    Great video, I’m a school teacher and my voice has totally gone after an episode of flu. I’ve had my voice disappear before but never for this long. I’m worried that I may have made it worse by trying to work through it when it initially happened. Thanks for the explanation of laryngitis, very useful information.

      It's really tricky to rest your voice, especially if you need it for work! If your voice doesn't return even after resting it for a couple of weeks, then it might be worthwhile to check with your doctor to make sure that there isn't some other reason for your hoarse voice. I'm glad the video was helpful and I hope you get better soon :)

      Me too, i can maybe take a day off but 2 weeks is gonna be impossible. I end up working thru the day with 15 cough drops and 3 teas and just feeling exhausted by 5pm. I try not to talk at all until next day at 7:30am again. Today was my second day and it has been rough. Still 3 more days until the weekend

    Lost my voice over the course of four days because I was cheering for teammates at during awards but had an extremely dry mouth/throat at the time, then had to coach and also work in a loud kennel for the next three days. I woke up on day five and was completely incapable of producing sounds through my vocal chords lol. It was extremely frustrating but also a bit funny. Thankfully I didn't have to coach that day

    I’ve had a mild cough and cold like symptoms for two weeks.
    I work for a UK based airline and work 12 hour shifts where speaking is 99% of my job.
    Yesterday I woke up to my usual dry cough and continued into my day. Ten hours into a very verbal shift I started getting hoarse and raspy. By the time I got home my voice was so hoarse it was unrecognisable and by the evening I could barely produce a whisper. Home from work today and desperate to return. Lozenges, hot lemon water, etc are not even touching the problem. The cough seems to be making it worse. 😓

    • @DocUnlock
      @DocUnlock  5 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Hi Ricki, it sounds like you're having an absolutely terrible time. Unfortunately jobs that require a lot of talking, like working on an airline, can make the symptoms of Laryngitis even more difficult to bear.
      I would suggest checking in with your family doctor to make sure that your illness is indeed Laryngitis and not some other problem.
      If it is indeed Laryngitis, then resting your voice is going to be your best bet. Things like lozenges, lemon water etc can help some people with symptoms but unfortunately don't accelerate recovery. It sounds like these aren't working for you anyway. You may want to ask your doctor about other options for symptom relief while your immune system is doing its work.
      Hope you get better soon.

    • @rickicraven7583
      @rickicraven7583 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      DocUnlock
      Thank you for your reply.
      Today my GP prescribed steroid based nasal spray in hopes to calm the continuing dry cough which is keeping me up all night. She advised voice rest, steam, ibuprofen and paracetamol. I’m not holding out much hope on her advice speeding up the healing process. I’ll just rest my voice and try to be a patient patient.
      I’ve already been off work for two days. I hope this doesn’t go on for weeks. I still have zero voice.

    • @DocUnlock
      @DocUnlock  5 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      '...try to be a patient patient' - I like your sense of humour! :D
      Luckily the natural course of Laryngitis is not too prolonged - usually about 10-14 days for your voice to come back. Maybe even sooner depending on your immune system and the amount of vocal cords swelling.
      Thanks for your follow up post :)

    Cough go tablets consists of ingredients like Sonth (Zingiber officinale), Mulethi (Glycyrrhiza glabra), Pippali (Piper longum), Kali mirch (Piper nigrum), Laxmi vilas rasa, Abhrak bhasam, Tankan bhasma. It has anti-inflammatory, anti-allergic, immuno-modulator properties thus widely used in respiratory disorders, throat problems, cold, cough, & chronic laryngitis.

    Well done, great explanation 🤗 the only suggestion from me is ask your doctor to prescribe you some anti inflammatory and immune suppressant drugs such as prednisolone. I only use it 3 or 5 days then reduce the dose and stop. This drug is not recommended at early ages however if you have a very busy life and gotta go back to uni or work in at least within a week, try it. Life saver! Or just rest up 2 3 weeks.

    A sick person came at work about 4 days ago and unfortunately i caught that nasty virus she had as well. My throat started itching, then my nose got runny and after a day I started coughing and blowing my nose every 10 mins. I had a small fever during the first day that went away quickly, but 2 days in I started slowly losing my voice and sneezing constantly. Nasty yellowish mucus is coming out of my nose and whenever i sneeze. Today, i completely lost my voice hahaha.
    I was diagnosed with hypothyroidism about 5+ years ago. I follow my treatment since then and nothing like this happened to me before so i don't think this is one of the reasons why I lost my voice.

    I got sick while on vacation 3 weeks ago with laryngitis. Then I got home and caught a chest infection from a flight. Finished a course of antibiotics a few days ago now I’m back with laryngitis and my chest is a lot better. My throats so sore on one side, feel so much pressure in my throat and my voice is getting weaker/raspy & the hoarseness is real, although I do still have my voice. Does this sound quite normal? I lost my voice a couple days back, think it was Friday or Saturday. Still waiting on my voice to fully return,it's slowly returning cause I gargle with salt water,rested my voice,drank some hot chicken broth, only problem is I still can't talk long and sometimes I gotta fend off the dry coughs and to stop myself from clearing my throat and my nose is stuffed which is also annoying...

    I actually am a Music teacher who has never really experienced voice loss. It has started happening to me now and I am working to pinpoint the reason, but I had never thought to try whispering. My whisper sounds fairly normal compared to my speaking voice, but as a performer/teacher I instinctively tried to speak clearly and strongly, which does not sound good in this condition.

    Hi doctor .. I'm a teacher and I should talk more with children and since 6 months Im suffering from this problem..
    My family doctor suggested to give rest to voice. During my vacation it was cleared again from 2 days I'm facing the same problem. Can it be a different problem...... Hope for the best....

    • @DocUnlock
      @DocUnlock  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Ruhi, there are other reasons for a persisting hoarse voice eg. vocal cord polyp. If your voice is a persisting problem, your family doctor will be able to arrange for a full examination of your vocal cords. Assuming there is no medical reason for your hoarse voice, there are multiple ways to prevent vocal cord trauma for people like you who need to use their voice often. For example you can try using a small microphone and speaker system in the classroom. Also, voice therapy from a speech pathologist who is experienced in treating voice problems can help you use your voice in a healthy way (eg not speaking too loudly or softly).
      These are just some suggestions. You can have a look at this website for more information: www.nidcd.nih.gov/health/taking-care-your-voice

    • @lartikus3850

      Unfortunately yes, coughing slams the vocal folds together (to put it simply). Try your best to not clear your throat and cough, instead drink water. It’s hard but it’s worth it in the long run. Currently what I’m dealing with, best of luck!

    long shot, but can't find an answer and GP's don't open for a little while. But, I have all the symptoms, but then some extra ones - my shoulders feel heavy and hot, my throat is swollen to look at, and also interestingly, my eye lids!? They are SUPER swollen. I look like I've celebrated 420 for a straight year.. I think it still is but debating on whether or not I should continue working or just rest (I work for a repairs firm, I do need to make calls but normally not for extended amounts of time, like a call centre)
