I don't agree with your take at all. Yeah, she doesn't take herself serioiusly, but neither did a good chunk of my college professors. Like...some people are just all kinds of light-hearted, to take their minds off of how stressful their lives otherwise are. Jennifer...came across as 100% genuine to me, and I feel betrayed that you didn't finish it, since the ending...was completely bonkers, and that's the one part I wanted to hear you speak your mind about, since IDEK how I feel about that part, honestly. Ugh...
As an MCU fan, She-Hulk Series (despite having some good things about it) is not that great. Talking about positive things about the show, I do like the She-Hulk character, both episodes 1&8 are the best episodes that it offers, it’s great to see Abomination again, the Norton joke in episode 2 is genus, Madisynn is a hilarious bad character, the fourth wall break are unique, seeing bootleg versions of The Avengers in episode 5, a nice nod to The Incredible Hulk series in the finale, I now ship both She-Hulk and Daredevil & Wong and Madisynn, and most importantly it’s better than Eternals because at least I feel more about the characters from the show then almost every character in Eternals. Other than that, She-Hulk Series is the weakest Marvel Disney Plus series, I’ve ever seen. There’s barely any action scenes, tease a character (Daredevil) that everyone wants to see but have to wait two episodes to have that character show up (that’s something that the Hawkeye Series didn’t do), where it takes place in the timeline can be confusing, no mention of either General Ross nor Betty Ross (someone that we haven’t seen in live action since Incredible Hulk), was looking forward for a Hulk and Abomination rematch which they didn’t go forward with it, and the finale didn’t live up to the hype from the ending of the last episode because it is the most anticlimactic episode I’ve ever seen (even with its ultimate fourth wall break which they should’ve waited until Deadpool 3 in a situation like when the world is ending in the Fox universe, so he gets himself out of the Fox Studios and walks to the Walt Disney Studios and asks K.E.V.I.N. to be in the MCU).
The problem was that the writers admitted they cared more about making fun of trolls over writing a good story. Which stinks, cause She Hulk is a fun character and Tatiana Manslany is a great pick to play her, but it just feels like they got the wrong team to write this show. Daredevil was fun though.
Back in the day I’d play Marvel Ultimate Alliance, and She-Hulk was one of my favorite characters to play. Her attitude and fun-loving personality was a good contrast to some of the other characters (granted most of them were quite serious, even She-Hulk at times). Also in Lego Marvel Superheroes, She-Hulk is great, and I do like the actress they picked in this show, and I agree with you that they squandered the opportunity to make Jen Walters come to life on screen to instead make it about themselves. We need quieter stories in the MCU, no ensemble casts. Make Iron Man 1 for She-Hulk, then throw her in with other characters. It’s like they want to take the easy way out instead of creating compelling characters, but in the long run, people will lose interest. They lack confidence in their abilities, and then pull in fan-favorite characters like Daredevil and handle them with the tact of a toddler with a chainsaw. They need to focus up, tune out the incessant politicking, and write good character.
I just recently started the sixth season of my hero academia and it has a bunny hero who is a smartass asskicker and im like "wow this character was introduce in 3 episodes and she acts more like a she-hulk than the actual she-hulk.... and she is a friggin bunny girl".
In the comics, Jen felt she was too ordinary, too normal and loved becoming She-Hulk. The show should have been about people trying to take that from her.
This. Jen likes She Hulk. People close to her prefer Jen. Her story is about a woman growing into herself and becoming more of who she wants to be and naturally getting backlash from people who prefer the "old Jen" whether they have good intentions or not. The most important part of this is that Jen likes She Hulk more than anyone else on the planet and it's arguably the single most important part of her character. It's what makes her immediately different from her cousin.
@@ianr.navahuber2195 And as someone who has read her runs from Savage to the latest ongoing rainbow Rowell and as someone who thinks the show is fine I find Jen is profoundly mishandled as a result. She is the legit direct opposite and it's not done in a clever deliberate way. It's done in a way that suggests this is how the show wants us to actually perceive She Hulk and people act like it's 1:1 with the comics
@@rikudoubapeck to some degree I GET why they did that (to show more tatiana as jen, and not rely that much on CGI to have her as She Hulk all the show), BUT ON THE OTHER HAND it seems just .... dumb I get they also try to do the "jen has to now accept she hulk as part of who she is" but they just do it so randomly and rushed it gives whiplash in the 7th episode she was still in the mindset of "feeling eclipsed by her she hulk form, and wanting to feel accepted as jen" but suddenly by episode 8's end they want to convince us she now accepts her she hulk form... and i am like "did we skipped an episode?"
@@ShadowSonic2 “When we got into the writers’ room, inevitably things change as you’re developing the show and as you start writing. And one thing that we all realized very slowly was none of us are that adept at writing, you know, rousing trial scenes.” -Jessica Gao, interview with Variety Aug 16, 2022.
@@1krani the worst part is NOT that they didn't know how to write courtroom scenes. the worst part is them seemingly originally planning to make abomination's case the ongoing plot of THE ENTIRE SEASON and only after the initial planning they asked "hey, anyone among our writers knows how to write courtroom cases?" and when they realized NO ONE knows, they just scrapped everything, improvised and something and thought "This is it. No one will notice this wasn't just improvised"
@@ShadowSonic2 Yes they did. They quite literally said that the first episode was supposed to be a multi parter about the trial of Abomination but they had to drop that idea because they sucked at writing court drama, FOR A LAWYER.
