Railroading is when you split the two strands with your needle before you pull the needle back through the fabric. One way or both ways.

Great video, ladies!! Love the flat fold finishes!! No, I’m afraid I would not want to open a cross stitch store. I am an Indian, not a chief. However, if I wasn’t retired, I would love to work in a cross stitch store! I wouldn’t take home much money! LOL

20 years ago, I would have very much liked to have owned a cross stitch/ quilt shop. Fabric and threads are a very important part of my every day life. But now that I am in my 70's, I would not want the headaches that would come with that responsibility. Working part time, 1 day a week like Carol, would be ideal. Unfortunately, there aren't any shops nearby to pursue that thought.

Would I open a store? No. If an opportunity had come up 20 years ago, maybe…but now? NO WAY! I’m retired and want to spend my time stitching, not working. 😊

I really like the Jack's Choice quilt; I'll be looking for that pattern or something similar. Beautiful stitching finishes, too! As always, y'all are a hoot and I really enjoyed spending time with you. I see that people have already explained railroading. Another way I keep my stitches neat is by using a laying tool or a needle trolley. Those are especially helpful when stitching with three (or more) threads. As to owning a shop -- no, thank you! I don't want to work that hard! =)

Thanks so much for another great video. As usual, I am inspired to get some finishing done! I would not like to own a cross stitch store - living in Zambia there would be no demand for one but I also love just being on the farm. Having worked in the city for 15 years travelling 100kms each way, every day, I am enjoying retirement! Happy stitching.

You both have had some busy stitching and sewing weeks. Very nice projects. I don't think I would own a cross stitch store. Maybe a craft store. Because I love to do so many different needlework disciplines, I think cross stitch alone would be restricting for me. Plus, I think you would need more knowledge than I have. I'm still a questioner as opposed to an answerer. Good luck the next few weeks with doctors and graduations. Congratulations to the Princess.

It would be great to own a cross stitch shop but Hobbyhouse is 40 minutes East and it's pretty much a destination. If I had a shop though, I'd love to have open stitching on a Friday night. That way you start the weekend off with some fun! Years ago my Mom and I used to go to Friday night quilt night. We had so much fun and met so many wonderful people. I miss those nights! Good luck with the graduations. My Mom and Dad watched my niece yesterday for Masters Graduation and Dad took pictures of the t.v. livestream and he got better pictures than anyone! See you next time! 😊

You sure had lots of pretty finishes and WIPs today. Jennifer, your quilt is gorgeous! Carol, that wedding piece for Jennifer is gorgeous, and what a huge amount of work. I wouldn't open a cross stitch store. A lot of time would go into doing office work and not stitching. I love being a kid in a candy store when I open my LNS's door; I have no idea what new treasures l'll find.
I have a question to propose: have family or friends ever returned pieces you've gifted to them? One family member returned birth samplers I made for her children. The kids are grown, the samplers no longer hung, and take up space. A friend returned a needlepoint I gifted over 40 yrs ago. Not being hung, taking up space. I don't see myself as a lending library, and have the same storage issues as everyone else. It's a bit hurtful too. I think they figure I'll appreciate getting them back rather then them being taken to a charity shop. Take care and happy stitching.

If money was not an issue, I would 100% want to own and operate a cross stitch shop. I would have classes and a comfy room to stitch with space for 30+ ppl. Unfortunately, I know how uncertain / challenging it is to own a business and would be way too stressed if this was my only income. If I didn’t have to work to earn a living (maybe I have a trust fund that I don’t know about? HaHa) I would be looking for a spot for my shop right now.

Oh I just love you guys! It’s always so fun to watch you and have a laugh or two! What a sweet quilt for your son Jen. I did the same thing for my boys and only told them I do not want to see those quilts underneath them when they change their oil! Ha! Your finishes you guys are awesome! I did a flat fold and it was so difficult for me that I said never again! Ugh!
Yes, I’d love to have a stitch shop!
Congrats on Purchase college, I know she’s so excited!

I would not want to own a retail shop. I'm retired from teaching and I love having time to do what I want--stitch, garden, read, spend time with my grandkids. I would not want the financial worry or all the paperwork. However, I wish there was one closer than 6 hours away so I could go spend time and money at it:}. Enjoy every little thing about this joyous time in your daughter's life, Jen. I know it's so busy, but it's such a special time. See you when we see you! Happy stitching in the meantime.

