Stunning! Haunting! I look forward to hearing its debut this weekend st the Sydney Opera House played by the Sydney symphony orchestra :-)

I felt suddenly so sad and excited, I want to cry because I feel something very important and beautiful ruind. I don't know the context, I'm not American, but I think I received that message and now I want to watch the whole opera

This beautiful piece was originally composed for the cellist, Jody Redhage. There are also super good performances on violin, by Jennifer Koh and Olivia De Prato respectively. ❤

Pittsburgh Opera just did this. Not great, maybe because it was so hard to hear the orchestra which was hidden above us. And somehow the libretto didn't convey the gravity of the homesteader's struggle.

What happened to productions that were actually pleasant to listen to? I get it. You have a message to convey. The American dream "is a house of sod" and you want us to be uncomfortable with it all. Just don't torture my ears for several hours.

Missy Mazzoli is at the top of many lists of "young, adventurous, and exceptional women composers," these days, yet the truth is more like she is at the top of ONE list. There are literally thousands of women all over the world who have been composing music that could be considered "concert music," and the majority of us are doing a very good job (considering how difficult it is) to have our music performed. There are others who follow in Mazzoli's shadow, yet here are just a few names you may be hearing more about in the near future; Hannah Lash, Nina Young, Hilary Purrington, Abbie Betinis, and those we've already met such as Caroline Shaw and Julia Wolfe (each of which won a Pulitzer Prize). Although I am also a composer, I started a little too late and would not be in the same generation as my young friends.

Frighteningly Beautiful

A truly wonderful living young composer and a female to boot ! : an antidote to all those who say "oh I don't like new painting , new architecture , new music and haven't heard the great music written since the easier , less dodecaphonic, less anxious , less tempestuous music of the post--1970's period . Maybe the world is just too much for many of us to hear its real beautiful and sinister and tragic self realized , wrestelled with and questioned in fierce music ! Now get out there and start programming us !!! Higdon , Mazzoli ,Andrew Norman and countless others are making exciting music and unleashing ideas . Wow - we live in such interesting times !