Overall, the show's biggest problem was that rather than make a good show, the showrunners wanted to troll the very people they predicted would be triggered by the series. They wanted to be button-pushers.
@@joshuawells835 Why? The show represents exactly what was fun about the Sensational She-Hulk comics: weird situations and She-Hulk arguing with the creators of the story. And we got Tatiana to give a great performance as the central character. It is a good show.
@@Regenmacher175 Good Show is debatable. What I'm saying and what Doug was saying was it could have been better. For me, if the showrunner weren't as preoccupied with being trolls to the trolls they knew would get mad, maybe the show could have been better.
My main problem with this show is that in the comics Jen is very chill. The meta jokes are more about her and what she’s comfortable with like not wanting to be shown nude. Here the meta jokes are only used to try and make people mad so they’ll get publicity online. It’s what’s called “rage bait” and that’s not what Jen was ever about. To take a chill character and make her all about wanting to piss off the audience is a disservice to both the character and anyone trying to actually enjoy the show. That’s why I hate this one.
@AJraxUltima well, I’ll tell you I’m not incel but I’m am a big She Hulk fan. I wrote bad reviews so Disney could get the point and save this iconic character.
I love how they said they wanted to make a lawyer show but they admited they didn't know anything on how the law system worked and left the people who did very confused
agreed, that was probably my biggest problem with it besides the lame comedy(which i did laugh sometimes but a lot of misses) all they had to do was watch some harvey bird man and there you go. i didn't feel invested in most of the cases because it just wasn.t well written
Yeah. The only case that came close to well written was Daredevil's, and though I know different episodes have different writers, I like to believe Charlie Cox came up with that
Fun Fact: She Hulk was the first Marvel character (in the comics) to break the 4th wall. She was winking and cracking jokes to the audience before Deadpool did it.
@@ocarinaplaya When Deadpool does it, it's quick and doesn't take too much from what's happening in the moment. It's usually a wink and a nod. She-Hulk, the whole world stops and we gotta look her in the face and take her serious for a whole of ten seconds. That's 9 seconds wasted right there.
2:44 Being forced to do work you don't want to is a problem *everyone* deals with, not just women. And that's honestly one of the biggest issues in the whole show: presenting things as "women problems", while acting like men don't have the same issues, or implying that they're all caused by men somehow. The writing is sexist about 95% of the runtime to a point that even women who agree get annoyed by it.
On the tenth day of Disneycember, Doug Walker gave to me: Marvel’s craziest ending, Blue Sky’s first sequel, Order Glitchy Glitch, a Zemeckis remake, the best Fox family, a Marvel horror movie, Domee Shi’s debut, One of my favorite Disney shows, Blue Sky’s first movie, and the best Spider-Man game ever!
And also hunted by the government, was forced to partake in gladiatoral combat on an alien planet, witnessed some of his friends and allies around him die from Thanos, and lost the woman he fell in love with.
If Jen had said "Well, my dad violated me from ages of 12 to 18 and my Mom beat me because she was jealous"... ...People would still say that was nothing to be upset about and she should get over it.
No. No they didn’t. Him being abused was never in the MCU. She was just saying between the two of them, she’s had more practice managing her stress pre hulk than Banner did pre hulk. Bruce’s problem was immediately projecting his issues on to her and she had to explain to him she didn’t need to be lectured in managing stress when she already knows how to vs. Bruce learning it on the fly because he never learned how to before becoming Hulk.
Tatiana Maslany is amazing, she's way too great for this show. They seem to think that pointing out the bad writing will make them self aware and savvy, but no such luck.
Marvel Phase 4 has its really high highs, and REALLY low lows. This, is a really low low. And there's one major reason why. I'll let Theo from Haunting of Hill House explain it best "People f*** up. I guess you don’t get that, you don’t really get it until you f*** up. REALLY f*** up." Don't put characters on a pedestal. Challenge them. That's how you fix the writing issues in Marvel rn. Phase 4 focused too much on the agenda and the message and that's fine to have diversity, and something important to say. But if that's ALL your movie or show is, that's all people are gonna focus on. Too many characters especially the women of Phase 4 were used as role models, to be icons vs human beings. And here's the thing about being human: we're kinda trash. So you should show that. Not just in your villains, but your heroes too. As a woman myself, I found Jen INSUFFERABLE but not for any good reason, not like Allicent from House of the Dragon, who you hate but understand. I just DON'T like Jen. We don't need characters who are simply icons, and nothing more. We need characters who feel human, whom we can relate to. If you don't like the character, you won't like the story they're in. We don't need stories that hammer in the message, because that's when people roll their eyes. We need stories that have us analyze and think critically without even trying. If you outright say "hey we know our writing is bad" in your finale, that doesn't fix the problem, it just highlights the fact that yeah, your writing wasn't good.
Phase 4 was meh, the writers don’t really like representation because if they did they would try harder this was way too bare minimum I blame girlbossing.
The problem I when i watched the first episode is there's no journey. She already knows how to control it and is somehow stronger. Also the lawyer aspect was never ironed out so we know nothing about the case.
@@ShadowSonic2 that’s not the same thing because he was already a trained assassin before getting adamantium injections. So he was there wasn’t as much of a learning curve. However she was great as the hulk without no training before hand

