#63 Deere 1025R & Toothbar vs. Crushed Rock Driveway

  • This driveway looks like butter. The toothbar just dug right through it.
    In reality, the driveway was hard-packed. It had been in place for many years. For the prior owner, it had been used for parking a large tour-bus.
    The John Deere 1025R can accomplish much larger tasks than what one might first think.
    Of course, a larger tractor would have much more power, but it would not be able to maneuver in many of the tight location where I find myself.
    The backhow may not be the most powerful or smooth ever made, but it sure does beat a shovel.
    The Kubota BX may be better, who knows? Our videos have never been intended to show deficiency in other brands. Instead, we intend to show how effective and useful one of these subcompact tractors can be.
    Interested in the toothbar? See www.heavyhitch.com and use coupon code TTWT for 5% off at checkout.

    Hi Tim and family I just wanted to thank you after viewing this video I purchased the attachment from Heavy Hitch it worked fantastic.....I put in a 24 x 12 crushed stone pad for a storage container to sit upon today. Here in New Hampshire our soil contains more large rocks and shallow roots than not hence the granite state name....this made it short work after removing 6 inches of soil and getting down to the base material. Thank you again for the tutorials. The 1025r is my first tractor which I purchased 2 months ago....God bless

    That is the meanest looking toothbar I've ever seen on a compact. Besides making the FEL useful for digging it strengthens the bucket and reduces wear. Your ballasts are your best friend here. The toothbar on my W.R.Long is also the front cutting edge that protects the loaders cutting edge and bottom. Clever design. The attention to placing high wear steel plate to all the proper cutting edges means a lifetime of service.

    Tim, thought about buying a box scraper for your machine? It would be a bonus doing this type of earthwork. You could either pull the loaded box scraper with rippers down (or up) and it would keep it fairly level. Or push going in reverse and it would dig (depending on 3rd point length= shorter barely digs, longer digs uncontrollably) or if pulling: shorter lets rippers dig, longer lets rippers not touch and not allow the pulling blade to dig. Implement needs to be as level front to back and side to side as possible.

    HI, I LOVE THE LITTLE J.D., IT SEEMS TO HANDLE THE VERY HEAVY WEIGHT OF DRAINAGE ROCK LIKE A BIG MACHINE. I LIKE THE FACT THAT YOU DON'T TEAR UP HER PROPERTY AS YOU TWIST AND TURN.. MY OLD BOBCAT ALWAYS TEARS UP THE LAWN AND CREATES A LOT OF MUD AS IT MOVES ABOUT.
    I AM THINKING ABOUT THE TYPE OF TRACTOR I WANT TO DO A BUNCH OF SMALL PROJECTS . CAN YOU TELL ME IF YOU HAVE 2 BUCKETS? I SEE TEETH IN ONE VIDEO AND SMOOTH EDGED BUCKET IN ANOTHER.

    • @TractorTimewithTim
      @TractorTimewithTim  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Keith Perry I have only one bucket. The teeth are easily removable. You are right. It doesn't tear up the lawn. After all, it is my lawn mower! This tractor is not as good as a bobcat for some tasks, but it will do lots of tasks a bobcat can't. I love the small size, tight turning radius.
      You sometimes have to 'think it through', as the little guy doesn't have the brute force strength to do everything. My advice, get all the attachments you can afford. This is what makes it useful.

      +Tractor Time with Tim That's the way it goes. I go through the same thing. I have owned my mf for almost 2 years and I got the belly mower cause I just had to have it. I have used it 3 or 4 times. A finish mower and a small bush hog would have been more useful and a lot cheaper, though. Oh, well. You live and learn, I guess. I have a few videos up, but hope to have more later. Haven't had much time to use mine much, lately. I love watching and learning. I did learn one thing. When the bucket is used for grading, one needs to be careful cause the pistons can bend and break under the pressure. That is the main reason I got some blades. As long as the bucket isn't curled too much, there shouldn't be any worry, though. Thanks.

    Sometimes I look at your 1025R and think it's what I want & sometimes it seems too small. On the other hand Sometimes I look at your 2038R and think it's what I want (or a 2032) & sometimes it seems too big.

