I would not pre-cook and then pressure cook the meat and egg. This over-cooking depletes a lot of the B vitamins and the A, D, E, K in the yolk.. Overcooking the yolks also oxidizes the fatty acids. Skip the frying of the meat and then add the eggs at the very end to the hot mix which is more than enough cooking for them. I also think you have too high a veggie: meat ratio. No canid evolved to eat this much vegetation. But, all in all, great that you cook for your dogs and that you, as a veterinarian are promoting fresh food for dogs vs. kibble. That is a very rare thing among veterinarians who usually try to gaslight their clients into believing that they should be feeding Science Diet (one of the worst mixtures of toxic garbage anyone can feed their dog). Hi there. That is a good point about lightly cooking. My recipes for cats add minimal carbs, but I do add them to my canine diets. They really don't need an entirely carnivorous diet as cats do, and we need to think about our carbon footprint when it comes to our pets as well. They can thrive on added anti-oxidant-rich veggies and healthy fiber as well. Thank you for your valuable insights!
I totally agree with your comments, plus she did not add organ meat, she could have crushed the egg shells for calcium. I have a puppy, so I use brown rice for carbs. I add blueberries frozen at the time if feeding to help her teething pain
I agree. We feed raw completely and zero synthetic vitamins. Cooking food is quite destructive unless the dog is too old, sick, etc to eat raw. Bone broth is cooked and added through their day. Dogs need bones and real organs. We use a holistic vet.

So I'm a new subscriber I ordered some canine vet blend and the fish oil also the recipe looks similar to what I've been giving him so I looked forward to seeing good results with your products. I put chicken gizzarards & livers in it. I also put flax seed and pumpkin and powdered egg shells that I powder using a coffee grider, in my dogs food too.

I cook very low carb for my dog and was able to greatly reduce the amount and severity of seizures as well as reduce her seizure meds by 2/3. Love your videos and how you share your expertise. Thanks for sharing!

Dogs do not need MCT oil to produce energy when eating a species appropriate, high protein, moderate to low fat diet. They produce the amount of glucose they need for daily metabolism via gluconeogenesis from protein. The major fats in a wolf diet are from wild ungulate prey so very low Medium Chain Fatty Acids. MCT oil blends contain mainly coconut oil and palm kernel oil, two very unnatural components of the ancestral, canid diet. Also, I should point out that Palm Kernel Oil results from environmentally destructive practices (like plantations of palm from slash and burn rain forest destruction) so that stuff definitely definitely not in line with your carbon footprint concerns with pet feeding. Not trying to be negative just interested in facts.@@HolisticVet

I usually use a 6 quart pot but I did order an 8 quart pot to make larger batches that have more space occupying veggies like broccoli.
Feeding a dog should be 80%muscle meat 10% organs 10%vegetables..adding on top 2 times a week rice 3 eggs a week..another great add on 3 times a week pure green tripe it will clean all bacterias in gut..being a veterinarian is one thing and being a pet nutritious is completely different completely different😊

This recipe was developed with the help of a PhD animal nutritionist who is a consultant for zoos worldwide. Cats are obligate carnivores. Dogs are facultative carnivores. You must adhere strictly to a carnivore diet with cats. Dogs can use other energy sources efficiently and be healthy. For the sake of our planet we have to feed pets what they need, and what is essential. If they can utilize other energy sources and their protein requirement is satisfied, why would we worsen their carbon footprint? We have to feed our pets for health while also being aware of decreasing their carbon footprint.

My dogs are super picky about vegetables and won't eat them if they can see them, can you chop the veggies up really fine in a Ninja and add them like that?
I have 2 Papillons. I have to snip up their veggies (especially green beans) with kitchen shears. The Border Collie and chihuahua eat everything! But absolutely, puree all day!

No, but you could use them as the mixed vegetable in the Holistic Vet Blend Regular Blend recipe (12 ounces) and 12 ounces of greens.
What is a serving size for a Labrador? Most recipes I see say 1.5cups in morning and at night is that true for this recipe as well?

Here's our feeding guide for dogs:
5 - 10 lbs dog: 1/2 - 1 cup/day
11 - 25 lbs dog: 1 - 3 cups/day
26 - 50 lbs dog: 3 - 5 cups/day
51 - 75 lbs dog: 5 - 7 cups/day
75 - 100 lbs dog: 7 - 10 cups/day
over 100 lbs: consult your veterinarian.

I have a female lab and she's a tad overweight last time at the vet she weighed 85 I think she needs to loose at least 10 lbs she is spayed doesn't get to get as much exercise since I'm disabled and her Dad is more of a recliner potato since retired.
I feed her my homemade recipes @ 1 1/2 C twice a day and she still hasn't lost much weight yet I've been doing this for about 4 months.
What are you feeding yours and how is he or she doing in weight? Just went to the vet and she weighs 81.7 lbs so she has lost some. Still a little over weight though.

Hi - every "vet approved" video I have watched has a great recipe, however, they also promote their own supplement for the dog. Are these supplements really necessary if you're feeding a whole food ancestrally appropriate dog diet? We have a new almost 12 week old black Lab and want to feed her a natural whole diet. We don't want to keep her on the kibble that the breeder used (Diamond Naturals). Thanks in advance.
Hello, the supplements provide our furry family the best nutrition possible. It is loaded with trace minerals, vitamins, calcium, and dehydrated organ meat. I developed this formula during the pet food recall in 2007 and started out with all raw organ meats. Eventually, I brought in grass-fed beef organ meat from New Zealand, which is easier for me to work with. The premix is made in a human-grade facility and all fit for human consumption. And I am a veterinarian :)
Like your recipe, but wouldn't pressure cook. That's what they do with the commercial dog food. I will gently cook or slow cook.

