I’m up to episode 31 after stumbling on your videos by searching Great Lakes sailing. I’ve been watching others vlogs and channels on sailing. I just happen to be from Chatham myself and living back in south western Ontario For last few years. Before watching I didn’t even know the about the Erie Canal or the ICW.
Back in 82 I helped bring a 44 foot Pearson from Fort Lauderdale up to Saint Michael's Maryland and most was on the ICW. We did hit bottom a few times mostly because it drew 8 feet. Something different around each turn. I couldn't imagine missing out on everything by going the outside route. Had the exact same problem with trying to get a picture of the dolphins, funny that you said that. We motor sailed from Fort Lauderdale to Daytona on the outside. A storm blew in and the owner stayed below the whole time so we figured everything is cool. I was with my best friend at the time and started with 2 hour shifts which went to 1 hour because we were getting sore from steering. Got in 6 hours ahead of schedule. Best 2 weeks of my life and I remember it like it happened yesterday. Fair seas guys
That sounds like a blast! We want to go on the outside pretty bad but it's all crappy weather or southerly wind. The ICW is fun however so we will just keep on trucking
I'm familiar with the Volvo diesels. Optimally they like to run 80 percent of full throttle. Plus or minus. If you can get 3000 rpm for prolonged periods, then perhaps look at your primary filter assembly, either for blockages, crud etc or that the actual filter assembly is rated for that flow. Another thing to look at , simple and easy is to check the pickup tube in your tank. Some owners might have installed a mesh on the tube. The mesh fouls up eventually and restricts the flow needed to maintain rpm. Had this happen in the middle of Georgian bay,no wind, 30 plus degrees ,you get the picture. A voice said in my head , try the simpler things first. And sure enough , crudded up pick up tube. Fair winds , great videos
You're killing me! How dare you live my dream life, and feel no guilt whatsoever. You both make it look like so darn much fun. I loved the singing, it's part of the honesty you two radiate. If you ever get up north, We are in Maine, beers are on us. Godspeed Lady K.
You probably dont give a damn but does someone know a method to log back into an instagram account?? I stupidly lost my login password. I appreciate any tips you can offer me!
@Malakai Valentin I really appreciate your reply. I found the site on google and Im trying it out now. Looks like it's gonna take quite some time so I will reply here later with my results.
Welcome to my historic city! Thank you for the positive review of my home state, it really is a wild wonderland hope y'all enjoyed it hope you come back!
Ive loved watching you guys. The moment where you are asking yourself why you didn't leave the 8-5 life earlier...really hit me because we are traveling for a year in a year and working our way to live that life forever. We are well on our way.
It’s a work in progress! There was a smidge of sewing talk in this episode! I’m still working on my camera presence, but I will give you some good info once I get comfy! - Candice
Running at 3000 will double fuel consumption. My Westerbeke has similar ratings but the manual also gives data on fuel consumption at that high rpm>almost triple! And speed does not increase proportionally. Congrats on reaching Florida!
I so agree. Smooth and less RPM is dramatically better. Try telling my teenage that. Damn the torpedoes full speed ahead as he laughs. It'd hard not to laugh back at him!
Thanks all! We only run that high when the tide gets us below 4kn which sucks. We have't really done it enough to notice a fuel consumption difference just yet but we will keep a close eye on it :) Thanks for the thoughts
I agree, the ICW is great specially if it is Your first time down South. It´s not only beautiful. I also gives You kind of a chance to get used to life on board and test Your boat. If You get stuck there it´s all kind of easy with Tow Bout US close by. Lot´s of stores where You can get all those little things, places where You can get things fixed.. Everything is close by and also a lot cheaper. Lot´s of boaters live along the ICW and there is good infrastructure almost in every place. Once You get out of the US things get different. Yeah, I think the ICW is a great way to start cruising life.. Cheers
This is the first time I’ve heard the word “infrastructure” since I left my job and I’m not even a little bit mad about it. Thank you! Great information as well! So many people are scared to take the ICW route because they’ve heard horror stories. Shoot! We did too, but we’ve taken our chances and have yet to run into any real problems (*knocks on wood*).
I remember our days in the ICW with our deep keel, hitting bottom every day at low tide. We wanted to go to Savannah but we went offshore at Charleston and skipped Georgia entirely. Glad to finally get to see it, thanks for the video tour :)
No problem at all! We debated on going offshore as well, but the wind and weather have a funny way of changing things. 😉 Savannah was on our must-see list, so we’re happy it all worked out the way it did.
Great little town, glad you hit Florida , hopefully the weather starts to work out a bit better than the last month. You guys are doing awesome. That engine looks brand new, impressive. The fish may be sturgeon which are huge , love to jump and in some places protected.
Here in T.O it's been rain and sleet. Your home tome got some snow. But Ontario is Ontario and I saw three guys wearing shorts. Thought I'd make you're day even better happier.
Cocoa has a great hardware store near the water. I don't know what the dinghy landing conditions are-see if Activecaptain has a note. A little farther away is the Lowes in Indian Harbour Beach. Take your dinghy up the canal next to the yacht club. Tie up to a tree by S. Patrick Dr. and work your way north and east towards the beach. You may also want to use that stop for easy access to Publix.
I did the Dismal Swamp Canal side of the ICW yesterday from Norfolk to South Mills, NC and hit three times, once with both keel and rudder. Magnolia has a winged keel and draws 5'. That first one at mile 20 got my attention and I'll be checking things once I hit warm water. You either took the Virginia Cut or live a charmed life....Great video, by the way!
I love your channel and have followed you from day one. Being new bees to sailing you bring a fresh look to starting out. Wish I were you but keep in mind that it's all the others out there that have the 9-5 jobs that make your dream possible. If everyone in the world stopped working and wanted to buy a boat and sail ............ wouldn't be pretty. Enjoy your new life and I'm looking forward to move videos.
Shit. Two in a row. Please know that we super appreciate you following! Please also note that we weren’t looking to offend anyone. See said response to Noone Anyone, just prior to your post.✌🏼
You are still a distance away from Titusville. You can have packages sent to them in advance. Call them for details. Even if you are not anchoring nearby it would be a quick stop to collect your items.

