Greg Wiseman who was the co-creator of Spectacular Spider-Man and also created Young Justice has said that if they had moved ahead with a third season they would have introduced Scorpion, Hydro-Man, The Hobgoblin, the return of Edie Brock and the Symbiote, the introduction of Cletus Cassidy and Carnage, a plot line with Dr. Connors trying to cure Electro, expanding on the conflict between Black Cat and Spider-Man, the Osborn family having more development along with Kraven and Calypso, believe it or not even introducing Morbius, exploring the the shared past of Tombstone and Robbie Robertson and further development with Peter and Gwen's relationship. So glad Doug enjoyed this as I knew he probably would 😎. I think it's good he's finally going over and enjoying a lot more animated shows from the late 90s and early 2000s that he kind of missed out on. Also, neat that you referenced Greg Wiseman's shows always getting cancelled as I've been thinking the same thing 😂 😂.
1:29 I actually enjoy him seeing him at high school cause it’s a coming of age story and we see how much he still doesn’t know. But I do want to see more of what he’s like in college
Spectacular still holds the honour of having my favourite Spider-Man TV opening of all time. Easily one of my favourite Spiderman properties. Also (Spoilers for Across the Spiderverse): Having Josh Keaton reprise his role as Spectacular in that movie made me super happy to say the least.
Your description of the whole Venom thing accurately described my feelings. Eddie Brock was such a nice and friendlly guy early on in this show, his descent into becoming Venom was genuinely heartbreaking to me and helped make it creepier.
You know you're obsessed with this show when you can HEAR the dialogue while Doug is doing his own voice over. I have a problem (and that problem is too much Spectacular Spider-Man lmao)
Something I love is that every character shows up one or two episodes before their proper introduction giving us a taste of who they are/showing that they exist even when they are not the focus. Even Blackcat has a nice cameo in the Halloween episode using the party to hide in plain sight with a sack of stolen goods.
Same here, instead of stopping things to focus on a villain/their backstory they set them up and pay it off later for either more emotional impact or to connect with more major villains. Like I love how tombstone and Norman create supervillains in order to distract Spider-Man from the organized crime world but at the same time use it for characters like rhino, sand man and shocker, characters who don’t have major focus in Spider-Man story arcs so having them be thugs turned supervillains by others works (plus for rhino and sandman that still reflects their origins just in a tweaked way so it doesn’t just use them in name only)
One of the best. The writing in this show was better than it had any right to be. Honestly, I'm not a huge fan of most of the post 90's cartoon but this one nails it.
Despite the fact that I've become Spider-Man's fan thanks to TAS spider-man 1994 I have to say this show is the best one among the others. It stays really close to original material and still doing own thing. That is really impressive. It's a tragic that we won't see another season. I really would love that
Yep, this show is amazing, easily my favorite of all Spider-Man shows, and just Spider-Man media in general honestly. The characters, animation, writing, and stories, this show just understands the character perfectly.
This really was a fantastic show. They really understand the relationships and dynamics of each character, but still made something with its own identity too.
As far as I know, this was the first adaptation to actually have Spider-man in high school. Before this, he was always in college. In the 60's show and the 90's show he was in the college. In the Raimi movie he's only in high school for the origin bit, but he graduates before he even actually becomes Spider-man. So at the time, it was nice to actually see an adaptation that actually matched Stan Lee's original vision of a teenage superhero.
I love this show. I didn't grow up with it and I only watched it last year, but it's amazing. This version of Peter is amazing, the villains are solid, the side characters are done really well, especially the love interests, who are much more compelling than in some of the movies, and J Jonah Jameson, who's just really funny. The animation is solid and the action is really well done. It's a fantastic adaptation of Spider-Man that captures the energy the character and the world he exists in perfectly. I would've loved to see more of this show.
the choice of background music is top tier. It's used as the opening title for the french show Vilebrequin which is awesome so I was so full of joy when it started in this video.
I watched this show in preparation for Across the Spider-Verse, and I'm glad I did. Especially since I was able to recognize his cameo in the film. I would like it if we got a season or two more of this.
Spider-Man has always been a character for younger comic readers to relate to, so it makes sense to have him as a teenager. It made sense for him to be a young adult in the video games because the story was more adult.
So agree with you on a lot of what you said, though personally I think the way they handled the villains/crime stuff was really smart. instead of stopping the main story to introduce a new villain/their story, they instead set them up earlier to pay it off later and have them tie into each other but still kept what made said character that character. At the start the first major villains Peter fought were vulture, electrode and lizard who were generally stand alone/unrelated to the main story. But then that gave tombstone, hammerhead (Spider-Man more mob based villains) the idea of creating villains for spidey to fight that would stop him from interfering in organized crime, so they used Norman and doc ock to create rhino, shocker and sand man (rogues who don’t take the focus of major story arcs/are light on villain backstory & motive so having them be regular thugs turned super works well) and finally in turn this act creates doc ock and gives Norman the idea of becoming a villain himself to rule over the criminal world
This show was my childhood introduction to Spiderman. Years later as a hardcore Spidey fan, I feel very fortunate having gotten to watch this masterpiece growing up. Easily one of the best superhero animated series ever made, in the same league as Batman:TheAnimatedSeries. Its early cancelation was a true crime.
