a treat that day. 😆
My SIL's birthday is the day before Halloween. My husband always talks about how lucky she was as a kid. "She got cake and ice cream one day, and candy the next!"
I went in to septic shock during my labor and needed an emergency c section. My epidural didn’t take so they had to put me under. The idea that someone “didn’t have time” for anesthesia is crazy to me. I was dying and they still had time for anesthesia.
I don't know what's worse, losing just the wife and having a child you didn't expect, or losing both when you were expecting it, as my friend did with my best friend. She was pregnant, they were excited. He woke up one morning and she was just gone - around 4/5 months along. 😭

I wonder if antibiotics sometimes reduce the efficacy of birth control not because of medication interaction, but because of routine change. like if someone has to take a new med expressly with food or expressly without food, maybe that changes the time of day they take both medications. Or they take the antibiotic and mentally go "I took my meds today" and forget to take their birth control

11:19 after my mom gave birth to my sister (in a hospital in Saudi Arabia 31 yrs ago), she had a laceration. My mom doesn’t remember if there was an OB when she was delivering, but she remembers quite vividly that after she had her in her arms, there was only a nurse down there. She immediately started stitching and my mom described that like hot iron stabbing her. She screamed and reflexively kicked the nurse with her leg. The nurse snapped, shouted, and hit her leg and told her to stop fidgeting and immediately continued despite my mom’s kicking. I am still horrified and incredulous every time I remember this since mom told me the story, because i cannot fathom why in God’s name didn’t she demand she stop and call her doctor. And why didn’t she make a complaint to the hospital? Mind you we are not citizens of saudi arabia, we’re Egyptians. This wasn’t covered by medical insurance and every foreigner pays for their deliveries.
In the back of my mind with a lot of these got pregnant around antibiotics stories that maybe people that feel sick are generally less good at perfect pill taking. I know when I feel bad I'm forgetful.
One possibility for sure. I'm more likely to lose my sense of time etc. if I've got fever rather than become forgetful, but basically same consequence.
I'd also think the disease itself could sometimes have an effect. After all you're not getting antibiotics for nothing. Something in your body is already off, and maybe it means the chemicals won't be absorbed like they should.
I'm wondering if antibiotics don't increase fertility rather than just decrease the effectiveness of birth control.
I was infertile for 4.5 years, did 6 rounds of IUI fertility treatments with medication which didn't work. I was proscribed antibiotics for an injury while I was taking a break from fertility treatments before we planned to try IVF and I got pregnant.
I get the 💩 or vomit from some antibiotics so that makes oral contraceptives void, too.

The amount of pain we're expected to endure just for having uteruses is unacceptable. We usually can't even get local anesthetic for IUD placements/removals, so I'm totally not surprised doctors refuse to use it for LITERALLY PUTTING IN STITCHES just because it's an OB/GYN procedure. Imagine not giving anesthetic for sewing up any other kind of injury. But it's just normalized if it's about periods or babies or birth control.
On the flip of this anesthetic drugs are NOT candy they are drugs and actually very potent and very serious drugs. They are very safe but especially getting put under has risks and should only be done if absolutely needed. It can cause damage to teeth from falling if not properly awake and from incorrect tube placement it can cause nerve damage, and organ damage including cardiac arrest. It also is well known to cause deaths some of which is accidental due to incorrect dosages one study said the deaths are as high as 316 people every year in the US. Now it still is extremely safe with the numbers of 0.4 to 0.69/100 000.
If you need serious surgery that’s most typically far more important than the tiny rate of death/body damage from going under but it also does come with risk like all drugs.

