I have the Russian and the Ram’s Head, I prefer the Russian: more mids, more clarity in spite of the huge amount of bass, less gainy and less compressed but still great and “cleaner” sustain. It also has a vibe and a voice of its own that I love. Thanks Bjorn, great video as always!
I know why I sold my EHX Big Muff Pi and Buffalo FX Rams Head (from Buffalo Fx), and just kept the EHX Green Russian... I think it is important to recognize which distortion pedal has the closest sound what you nailed. Unless stocking up lots of pedal, you will love and appreciate your picked one better than before. Kind of psychological stuff, but truE. Anyway ehx for the upload Bjørn.

well, in context of "gilmour", the rams is the most gilmour one. which mean EH did really well on recreating the muffs. but somehow I also like the green one. sorta in between the triangle and rams.
Never been overly keen on Muffs, at least when I'm playing 😂, but to me the Green Russian sounds the best in your hands because it's a little more balanced, tonally, than the other two.
Ram’s Head. It seems to have that extra 10% of complexity and one of the best reissues of any pedal I’ve come across. The Triangle is great but seems to lack a certain something. Great comparison video!
I’m researching which one is best for me, and I’m only coming to the conclusion that I want all of them. First it was the rams, then the Russian, but now I have a new grown appreciation for the Triangle, but even the Op Amp.
I'd say they work: Russian for Humbuckers, Ramshead for "vintage" single coil pickups and Triangle for more modern feel (such as Fender's Noiseless) single coil pickups
Funny I did the comparison in a guitar shop. Too bad I just see this video now. But actually the funny thing is the conclusion was the same for me: I picked up the Green Russian. I like the Triangle just a tad more than the Green Russian but I'm surprised I didn't like the Ram's head as much,I've heard and played real ones and A/B'd real ones with real Green Russians and Triangles alongside the reissues and those are totally killer. Not to mention all the Ram's Head clones I love.
Spectacular demo and playing. The Ram's Head seems to have just a bit more dynamics, singing sustain, and note definition to me. They all sound great but you know what makes them tick and that is all the difference.

I am very partial to the Triangle because I bought one new in 1971 but of course sold it 12 years later when fuzz was out Mesa Boogie was in. Got the Triangle reissue, it’s just like I remember it-sweet sounding but scooped. I still have a green Russian Sovtek which sounds amazing but may buy the reissue because it’s true bypass plus that earthshaking lead tone with the right combination of frequencies.
I recently bought a mini pedal called "mini muff" from mosky audio. It's a Chinese muff pedal based in the original big muff Ram's head, it's a great pedal for the price. The only problem that I could notice is that it has much bass, that's why it does sound a little bit strange while only using the muff, but you can add an overdrive before it and it sounds really good (for me). I recommend it for those people who wants to spend less money and see how it sounds like :)
I think they are all very beautiful. It depends on what you're looking for and what sounds you have in mind when you think of a big muff. In the case of David Gilmour, if like me you are convinced that the best big muff sounds are those of Animals, the Wall, Final cut, then you have only one choice: Ram's head. It is useless to take a green russian or a triangle.. Or if you are tied to the Gilmour / Pulse period, then you must necessarily take a Green russian. I would like to say a word about the live use or in a live band context of these three fantastic big muff reissues: none of the three work well on their own, not even the green russian. You have to use a boost, even better if you use an overdrive put before, otherwise you get lost in the mix. Of course it depends on your amp, and surely having a Hiwatt or a Marshall would help, but it's still not enough. Whichever big muff you decide to use, know that you'll need to add an overdrive to make it sound right. Clearly the speech refers to a live / band use. At home if you play alone you can also use it without adding anything else.
Seeing how this video is old, but I follow you and your music that I have purchased on iTunes and social media. I figured I would ask this because you would be the ones to know and hopefully maybe you will answer me. I have been learning David’s technique for over a year now I keep it on clean tone to make sure all my bends are perfect and come out right and are at the right pitch plus, I am starting over with gear due to life adjustments so to say so if you had to choose a big muff to get even if not on here like th New Keeley 4 in 1 Blues Disorder or honestly any of them if you know as they are new or the Hi Power from crazy circuits or The Engine from Drybell…honestly which one would you go with to get most of his tones please! Thank you & even though not new new I love your newest album 🤘🎸🤘bought it on iTunes