@@scottbuckley823 The Hulk's powers are, every other Gamma Mutants' isn't. The emotion stuff is his baggage and only his. You're just excusing Deadpool's deficiencies.
Glad to see a more nuanced take on the show weighing its pros and cons as opposed to just calling it the worst thing ever or praising the hell out of it for it being another MCU product.
On the contrary, I find it pretty damn disappointing he couldn't finish it, when I had a great time with it up until the ending, which I'm still not sure how I feel about.
@@emmastarr5242 I’d honestly just be happy he reviewed it at all. Most people, myself included, would like say not to even waste the time watching it. This also ignores the devolution of the Marvel formula that worked before now into a cluster fluff of does it work or not.
Yeah it’s kinda like Big Red for me: I wasn’t a fan, but not because of the reasons that everyone’s screaming about online. Seems like Doug has a similar take
but it is the worst, the story is bad (and on purpose bad), the characters a carboards of human being (and on purpose), it destroys the mcu world building, cgi is bad, and the jokes are bad like did you seriously had a laugh when the show was just dick ridding Meagan the Stallion or when SheHulk made fun of Daredevil for being blind? Like no there are things that are just all around bad, this video is just fence sitting.
Here's the thing: the bits you mentioned liking? Her working as a superhero lawyer, handling superhero cases, even just the thing about her getting drunk as She-Hulk but it only affecting her as Jen? That is all completely, totally, no word of a lie, lifted SCENE-FOR-SCENE from the comics, specifically a 12-issue series from 2005 nicknamed 'Single Green Female'. It's easily one of the best She-Hulk comic stories out there, and I'm not exaggerating when I say that maybe 80-90% of this show was lifted from those comics. The scene of her getting drunk happens in literally the very first issue, that's how heavily this show was based on those specific comics. The bad stuff, like the constant unfunny jokes, the random 4th wall breaking that makes no sense, Jen's childish personality despite her being a veteran lawyer? All added for the show. THIS is why people hated the show so much, not because they hate She-Hulk or hate women or whatever people claim... it's because it took one of the best She-Hulk comics (who was already one of the best female comic characters in general), copy-pasted most of it into the show, then added their own touches that made it worse. As in: imagine the only Batman movie you had was 'Batman & Robin', and everyone you knew walked around thinking that Mr Freeze did nothing but spew ice-puns and that Robin did nothing but whine and complain. THAT'S why people are so pissed off about the She-Hulk series, it was a chance to really share a great character with a lot of people, and it was botched from day one, and with the MCU being as huge and as popular as it is, this is now what people think She-Hulk is, when it isn't.
This, 100% this. What made it so bad isn't so much that they did a bad job with the show; Marvel's made mistakes before. What made _She-Hulk_ truly terrible was simply the way anyone familiar with the source material understood that _it could easily have been soooo much better!_
@@ShadowSonic2 I swear, people who excuse the terrible writing of the She-Hulk show with, “it’s accurate to the comics,” have never actually read a She-Hulk comic. The good She-Hulk comics, like the Jon Byrne run, still knew when to pull back the humor to let the story breathe. Stop getting your character trivia from TH-cam shorts and actually educate yourselves on the source material you claim to be a fan of.
I'm a woman and I was SOOO disappointed with this show. I have been waiting for She-Hulk to enter the MCU for such a long time, and every week I tuned in hoping it would get better, just to be more and more disappointed when the credits rolled by 🤦🏽♀️ P.S. I actually really liked Tatyana as the main lead, hated the writing. P.P.S. the only episodes that were salvageable were the ones with DareDevil in them, at least she got to work off of another Hero. And that's kind of why I'm excited to see her in a team up movie or show up in someone else's show, then maybe they will write her better 🤷🏽♀️
Here’s what I have to say about you not finishing the show: That information coming from a critic is infinitely more valuable than anything else you could have said. When it’s your *job* to watch stuff and review it, but even this was too much, that says a lot. I’m a children’s librarian and while there is no way for me to read every single kids book ever published so I can honestly give kids reading recommendations, I do try to read as many as I can. And there are plenty that I get through ~50 pages and I cannot do one more word because it’s so bad. I don’t have the time to waste slogging through something that I hate. I will simply not recommend it, and I might mention that I tried it, but couldn’t finish it. That might not be exactly what’s going on here, but don’t apologize for not finishing a show or movie you hated. Even if it’s for a review. Like I said, that’s valuable information too.
It's also valuable to know whether or not you finished something because of how it reads IMO. Although the destination might be worth it, do you really want to dedicate 10 hours going through a painful slog?
Except Doug never said that he hated this show. There were a lot of shows in the 20th century that were mostly filler, and people didn't feel like watching every episode even if they liked the concept. That's the way I feel about the '87 TMNT.
@@jp3813 Same with Ms. Marvel. Hated, HATED the first episode, I didn't bother finishing it. Disgusting, specially if your read the comics. It was two steps away from saying Malibu's Stacy "Don't ask me, I'm just a girl" in the Simpsons. At least She-Hulk was surreal and intriguing.
On the Tenth Disneycember my Critic gave to me: Ten Awkward Cases, Nine Possum Jokes, Eight Glitchy Jedi, Seven Bad Remakes, Six Decent Burgers, Five HORRIFIC DEATHS, Four Best Friends, Three Leaping Frogs, Two Quiet Moments, And a Spider Flying Round the City!
Good on Doug to respect those who do like it. You can dislike or hate the show all you want but don't be a jackass and demean others just because you want to feel proud of yourself.
As much as I'm sure there are people who genuinely like I feel like a lot of the more vocal defenders are just doing it because Disney managed to make like something or not a political statement that are more than happy to remind everyone of
I think Doug is just kind of afraid of them to be honest. He's always been one to avoid potential backlash to an extreme degree. A while back there was an incident where he made fun of Mako Iwamatsu's voice and then back peddled for literally years after trying to get fans to forgive him.
On the 10th day of disneycember the critic gave for me: 10 broken walls 9 extinct species 8 lightsaber customs 7 CG horseshits 6 untasty burgers FIVE MULTIVERSES 4 red pandas 3 talking frogs 2 ice craking nuts and an amazing superhero game for me
Your one of the few Internet reviewers who it's better when you're late to something because after being overwhelmed by everyone's opinion of something you always give a calm objective assessment.
That's why even with the Channel Awesome controversies I still like Doug more than other reviewers. He makes the other reviewers look unreasonable and is more nuanced in his reviews (especially as of late).
This is the most balanced take on this show I've seen, so thank you for that! And I agree with everything you've said. This show desperately needed better, funnier writing. It would've helped if they hired people who did comedy legal shows like Boston Legal. And the comparison to Marvelous Mrs. Maisel was so on point. Something for the show makers to think about for S2.
It was also really cool when the pigs flew around my house and fire began shooting from toilets all over the world Since we’re just saying things that never happened.
2:44-3:04 Yeah that is a pretty creative setup. Incidentally it kinda reminds me of the scene in The Incredibles where Mr Incredible is forced to listen to his boss and despite having superpowers, he's powerless to save a person getting mugged outside because his boss will fire him if he leaves. Not exactly the same but you can see the parallels.
The biggest problem with this show is that She-Hulk is just a terrible lawyer. I'm not an expert on law by any means, but even I was dumbfounded by some of the choices she made (especially in episodes four and eight). Also, is it just me, or did they forget to explain how she's allowed to be She-Hulk again? I know they caught the criminal who released the sex tape, but if police catch the guy who robbed my house I don't think that gets me off the hook for torching my neighbors garden in blind rage.
@@Raximus3000 that's the worse part they could have easily said a joke about how catching hulk king didn't magically let her be she-hulk again but no... she got a full deus ex machina