Great video ladies! Love your flatfolds, Jennifer! I love cross stitching and quilting but have no desire to own a shop. I don’t think it’s enjoyable anymore when you own because of so many things that have to be done before you actually can stitch/sew. I don’t think my personality could handle the stress. But I wouldn’t mind working in one a day a week😁

I stitched Two Shall be as One. One of the marriages lasted, the other didn’t. Flowers in the Springtime by Bent Creek brings back sad memories. I had it framed so nicely for my sister’s step sons. It was one of my favorites ever. I never heard squat from the couple. My sister asked her about it and got the reply ‘I think I remember a picture but didn’t know where she put it. They later divorced. They didn’t even appreciate at all.
I used to daydream of having a shop but at 77 I no longer dream of it. Thank y’all for your videos .

I would never open a business. Except that isn't true. I did start a traveling tea party business when my mom got alzheimers and had to move in with us so that stopped. I also worked in a fabric department on Saturdays and loved that. But I have dreamed of opening a bookstore out of my house many times. I am just glad to be retired.

I so enjoyed seeing your finishes and current wips, all so beautiful. Your little Shephard's Bush bag turned out so cute. I loved seeing your wedding pictures at the beginning as they are so sweet - and no, you've hardly aged or changed. I would jump at the chance to own a cross stitch store as that would be so much fun and our only cross stitch store in our city just closed as the owner sold her building and retired. Unfortunately, I couldn't afford to buy it at this time in my life, but wow, what a great missed opportunity. Thank you for another wonderful video and it was so nice to have a great stitching visit with you.

I would probably prefer to work in a needlework shop rather than own at this point in my life. I always thought I would want to own a bakery - but after 10 years of doing alterations, I decided that anything I HAD to do, even if it was something I loved, took a lot of the fun out of it.

The Keepsake calendar is still around. I just received one. I bought it last year and now I get it every year as a preview. Frosted Pumpkin is a US company. I would love to open a shop. The nearest one is over 3 hours away and I am near the Georgia border and there is none in that area either.

I would love to open a cross stitch shop! I live in a pretty small town and I am outside it more in the country, so I do not think it would work there. I loved seeing all of the wedding cross stitch patterns. I have actually quilted both of my boys quilts for their wedding. I used their wedding colors and put their first names and the year of the wedding on the back. Unfortunately, my oldest is going through a divorce now. I am definitely interested in the retreat! I will get that filled out today for the wait list. Great seeing you both!

At this time in my life I would not want the responsibility nor the restraints of owning a cross stitch shop. My husband & I are retired & our grandkids live states away from us so we travel to be with them quite a lot. I owned a Christian Bookstore for many years so I know the stress of owning your own business. Yes there was fun in meeting people but there is a side of business that can really wear you down.

To keep the thread laying flat and not twisting, railroading is when you put your needle between the two floss threads as you put your needle through your fabric. I would never want to open a store of any kind. I think its a hard life with long hours. I am retired and just want to reap the benefits... lol.

I live in Phoenix and while I apparently live about 40 minutes from the best cross stitch shop on earth, according to some floss tubers, there isn't one in my area. I would open a quilt/cross stitch shop. It would have two entrances...one stitching and one quilting, but an open doorway between the two so it's like one shop. I would carry the full lines of certain quilt fabric designers and all the floss I could fit in the store. No specialization. When I can't sleep, I think about it and imagine where I'd put things or what I'd carry, etc. Always fall asleep pretty quickly. But I'd have to be about 50 years younger. BTW, I did make a 1st Christmas ornament for my great-granddaughter last year. Hope the hospital visit goes well and is over quickly.

So enjoy your flosstube! Carol, I'm glad you received the snowman pattern. Jen, I especially enjoyed your flatfold. I have made 2, but I need more practice on those. I don't think I would want my own needlework shop at this time as I have some family responsibilities that require a moment's notice to be taken care of. My 1st job was at a Woolworth's, and I loved being scheduled for the needlework department. Thanks again for an entertaining flosstube!

Most of the shop owners I know have dedicated their lives to their shops. I think I would get bogged down in paperwork. If I could order, sell and stitch and have someone else make beautiful displays and do the books, maybe. I just am not sure I would want to be tied to a place all those hours, plus my grandkids are already 14 hours away and we don't get time to travel to see them enough. But I'd love meeting fellow stitchers. Tough call!

One question for Carol....how did you not have to stop the video and go to the bathroom? LOL. I just read a headline about a lady in Australia that was stranded and survived on a bottle of wine and tootsie pops; for some reason I thought of you (j/k, you know I love you). I almost did. When I was in my twenties, the LNS in my hometown was for sale. My parents, who were both accountants, didn't feel that it was the kind of thing they could back financially. I have never wanted to own a cross stitch shop. I thought about a quilt shop at one point, not seriously. I did want to buy the local 5 and 10 cent store when it closed. I tried to talk my husband into it, to no avail. They sold yarn, crochet threads and DMC floss, and the old time fabric, stamped type, etc., and they usual candy, makeup, houseware type of things. Fun to remember.