I’ve survived a few IUD placements. My first one was the worst. I’d followed the instructions to take a megadose of ibuprofen (SO bad for my stomach lining!), but clearly it wasn’t enough to keep me from almost fainting from the pain. I began to see stars and my hearing went staticky. The nurse saw me start to go, grabbed my hand, and said “Stay with me!”
I don’t know what pain relief would be optimal for a situation like that (outpatient, deep internal organ, in a clinic not a hospital), but in this day and age, there’s gotta be something else besides white-knuckling through it.
@@catc8927 Sorry for the rant. The tl;dr is that we have something better than NSAIDs for IUD procedures; it's local anesthetic. And it's bullshit that the "standard of care" is so needlessly painful and traumatic.
One of my friends was discussing this last week. Apparently, OTC pain meds do pretty much nothing. Either most providers don't know this - because OB/GYN care is *especially* outdated compared to other specialties** - or they do know, but just don't care, and tell patients to take NSAIDs basically as a placebo. I've seen people on Twitter quote presenters at OB/GYN conferences who straight-up admit to lying to their patients about how much things will hurt. Basically, OB/GYN patients and female patients in general are often treated like shit.
And yes, you can ABSOLUTELY get local anesthetic for IUD placements. However, most offices/practitioners will not even consider it as an option. If you ask, they'll say they "can't do it", but I suspect they just don't like having to add the extra time it take for it to kick in, even if it does cost very little. God forbid they wait for patients, not the other way around /s.
**Actually, the state of OB/GYN care in the 1970s English-speaking world was so terrible that Archie Cochrane, a Scottish physician who advocated for evidence-based practices based especially on randomized controlled trials (which, I must add, is dubiously ethical in the realm of prenatal, perinatal, and postnatal care) awarded the specialty the "wooden spoon" following the tradition of awarding this joke prize to the worst performing student in the class; in this case, as the BMJ says, "for being the least evidence based medical specialty". One can argue that evidence-based obstetric care - not midwifery, which is a separate tradition entirely - only dates back to a few years before then. I can also say that I've had an IUD inserted in the US and in Germany, and I can't remember all the differences, but while both procedures hurt, I was in a lot of pain for about 8 hours (plus some more mild pain fora few hours beyond that) after my first insertion in the US, but only about 1 hour after my second one in Germany. I had a good experience with both doctors, so I really think it's more of a cultural thing.

My aunt knows a woman that had 9 kids. The last was mistaken for constipation and delivered while using an outhouse. Husband had to dismantle the seat of the outhouse and retrieve the baby.
Everyone was fine after being cleaned up though. Thankfully baby didn't land face down!

Look, I've run into Docs that honestly don't think the cervix feels pain, that thinks that a local is unnecessary for postpartum suturing, that thinks that the cramps aren't that bad when childbirth was easier. The only answer I have for this is that they still call the person that graduates from medical school with the lowest grade "Doctor".

It made me kind of sad actually that the dad was like “Oh! The baby is actually alive!” when she started crying. I can’t even imagine what it would be like to have your partner go through a traumatic birth after you didn’t know they were pregnant, just to think you’d lost the baby. Also, based on a lot of experience I’ve had with doctors, and the experiences of others in the comment section, I feel like there are lots of Sadistic doctors out there (ie the “no time for local anesthetic” BS from this episode). It reminds me of “Dentist!” from Little Shop of Horrors.

I feel you about being nervous to see any doctor but in my experience - doctors involved in this work are the absolute best. I've never had one that made me feel more nervous.
It all depends on the doctor. I have went through 8 different gynecologists untill I found one that was right for me. He was treating me in all 3 of my pregnancies (all high risk) and a bit after the last one. He retired a year ago and I'm searching again. Hope I'll find one soon
I now have an urogynecolgist, she is a Wonderful doctor, and she is very gentle if I need an intervention in Her specialty.
I've had some rotten gyne , who acted like they hated women. If you're not happy in your chosen specialty, don't take it out on me.
And I am neurodivergent- have sensory issues, gain my confidence first before you approach ME
By all means. Start out by being open about your concerns. Literally say: "Can you please guide me through what awaits me, as we go? Because I'm really anxious and don't want to join the choir of women with bad gynaecologist visit experiences"
Literally say it. If they are dismissive and have anything other than a mindful reaction, you have the right to get up and walk out at any given time. And in best case, they ace this introduction test of yours and you'll know that you're probably in good hands.

Another Halloweenie! I was born in the morning on the 31st many decades ago. Over the years I have met nearly a dozen other people who share my birthday, one of whom was born in the same hospital as I in the same year. I hope their little Jackie has as much fun as I have had with this date as I have had.

