Composer Missy Mazzoli and her ensemble Victoire have teamed up with Wilco drummer Glenn Kotche, synth producer Lorna Dune and virtuosic vocalists Mellissa Hughes, Martha Cluver and Virginia Warnken (of Roomful of Teeth) to record Mazzoli’s expansive new work, Vespers for a New Dark Age, out now on New Amsterdam Records. Over two years in the making, Vespers for a New Dark Age is a brazen interpretation of the vespers prayer service that replaces the customary sacred verses with texts by poet Matthew Zapruder.

Commenting here on the whole piece as for me this is the conclusion. Musically the most interesting thing I have listened to in a long time. Almost comfortably crosses the genre lines, but then that lingering discomfort is as likely to reside in my ears as anywhere else. This striking piece gave me some truly beautiful and uplifting moments, and for me that is the very best that can be said about music as art. Few of the lyrics were hearable in full on coming to the music for the first time, so my enjoyment would be enhanced if these were published. All in all something to listen to again, there is real substance here. And something that makes me look forward to what you might do next. Thanks for this special music and for making it available here.
