Prince literally made the guitar cry. He knew exactly what chords to play to give that sound. That, coupled with great technique and musicianship and we get an amazing performance. Go Prince!

Great video.. The easiest thing for Dhjani, George's son to have done was to ask Eric Clapton to play the tribute, he was there in the audience, but then Jeff Lynne's guy wouldn't have gotten his few seconds to shine trying hard to replicate what Clapton did on the original recording, an NO ONE would be talking about this performance, it would have been put in the dust bin with all of the other Rock Hall Tributes, but Dhjani wanted his favorite musician to do it, Prince because he KNEW Prince would be Prince and do something ICONIC so no one would forget this performance and Prince did just that and shut up a lot of people in the process who had NO IDEA how brilliant a guitar player he is. You watch this and you see the only person Prince was concerned with on that stage was Tom Petty, that was who he was physically playing to, he respected Tom and Tom, encouraged him, with just looks, when Prince was gonna stop playing Tom looked at him like you started this, now finish it. LOL This will be talked about and studied FOREVER because Prince was Prince and on that stage..

    • @carllouisyoung
      @carllouisyoung ปีที่แล้ว +5

If you know the whole story behind all of this, pay attention to Dhjani when Jeff Lynne's guy is playing and he is looking at him like MF I didn't want you doing any of that, but then when he turns to look at Prince he has the BIGGEST smile on his face because he KNOWS something special is gonna happen when Prince steps forward and it does. LOL

Dhani asking Eric to play in tribute to his Dad could've been awkward, in my humble opinion.
George's 1st wife Patty Boyd divorced George, for Eric Clapton.
      Eric wrote "Layla" about Patty.
Granted that happend decades before Dhjani was born. 🤷🏼‍♀️

For those not familiar but still digging this, the young guitarist behind and to the left of Tom Petty is George Harrison’s boy, Dhani , the spitting image of his Dad!!
George Harrison had already been inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame by this time 2004 as a member of The Beatles but on this night he was being inducted posthumously as a songwriter/musician in his own right!!
My favourite part in all this is when Prince turns looking at Dhani, Dhani’s face is a picture, a wonderful smile 😊 🎸

It’s too bad they didn’t list all the musicians playing, it’s a truly amazing line up of people with amazing long careers. Tom Petty (he’s on acoustic and sings first) and from his band the Heartbreakers’ Scott Thurston (playing bass here) and drummer Steve Ferrone. From ELO Jeff Lynne (singing and electric guitar) and Marc Mann, the lead guitarist for Lynne’s band), Steve Winwood (Spencer Davis Group, Blind Faith, Traffic on organ), Jim Capaldi (from Traffic, with Winwood, back in the day) on percussion (tambourine), Billy Preston on piano (Billy toured with the Beatles and had hits on his own, Jim Dhani Harrison (George’s son) ... who looks just like his dad. George, along with Jeff, Tom, Bob Dylan and Roy Orbison formed a group named The Traveling Wilbury’s. And of course Prince, who was also an inductee into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame that night.

LIES. Well, it wasn't anything like that. The producer and director of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony, Joel Gallen, wrote a letter to Prince asking if he’d consider performing during George Harrison’s induction. It was Gallen’s “dream” to have Prince come on stage to do the guitar solos in “While My Guitar Gently Weeps.”
However, Prince was his characteristic self when deciding to take Gallen up on his offer. “I got a call from one of Prince’s guys, a week or two later, saying that Prince was in L.A. and he wanted to have a meeting with me,” Gallen told the New York Times. “He said, ‘You know, I got your letter, I liked the idea, I’m going to listen to the song a few times, and I’ll get back to you" BUT once at rehearsals, lead guitarist Marc Mann was a jerk to Prince, interrupting Prince's solo everytime.
Gallen: “They finish, and I go up to Jeff and Tom, and I sort of huddle up with these guys, and I’m like: ‘This cannot be happening. I don’t even know if we’re going to get another rehearsal with him. [Prince]. But this guy cannot be playing the solos throughout the song,'”
“So I talk to Prince about it, I sort of pull him aside and had a private conversation with him, and he was like: ‘Look, let this guy do what he does, and I’ll just step in at the end. For the end solo, forget the middle solo.’ And he goes, ‘Don’t worry about it.’ And then he leaves. They never rehearsed it, really. Never really showed us what he was going to do, and he left, basically telling me, the producer of the show, not to worry. Prince’s 3-minute solo became one of the most iconic moments in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame history.”