Doug brings up my biggest gripe with this show: There is no sense of consistency in this show Like, I really hope this isn’t how Jen continues to be since she is quite a legacy Avenger Honestly, this is just the show that needs a new crew of people for the next season
They need writers who can actually write the show that they wanted to make. The fact that they changed the intent and direction of the show instead of hiring competent writers baffles me to no end.
That’s the main issue with this show: the writing. However, the cast did a really good job working with what they had, especially Tatiana Maslany as Jennifer. For a lot of people, they were excited for the show for Tatiana the same a lot of people were excited for Moon Knight because of Oscar Isaac.
@@imjango1052 not to mention writers who can take criticism or hate. It feels like they rather troll and be like “see how we’re focusing on the hate? We’re laughing at it because we clearly don’t care at all!”
I felt if they really wanted to show an impactful struggle for her, maybe have her neglected growing up so she had to learn everything by herself. So when she becomes She-Hulk, she wants to handle it herself. She can still have consciousness when she turns, but she can’t control when or how she turns. She’s been on her own most of her life so it’s hard to rely on her cousin. And instead of having her graduated, maybe have her entering law school or in her final two years of law school. She wants to be a serious lawyer and live a normal life, but her new powers keep interfering. But it feels the show would rather make fun of the people who don’t like the show or it’s humor.
This is the same issue I had with Thor 4: no one takes anything seriously. Even when something 'serious' happens, they're too busy making jokes to give it the proper weight needed to make me care when bad stuff DOES happen. I don't mind characters being upbeat and cheerful, but at some point, it starts to feel condescending. I know the argument is made that this is supposed to be 'for kids', but there's a reason I remember 'Arthur' far more than I remember 'Barney'. Even as a kid, I think I'd have gotten bored with all the jokes.
Honestly I feel like this is a more fair review of the show than most. I liked it but I understand it had problems. I'm glad you are more understanding with it.
@@matityaloran9157 yeah.... especially jen "this is what you want?" snark at the audience I just thought at the moment "No. What I expected was something more like seinfeld's series finale of you on trial" THE WORST PART was Jen basically forcing KEVIN, to completely undo the supposed ongoing plot of her season 1 just to gie her a deus ex machina (especiallyhow suddenly, she can be she hulk again.... even though that had nothing to do with hulk king being arrested. that was still jen's fault for losing temper). AT LEAST they could have change it so the serum doesn't work, hulk king gets turned into a horrible blob that can barely move and is begging for his own death. AND Jen sure, gets her job back due to "catching hulk king" but when she ask if she can be she hulk again, she is told "NO. you can't transform into she hulk. that's what your parole. that had nothing to do with hulkking. you would have to look for a change in your parole at court" (the season 2 hook). ESPECIALLY if her own best friend happily says "just like you wanted. You never have to be she hulk ever again". Cue jen looking sad at the viewer, panning out to reveal KEVIN watching, and saying "Just like you wanted Ms. Walters. Just a series about lawyers without superpowers" So it doesn't feel like a simple deus ex machina jen can do anytime and is still funny
There is a big difference between what makes a writer's room laugh and what makes an audience laugh and this very much needed someone outside that group giving them feedback. What I wanted was Boston Legal with Superpowers. I wanted a zany environment mixed with serious courtroom moments. What I got was a show that thought pointing out things was the same as being funny. I really wanted this to be good.
The problem is that they did intend for the show to be a Harvey Birdman type show, but the writers had no idea how to write courtroom scenes. This forced them to change the intent of the show. That's not a theory, the writers admitted to this in an interview. But that begs the question: why didn't they hire competent writers? If you know for a fact that the writers can't give you what you want, why keep them on?
@@JdeMolay No it was because of Chapek maybe do the research, he wanted Feige to pump out as much disney plus content as possible to try and get subscribers. I think the writers were very lazy and self-righteous. They should have worked harder to make not only a funny show, but also understood the universe they are working in.
I walked out on an exorcism movie once. Someone told me i could have gotten a refund, i was like "nah, that's not fair. They worked hard to make it, i just didn't like it."
God, I WISH this could have been good. I actually really like She-Hulk, a female embodiment of strength who isn't afraid to show she isn't as stereotypically feminine as other female superheroes, but they fucking obliterate any and all good will with this one season.
The one thing that really made me hate the show was how she Hulk was written. She was such a narcissist with almost no redeemable qualities. Someone like Tony Stark is a narcissist but that is clearly within the context of the movie a flaw, and he has so many redeemable qualities in addition to that one flaw. On the other hand she has no redeemable qualities and her flaws are written like they're supposed to be good qualities. That's the part that I hate it
I was picking up on that too. My theory was she was trapped in a Wanda/Vision scenario that forced people to live in this warped reality. Then episode 8 her and Daredevil act like real people, breaking her out of the simulation, but no. They just had a better writer for the episode.
@@dennydude I think you're right but in a far more meta way. I think that it's the writers who try to trap the audience in a one division-esque scenario where we got to see the world through the writer's warped reality