This was My Spider-Man growing up and is still my favorite Spider-Man series, amazing voice cast, story, characters, character moments, and messages. And as much as I want this series to return I'm also scared at what they would do that could damage this show's legacy, the only way they should bring this back is with the same team they had for writing, animators, VAs, and anything else that went into making this Gem And when he said "(this media) Understands the comics" honestly most media understands the comics more than the comics now
I love how many of these villains you can understand. Not necessarily sympathetic characters, but ones where you can see where they're coming from, and not just the obvious ones like Eddie and Dr. Conners. Vulture is bitter at his old boss, Doc Ock felt unappreciated, Electro has anger management issues. There's a layer of humanity to these characters that makes them more entertaining to watch while still providing the traditional villain tropes
Story time: when I was a kid, I entered a toy sweepstakes for this show when it began airing on the WB. My mom told me to not get my hopes up too high, as many kids enter those and the ad says "few will win". Fast forward a few weeks, and I get a huge package in the mail, saying I'm a first-prize winner, complete with TONS of awesome Spidey action figures inside! I still have them in a box in my garage, so I can pass them onto my own kids one day.
Steve Blum's voice for the character was great. I really like how the show somehow managed to keep the Goblins identity a secret despite it being common knowledge, and I also really like that the Green Goblin has his own agency in this show, unlike The 90s series or Rami movies where it's a split personality thing.
This was my Childhood Spider-Man!!! I watched this so much, and *THAT* Theme Song still stuck inside my head all these years later!!! And when he showed up in Across to Spider-Verse, I Fangirled so hard!!!
The show honestly has my two favorite castings for MJ and Peter. Josh Keaton is my voice for Spider-Man. And Vanessa Marshall with her husky voice adds more attractiveness to MJ. Just hearing her say “Hey there, Tiger” adds more.
Spectacular is probably my favourite Spidey adaptation, although I still think the Raimi films get the character pretty well. And I really appreciate the little visual homages to those movies that the show did.
I prefer the 90s Animated series but this is a close 2nd. I just prefer the art style of TAS more but the writing in Spectacular is very strong and I’d love to see a revival for it like The Clone Wars got
This show takes place before the mutant hate is at its peak and even before the Avengers team up and become the prime superheroes of that world in the other shows, so for the most part is just Peter dealing with hell on Earth on his own. That is pretty cool.
My top Spider-Man media here!! Watching again as an adult it changed my view a lot. The show is still amazing. I remember as a kid I felt bad for Peter a lot of the times, just getting beaten and his life challenged. But as an adult I see him living his life with the consequences of his choices. This to me is my favorite Spider-Man not because he’s perfect, but because of how imperfect he is and what he does to solve those problems or make them worse.
you know there's still an audience when Spectacular- one of the background Spidey's who's not even a member of the main cast- actually got a line in Across the Spider-Verse; even got the same voice actor. hopefully that proves there's still an audience.
Fun fact since it was brought up. The 90’s series created the idea that the black suit warps Peters personality. In comic Peter gets rid of it because he sees it as enslaving a living being and venom comes for him out of a feeling of betrayal
Ngl, when I was growing up and heard about this show, I didn't want to get into it mainly cause for the the animation style just wasn't the best in my opinion. But when I decided to binge it, boy was this an amazing experience. From the story arcs, to the characters, to the villians, my God was this show everything a Spider-Man was wanted. Personally, I gotta say my favorite villians were definitely Green Goblin and Venom. Also love how they show cased other bad guys who aren't as popular as major threats, like Tombstone and Chameleon. And I heard that if season 3 did happen, Hobgoblin would've been introduced, and while I'm not a huge fan of his character, I would've loved to have seen where they went with him. Honestly the only villian I wasn't a huge fan of was Kraven, which is a shame as he's in my personal top 5 favorites when it comes to Spidey's baddies, I just really didn't like how he became part lion. I mean we already have enough animal themed villians and that transformation is just too much like the Lizard's gimmick. But that's really my only nitpick, everything else about this show was incredible and just like Doug said, I really hope this show makes some kind of comeback in the future.
Josh Keaton and Yuri Lowenthal are my two favorite voices for Peter/Spider-Man, which is why I actually like Across the Spider-Verse had both of them make quick blink and you'll miss it cameos
A really nice touch, if you look, is that the black suit starts off looking like the Maguire black suit. But as it influences Peter more, it warps into the comic black suit.