    • @genedameier8746
      @genedameier8746 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Maybe the 2025 would be just right. It's been described as a 1025 on steroids. And the series 1 and a half. Between the one series and the big frame two series.

    • @danielsharon524
      @danielsharon524 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@genedameier8746 It's the same physical size as a 2032/8R but you lose the 1025's maneuverability & yet only has capabilities of a 1025R (or less) so I don't really see the point of the 2025R exc. maybe a more comfortable ride/stability of the bigger frame but obviously for some people it makes sense. The 2032/8 seems like an incredibly well designed/versatile machine & I'd go for the extra HP of the 2038 at that point. I really like the Kubota B2601. It's in between the 1025R & 20xx physically and its capabilities and IMHO is what Deere should've done instead of the 2025R. I also like that it has a 3-speed Hydrostatic and no tier IV (?) Emissions compared to the 2032/8R. I'm just not crazy about some of Kubota's other features when compared to the Deere (treadle pedal, metal hood, deck/loader attaching) but is still a consideration. I think since I originally posted this I saw/sat on one. I was not impressed w/my local Kubota dealer but I'm 2 hrs from Messick's and an hour from DE Deere/Kubota dealers w/no sales tax. I've also come to appreciate Deere's "proprietary" loader attaching system. The 2601's physical size is exactly what I want. If Deere had something comparable I'd probably already have one on order.
      I do appreciate the advice however!

    • @danielsharon524
      @danielsharon524 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@genedameier8746 Actually, I stand corrected here. I thought the 2025R & 203XR were the same size physically but they're not. The 2 series brochure is awful regarding dimensions. Now I need to check the specs again compared to the 1025R vs. 2025R. Maybe that tractor is a consideration amd is closer to the B2601 than I realized.

    You don't hear of it often, I know I didn't, but I use to extend my bucket all the way out like that and use the forks, one time, not sure why but the pressure of pushing with bucket let out popped one of the cylinder rods out, it just couldn't take the pressure so just keep that in mind when doing that, wierd, never heard of it happening but it didn't me and dealer said its really hard on it to out that kind of pressure on it, to fold the bucket in a little so its not all the way out and I've never had it happen again yet, knock on wood lol

    How long are those ramps, 6 or 8 feet?
    I noticed Your BH bottom was very close to hitting the street as You loaded
    My trailer has the beaver tail with 4 foot ramps and I definitely can't load on hard pavement
    Fortunately I don't trailer it very often with the Backhoe on it but even with the Box Blade if the tail drops any it will get caught on the ends of the ramps
    Its all about trailer design and loading

    Tim,
    As a 1025r owner myself, I would have to say I like the sound of the tractor better. I kept trying to figure out how you two were talking to each other while you were on the tractor and it distracted me from some great video.
    I am curious how you were doing it though. I saw what looked like a kids microphone on your hat, buy what was your setup? My wife is deaf so for us to communicate verbally, I have to shutdown the tractor which can be a real pain when we are doing a task and I need her to move somewhere or something.

    Are wheel weights necessary in the rear with the backhoe in place? Or, do you simply leave them on permanently? What size are the wheel weights? Great share!

    • @TractorTimewithTim
      @TractorTimewithTim  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      More weight is almost always helpful. We leave the rear wheel weights on all of the time. Additionally, we have Rimguard fluid in the rear tires, adding about 100lbs per tire. rimguardsolutions.com/ttwt
      The wheel weights are 50lbs. Deere also makes a 'starter' weight which is 72lbs.

      Thank you! My wife and I are very much enjoying your many videos. The BX2680 versus the JD1025R was a superb series. No doubt, both tractors are terrific. We were leaning toward the orange since our neighbor has been running a BX24 TLB for years with pleasant results. However, we are going green. We DO feel that the JD's FEL lifting superiority is a very important spec. THANK YOU!!! for those tests. FEL lifting is everything in our thinking when it comes to tractors. We ran a decent size Ford tractor for many years (sold it), and the FEL was used extensively. Now, we need back hoe, but we don't want to sacrifice FEL lifting by going with a sub-compact tractor. We have extensive gardens and numerous fenced in enclosures around the acreage with entry gates that require the sub-compact size for tight space accessibility.

      I had removed my ROPS because “I’m a flat lander”. With more time and experience, I realized how tipsy they are.