I don't think the show is salvageable. Not because the concept is flawed inherently, but because it is hard to write a compelling show centered around legal stuff when you openly admit you don't know anything about legal stuff.
This is the silliest take I've ever heard. "It's not that bad. I can't finish it because it's so bad, but it's not that bad?" What does that even mean? Those statements contradicts each other. If you can't finish a meal because you rather eat a better meal; it's a BAD meal. If you can't finish a show because you rather watch any other show; it' a BAD show. Full stop, end of.
There is a good show somewhere in She-Hulk, but they need to do two things to fix it. 1.) Fire everyone who wrote the first season. This has nothing to do with just how bad the writing was, rather this group of people doesn't know how to write for anyone. I heard reports that this was supposed to be more kid oriented, but with all the drinking and sex, there is no way. Then I heard it was directed more for a female audience, but Jen is like the worst example of a strong female lead I can think of. She's a hulk that is constantly looking for validation. It makes no sense. Oh, and those 4th wall breaks where she basically turns towards the camera and tells you everything that just happened like you didn't just watch it, felt like the writers were talking down to the audience. They weren't smart or funny, they were literally insulting the viewers. So, with that. 2. Actually read the comics. It was rather obvious that this show was made with little use of the comics. The way I described it is, it feels like the writers had a morning meeting with one person who read some of the comics, and then were told to make a show based on what they discussed in the meeting. Jen is a very intelligent woman in the comics, but in the show, she can't even make a simple decision without the help of someone else. I mean, she's a she-hulk, and she can't even stand up for herself in the show. And don't get me started on how everyone in the show is written like a moron. This is where people start to say that I just don't like how the men in the show are written, so that must be why I didn't like it, but the women are just as dumb as the men. Every character is written like they have the problem-solving skills of a 6-year-old. I just don't get it. There is a good show somewhere in She-Hulk, but it was written so poorly and with none of the personality of the comics, they need a whole new writing team to fix it. And I just don't see Disney doing that.
I thought this show was a 6 or 6.5. Generally liked it and thought it was ridiculous how much hate it inspired but didn't think it was worthy of that much praise. Just a relatively decent Marvel show for me.
Matt would never been seen in broad daylight with the suit on, and he would never get his suit made from some high profile fashionista, and he would never sleep with She-Hulk after his experiences with Elektra, Claire, and Karen (especially how Season 3 ends, it implies a rekindling of his relationship with Karen). This broke my heart to see. Daredevil isn’t interested in fame or fortune, his original suit was combat gear he bought online, and his second iteration was from a craftsman under the boot of Wilson Fisk who he mutually helped by creating the suit so he could take down Kingpin. He wouldn’t be seen as Matt Murdock, purchasing a suit from this goon. The moment the helmet was revealed in that environment my heart sank. The nail in the coffin was the writers not being able to keep it in their pants and having him sleep with Jen after one single day. He did that in his college years with Elektra, but he was young and stupid, and also… it was Elektra. He’s gained so much perspective and it’s shown in the episode where Karen invites him in after their date, and he refuses, explaining how the day had been perfect, and going with her would cause him to mess it up. That’s a severe level of emotional maturity, and it was not displayed in his depiction in She-Hulk. The one scene I enjoyed was Matt and Jen bantering at the bar, it was the best scene in the show, and the status quo in any single episode of Daredevil. If you want me to believe their relationship, then do the legwork and make me believe it. But as it stands, the ONLY thing Matt and Jen have in common is that they’re lawyers, and for Jen, even that’s debatable. All they had to do was a cameo, and somehow they managed to mess it up. The only praise I can give is to Daredevil’s writing in the episode, he spoke like himself, and Charlie is a true professional, and he did the best with what he had. The only way to get me excited for Born Again is if the original writers and directors and stunt coordinators from Daredevil come back to create it. Disney’s been throwing these meaningful projects to novices like Candy at a parade. I bet you they’ll try to carve out Matt’s religious angle as well, and next thing you know he’ll be killing, and he’ll just be Punisher without guns. You can’t just “have Daredevil.” You need to do your homework and do it right. He’s a nuanced character, and simplifying him is the biggest crime to come out of She-Hulk.
@AJraxUltima I’m not saying it’s not plausible, and I’m not saying they’ve broken canon, I’m just saying from a character perspective, he’s always very protective of his identity, and I don’t think he’d go to a high profile fashion designer. He’s not a vain man. He dawns the devil suit because it’s the name that was given to him, he embraced the role, but he didn’t choose it. Going to a fashion designer, albeit with resources and tech to make the suit block bullets and knives and stuff, just doesn’t sit right with me. And you’re right, nothing was confirmed after season 3 regarding Karen, and Matt was not good for her, despite his best efforts he hurts the people around him, which is why in season 3 he realizes that’s no way to live, and he, Foggy and Karen all grow closer because of it. I’m not opposed to a relationship between him and Jen, but they rushed it and it feels like the character has been violated. They didn’t make me believe that he’d do that. After his life experience, he seemed more guarded with his heart by the end of season 2. But calling the fashion designer from she hulk a deep character is laughable at best, the show is filled with unrelatable caricatures to the point where when they interact with a real one in Matt Murdock, it drags him down to their level.
The thing about the show is that while it has quite a few good moments, it is average at best. There is just so much potential for the show to be even better, like getting writers who actually know how to write court dramas and court sitcoms. Also take full advantage of the fact that She-Hulk is a lawyer dealing with the law and the implications of living in a world that is filled with superhumans, aliens, etc; ask the questions of how does the justice system evolve to incorporate those things, expose corruption, Jen fully coming to terms with who she really is. Maybe a little less of the fourth wall breaks, I mean yes she did that a lot in the early comics, especially when it came to dealing with things that she was inconvenienced with or the writers double standards. Like the infamous time where she berated the writers and the audience when the writer made her jump rope completely naked, or the time where she had to get somewhere so she just walked past the panels to the location. At the rate of the 4th wall breaks in the show as it is however, it was like you are just waiting for Deadpool to knock on her door and challenge her in a court of law because he accused her of stealing his schtick of 4th wall breaks.
I think it’s obvious from her complete lack of professionalism and court room ability, that it just proves they greenlit her law school admission and graduation because her cousin brought everyone back from the Blip and helped saved the universe. You don’t tell the frickin Hulk’s blood relative that she’s not a suitable law school applicant! Lol

