I have no clue what I'm doing and other than 2 lucky Riichis I obtained in my first game, I have failed to get anything but draws

Mahjong has such strange rules.
'We randomly drew 8 of dots so that's the dora right?'
'No. The dora is actually 9 of dots.'
That has 'Little brother is inventing new rules midgame to win.' vibes.

if the dora indicator was the dora tile, then there would only be three dora tiles each round as opposed to four
which could be playable, but it reduces the power of dora significantly
imo it makes more sense to let all four dora tiles be alive, and the way that the dora indicator works allows that