If your not a fan of the seat belt and you find yourself about to roll , grab the steering wheel as tight as possible and don't let go until the tractor comes to a complete stop. Tim, Not sure if you do this already, but thought I'd share a tip I use with the tooth bar on my loader bucket.
      The mounting ears on my tooth bar each have a 1/2 inch x 3in. slot rather than a single hole for the mounting bolt.
      I simply drilled my corresponding bolt hole in each side of the bucket slightly forward (approx. 3/4in.) and used large wing nuts(optional) on the bolts. This allows me to attach the tooth bar, lock it in place for use, then simply loosen the wing nuts, pull the tooth bar out to disengage the tangs from the bucket edge, and then fold it back into the bucket when not needed, or for back dragging. Just tighten the wing nuts so the tooth bar doesn't flip back forward unintentionally.
      I have found that I can still grab a load of dirt or mulch with it in the folded back position.
      Hope this helps someone out there considering a tooth bar.
      By the way, great work and beautiful faith serving family. You are truly blessed.
      Thanks for all you do. God Bless.

      I find this little thing to be incredibly useful in 'tight' situations where larger equipment would not be able to navigate.

    Don't take my comments as a criticism, rather constructive observations. I have watched a lot of your videos and have subscribed to your channel. I have seen two people killed with tractors. One, for some reason, stood up, fell forward and was run over by his tractor. The second was someone working around the tractor as it was being operated. The operator lost sight of the person and backed over them. I have watched the second situation developing in several of your videos. You have people standing around or working near your tractor as you operate it. I won't describe the gore that is a human crushed by a tractor but know it will stay with you forever. Take my comment for what they are worth but be safe. Tractors are unforgiving.

    • @TractorTimewithTim
      @TractorTimewithTim  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Please understand that you only see snippets of a project. You don't see anything that goes on between those small clips. You don't see the pauses for 'safety discussion, etc' which DO occur when we are on a project with inexperienced folks.
      Further, if you are seeing it in the camera, then there is someone 'behind the camera' which sees even more than you do.
      Additionally you see more 'real world' tractor projects on this channel than on most any other channel. Most marketing videos are highly staged, highly produced, etc. It is easy to get used to this type of video, thinking that this is how projects 'should look'.
      We take a different approach, showing the nitty gritty of the project taking place. We want to show that getting the job done isn't always as 'clean' as one thinks by watching marketing videos. You will see this to an extreme in the video which comes out this afternoon.
      We do have safety rules onsite, and we ask that homeowners (and their children) obey those rules. If they won't (or in some cases CAN'T due to young age), we ask that they stay away from the work site.
      Of course I can't guarantee that we will never have a serious accident, but I do believe that you are over-estimating the risks that we are taking. Video shows a high resolution view of a small window of the project, but it cannot show the entire situation.
      I appreciate your comment, and thanks for watching.

      I didn't intend to put you on the defensive. However, I was in charge of a fire department aid crew in a rural community for 25 years and have driven agricultural equipment since I was 13. I don't believe it is possible to over stress safety when using these machines. I could write for a long time about the preventable accidents I have seen in the farming community, including one infant, but I believe that I have made my concerns known. I too hope you never have one of the accidents.

    • @TractorTimewithTim
      @TractorTimewithTim  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Mauser304 how could I help being defensive? Even in your response you don't acknowledge any of the items I mentioned, you essentially just reiterated how unsafe I'm being, going so far as to insinuate that i might run over an infant. I try to be kind in these comments, but come on!!!
      You simply cannot see the entirety of the work environment.
      Since listing credentials seems important to you,
      I have driven agricultural equipment since I was 4. I had full responsibility over a 150hp rig when 13, including daily lubrication, operating it all day, etc. At 15, I had daily maintenance and 16 hr days on a 320hp tractor.
      I know you are a long term viewer, and I appreciate that, and hope you remain as such. It is just needlessly hurtful to us to repeatedly insinuate that we are endangering everyone we encounter. I KNOW that this is NOT the case.
      Hit me up via the email listed in business contacts. We can talk about it further on the phone if you would like. Words on a page often do not portray one's thoughts accurately. I'm sure a brief phone conversation would be helpful.