There's an Amazon Locker in a shopping plaza 3.7 miles from Palm Cove Marina Jacksonville). There's also a Publix and Ace Hardware in the same Plaza. Some Ace Hardwares do refills... I saw Carl fueled up at Palm Cove and they let him leave his boat there while he went for supplies.

Great vid guys, really enjoying 'em. How is the stack pack project going? I am curious to know whether having those panels up while you are sailing has any impact on the performance of the main?
Stack pack is less than ideal. Gah! Despite what I said in the video, I actually bought enough fabric to make a new Bimini. That was just over a year ago. We don’t need a Bimini, due to solar panels. I was shy a few feet to cut the sister side of the panels. A little embarrassed for that, but y’know what? At the end of the day, we now have fabric for many other “little” projects that I can perfect with the right material. Bam! Win!? As for the panels vs. main - that’s a damn good question! We’re obviously learning as we go with all of our “alterations”. Tim can chime in later, but I’m sure as shit this makes sense when we’re running down wind. I’ve never had a problem trimming the jib when we’re down wind. Mind you, we never had solar panels before now, so that’s a thing! Anyways, yeah it’s a bit of a chore running downwind these days. Never considered the panels to plan an effect otherwise. Something to think about (and pay attention to). Thanks for the input!
Right now I’m in the Mobile Bay. Friday will be heading to the Pensacola area. In December I’ll be moving down to Destin. I plan on heading down to the Keys in June.
Hey Lady K. Getting better and better...... you guys are almost in the groove and shedding your land skin. About the motor. I have a couple of md2030 f series. The max rpm on this series is 3100-3300. The sweet spot for torque and fuel efficiency is right around 2100-2400 rpm. Too much lower and stand a chance of coking up the exhaust/mixer elbow. Higher and your fuel consumption suffers........greatly. They're a great. Marinized Perkins. Bullet proof if taken care off. I typically run mine at 1800-2200 and open them up every now then for only short periods. Most important guage.....temp, assuming you're watching your dip stick. Keep up the vids.....good stufr. Capt Kaz
Wowza! That was a lot of info, but you’re not wrong! I don’t think. It makes sense to me! But Tim gets cozy with the engine, so I’ll let him give a better response! - Candice
Hey thanks for the advice :) All the way down here we've run 2100-2400 and watch the oil like a hawk. Change it once every 300 hours which works out to about 5-6 weeks, Temp is watched constantly as well and runs very low on the gauge. Oil pressure seems to always be bwteen 3 and 4 bar which i thought was low but it's always been there
We LOVE your "child like wonder" for cruising and its beauty. Don't ever lose that! Remember these days for when you are forced to pay your fun dues.

hi, you wanna send some of that 75above weather to sask ,5inches new snow and cold.
I'm jealous, cause up here in newfoundland we have low to mid single digits except when the rain storms come thru when it hits the mid teens.
I wish we could say we were jealous. We could! But we’d be lying and that’s just not how we roll. 😉
@@LadyKSailing theres 2-5 cm of snow in the forecast for tomorrow too....so id much rather be sailing down south right now than being here.

Just google Ace hardware. They fill your tanks. Come on around to the coast and lets have a beer or 12
Thanks that’s exactly where we got it done
Where are you on the coast?
Right now I’m in the Mobile Bay. Friday will be heading to the Pensacola area. In December I’ll be moving down to Destin. I plan on heading down to the Keys in June.
Where did you get your flag? No land nation.
That’s a no shoes nation flag which was coined by Kenny Chesney. We got it from amazon.
I am a naked gay sailor and I love to dance the Quick-Step!!
cannot get book in amazon .ca?
Hrmm. It showed up on the website post. Maybe try that?

Oil pressure seems to always be bwteen 3 and 4 bar which i thought was low but it's always been there
@@LadyKSailing ok.......well then you're good. You should get plenty of service. Good luck. We're watching.............CK
We are right behind you, also Canadian, will give you a shout on VHF if we catch up. Enjoy the trip.