For me the Triangle reminds me of the Wall Tones, it also has great String definition. I haven't played enough with the Rams Head as yet but I do like it. I play my Strat with Texas Special p-ups through Ram's Head reissue into Marshall DSL 40CR and it sounds amazing. From what I've heard on YT tests the Russian is most oriented on mid range and to me it sounds too harsh has little cream, while Triangle sounds thin and too fuzzy. Ram's head has more creamy sound and better string separation. My Ram's head works great with an occasional mid boost from an overdrive pedal - it maintains the creaminess, adding more attack and definition. Still it all depends on what guitar and amp you play.
Dude your bending is so beautiful, just that nice little riff alone made this video for me. Sounds so very "Young Lust 'ish", absolutely outstanding. Kind of wish I lived 30 years ago where pedal and effect choices weren't muddied by the easy way out of using emulation hardware/software...
Awesome lead work man. I really like your choice of effects to use, and the amount of each was very well chosen. Got the Gilmour tone, but also highlighted each of the Muffs subtle differences. I mean, they all sounded killer, and were cutting through the mix well. I’ve always been partial to the Rams Head, I really love that Vick Audio Violet Rams Head, and there was a couple pedals by Buffalo FX, that really capture this tone as well.

OOH!!! I heard that instant Comfortably Numb Wall tone when he hit that Ram on the head with the Flange! Hot damn!!! They ALL sound good to my ears! That's really saying something coming from someone who is not impressed by modern pedals in the least, especially clones or re-issues that owns an original V1 Triangle Big Muff Pi... The Ram's Head gets my vote just because it's the obvious choice and nails that tone right on the money. I really like that green one too though...
Excellent comparison demo. I'm torn between the RH and Green Russain. Have you considered doing a demo of how you build up your signal chain to get it exactly how you want it tonally? I'm sure it would be very very popular.
I think it would be really hard to find two vintage ones that sound the same, even if they are supposed to be the same model. Edit: I'd go with the deluxe one btw.
great demo again bjorn, although this kinda shows how silly we can get chasing hundreds of dollars worth of tone. Back in the day I would have said NO I NEED THE RAMS HEAD THATS THE SOUND but nowadays if I had to choose one and be practical, i' have to go with the Green, the added stuff in the EQ ranges makes it more versatile for when you inevitably change your mind about the tone you want. its amazing how long it took EHX to cash in on their OWN DESIGNS and realize how much the pedal industry was changed simply because they refused to keep producing their own old sought after circuits, and you can say you own an original EHX Ram's Head.
All sound great but I like the voice of the Russian a lot. Reminds me of my iron bell a bit. The Pi definitely has that hint of the comfortably numb tone right off the bat. I think I'll be riding up to sam ash soon to get one, I saw all of these three last trip a couple months ago when I bought my ehx crayon. Maybe I'll get all 3 who knows.
I can't agree more about how tone is SO generated from your fingers. I was visiting a friend running sound for a local band and he asked me to tweek the stage amp. After a couple of minutes of just playing someone's guitar through their setup, friend stopped me and asked what adjustments I had made so he could tell the guitarist. I hadn't touch a single knob. I would have been pissed coming back to the stage if someone had messed with my setup.

To me it seems it goes from most saturated/dirty to focus/clean. You can hear it a little bit in the double stops. Rams is in the middle, Russian is almost a fuzzy distortion ... awesome vid Bjorn!

You make them all sound great! I want to built another muff, I have a green russian that I love for its violin highs, but sometimes it is to flubby and boomy 😅 So I want a muff with more gain and a more agressive attack for thighter and more articulate rhythm tone and silky highs for the licks. I am torn between a violet ram and a rams head, but I think I need something in between 😂
@Neon Thunderbird The EHX reissues definitely, if you check the schematics of the vintage ones there were a lots if different versions. That is one reason why you can buy so many different versions from Muff cloners and builders
wow definitely been waiting for this comparison !! since you made the video of the first one But the sound of the recording here is out of this world and really tells the story of each pedal the thing is that I’ve watched the videos with the buffalo fx pedals and they really blew my mind . are they really worth the extra cash or do you recommend settling on EHX ? and if the buffalo fx which one do you like better the evolution or the patriot ? Thanks for the kind words! The Evolution is closer to a Rat so you can't really compare it to these. The Patriot is very similar to the Green Russian. The recent MkII has a mid range control as well.
When I originally heard them I didn’t think they sounded different enough to justify buying all 3,so I bought all 3.