I just cannot get over his face when he saw the baby in the toilet. My first thought would be to get the baby out of there because the water is cold and not wanting her to get hypothermia. But when you are younger and the unexpected happens, panic tends to overwhelm any logical things to do. At least they had a good outcome
it also seems like they assumed it was stillborn - they were surprised when the baby started crying and were like "oh it's alive!"
I was a cryptid (yes cryptid) pregnancy. My mom was 20 wks when she told her doctor that he can day she's not pregnant all he wants but she wasn't leaving until he did a blood draw (urine kept coming up negative). Lo and behold, 32 years later here we are.

I'm grateful that home pregnancy tests have become so simple and reliable!! In the mid-80's when I first started using them, they were literally a science project! Little test tube to put in a stand with a mirror underneath, wait what felt like eons (30 min? Overnight?)to see if a floating ring was visible in the bottom of the delicately undisturbed angled mirror! AUGH! Crazy hard, right?! Times have changed.
I’m surprised they asked some cultures it is the parents job to cut the cord so although they were in shock and like uh no just do it, I’m glad they still respectfully offered.

As far as the local anesthetic arguments near the end, THANK YOU!!!!!! I have been told for many MANY “quick” procedures that “there’s no need for the local because [procedure] will be fast” OR “the shot for the local anesthetic will hurt worse than [procedure] will” 😡
Of course the local anesthesia will hurt worse...... because after it everything should be numb!

I did this bc I have a spinal cord injury and nerve damage from untreated bone spurs tearing into my spinal cord. I constantly feel like I'm being electrocuted. I was laying in bed crying in pain and just screamed "SOMEBODY SEDATE ME BEFORE I LOSE MY MIND" think of your brain constantly tingling a d itching and BURNING bc the pain in your spine is so terrible. Its goes from head to toe and you cant even think and every movement stings and burns.
You bet they finally prescribed me a good medication and scheduled me for an epidural. I described my pain and the stuff I said above^ and boom. Treated. Someone finally looked at me and saw my suffering and realized how fucking scared I was. It's so traumatic to be in such pain, I never want to birth a kid bc if it means I experience similar or worse pain.
I had an episiotomy and was stitched up after, all without anesthetic. I screamed when the doctor cut me (no warning/consent whatsoever, and no apology after). I have found so many women with similar stories, it just makes me sick. Absolutely horrendous and unacceptable.
I react the same way when there's a "newborn" baby in the shot, MDJ. Look at that 3 month old! :D
As a new first time mama as of October 27th, I now completely relate to all of these women who say that they just thought they had to poop. I did not realize how similar the feeling of pushing a baby out was to pooping until I was in labor with my baby girl.

They do. I used to get the kits all the time. You can select age range, I think it's 14 yrs and older. I've made incredibly cool things that are very practical. I really should sign up again. I absolutely love everything I've made. A lock box where the door looks like a camera shutter. Flashlight that turns into a lantern. Electric pencil sharpener. A clamp on desk lamp with adjustable arms. A calendar that changes the date and day of the week when you turn the handle. They are all hard to describe but if you go to there site you'll see what you can make. You can also choose category of what you're interested in. They even have cooking and craft kits.
I love this show. I didn't know I was pregnant with my first child until the day before I delivered. I was told I was only about 3 months along and had actually lost 15 lbs. I had my period the entire time
I gave birth about a month ago, so labor pains are fresh in my mind. If your constipation is THAT painful, it's not constipation. Either that or I feel very sorry for you and you should probably seek medical attention.

I took two pregnancy tests well within the time frame, which would be positive one at the beginning of the week, and one at the end, both were negative. I guess I got a bad box. My baby is 2 months now and doing great!

9:12 to be fair, my son looked about like that when he was born. 😂 He was 9 lbs 15 oz and I've had friends whose babies weren't that big until 2-4 months old.

