I travel to a friends house with JD and help dig out a perimeter for a concrete pad and future storage shed. A little backhoe work and a lot of toothbar.
Last February I did a similar 44x68 project with my 2305 for my pole barn. I learned a lot. Weather was not favorable over a 10 day period and I was on a tight timeline. I used my tooth bar and a box blade. I got a lot of nice top soil in a pile. I put 157 tons of rock back in. In hindsight I would have started with a gas edger and rented a sod cutter, then tilled. I borrowed a laser level part way through. It turned out fine and I saved a ton instead of hiring someone. I was able to be fairly surgical and preserved the surrounding grass. Live and learn. It’s always nice to be able to use a tractor to return a favor for a friend or neighbor. It’s nice to see similar looking old firemen working smarter and not harder now that we’ve learned better.
Seems like having the backhoe positioned far to the right would make the tractor more tippy toward the right side. Plus by having it centered would place the weight further back so it would provide more ballast for a full bucket.
Nice video. Always nice to see all that can be done with then smaller tractors. You mentioned how tipsy the tractor felt- I have the same machine. Wheel weights help quite a bit, also keep the bucket low on uneven ground, (especially when loaded).
Ya done a good job at digging out the space with your loader bucket. I need a tooth bar like that for my John Deere 1025R. Maybe ya can go back & forth over the space with a 3 point hitch mounted tiller & get the space to ya'lls likings & then smooth it all out with a land scaping rake. If I can offer a suggestion, instead of driving the bucket right in like a fork into cake what I do is lay the bucket down flat and put enough down pressure to ALMOST take the weight off the front wheels then casually use your roll to tip the blade in and then casually drive into it and you can control your depth as you go. The front tires will come up first but that helps cut the bucket right in (you won't need those teeth) then as you roll it back unless your digging to China the front tires will come back down and help pull you through it. Remember on a tractor slower is faster and it'll come out great.
The RPM speed control also controls the Hydro oil pump. So have it high like to the PTO star and speed is in the foot. Then 4-w drive and the tractor in Low. Max power to the job you are doing with the bucket. I also have a 1025R but an older version.
Mostly the RPMs only effects the flow output from the pump(GPM). Due to the design of the relief valve you will have a couple hundred extra PSI from idle to full throttle but usually it won't make a whole lot of difference.
Just a friendly hint try taking smaller bites skim the dirt and make a full pass instead of chunking out big pieces at once will make your life a lot easier and make the job go a lot smoother and quicker
Another nice video. You could try to give that bucket a few rattles when dumping, I've found the cleaner you keep that bucket behind the HH tooth bar the better it will dig.
I did a similar project this spring there was an old house foundation right along the side of my wife's old garden, we wanted to level it and put in raised beds instead. I used a 370B to dig out the foundation and then used the tiller to loosen up the top layer and level it out. The dealer had my landscape rake on back order and it didn't arrive until a couple days after I finished. Tiller and bucket can be a very good combination to shave off the top of a lump in the yard.
I have an 1025r noticed when breaking ground for an foundation I use the back-hoe to break the soil with then the soil comes right out, don't have the braking bar on the front bucket "need!" Live at NW Ark. Rocky

Thought i’d comment about that, I use that method quite often and its really great compared to just the FEL, the tiller pulverizes and then the bucket just scrapes and carries away loose dirt. Makes for nice even removal of material without gouging and leaves solid undisturbed soil below after scraping it down. Tiller makes for good ballast too.
Good vid im considering this model. A few things noticed in your video, always keep at high throttle, in 4wd and your backhoe centered as opposed to either side. Gotta tamp the bucked full open to get all the stuck dirt out. Backhoe being off centered will signifigantly throw off your center balance. Even more hairy when on inclines.
rssurfer It’s 20’, 7,000 GVW, I can haul up to 5,000, good size for the tractor and additional attachments, Brakes on rear axle, and ramps stored on the side. I don’t see myself towing more then 4,000lbs. I got it from a manufacturer in Alabama for $2,000. I wouldn’t call it heavy duty, but for my needs it’s perfect.
As Jan said, please center the backhoe. In one shot the left rear tire came up! I’m not trying to be a safety sally, I enjoy watching the tractor projects and wish you the best. Great work on this project. I have the same tooth bar and it does great work digging!
Looks like it would have been a good idea to have cut those tree trucks down before digging. They were getting very close to damaging you and the tractor.
I don't use the word love too often when I talk about my arsenal of tools, but I love the 1025r. I use it way more then I thought I would and tackle more projects I wouldn't have dream of doing. I'm always thinking in the back of my mind "how can I incorporate JD into what I'm doing today"? Wish I would have purchase one much sooner! No issues so far with over 170hrs on it currently.
Why so weak? Was that you being careful or is it really that weak? My tired 1989 ingersoll 6018 loader backhoe still yanks stumps that size out like weeds. I'm actually watching these videos to decide what machines are better as I'm going to buy a 4wd compact loader backhoe in the next few weeks. And this makes me think the Massey Ferguson I tested is the stronger machine.
Hi guys I just wanted to chime in with a little bit of experience of working my little green machine that hard to many times I guess because at 400 hours on the clock it stripped the splines out of the front drive shaft at the hydrostatic rear end output shaft!!!! 😩 $1'200 to fix it and I done the labor my self.

Nice job I am always amazed at how much work those little 1025’s can do. I think a box blade might have been handy in that space too for ripping it up

If you can make it float then it'll follow the ground contour and it won't matter as much what the tractor does

1200 dollars would have bought an nice lathe and spline attachment, Idea
May try the box blade next time with the scarifiers down to rip the ground first. Over all good job.
Next time might be soon. Daughter want a small turn around added to her drive.
