    Dear Mr Tim,as fitter and turner in my younger days,a trick that always got me out trouble when over shooting a final size,was to run a knurl over the shaft.Doing this knurl will over size the diameter and then you can turn it back to its final diameter ( PS.this was only done when appearance didn’t matter.I hope this idea can come in handy one day.)     that was a cool way to copy the MT2 by using the dial indicator and get the correct angle

    I think you will find that the little bit of extra slop from over shooting the final diameter will be necessary to take up the error from flipping it around in the chuck. Also it won't hurt anything if it's a little bit off because the die will try to center itself as long as it's held perpendicular to the work.

      I have a commercial unit purchased and sold on eBay and it has some slop. It needs it to walk itself as it threads. I’m making one now from 4140 for some very large dies I have for threading up to 30mm-1.0.

      Me too I haven’t seen any lathe under 12” worth attempting tool making. At least none of the ones I’ve previously owned were close to capable. My 13” can make itself.

    misalign the tailstock by the amount needed so an mt2 between centers gives you the same distance to the tool, that way you can turn the entire taper even with powerfeed wich makes for a really smooth and precise outcome :)

      But I just spent all that time getting it centered for the guide part haha

    Blue cut away mtrl means you are cutting to fast, feeding to fast, or cutting to deep. When you see blue adjust your speeds and feeds. Also If you make it fixed to the piece you just made with space behind the die you can just use the tail stock locked in place and it will pull itself out as it cuts the threads, holding it is sketchy if the lathe is running. But looks good. oh ya also every time you remove the part from the chuck you change the orientation, to keep it tight on tolerances keep it in the chuck for as many processes as possible before removing. I didn't realize this is for hand die cutting with the spindle locked rather than cutting under power so its perfect how it is!

    Add a handle that works like a lathe dog with a ball end. Mine will keep it from spinning and the ball allows it to slide back and forth over the carriage without catching. Or you could make a guide track off the carriage. It’s a lot easier and less setup threading this way. Besides far more options.

    Did the compound and carriage screw got loosen with those wobbling turning? I had mine that just unscrew despite tightening prior to turn steel.

      If you're asking about where I think you're asking - it didn't, I just tightened it down to lock the cross slide in place a bit better.

      Hey thanks! I agree and usually put music over it to help make it less offensive but then a lot of people comment telling me they hate the music so I now I just add it or not depending on my mood when I'm editing. Can't make everyone happy ha.

    All that work for a “die nut” ! It is not meant for screw cutting !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! From a tradesman point of view this is frustrating !

    With machining precision tools you need to be precise with your measurments. Come on man you can always sand and polish to get the finish you want but be precise.

    🤦‍♂️ Dude!!! How have you been doing so much work and so many projects without your tailstock being aligned????? It’s obvious that you are new to this and it is just a hobby but you really need to think more precisely. Check out some of the videos from Dave M, he is an engineer and is pretty obsessive about his stuff being trued to get some tips!
