    It's nice to see EHX finally make a decent Big Muff after years of making arguably the worst Big Muff's on the market.
    More fuzz, less fizz.
    I'd like to see a head to head comparison between these and the Vick Audio Muffs.

    Wow. I have the Opamp, the Green Russian, the Keeley Dark Side (modded opamp Muff), a NYC modded to Violet RH specs (very close to Triangle), Vick Audio V-2, Caroline Olympia - yet I still want this.
    It seems to be the closest to the classic Gilmour Muff tone, especially late 70's through to mid 90's.
    It sounds to me a lot like his mid-80's live tone (Delicate Sound of Thunder).
    But you proved it can also approximate the earlier stuff, the Echoes tone was great!

    EHX just re-issued the Ram's Head Big Muff. It gets the closet to the Gilmour sound. In fact, I like it so much, I'm going to buy one; even though I already own an OP Amp Big Muff reissue (which I LOVE) and a Big Muff w/Tone Wicker.

    Nice review as always Bjorn. Have you done an A B comparison between this and your BYOC triangle? I have the BYOC, like it a lot especially the mid boost feature. I'm hoping EHX finally re release a rams head. Like you said, it's about time they embrace the big muff heritage.

    • @gilmourishofficial
      @gilmourishofficial  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I did a quick test and I think the BYOC is far more tamed and not nearly as aggressive and boomy. Two very different Muffs... to my ears.

    • @frankbizzoco1954
      @frankbizzoco1954 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Very interesting. I'm sure it's not easy for EHX, or any clone company to hone in on one specific Triangle or Rams head sound because of the inconsistent circuits of the early 70s. But I'm pretty certain if an EHX Rams head came out, I'll gladly buy it.

    • @komodo117
      @komodo117 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@gilmourishofficial Would you consider the tamed, less aggressive sound possibly better towards nailing that DSOTM/Animals Gilmour tone? Also, which one is less noisy? I'm very torn between the BYOC Triangle and this one at the moment. I'm aware he was using a Ram's Head around the time of Animals, but I tend to like the extra spit the Triangle variants have. If you had to choose between the EHX and the BYOC Triangles, which would you go with?

  • @soupertimor
    @soupertimor 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    It is really good and maybe more than expected. I have to precise that I use a very good double compressor. If possible, add it on a cali76 stacked edition and a delay , the result is ...gilmour sound with no noisy bad sound. And the work to learn a good solo from gilmour....gives me shivers because it sounds so good while before there was a lack of something I was searching for. Triangle is very affordable for what it provide!

    Bjorn, if you haven't already I suggest you try a deluxe BASS big muff. I promise you can get a verrrrry convincing Gilmour tone from it. Especially if you play with the crossover and a tinge of clean mix. It has almost identical circuitry to the original Russian. You can change like two components and it is exactly the same. The DBBM plus a light OD is dead on Wall tone. With the crossover engaged a tad, and you got DSoTM or Young Lust ready to roll. I've tried all the muffs minus a couple of originals and the DBBM is by far my favorite, especially for our Floyd gigs.
    Great demo as usual!

      @@mattgilbert7347 the only one I ever found was this one below. It's very generic, but he does go through a few settings just not in context of something like a Gilmour solo. But you get an idea of the very basic tone. And I lied about not having a gate. I totally forget that it does have one. I've been meaning to try using a full on clean blend into my dirt pedals to see if I could use it just as a noise gate if needed. But anyway, I'm gonna try to make a demo of it when I get some time and I will link you that..in the meantime,..... th-cam.com/video/c9-Xy9NGm3M/w-d-xo.html

    Hi Bjorn! I need an advice about my first pedal. I really like both the dark side of the moon and wish you were here, and I’m looking for a versatile pedal that can perform well this album. I don’t like a lot of songs from the wall, apart from Comfortably Numb. I have a boss katana 50 watt amplifier.
    Said that, I looked for some of the fuzz that are on your list (especially the silicon ones) but unfortunately the analog man is not available here in Italy. I can find the jim dunlop for sure, both the big one and the mini version, and some shops have the fulltone 70 too (the new version). Should I buy one of these two or look for a muff instead?

    • @gilmourishofficial
      @gilmourishofficial  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm not sure I would go for a fuzz for the Katana. Fuzz pedals are very sensitive to the amp and although the Katana can handle pretty much anything you might be better off with something a bit more versatile. See this feature for more www.gilmourish.com/?p=7115

    Bjorn, have you done the new Op Amp Muff yet? It doesn't look like you have. Maybe you can wait 2 days on that then if you've planned on releasing a demo. Because I just got my hands on the new Triangle Muff, and the Op Amp Muff, and I'm going to do a shoot-out of both with my EHX Big Muff Pi w/ Tone Wicker. I may include some other fuzzes or distortions (my Little Bear R.ATTACK-2, for instance) at the end for fun. But primarily I want to see how these two new Muffs compare to the big box, standard version. Video should be up on my channel within 2-3 days.
    Have yet to get my hands on the Green Russian. I may add that if my video gets any likes. Maybe I'll get the Way Huge version too.

      This is covered in Phil Taylor's Black Strat book. He used the modified 1983 Fender '62 reissue Strat with the Roland synth pickup. Pictures reveal the he used most of the 1984-85 About Face setup, which featured Fender amps. Effectswise I would guess a Boss HM2 into a Mesa head and chorus. Might be a Muff too... I really don't know.