"I'm not going to say you're part of the problem or whatever buzzword will be dated by next year." Yeah, because the show ALREADY does that all the time, hence why you were justified in Gene Siskeling this.
What I love about the show is it knows exactly who their pissing off and how to piss them off even more So I’m not surprised that this show got a lot of hate. ALOT of people already made the decision to hate this show before they ever saw it, and nothing less than a masterpiece could have changed that (which this show isn’t)

Not sure how showing a bad movie, a bad Disney plus series and just one good movie that came out 2 years ago is proof that Disney Marvel is going to be okay
The things you like about the show are because the character She-Hulk is great. But the things you don't like about the show are because the writers didn't care for her and had absolutely no idea what to write so they just hounded everyone for cameos. True Story, straight from the source.
@@ShadowSonic2 I’d be cringe too, why do people keep using this “example” when I’m pretty sure anyone who has expressed disliking that scene has never said “But if Deadpool did it” hell, her twerking scene would be fine if she was at a club or something, Jen gets down in the comics from time to time, but for it to come out of nowhere in her office made it weird. I also just thinking twerking of one of the least appealing dances ever, but that goes for everybody.
As someone who actually really loved this show, it's wonderful to hear a review from someone who didn't like it not tear it down as the death of all decency that only idiots enjoy, there has been an exhausting amount of that. This is how to do a constructive review of a thing you don't like and I respect it.
I can't believe you did that. You talked about the scene where her boss forced her to take a client, despite her being a Hulk that could "break this guy in two", then tried to make it about "females in the workplace". Are you kidding me right now? She had to sit there and take it because she didn't want to lose the job. That had ZERO to do with her being a woman and EVERYTHING to do with not wanting to lose her job. A man in the same position would have been just as stuck. Stop saying stupid things.
I remember reading/hearing somewhere that the writers said it was hard to write a lawyer show. So either that makes them incredibly lazy, or Better Call Saul is one of the best shows ever…or both!
I'm glad you touched on the character depiction, most reviews I've seen focus on the writing as a whole but the character disappointed me most. Marvel has come out with a new SheHulk comic series that is really worth checking out. I think she's an interesting character because she's shown as being able to project confidence and seems to genuinely be comfortable in her own skin but is also nervous at the beginning because she questions her capabilities as a lawyer, feeling like her time as She Hulk might have set her back. In the show she just felt either bitter or overconfident and never seemed to like taking responsibility for her part in things.
On the 10th day of disneycember the nostalgia critic gave to me 10 hulks at law 9 Ice Ages melting 8 glitchy souls likes 7 soulless puppets 6 ok burgers 5 mad multiverses 4 generational traumas 3 frogs adventuring 2 ice ages starting and Spider-Man swinging on a pear tree
Doug, you were so right about the way the character should be: a real lawyer. And for the main character to take things seriously when needed, not just be a joke fest.
The part where She-Hulk is forced to take on a case from her boss ISN'T all that "clever". Yes, many women in the workplace can probably relate to something like that, but so can many MEN...and that's something that has been done in shows and movies for well over half a century!
This show got "one" big laugh out of me. The scene where Mr Immortal gets up and jumps out the window when the two women start berating him. It's well timed and worked. I wish the rest of the show had comedy like that.
The Harvey Birdman comparisons didn't even occur to me but yeah, making Jennifer more of a straight-man to all the bonkers comic book stuff around her probably would've done the humor a lot of favors.
One thing I just couldn’t take in this show were the supporting characters. Not the MCU cameos. But Jen’s friends and people she comes across through her job. Without a shadow of a doubt the most instantly forgettable supporting cast in the MCU. Didn’t find any of them funny or remotely memorable. Genuinely could not tell you a single one of their names. They all felt painfully pointless.
I love that I can trust Doug to acknowledge the good in otherwise bad media. To me, that’s the mark of great criticism. If you can’t find _anything_ good in something, you’re probably not being objective!
She-Hulk is a ridiculously fun character in the comics, but the writers were so dead focused on mocking the """trolls""" - which is their term for "people who say negative things about me" - that they didn't bother to write a good show or character.
You can’t imagine how much I appreciate this review. While others exaggerate about how awful this show is, there’s Doug Walker who has a professional and honest review. He acknowledges that while there’s plenty of bad things, he also points out the good things.
Doug is not really into honest reviews, he's into middle of the road opinions to avoid any kind of fanboys harassing him. Which is intelligent in it's own, nobody wants to deal with mentally unstable Marvel fanboys who will consume any product with their brand on it and defend it like rabid mongrels.
What I hate is I was genuinely exicted about seeing live action she hulk. I wasn't expecting anything other than a fun comedy about lawyers, not to the level of birdman attorney at law but in the same spirit of it. Instead we got a show that claims it was intentionally bad? Like come on she hulk is a beloved character and Instead we got a new low. Like shit I don't like anything about captain marvel in comics or movies but at the very least I can see what they were going for.
I feel like it pulled off everything it went for. There are plenty of good moments for lawyer Jen .she felt very competent and skilled. She literally got Abomination out of jail. I feel like the 4th wall breaking could be improved but the ending made up for it

