i love your super specific interest in the great lakes and shipwrecks haha. if you’re ever around toledo, ohio for some reason you should check out the great lakes museum! make sure you go when they let you tour the ships though bc that was definitely the coolest part

My favorite book this summer has been The Seas by Samantha Hunt! I picked it up at a library book sale but didn’t have high hopes for it but boy oh boy it was fantastic!
The vibes were fantastic! The unnamed narrator, though probably not terribly reliable, was so endearing. It was magical and sad but hopeful? It reminded me why Magic’s realism is one of the best genres 🧜🏼‍♀️🌊🐚

hey, since you mentioned a couple of times, that you don't like the cover on goodreads: did you know, that you can switch editions on there? I don't know if they'll have every (obscure) edition of your reads, but I always switch to the cover/ edition (Hardcover, Paperback), that I am reading (I think under book details you can see editions -> switch to this edition, or just type in the ISBN of your edition)

Always so happy when I see your videos come up on my home page! That Wild Geese book is gorgeous, especially with a cute note. I un-hauled 'Cloud Cuckoo Land' I decided that I'm never going to get to it. I was one of those unusual people who didn't like 'All The Light We Cannot See' though.

So happy to see you again, I love your videos and seeing Winston!! I picked up a very cheap copy of Maggie O'Farrell's 'The Marriage Portrait' at a second hand bookshop in my hometown recently, which was a pleasant surprise since it's a fairly popular recent release!

i picked up sophie’s world from a used bookstore recently just for that cover!!
i also have a hard time getting into fantasy but recently read the familiar by leigh bardugo and enjoyed that a lot. based in spain in late 16th century i have noticed that things i don’t like about a lot of typical modern fantasy books is the amount of info dumping and world building that feels totally unfamiliar and i just feel lost and bored and overwhelmed. also the mechanics of magic systems and stuff causes that for me. the familiar doesn’t have those elements, the protagonist is pretty much as in the dark about how her powers work as the reader. i’m also reading the night circus and i’m enjoying that too, even tho its fantasy, and i think it’s because it too is set in the “real” world, not modern era, and doesn’t have a heavy focus on magical mechanics, etc.

Would love to hear your thoughts on Herland when you get to it! I just picked up a copy at a used bookstore in New Jersey while I was on vacation, I'm looking forward to reading this summer, too! I looked it up and goodreads and found it's part of a trilogy! I love your taste in books and your enthusiasm for reading is sooo infectious and refreshing! Thanks for sharing your thoughts :) Also I feel the same way about getting lost in juicy big books, but I'm also not big into scifi/fantasy yet -- East of Eden, Crime and Punshiment, and Middlesex are my biggest/floppiest fiction books I own right now :) Happy reading!!

Hello! Cloud Cuckoo Land is a very good book, but personally All the Light We Cannot See is my favorite book from Anthony Doerr. Also, since you seem to love THICK albeit terrifying books, a recommendation I have for you is Cathedral by Ben Hopkins. The story follows a cast of characters as their lives are affected in unique ways by the building of a cathedral in their medieval German city named Hagenburg. When I finished the book, I cried. It seriously is so beautiful and affecting. I wish more people knew about it.

Hello, August!! so glad to see you again! i am currently reading The House of Rust by Khadja Abdalla Bajaber. Its a book that i feel you might like it is fantastical but not magic fantasy just "in the world are monsters and dangers that represent our inner feelings and insecurities and we have to learn to live with them or defeat them" type of fantasy ya know? im still reading it but im really liking it, there is a talking cat, a boat made out of bones, a girl that goes on a quest to save her father but also is looking for herself in the world, really good all the emotions. Kinda like The Little Prince but more emotional definitely.

Have you read any Helen DeWitt? Based on your fondness for The Fig Tree, you might enjoy her novel Lightning Rods, which is a hilarious tongue-in-cheek approach to solving the problem of sexual harassment in the workplace. I listened to the audiobook, and it's super well done.

Moon Road by Sarah Leipciger was fantastic!
We follow a divorced couple who's only daughter went missing when she was in her early 20's. The mother has been mentally affected by the disappearance of her only child, so much so, that she is still living in denial that her daughter may no longer be alive. She continues to write down how many days she has been missing; Holds annual "parties" in her name under the guise of "teen awareness", and listens out for the phone incase she calls for a ride home.
Meanwhile, her ex-husband, has had multiple failed marriages, many children (all of whom have been boys, besides his youngest, who is a girl) has come to the acceptance that he will never see his oldest alive again.
One day, both parents receive message from a police station in a remote part of the country, that they may have found the remains of their missing daughter.
Do they go and face fate, or do they continue to live in a world where their daughter is still roaming free and living in a tent on the side of a mountain, bird watching.
    Definitely a must read!

I really enjoy hearing your thoughts on books. I will confess I just bought Dreams of Dead Women's Handbags used online during your vlog! Ha. In part it is a cover buy because I am not great with finishing short story collections. But it instantly brought the memory of when my mother passed away and things that were tucked in some of her purses. I hope some of the stories are like that. I have Cloud Cuckoo Land but haven't read it yet! My two 5 star reads for the summer are The Rules of Magic and Magic Lessons - both by Alice Hoffman. I really enjoy magical realism. 🪄📖 ⚫🐦🔴👢