Great recipe I have started making meals for my dog because she’s allergic to so many things I could no longer feed her kibble. I love the recipe unfortunately she’s allergic to chicken and sweet potatoes
There are so many other options. You can feed turkey and another carbohydrate. Did you take a look at the cookbook?
i have the same problem with my dog and since i switched her diet to home cooked she lost so much weight
I have 6 dogs! 4 adults and 2 pups. That’s a lot of cooking!

My dog can’t have salmon oil or any thing beef related. Are there other supplements I could add instead?
I'm on the Mediterranean diet and try to increase my Omega 3s. Mackerel is actually higher (canned mackerel is also cheap), krill oil (a lot less sustainable), sardines, shrimp (little frozen shrimp might work). HTH. I think her recipes are adaptable to your dog (turkey, chicken, even rabbit).
You can use DHA from algae.
Wonderful and informative video. Should I give additional supplements to my 9 lbs maltese while feeding him this recipe? He currently has a ear infection, which I want to treat naturally, what do you recommend for his ear infection and additional supplements?

Unless your pet has a specific problem you should not have to add anything else. I would recommend a holistic vet that can examine your pet and guide you. You can find one at www.ahvma.org. Remember, changing to a minimally processed diet will help most allergies.
@@HolisticVet Not everyone has the luxury of access to a Holistic Vet. I am currently living in Spain and have been unable to find one. The Vet that I do have of course goes against my knowledge and desire to treat and feed Holistically and will only address symptoms instead of finding the causes. Extremely frustrating!!!
Is it okay to use frozen pkg veg and blueberries that is listed in your cookbook organic if available? And is giving them a fruit melody okay it has blueberries, strawberries and raspberries? TIA
I use frozen organic and fresh vegetables. I also swap up with blueberries or a apple with a recipe similar to this. I don't use rice too many carbs since my dog trends on the heavy side. Lol. Which is one reason I quit Comercial foods. Raspberries are good too but I feed them to mine with yougart or just let her snack on a handfull. Don't forget the vitamins power she offers, saves so much time.
@@laurie8238 thanks Laurie for your response. My fur baby is a little on the heavy side too. I use a half a cup of Quinoa but Im probably going to start leaving that out. I know sweet potato are very good for them but have quite a bit a carbs so she probably gets enough from that. I'm still learning. Only been doing this about 3 months now. I can see such a big difference in her coat she is so shiny and soft. I get so many compliments when I take her to the stores with me. She had shed so badly her being a Lab they are horrible shedders. All those supplements I was buying and giving her what a waste of money all I needed to do is feed her good homemade food. Can't believe what's in that kibble. I did order a jar of her canine powder.
You can absolutely use frozen.
What do you do if a senior dog can’t have any fat ?
I would use lean Turkey or chicken. Avoid beef, especially if it is not grass fed. Healthy fat is very important.
Is this recipe ok for a 6 month old puppy?
I would recommend large-breed puppy food for giant breeds but this is fine for other puppies.
Can you feed only this without kibble?
What about their teeth? What do you feed to clean them? Or just brush their teeth?
What about a 125 lb dog?
Kibble does not prevent tartar. It has more carbs and can actually promote tartar! Think hard candy. It's mostly carbs/sugar and it promotes tartar. It's best if you can brush and find suitable options for chewing.

We recommend large breed puppies (Labrador size or greater) be fed large breed puppy food until 8 months of age as they need to grow at a more controlled rate. Toy, small, and medium-sized breeds may begin the diet at 4 months of age.

Protein ratio should be higher than veggie and carbohydrate ratios.
The most important thing is that there is enough quality protein. I feed my cats as carnivores but my dogs eat vegetables and carbohydrates with the benefits of added antioxidants, fiber, and other beneficial nutrients. We need to think about our pet's carbon footprint too. It's not necessary for dogs to receive such a high amount of protein. They have adapted and evolved beside us to digest carbohydrates as well.
Confused about the amount of food to feed daily in your cookbook. It says for a 75 to 100 lb dog you would feed 7 - 10 cups - is that a DAY? It just seems like a LOT of food.
You are correct. That is the recommended caloric requirement. But most dogs do not need that much as they are not working dogs or in need of that many calories for maintenance.
It’s too much 2cups in the morning and 2 in the afternoon that it peas are not good for dogs or sweet potatoes .
I’ve never seen “white” sweet potatoes??
Sweet potatoes are white. Yams are yellow. And there are also red garnet yams. Most people call all of them sweet potatoes. ( I work in a grocery store.)

Cooking the raw meat like that doesn't allow for skimming off the fat. All that fat could cause pancreatitis.
Hi, I'm using 80% lean meat in my recipes.
I am not sure what kind of white sweet potato that is or is that normal yellow potato ? And why are you over cooking everything you just cooked all the minerals and nutrients out the food , and where is the organ meat like liver and hearts or gizzards ? This food is lacking everything that keeps your dog's diet balanced and nutritious, vegetables should be steamed or given raw and definitely not so much it should be just a add on to the meat, sweet potato can cause diabetes in dogs if given to much , I have been cooking dogfood for years and made a lot of mistakes in the beginning but you learn as you go and you should really discuss your cooking with a veterinarian , because this is not a healthy meal for a dog
Hi Ramona. In my cookbook there are recipes for raw feeding, Instant Pot recipes, and crock pot recipes. Raw does not work for everyone. And certainly, providing options for those that prefer to cook are better than feeding processed commercial dog food. All premix nutrients are added when the recipe is cooled (after the meat and vegetables are cooked) so they are not heated (taurine, calcium, trace minerals, vitamins). I developed this formula during the pet food recall in 2007 and started out with all raw organ meats.