Interesting take on The Marvellous Mrs Maisel, I always thought the 50’s values were just in the background but “a 50’s Sitcom and reality fighting for screen time” that’s a weird, but cool way to look at it. For the record 50’s values were pretty on display in the third season finale, though it was all from her point of view. It would have hit much harder if it had been from Shy and Reggie’s point of view.
My brother pointed out they should have made this more like Harvey Birdman and we started talking about how they could have used this to show other smaller heroes and villains getting in trouble or trying to defend someone who's misunderstood, especially if they were desperate for a comedic take with the law. But then again they never once even played with the idea of hiring or even talking to ONE lawyer to help them know more about the law is very concerning
We despise a woman mocking her own cousin and being god awful, the writers mocking us "trolls" and them not understanding how to write scenarios in courtroom right, you may think all this is fine and the 4th Wall Breaks clever but we can't accept this.
Hehehe... "season 2". That's adorable, Doug. Between the majority of critics/fans 'booing' the show and the writers passively insulting the audience via 'jokes' and interviews, I have my doubts a second season will be greenlit.
Unlike DC Feige isn't reactionary so don't get your hopes up, if there's a problem he'll do his best to please people who had a problem with it even you. Not that you deserve that sympathy.
@@Phanthief95 things, like him walking around in broad daylight with the suit on for a cheap joke. It puts the people he loves in danger. People talk, maybe someone says “hey I saw Daredevil leaving Jen’s house, who was she with last night? Oh she was with Murdock at the bar? Interesting… he would never risk something like that. The writers clearly wanted to make this happen for a visual gag. Also ordering his suit from a big name fashion designer is not his MO. Again, he keeps a low profile, he wouldn’t go to some big-wig, he’d keep it a closed arrangement, with very few eyes involved. Also he had a one night stand with Jen, after meeting her hours ago, and the only thing they have in common is that they’re lawyers. It’s just a bastardization of the romances from the main series, which are handled tactfully and with nuance. At this point in his life after all he’s been through, I don’t think he’d be so reckless. The writing was solid, and he spoke like himself, but his actions were that of a different person. It’s hard to explain, but I’ve seen Daredevil three times over, and Defenders twice over, and these things clashed with what I know. I recognize he slept with Elektra on a whim, but he was young, and in college, and Elektra was “the one.” She understood him like no other. Jen and him, I just didn’t buy. I liked the scene of he and Jen talking at the bar, it was the best scene in the entire show in my opinion, because Matt was working his charm, Jen was clearly buying what he was selling, but they should’ve left it at that, and if they wanted to do a romance between them, they needed to build it up and make me believe it. But they rushed it. They just made it happen to make it happen. It doesn’t deepen the characters, it doesn’t serve as any growth for Jen, it’s just a thing that happened, which makes me question why it was included.

Maybe they need to bring on Amy Sherman Palladino as a writer?
U forgot the part where it treats every male in the show as misogynistic and idiotic
They definitely got the wrong writers. They admitted in a lawyer show that they had no idea how to write courtroom scenes.
@@annienunyabiz6627 They never actually said that. They said they just didn't want to drag the court stories on and on.

@@ShadowSonic2 Why
In the comics, Jen felt she was too ordinary, too normal and loved becoming She-Hulk. The show should have been about people trying to take that from her.
This. Jen likes She Hulk. People close to her prefer Jen. Her story is about a woman growing into herself and becoming more of who she wants to be and naturally getting backlash from people who prefer the "old Jen" whether they have good intentions or not. The most important part of this is that Jen likes She Hulk more than anyone else on the planet and it's arguably the single most important part of her character. It's what makes her immediately different from her cousin.
Irónically, the show was the complete OPPOSITE of that
@@ianr.navahuber2195 And as someone who has read her runs from Savage to the latest ongoing rainbow Rowell and as someone who thinks the show is fine I find Jen is profoundly mishandled as a result. She is the legit direct opposite and it's not done in a clever deliberate way. It's done in a way that suggests this is how the show wants us to actually perceive She Hulk and people act like it's 1:1 with the comics
@@rikudoubapeck to some degree I GET why they did that (to show more tatiana as jen, and not rely that much on CGI to have her as She Hulk all the show), BUT ON THE OTHER HAND it seems just .... dumb
I get they also try to do the "jen has to now accept she hulk as part of who she is" but they just do it so randomly and rushed it gives whiplash
in the 7th episode she was still in the mindset of "feeling eclipsed by her she hulk form, and wanting to feel accepted as jen" but suddenly by episode 8's end they want to convince us she now accepts her she hulk form... and i am like "did we skipped an episode?"
Didn’t they try to with the character assassination thing? Didn’t she get a cease and desist from Titania to literally stop being She Hulk?

@@ShadowSonic2 Yes they did. They quite literally said that the first episode was supposed to be a multi parter about the trial of Abomination but they had to drop that idea because they sucked at writing court drama, FOR A LAWYER.
Overall, the show's biggest problem was that rather than make a good show, the showrunners wanted to troll the very people they predicted would be triggered by the series. They wanted to be button-pushers.

Never wise to mock the audience.

Marvel Phase 4 has its really high highs, and REALLY low lows. This, is a really low low. And there's one major reason why. I'll let Theo from Haunting of Hill House explain it best "People f*** up. I guess you don’t get that, you don’t really get it until you f*** up. REALLY f*** up."
Don't put characters on a pedestal.
Are you going to whine "AGENDA" and "MESSAGE" anytime you see a woman or nonwhite in anything?

@@shootout-shinobi6672 None of that sentence made any sense
The 4th Wall Breaking is from the John Byrne comics.