I bought the new Ram’s head a few weeks ago and I love it. It’s on my board next to my favourite fuzz, the Black Ash.
I got all three as well. I’ve used an original green years ago // and the re issue is awesome. It’s just so clear so for me green.

The green Russian sounds so good. When I play with my Les Paul I dont have to turn the sustain up as high. 1ish or so 2ish
Close - but the Rams head for me. I also like the reserve of sustain of the Triangle and Rams head over the Russian.

I don´t notice a big difference beetween the 3 at all. I have the Triangle and I am very pleased with it.
Yes they're all very similar with only subtle nuances. You can definitely hear it but it's more of a feel I guess.
Differently the Green for me very smooth sounds very gilmourish :-)

great demo again bjorn, although this kinda shows how silly we can get chasing hundreds of dollars worth of tone. Back in the day I would have said NO I NEED THE RAMS HEAD THATS THE SOUND but nowadays if I had to choose one and be practical, i' have to go with the Green, the added stuff in the EQ ranges makes it more versatile for when you inevitably change your mind about the tone you want. its amazing how long it took EHX to cash in on their OWN DESIGNS and realize how much the pedal industry was changed simply because they refused to keep producing their own old sought after circuits, and you can say you own an original EHX Ram's Head.
All of these can me set up to cover all of David's Muff tones. It comes down to what nuances your prefer. They're very similar.
All sound great but I like the voice of the Russian a lot. Reminds me of my iron bell a bit. The Pi definitely has that hint of the comfortably numb tone right off the bat. I think I'll be riding up to sam ash soon to get one, I saw all of these three last trip a couple months ago when I bought my ehx crayon. Maybe I'll get all 3 who knows.

Thanks! The Velvet sounds really great. More of a Rat, with a thicker fuzz tone than a Muff though.

I can't agree more about how tone is SO generated from your fingers. I was visiting a friend running sound for a local band and he asked me to tweek the stage amp. After a couple of minutes of just playing someone's guitar through their setup, friend stopped me and asked what adjustments I had made so he could tell the guitarist. I hadn't touch a single knob. I would have been pissed coming back to the stage if someone had messed with my setup.

I'm not a huge fan of my Green Russian but the Rams head is best fuzz i've used for guitar.
To me it seems it goes from most saturated/dirty to focus/clean. You can hear it a little bit in the double stops. Rams is in the middle, Russian is almost a fuzzy distortion ... awesome vid Bjorn!

Ram's Head has just the right amount of fuzz to my ears to capture that Gilmourish sound. I like the green as well. Can't go wrong with either.

Triangle is my favorit pedal....extreme tone.
You make them all sound great! I want to built another muff, I have a green russian that I love for its violin highs, but sometimes it is to flubby and boomy 😅 So I want a muff with more gain and a more agressive attack for thighter and more articulate rhythm tone and silky highs for the licks. I am torn between a violet ram and a rams head, but I think I need something in between 😂
@Neon Thunderbird The EHX reissues definitely, if you check the schematics of the vintage ones there were a lots if different versions. That is one reason why you can buy so many different versions from Muff cloners and builders

Ram's head sounds the smoothest to me with the best sustain. But the Russian has that great lower register honk that just works for some songs.
Russia For me, has a clarity and smoothness the other ones do not have. Superb playing, as usual.

wow definitely been waiting for this comparison !! since you made the video of the first one But the sound of the recording here is out of this world and really tells the story of each pedal the thing is that I’ve watched the videos with the buffalo fx pedals and they really blew my mind . are they really worth the extra cash or do you recommend settling on EHX ? and if the buffalo fx which one do you like better the evolution or the patriot ? Thanks for the kind words! The Evolution is closer to a Rat so you can't really compare it to these. The Patriot is very similar to the Green Russian. The recent MkII has a mid range control as well.
