Looking good, pleased to see I'm not the only one using the nick-bend-weld-grind method to shape the tubing in the subframe. Good choice keeping it nice and short, too. I like it.

Great videos - very inspiring! - I'm in Aus too (NSW) and starting my first cafe racer project. Are there any tips for the rego side of things? Does anything needs certification or can I just take the finished bike for the blue slip process in NSW?

Any idea on how hard it will be to get an engineering certificate for cutting the frame and doing the rear hoop. I’m from down in Vic but assume the process will be similar and just wondering if it will be worth the cost and hassle on a budget bike

At first i was man that's a big seat hoop! Lol. Then final result looks amazing! My scalpel has a lot of miles on her to and still going. Great music choice !

looking good man, those little seams on top of the frame were bothering me too, hope you do grind them down and weld it. Looking forward to the seat build.
I did brother! It was just a matter of adding some strength back into it the frame after I cut them off. they are definitely gone now tho :)
Since your an Aussie, do you know if welding on a new loop requires an engineering certificate for rego?
Is it safe to cut frame and change it? I mean is it will break?
Not to make more work for you Dan, but when you had the tank propped up at the start, I could TOTALLY envision a straight pipe running from the back of the tank to the hoop (and get rid of the seat dip in the middle). It wouldn't undo what you just did for the hoop, just add to it :). I double dog dare you! 😎

What is the name and numbering of metal used for loop
That CB would look sick with some 70/30 knobbys on it but great bike been watching you for awhile now,I'm aboot to build a kick only CB350 bobber headlight/running light only don't need much here in Texas lol

I'm a new subscriber to your channel working my way through your videos (love your stuff by the way) awesome. Never owned a road bike and want to build a cafe racer as a first road bike. I have a tip for cleaning any alloy parts including your engine if your interested. You probably already have your own cleaning technique but thought it could hurt to add a different perspective.

@@CafeRacerGarage See the results of my first video (on my channel) I know its a dirt bike alloy frame lol, but the engines, exhaust pipes and radiators of my last 2 x project bikes and came up just as well :) I need to edit some footage soon and put it up. I use Ali brite Aluminium cleaner stronger mix than the bottle suggest with PPE and a 3M scotch brite hand pad 7447, I think its also available from the states in a wheel version for drills and wheel grinder. Car painters use them for metal prep work. The pad is a metal not nylon. Check out Cameron Niela youtube and his webpage site Pryme MX

@@Jay-mz7dr Ha ha I bought his scotch bright wheel and sanding wheel off his website after seeing that video a few months back, what i didn't realise was the RPM of my bench grinder was way to high so I put it in my draw for hopefully one day getting a linishing machine for this tool, The main thing im happy about is that I'm learning and supporting another channel in the process. thank you so much for the help, you are an awesome guy to take the time leave this comment brother :)
Cafe Racer Garage what a coincide. I found the Ali Brite here in Australia as a local substitute. And I build a lift table out of timber similar to yours a year ago. After seeing it on another website. Same Jack from SCA. For cleaning I just use the hand pad got a box on line they work well. And a horse hair paint brush for the tight spots. It’s a little time consuming but great results
I know you said it doesn't have to be Tig, but I just figured I'd ask an expert... Can I use flux core for a similar project? I have a 1980 CB750f and I'm trying to do something similar.

For someone who needs pratice with the Tig ..you got one hell of a steady hand and coordinated feed hand mines all over the place and yeah i know what you mean ..its an amazing welder. ..i just need a heck load more practice meself lol...

Crazy hay, I used to do that a lot but since I don't like to shower everything in sparks I put it back on again lol

You definitely have some slick fab skills! I just ordered a aliexpress hoop, and its bloody stainless. You think I'll get away with burning it in with standard mig wire and argoshield?

Hi mate, great question by the way and thank you for your kind words :) In relation to your hoop, are you 100% sure its stainless?
try to stick a magnet to it, if it sticks it may be a low grade stainless like 304 so welding it shouldn't be much of an issue, You can weld stainless to mild but it's not recommended if you can avoid it. If a magnet doesn't stick to it then It will be a 316 grade and therefore a high-grade stainless so I would try and get a mild hoop if you can. Welding 316 Stainless to mild steel can crack if you're not careful. I hope that helps. Any more questions just ask brother ;)
@@CafeRacerGarage Yep its 316 for sure, magnet doesn't stick at all. I'm used to Chinese parts being crap because they are cheaply made (and cheap) but not to them being crap because they are made of expensive material right? I know its not recommended but there cant be much stress on a rear hoop. Its a mate of my daughters GN250 that he's learning on. Not saying I should do it badly because its a GN, but its not the fastest machine out there. What do you think, fit for the purpose?
@@gregnovak0070 You can do it if you want, Just prep the join so it will be strong :) Always do a test weld before the main project if that is posable :) saves you making a mess trying to get the settings right on the main project :)
@@CafeRacerGarage Burnt the stainless hoop in just fine and welds dressed up nicely. Pity I must have measured it wrong and the hoops 30mm to long. Never mind, but it off and do it again.

Those wheels are starting to become the norm these days. Nice that they are, the old style wheels have more of a cafe feel for me. It's the most visible part. My kz550 wheels look amazing. Just sayin.

I find it difficult to understand how those japanese manufacturers got away with those badly made weldings in the 70ies. Looks like bird droppings! Pressed sheetmetal and ugly weldings...easy to make improvements! ;-) In short...YES, you must remove that edgy weld by the seat! Looks awful! And now that I said it...you'll always see it if you don't! :-)

They where supposed to hold the bike together, no one cared how it looked because it was covered with a seat, airbox, side plates and whatever. Since they are still here today maybe they where not that bad, was they?
@@johannilsson1889 They were cheap! Like Taiwan after them, Korea after them and like chinese today. And the fact that they always started, no oilleak and cheap. Good combo in those days. :-)