But unlike The Incredibles, which I felt was done on purpose, that good setup was probably done by accident.
Doug brings up my biggest gripe with this show: There is no sense of consistency in this show
Like, I really hope this isn’t how Jen continues to be since she is quite a legacy Avenger
Honestly, this is just the show that needs a new crew of people for the next season
they should just remake the whole show with new crew of people
They need writers who can actually write the show that they wanted to make.
Ha! "next season" not with those ratings
@@imjango1052 not to mention writers who can take criticism or hate. It feels like they rather troll and be like “see how we’re focusing on the hate? We’re laughing at it because we clearly don’t care at all!”
Man, Doug pretty much summed up my thoughts of the show while giving some good pointers I have never thought about
Fantastic job, man
I felt if they really wanted to show an impactful struggle for her, maybe have her neglected growing up so she had to learn everything by herself.
I liked the show before the finale which I found ruined it for me
@@matityaloran9157 yeah....
especially jen "this is what you want?" snark at the audience
I just thought at the moment "No. What I expected was something more like seinfeld's series finale of you on trial"
THE WORST PART was Jen basically forcing KEVIN, to completely undo the supposed ongoing plot of her season 1 just to gie her a deus ex machina (especiallyhow suddenly, she can be she hulk again.... even though that had nothing to do with hulk king being arrested. that was still jen's fault for losing temper).
Walters. Just a series about lawyers without superpowers"
So it doesn't feel like a simple deus ex machina jen can do anytime and is still funny
@@ianr.navahuber2195 That would have been great.
Because they don't care. Throw in some cameos and slap the Marvel label on it, rinse, repeat... It's the entertainment factory line.

I thought this was okay but thank you for giving your honest opinion about it it did make my Saturday morning feel a lot better ❤️
Jen- Everyday, incompetent males explain my field of expertise to me.

I don't think the show is salvageable. Not because the concept is flawed inherently, but because it is hard to write a compelling show centered around legal stuff when you openly admit you don't know anything about legal stuff.
This is the silliest take I've ever heard.
"It's not that bad. I can't finish it because it's so bad, but it's not that bad?"
What does that even mean? Those statements contradicts each other. If you can't finish a meal because you rather eat a better meal; it's a BAD meal. If you can't finish a show because you rather watch any other show; it' a BAD show. Full stop, end of.
This was Marvel stooping down to modern CW levels of quality. This show was incredibly cringeworthy and horrendously written.
That’s higher than the score I gave it
4/10
Truly wish this show didn’t exist. It was the last push over the edge for many general audiences.
Lol

This show helped me to convince my sister in law to watch Daredevil series.
My favorite part of watching the whole thing was drunkenly laughing at my friends groaning at it
Grizzo:hopping for doug to talk about "oswald the lucky rabbit" in this Disneycember considering he just got his first short in 95 years
On the 10th day of disneycember the nostalgia critic gave to me
10 hulks at law
9 Ice Ages melting
8 glitchy souls likes
7 soulless puppets
6 ok burgers
5 mad multiverses
4 generational traumas
3 frogs adventuring
2 ice ages starting
and Spider-Man swinging on a pear tree
And one big fat spam comment that 30+ bots have already posted.
@@Rammstein0963. nope I’m not a bot
I made this version myself and have been updating it daily since the start of Disneycember for fun
@@Rammstein0963. sorry to spoil the bot hysteria
I enjoyed it, I hope we get a second season and they trim it up. Improve what works.
People online confusing "disinterest" with "hate" is why journalism is dead.
This show got "one" big laugh out of me. The scene where Mr Immortal gets up and jumps out the window when the two women start berating him. It's well timed and worked. I wish the rest of the show had comedy like that.
the show would have sometimes benefitted of being a little more mean spirited butin a balanced way
The Harvey Birdman comparisons didn't even occur to me but yeah, making Jennifer more of a straight-man to all the bonkers comic book stuff around her probably would've done the humor a lot of favors.
I think both sides have their honest reviews
Doug is not really into honest reviews, he's into middle of the road opinions to avoid any kind of fanboys harassing him.
Which is intelligent in it's own, nobody wants to deal with mentally unstable Marvel fanboys who will consume any product with their brand on it and defend it like rabid mongrels.
Honestly, I feel like Jennifer’s extent of professional law experience is probably… playing about ten hours of Ace Attorney
that's giving jen too much credit
Never thought I’d hear Doug Walker says the words “twerking with Meghan Thee Stallion” but here we are
What I hate is I was genuinely exicted about seeing live action she hulk.
She-Hulk is what every nightmare that everyone on this Earth ever had... fused into one... cloned itself... fucked the Clone and made She-Hulk!
I feel like it pulled off everything it went for. There are plenty of good moments for lawyer Jen .she felt very competent and skilled. She literally got Abomination out of jail. I feel like the 4th wall breaking could be improved but the ending made up for it
On the tenth day of disneycember, the critic gave to me
The worst MCU show
A...kinda better sequel
Some really glitchy gameplay
Another wooden remake
Cheaply made hamburgers
3 multiverses
A huge talking panda
Frogs on adventures
A mammoth shitty movie
And a game where a guy shoots silly string
Jen: "So, I'm an expert at controlling my anger because I do it infinitely more than you!"
Bruce: "She don't know me vewwy well, do she?"
Sounds like he way to fix the show is to play it at 1.5 speed.
On the tenth day of Disneycember, The Critic gave to me:
Ten Hulking Lawyers
Nine Obnoxious Opossums
Eight Imperial Inquisitors
Seven Lifeless Puppets
Six Murder Mysteries
FIVE MULTIVERSES !!!
Four Psycho Moms
Three Frog Friends
Two Woolly Mammoths
And the Amazing Spider-MAN !
I actually liked it. It was funny enough and people have taken it way too serious when it's almost parody.
Exactly what I said
Unlike DC Feige isn't reactionary so don't get your hopes up, if there's a problem he'll do his best to please people who had a problem with it even you. Not that you deserve that sympathy.
As a Daredevil fan, this upset me. Charlie deserves better.
well it's not over for him, they are making a new daredevil series
Why? He’s the same character he is from the Netflix series.
@@Riverfilly153 That's how he acts in the comics, though.
@@ShadowSonic2 that’s not how the Charlie Cox version acts, and that’s the one they’re doing.
