I heard that this was Prince's "subtle" way of giving a big middle finger to Rolling Stone magazine, because not long before this, they released a, "Best 100 guitarists ever" and he wasn't mentioned on it and felt slighted..Now we have this masterpiece of a performance haha.

he didn't rehearsal. he didn't appear when he was supposed to. And he got told "ok, do whatever you want". i think his job was very close to improvisation. If you look at the strange chords at the beginning you realize. He only told Danie, George's son, I will try to put a smile on your face (because it was potentially a sad day for him). he smiled to Petty and got smiled back. It's a funny serious thing.

As Prince finished his solo after he leaned back off the stage he goes to step on the pedal to mute his guitar and looks over at Petty. Petty tells him to keep playing because he knows it is something special. I love that smile Prince gets, like a kid who was just told he can have a second piece of cake.

"Wait, Prince plays the guitar?" haha. In his early years, Prince released several albums where he wrote the songs, played EVERY SINGLE INSTRUMENT, did all the vocals, production, arrangement and everything else. He was truly a one-man show back then, and it was magical!

Buck Buchanan Don’t you sometimes feel you can’t emphasis more emphatically the genius of Prince. My friend was minder to him in 1992 when he came out to Australia. She is a beautiful black South African and nearly 6ft. She said he is tiny, very very shy, very polite and hardly spoke in the 14 days she looked after the tour. When he went on stage, it was as though he flicked a switch. He put so much energy into every show that he came off exhausted. She said he had a beautiful full blue aura and was psychic. She is also, in fact she says we all are, we just have to learn to open the third eye.

Steve Winwood might be a little more obscure for you, he was a member of a few legendary bands including The Spencer Davis Group, Traffic, Blind Faith, and he also had a pretty successful solo career around the 80s. If you hear guitar on a Prince track, it's him playing... whether or not there's a guitar in his music video.
He's known for playing and tracking every instrument on an album, only needing a band for live touring.
    Keyboard, bass, drums, guitar, vocals....
    Master level work.
Later in his career, he did these sets were it's just him, a guitar and a close audience, like in a large bar or town hall. These are amazing sessions of him playing back and fourth with the audience. His love for music truly shining.
It saddens me to think about his passing but fortunately, we have his recordings.

Steve Winwood is legendary, starting out playing with his dad onstage as an 8 year old and having his 1st professional band at 14-15 years old in the 60s. A musical genius with a one of a kind voice. He played on Jimi Hendrix's Vodoo Chile, and Jimi was nervous to ask him because "he's so good". "Gimme Some Lovin" is one of those iconic songs everyone has heard, but no one knows it's Steve! Blind Faith was a super group with him, Eric Clapton and Ginger Baker. The Beatles and the Stones were all wondering who this kid was who sounded like Ray Charles? Not satisfied with that, in the 80s he comes back huge to win 2 Grammy's with 2 huge albums full of incredible, upbeat songs that we all watched over and over on MTV. The chorus in Valerie, (Valerie, call on me) was used in 2004 by Eric Prydz to make 'Call on me', which is basically just Steve's chorus to Valerie over and over to a techno beat. Eric contacted Steve and Steve liked it so much, he re-recorded the chorus so it would fit the faster tempo. It was also a huge, huge hit! He's one of my all time favorite artists and I still listen to him most days. (Prince will also always be my favorite, since around 7th grade in the late 70s)

Prince played 27 instruments. He was a genius. ANY musician will say that.....have admitted they could never come close to what he was capable of. He was my first concert, Purple Rain tour 1984/85. I was a junior in high school. To add a little flavor to this comment, I'm a white chick, had a montage of pictures and posters of him all over my bedroom walls and was attending a private catholic high school in a pretty snotty area. My parents HATED all the stuff on my walls. I honestly don't know how I talked them into letting me go...all I can think is it must have been traumatic b/c I have no memory of how it happened. I'm sure there was some intense begging. So glad you found this vid. All legends on the stage. Cheers.

Dude, I’ve been a massive Prince fan all my life since I first heard him in the mid 80’s. I’ve seen him in concert so many times and he is without a shadow of a doubt, THE ultimate live performer. After a concert in London, we managed to get special aftershow tickets. I was stood 4 foot away from him while he shredded for 4 hours infront of about 1000 people. There were famous guests all over and it was magical. I’ll never forget that. Feels like you’re in the presence of a musical deity, it really transported you to a different place.