That would have been fun Linda! We just went to an old pharmacy/soda fountain on our trip to my niece’s wedding and I think it would be neat to own a place like that.

Jennifer, I am working on Snow Angels. I got it from a library book called “Holiday Memories “ which I haven’t been able to locate since we moved to another town. I saw it online but only one copy that was pulled from a publication so if you want it well… I may stop back by that library sometime soon and look for it again.

I forgot to respond to your last video about the wedding stitching. I did use to do wedding stitches for gifts. I hate to admit it, but since I have gotten back into cross stitch, my oldest WIP is a wedding pattern I had started for my cousin back in 1992! I never completed it and I still have it! His kids are now in college and he has since gotten divorced! So I have taken that WIP and am now working on it for my son's wedding in Oct (I hope that is not bad luck, lol)

Well my favorite red for Christmas is by classic color works and it’s Ribbon red! DMC has a gorgeous variegated red I thinks it’s 115 maybe? It’s more of a garnet in color but it is lovely❤ railroading is placing the needle inbetween the two threads on the bottom leg of your stitch before you go down in the fabric while your needle is still on the top , then repeating for the top leg of your stitch. I railroad every stitch of any white I ever make! It is a lot but oh so lovely when done!love all you do ladies and always the quilts! Blessings!

I don’t want to own a shop but would love to work in a store now that I’m retired. I missed your last flosstube because I was preparing for and attending my sons wedding. I stitched a ring bearers pillow, a band for the flower girl basket, and a cover for the wedding bouquet. I also gave the couple a sampler with their names and wedding date.

I would love to open a shop, have dreamed about it and if I hit the lottery, I would. Always thought it would be great to have a coffee shop attached that did coffees, teas and sandwiches so people could come and spend the day stitching. My friend had a shop in AR and it was a lot of work, she sold it when she decided to become a designer in beading. So bend to market many times.

Boy, owning a shop would be so rewarding & fun on many levels, but it would become such a commitment. It would really become your LIFE. Being retired, we want to be able to jump in the car & take a long weekend. (Or continue our Winter’s in FL). Wouldn’t be able to do that if you had a shop. I am so sorry to hear of Diana’s passing….breaks my heart

Carol I am with you. I have seriously considered opening a shop and have been a small business owner so have a pretty good idea what would be involved. We lived in the Charlotte area and were there when the Stitch and Frame shop was for sale. I wanted to buy it in the worst way but we were in the middle of moving to Carmel. I love love love your flosstube. You both make me smile and feel like I know someone now that we are in the Indy area.

I’m sure someone has already told you, but railroading is when you put the needle between the two strands of floss as you put the needle back through the fabric. Helps straighten the floss and it becomes a habit the more you do it so not as time consuming as it sounds. If that makes any sense.

I love the Happy Hour book! I wore my first copy out and my best friend bought me a new copy. I love all the patterns in it. I also love your Moda Love quilt. I've made that quilt in several sizes and it's also a favorite. I would love to own a shop, but the insurance and work schedule keeps me from doing it.

Love the finishes! I am a former quilting and embroidery shop owner for 14 years. The joys of the venture: meeting great people at the shop, shows and starting a quilting guild as well as seeing all of the new products and planning how to introduce them. Also, planning annual shows in the store and bi-annual ones with the guild. Being your own boss is a bonus as well. The drawbacks: being tied to the shop 6 days a week, not having the time to try all of the new patterns, etc., paperwork, taxes, insurance, upkeep of shop, being aware of where unwise choices can take you, lack of social life outside of the business because of time constraints. 99% of stocking, ordering and sample making is done outside of store hours. That being said, I loved it! Unfortunately, there came a time when the shop couldn't be my sole source of income and I went back to working for someone else. If there is a second income in the family to fall back on in an emergency then I think it's a great option. Congrats to The Princess! Oh, I love those purple towels...

If I didn't have to worry about the books, I would have a quilt and crosstitch shop. It would be a blast to go to work and stitch or sew or both and have fun doing it with other people..
It's always a an arrow through the heart when some in the community dies, please send along my heartfelt sympathy to the family for me. And don't worry about the gray hairs ladies if you've lived right you have earn them like badges, so wear them proudly. I know I do..