Man, this was such a good show. I remember watching Spectacuoar Spider-Man back when it was on Disney Channel, and admiring the refreshing changes to the source material. Despite the simplistic designs and relatively cheap animation (Ben Ten: Alien Force and Batman: The Brave and the Bold came out the same time), the highlights made up for the flaws: Exploring Peter's relationship with Eddie, having the Symbiote put a stronger front in trying to remain bonded to Spider-Man, making most of his villains part of an interconnected storyline involving Oscorp experimentation and gang warfare. I'll still have more nostalgiac memories of the '90s series, but I recognize the Spectacular Spider-Man as the superior Spider-Man (no pun intended).
As a big Spider-Man fan, I haven’t watched this yet! Admittedly, I have a hard time getting into TV in general and especially animated kid shows unless my kids are watching them 😂 but you totally sold me! This show looks like some thing I absolutely need to watch! I remember you selling me really well on gravity falls and now I absolutely love it! Definitely one of the best TV shows ever made!
I’ve met the man who plays Peter in this Josh Keaton, and I was a fan of him not for this (because I knew him from something else) but he is genuinely one of the nicest people I’ve ever met. You can tell he’s passionate about his work
This cartoon is literally spectacular! I was already in college when this cartoon came out on KidsWB, and I only watched this cartoon because my friends were telling me there was a brand new Spider-Man cartoon, and then they cancelled it! Disney bought Marvel and Sony lost the rights to produce another season, that’s a crime!
Spectacular Spider-Man is one of those shows that made me care about the high school and personal problems of Peter Parker just as much as the fights with Spider-Man and his foes I am not kidding, there are times when I skipped the fight scenes of the episode just to see more of what’s going on with Peter Parker and the gang Still, the show had some good fights The fights against the Sinister Six and the fights with Venom come to mind
This is definitely my favourite superhero show ever. This is my second or third favourite representation of Spider-Man next to MCU Spider-Man and PS4 Spider-Man. It gets the characters down perfectly and I’ve been watching it since it came out and I was 8. I loved it then and I still do. It’s just one of the best Spider-Man properties ever and is one of the best depictions of Spider-Man as a character.
I will always love Spider-Man the Animated Series but I got to give Spectacular its props! Fantastic story yet criminally underrated no thanks to Disney not wanting to pursue another season! Another missed opportunity sadly!😢
Speaking of the art style, while I can understand someone thinking it’s odd/a bit to cartoony I feel more superhero shows should have art styles like this. I feel too many superhero cartoons feel the need to be hyper realistic which often results in either stiffer animation or feel the need to take away the tights and costumes and just have everything in battle armor (basically removing the theatrics that made superhero’s superhero’s) Shows like spectacular, avengers earth’s mightiest and of course the DCAU take on a more simplified style and I feel that helped them a lot (both in translating designs and making them stand out

Idk its like a mixture of the Scott Pilgrim and Iron Giant.
One of the greatest nostalgic superhero shows I grew up with and versions of Spider-man
1:29 I actually enjoy him seeing him at high school cause it’s a coming of age story and we see how much he still doesn’t know. But I do want to see more of what he’s like in college
Spectacular still holds the honour of having my favourite Spider-Man TV opening of all time.
Easily one of my favourite Spiderman properties.
Also (Spoilers for Across the Spiderverse):
Having Josh Keaton reprise his role as Spectacular in that movie made me super happy to say the least.
I loved season 1 and season 2 of this show and I'm sad that it never got its season 3.
This show really balances all of Peter’s friends really well
one artistic decision I love of this show is how Peter's shirt tag is always sticking out. It's small, but I find it funny
So happy to hear that this show is the next on your list of best Spider-Man adaptations that they finally represent him well outside the comics.
Like I love how tombstone and Norman create supervillains in order to distract Spider-Man from the organized crime world but at the same time use it for characters like rhino, sand man and shocker, characters who don’t have major focus in Spider-Man story arcs so having them be thugs turned supervillains by others works (plus for rhino and sandman that still reflects their origins just in a tweaked way so it doesn’t just use them in name only)
The Spider-Man show that didn't deserve to get cancel
What are your favorite episodes?
¿what do you think of this scene? 6:34
5:38 I would argue that the 90s animated series did it pretty faithfully.
I’m on my 3rd rewatch of the series and still can’t get enough of how incredible this series was.
This show is one of the best spider man cartoons I have ever seen
The best Spider-Man iteration I've seen in years. 👍
This in my opinion is the best interpretation of Spider-Man, everything about him is PERFECT
This show was made by the same guy as Gargoyles and Young Justice.
Greg Weisman must be some kind of god of animation.