I don’t know if you’ll see this comment bc it’s been a few days, but MDJ I’m so grateful for your monthly rants about doing the best you can with the information you have. My husband recently passed away at 31 from undiagnosed hypertension, when I was 13 weeks pregnant. I keep thinking of all the what-ifs and the signs he may have been sick and the fact we had a blood pressure monitor at home and kicking myself for not doing something sooner, but then I hear your voice in my head and I know there was no reason for me to think he could be in danger of dying at 31 years old and I can’t do anything about it now so I need to try not to feel guilty. Most of the time that works. I appreciate you MDJ!
I think the doctor after my first child either didn't use a local or it didn't work- because I felt EVERYTHING when she sewed me. With the next three kids and other doctors, I only felt the local sting a bit.
My husband is the same way with cutting the umbilical cord. They ask if he wants to each time and each time he's like nope sorry but that's your job as the medical team. Don't hand me any surgical scissors and ask me to cut a body part (we know there's no nerve feelings in it but still). I respect it. Wouldn't want to either 😅
My husband never cut the cord in 5 births. By I did at the birthing parent cut it once! It was kinda cool lol

I have a close family friend who didn't know she was pregnant until her water broke. I went to her baby shower, and the baby is so beautiful. But none of us could believe it. She couldn't believe it either. I know that she also did all the right things.

I was stitched twice without anesthetic. Once after my 10.9lb child and once after my 10.5lb child. The Dr in both instances said, it's ok I'm almost done.

I just stumbled upon your channel a few days ago. I’ve been a labor and delivery nurse for almost ten years now. I have often found myself wandering how can anyone not know they’re pregnant. I definitely knew when I was pregnant both times, especially with all the fetal movement and hyperemesis. I appreciate your views on this topic and it’s helped me to understand that this can truly happen and I should not be so quick to judge.
About anesthetics! Not that I had a bad dentist (retired), procedure wise, not at all, but I am a chronic severe (nerve) pain patient and, innocently enough, when I was about to have a root canal, I gave my dentist a list of my medications (buprenorphine patches + gabapentin; high dosage, both) and he absolutely plain out refused to put some numbing in my mouth! I, yes, underwent my first ever root canal, with 0 pain relief. And I had to come back 3 times because he couldn't take the root out in one go, as there was (I think) an "infection" or "inflammation", something along those lines. The worst. I later told my GP and he was shocked!
My epidural was still in effect when I got stitched up no need for more pain relief I also was happy to have a supervised student doctor do the stitches they did really well
Obviously its a very traumatic event and i would not wish a surprise delivery on anyone but im currently 7mo pregnant and I am kind of jealous of people who don't know they are pregnant until the end 😅
Hate to tell you this but both my children born at NZ biggest teaching hospital the stitching was without anaesthetic and the entire birth experience for number one terrifying and horrific. i told my kids about the births. both of them decided to never have children! In my concern to prevent unwanted pregnancy I did too good a job so I have no grandchildren😢 It didn’t matter what I said or wanted it was ignored. And i WAS very well prepared and informed. Your channel is important to empower and educate. You are doing an important job.

I tore with my second and I told the doctor I could feel her stitches. They didn’t hurt per say but I could feel it and she was like ok here let me numb you some more. I didn’t even really ask just felt like I should let her know I could feel her messing around. She jumped right in to make double sure I was comfortable she has delivered 3 of my babies and I hope she delivers number 4 in a month.

A neighbour found out she was pregnant when she went into labour, granted he's like 28 now, but the doctor had told her it was an ovarian cyst somehow

I have a friend who was born in the bathroom 3 months premature, her mum did know she was pregnant but there was a storm which caused high traffic so the ambulance didn’t get there until she was an hour old

Everyone always wants to blame the antibiotics. They foget that the illness it is treating, can mean you don't absorb your pill (D&V) or means you foget to take it, or take it late.

I know we aren't supposed to drink in pregnancy, which working in the alcohol industry caused me to disclose to my coworkers a little sooner than intended, but I admit that the day we told my parents they were going to be grandparents we drank some champagne. I had only half a glass. My mother decided to chide me, telling me it wasn't safe. My dad's response was, "Michelle, you were drinking a beer the night you went into labor with Kelly. I don't think half a glass of champagne is going to do any damage." My mom turned so red.
Baby was born healthy, if very angry at being evicted.

I'm unsure about/don't remember getting a local anesthetic for my stitches, but then I just remembered I'd had an epidural, plus I was so out of it by then (awake for one and a half days straight, over 20 hours of labor) that I forgot over half of everything anyway! 😅😂❤