My favourite cover of anything by anybody is Princes cover of his dear friend Joni Mitchells "A case of you" from the 2002 album One Nite Alone - he recorded all instruments (beautiful piano playing) and backing vocals for that song at home alone in one night. Maybe that was the reason for the album title.

That other guy singing is Jeff Lynne (Manfred Manns Earth Band, Traveling Wilburys) . Dude on keys is Steve Winwood, Tom Petty on lead and a host of seasoned pro's in this lineup with Dhani Harrison. Yes, Prince killed it. Watch the end all the way through, when Prince throws his guitar he literally left the stage a la George Jefferson from the Jeffersons. Never looked back! He wasn't supposed to be there. He was a guest of Dhani's.

The Harrisons should actually be thankful. So much was made of Prince's solo that later the Harrison estate became critical of Prince for stealing the spotlight from George's moment. Even Dhani, who seemed so enthused during the concert, later came out in an interview that I read and he was also critical of Prince's playing in his dad's song. However if Prince hadn't been there doing that show stopper of a performance, we wouldn't be talking about George Harrison's song or his induction in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Younger people who don't even know the Beatles now know this George Harrison song. Prince gave probably eternal longevity to a song that would have been forgotten by many. I am a Beatles fan and I am a prince, btw.

So true , what was said , George should have maybe been allowed some more of his songs recorded when in 'the Beatles' (& or being in a band with Lennon & McCartney must have been hard at times for both Harrison' & Starr , as far as getting their songs on the records). The however is that ; Lennon & McCartney were such great songwriters and the albums could only be a certain length....... And I hope , there won't be those few close minded people (that think they are artists) that just don't like Prince (& can't admit to being human / limited by life's experience s). I hope I am wrong here in 2023 --we're bigger than all that..... I respect his ability , technique and improvisation skills!! And Prince does love the Beatles...... Just like one of his idols , Jimi Hendrix did..... From there I would not say I am a huge Prince fan (just to be clear for communications / clarifications sake). He does know his circle of fifths & the modes (a bit of Dorian here as well). Prince does play an amazing solo!! Great video!! Great musician...... And R.I.P. George Harrison. Thanks for all the music You wrote......

Simply the best, coldest exit stage-left, pimp-slide walk-off of all time. The guy you don't identify is Jeff Lynn from ELO (Electric Light Orchestra), a hall of fame guitarist. After The Beatles broke up, their long-time producer, George Martin, produced ELO. Hence the Beatles sound-like ties in the ELO library (very similar strings and piano elements). He also worked with George a lot and became good friends, both in The Traveling Wilbury's band (great, great country rock music) before George passed away. By the way, I believe that's Paul McCartney on some keyboards here. I'll never forget I was hurt and disappointed to hear Dahni Harrison (radio interview - You Tube search it) saying he thought Prince went over the top and was somehow playing in the faces of the other guitar players there (the lase soloist, before Prince I can't identify). Which of course ... he was. The Imp Powerful.

On his first album, the other band members could play what he wanted, but they didn't quite do it exactly to his liking. So, Prince played each instrument exactly how he wanted them to play em on every song on the entire album. He was a perfectionist too, right, lol! Although George wrote the song, he asked Eric Clapton to play the lead guitar on it. Taxman another Beatles song written by George had Paul McCartney play the lead solo due to George taking too long to come up with the lead part. Not to say George was not a good guitarist, just that sometimes he felt others can do better a job in certain situations.

Disagree. If you are at the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame being inducted and paying homage to one of the great early Rock n Roll pioneers, you better rock. And since the song is using a guitar weeping as a metaphor, and playing the solo section which was originally done by Clapton, Prince certainly did justice to the song. As a guitarist, I love that he showed out and made that Hohner Madcat Tele cry all the way to the heavens. George caught the guitar and is playing it in the heavens right now.