This was MY Spider-Man when I was kid. Watched this every Saturday morning on 4Kidz channel........good times 😢
This show deserves a revival big time.
What do you think of that venom scene? 6:36
I watched this show in preparation for Across the Spider-Verse, and I'm glad I did. Especially since I was able to recognize his cameo in the film. I would like it if we got a season or two more of this.
Finally it comes to this, Spectacular Spider-Man is easily one of Kids WB/ Disney XD's best shows 🥰🥰🥰
It’s so nice seeing something where Venom isn’t an anti hero again
The symbiote suit fight against the sinister six is perfect
Josh Keaton still remains my favourite voice for Spider-Man
One of my favorite cartoons growing up
The season 2 finale twist is still one of the best plot twists I've ever seen
And as much as I want this series to return I'm also scared at what they would do that could damage this show's legacy, the only way they should bring this back is with the same team they had for writing, animators, VAs, and anything else that went into making this Gem
And when he said "(this media) Understands the comics" honestly most media understands the comics more than the comics now
I love how many of these villains you can understand.
The Mob boss episode of this show was the best episode of nearly anything ever.
The spectacular Spider-Man is definitely a great Spider-Man series that was canceled for stupid reasons.
Sony Pictures Entertainment still owns The Spectator Spider-Man not Disney
And by far the best Green Goblin ever!
Sorry, best ANIMATED Green Goblin ever
FINALLY! You're doing this Series!
This comment needs to be way up higher on the list. Christopher Daniel Barnes and Roscoe Lee Brown brought their A game and left it all on the mat.
@@ArabianShark Christopher Daniel Barnes’s voice is the voice I hear in my head when reading Spider-Man stories
My childhood right here!!! Love this show so much!
This show takes place before the mutant hate is at its peak and even before the Avengers team up and become the prime superheroes of that world in the other shows, so for the most part is just Peter dealing with hell on Earth on his own. That is pretty cool.
Huh,so that's the timeline so like this before Stark returns from being held by terrorists?
He may be sick of _that_ point in Spiderman's life, but it's the origin story for a reason. How writers handle it is the key.
¿what do you think of this scene? 6:34
Great, now I have the theme song stuck in my head again
"Spec-Ta-Cular, Spec- Ta-Cular, Spider-Man..."
Spectacular Spider-Man also made My Son, The Astronaut interesting. Let’s not forget about that.
¿what do you think of this scene? 6:34
Animated series The Spectacular Spider-Man the best version of all and this is 100% fact!
Best Spider-Man cartoon series ever
Fun fact since it was brought up. The 90’s series created the idea that the black suit warps Peters personality. In comic Peter gets rid of it because he sees it as enslaving a living being and venom comes for him out of a feeling of betrayal
¿Que opinás de Venom de esta serie?
So awesome you checked it out. It's really well written and gets you on the edge of your seat.
Spectacular Spider-Man is one of those shows that made me care about the high school and personal problems of Peter Parker just as much as the fights with Spider-Man and his foes
I am not kidding, there are times when I skipped the fight scenes of the episode just to see more of what’s going on with Peter Parker and the gang
Still, the show had some good fights
The fights against the Sinister Six and the fights with Venom come to mind
This is why he’s in “across the spider-verse”
This is definitely my favourite superhero show ever. This is my second or third favourite representation of Spider-Man next to MCU Spider-Man and PS4 Spider-Man. It gets the characters down perfectly and I’ve been watching it since it came out and I was 8. I loved it then and I still do. It’s just one of the best Spider-Man properties ever and is one of the best depictions of Spider-Man as a character.
Это мультсериал про Человека-Паука был очень классным!
Spectacular spiderman definitely deserves the clone wars treatment.
I will always love Spider-Man the Animated Series but I got to give Spectacular its props! Fantastic story yet criminally underrated no thanks to Disney not wanting to pursue another season! Another missed opportunity sadly!😢
I love this show so freaking much. One of my favorite animated shows of all time, and my favorite version of spider-man
What is your favorite episode
@albertocamilomejiaroldan6116 idk that i have a favorite episode, i just love the show as a whole
What do you think of Sandman in this series?
This will forever be Spider-Man's best show. CHANGE. MY. MIND. Right down to the stylized artsyle.
Hulu is on Disney plus
Speaking of the art style, while I can understand someone thinking it’s odd/a bit to cartoony I feel more superhero shows should have art styles like this. I feel too many superhero cartoons feel the need to be hyper realistic which often results in either stiffer animation or feel the need to take away the tights and costumes and just have everything in battle armor (basically removing the theatrics that made superhero’s superhero’s) Shows like spectacular, avengers earth’s mightiest and of course the DCAU take on a more simplified style and I feel that helped them a lot (both in translating designs and making them stand out