    Amazing review, it needs an amp with good amount of mids and compression, but i have a doubt, it works just as well as in your Reeves through a blues junior iii tweed? i think it has jensen speaker, it's a new version of blues junior's series

    • @gilmourishofficial
      @gilmourishofficial  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The Blues Jr has considerably less and mids and compression compared to a Hiwatt or Reeves. It's also a much brighter sounding amp so I'd might consider the Green Russian or something else alltogether.

      David Gilmour has mainly been using the Ram's Head. From 1976 to present. He did also use the Sovtek in the 90s and on the recent Rattle That Lock tour. IMO the Green Russian is the best sounding of the three new EHX reissues but the Ram's Head is right up there. The Triangle sound a bit too dark and gated for my taste. Ultimately, all three will cover David's tones. See my channel for comparisons and reviews of all three. See my site gilmourish.com for more.

    • @gilmourishofficial
      @gilmourishofficial  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Fair question but then again, it's about taste and availability I guess. Personally, I thought the Muffuletta had some very nice tones but I don't think it has the same character and "mojo" (in lack of a better description) as some of the other clones out there. I think EHX has hit the mark with their new reissues.

      A lot of guys say this.
      What about the regular Deluxe Big Muff? Kit Rae claims you can tweak it to sound like pretty much any of the other Muffs, and even get Fuzzface-ish tones from it. Problem is, that would mean tweaking knobs while playing a gig. I can handle one or two manual adjustments when playing live, but mostly I like to set my pedals up and use a MIDI-capable true bypass loop switcher.

    • @LeviBulger
      @LeviBulger 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@mattgilbert7347 absolutely I agree with Kit, the deluxe is extremely flexible. Personally I prefer the bass version simply because of the optional clean blend (which really tames the low end), the Russian base tone, and the crossover effect that kinda does what the deluxe does just a bit differently. It does not have the exp pedal option, but I would never use that as much as the blend. Having the crossover and DI capabilities is massive for me because I like to detune from time to time, as well as use a baritone. It's just so flexible and sounds massive. Hitting the crossover during a solo gives you a cocked wah tone that is killer. But just using a tinge of the crossover gets you that seemingly impossible mid-range scream with Russian flavor. The deluxe can also do it, just with an NYC muff flavor. I will probably never go back to using any other Muff

      @gilmourishofficial  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Depends on which era you prefer I guess. The triangle is very close to that late 70s and 80s Gilmour. Especially his live tones from that era. The Green Russian fits the 90s perfectly but it also depends on the amp and pickups.

      I have the Mooer Triangle Buff copy of this Triangle Big Muff, but I pass difficult to simulate tone of Gilmour, my impression that this pedal has a Very dirty tone, the only tone that i could I used a booster with treeble And Bass for try better frequencies!

    • @gilmourishofficial

      You can get very close with both I think. The Green Russian has less gain, so turn it up - almost all the way - and you're there.

      Stick with the green. It has better mids and like Bjorn said, it's a lot smoother. Hit it with a compressor or an sd1 if you have to!

    • @cHzism
      @cHzism 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@LeviBulger I don't know, I quite like the spiky-ness of this one. Already using a Yellow Comp when using overdrive, gonna have to tweak around!

    • @LeviBulger
      @LeviBulger 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@cHzism yeah it really comes down to your amp and preference. But in a vacuum, I think the green suits more rigs. The triangle definitely wouldn't work for Fender amps but probably sounds great with mid heavy amp.

      I ' ve got a green russian, a Vick audio Rams head, a nano big muff and a NYC standard. They all sounds great in the clean (or the crunch with mild overdrive) channel of the Katana. The best, IMO, is the green russian, overall if you play with a band. Anyway , I think the katana is a great base for effects.

    they are not - it's mass produced SMD garbage - china modular electronics - the components are so tiny the tolerances are not the same - the tone is not the same - its cool and serves a purpose but the nano shit is tired - id rather pay more for a through hole design any day - and wave soldering makes it fast and streamlined - the tolerances will be closer to the original units - these are just slightly tweaked BMP's with "cool" graphics nothing about these reissues resemble the original units - not in appearance - not in circuit design - these are made to feed the machine - anyone can build a BMP clone - you have to learn how to solder - it will take several hours to build but can be done for about 5 bucks

      Considerably more low end and gain.

    • @LeviBulger
      @LeviBulger 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Definitely more low end, and it's really apparent because it's so scooped. I'm sure they got really close to the original triangle, but for Gilmour I would stick to a Russian circuit or a solid Ram's head style

    • @PANICBLADE
      @PANICBLADE 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I'm a bass player and I own both. The Triangle booms. Lows on the Russian are tighter. The tone control turned counterclockwise adds low end actually.

      In Kit Rae's demos it seemed to have more mids than the GR

    • @gilmourishofficial
      @gilmourishofficial  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The Green Russian has noticeably more mids and it gets even more the more your turn up the tone. The Triangle is louder, with more gain, which might be reason why it seem to cut through more but the tone is very open and scooped and the tone gets brighter and almos ice picky when you turn it up.

    What I don't understand after trying this pedal, is how could you keep volume at 12 o'clock.
    On mine with level at 9 volume is above unity already...
