  • Here's the most compact and efficient hot water system for an overland truck. We have built the best onboard water system for any 4x4 or van. We can pump water from a river, we have drinkable water, and we also have hot water. All that with only 1 pump, 1 water filter, 1 water heater, and 1 exchanger.

    Being from Canada , we have electric heating pads on all our tanks to stop them from freezing .
    They work down to -5 ish after that the pipes will start to freeze when not in use .
    We don"t do much mid winter camping , but it does extend our season .

      We will test this option and see how it goes 👍

    Add the 12volt stick on heater blankets that turn on automatically when temperature gets below 52 degrees I also set it up on a switch so I could override the sensor if I want to hope this help’s I got them on Amazon

    Well thought out system like all your projects. Good to see your children. We are old school campers because I’m cheap, and I have a long suffering wife of 54 years.

    Great explanation and very interesting. You mentioned air lines in wheel arch is this in all wheel arches as i am considering this option? Perhaps you could do a feature on it thanks

      Thanks! We have water hose connector under one rear wheel arch and compressor hose socket under the other rear wheel arch. Very convenient 👍🏼

    Against freezing of the water, you could put in a aquarium-resistance that kicks in at 0 degrees with a thermostat. Don't heat the water to much up, otherwise you are going to create bacteria. I don't know if 12-volt versions exist of those resistances. Happy Land Rovering, David

    • @offtrackfamily
      @offtrackfamily  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      This solution was already thought and talked with tanks’ craftsman but unfortunately isn’t viable because of their size and shape.

    • @DavidMSA
      @DavidMSA 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Then maybe a circulation-pump and resistance outside the thank that kick in at 0 degrees... Best Regards, David

    Hi, thanks for sharing ! I like that system, very similar as you said to The Road Chose Me. One question I have, as your water tanks are outside, how cold of an environment can you go before they would freeze, and water system no longer works? Not sure you (or I!) are ever planning on going to such a cold environment but overnight temps can get pretty low. Thank you !

    • @offtrackfamily
      @offtrackfamily  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Being in Switzerland temps get pretty low at night and easily go under 0 degrees celsius. During a weekend out we can do without water but for our 1 year road trip in North America, it’ll a be different as living on the road. We will test all the system this winter 👍🏼

    🤩💯enjoy from start to end and the kids too 😊Truly a well-studied and functional setup, very good at having studied it like this, out of curiosity, how often do you empty the tanks or how long does the water stay in the tanks? Do you have a system for counting the liters of water for the filter or do you go "by eye" (maybe there is something that changes color when the filter needs to be replaced)? Placing the external socket in the rear wheel arch is convenient, but do you have a protection system or cover for mud or stones? I saw the Egon system which is a dream but also a sheik to buy!!! Unfortunately, due to the work I do, I can't turn as much as I would like, so my setup is very basic: tap adapter plus quick inlet high pressure spiral hose, filter on the end of the hose, food grade tank + roadrunner tank on the floor (I had a lifesaver but it was "taken" from me when I was sleeping, it was hooked to the outside and the chain was cut) plus marine type pumps and outlet filter, every time I return I empty the tanks and load them before leaving with the quantity needed, i.e. 4 drinkable liters + 6 for washing and extras, all multiplied by the number of people (max 2) and days we are away. economical 12 v pump to take a shower and possibly rinse the dishes or wash the side view mirrors, license plate and headlights (because I have already received a fine for dirty license plate or headlights)

      @offtrackfamily  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Glad you enjoy our new water system. Not sure yet how we know when we need to replace filter. The exterior socket is very convenient to use, we have a silicon cover to protect it when not in use. You’re very organised for your water 👏🏼 we’re not that organised ;) but we did drain the tank when back home and never left water inside after a weekend out. We will certainly continue to do the same way.

    There are 12v and low wattage 240v immersion heaters available, a simple thermostatically controlled system would stop freezing, though a little insulation would be a good idea too. As David says, minimum temperatures to stop bacteria problems.

    • @offtrackfamily
      @offtrackfamily  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Immersion heaters were the plan when manufacturing the tanks but because of their shape it wasn’t an efficient solution. Insulation would be necessary but not great for off-road.

    • @alessandroconcas
      @alessandroconcas 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@offtrackfamily insulation for be good need to be external but need protection because offroad so another shiel and so on the weight increase and reduce the height and capacity of offloading and so on... a lot of pro and cons to consider to make heating system

    Thanks for sharing. Could you tell a bit more about the hot water part and it's components.
    Is the diesel water heater only connected to the heat exchanger (no expansion tank in the coolant side or relief valve in the hot water side?). Can it also be used to heat the engine during winter conditions?
    What is the coolant volume in the hot water system?
    Thanks 👍

    Why couldn't you drink the water in the previous system?

    • @offtrackfamily
      @offtrackfamily  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      We didn’t have any filtration and weren’t very cautious on where we were filling it. Was easier for us to buy water on the road rather than worry about what water we’d put in there.

  • @gordonbarclay6106
    @gordonbarclay6106 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Why metal and not plastic, as the metal tanks look galvanised to withstand rust and corrosion, you may experience the water having a zinc taste to it although it will still be ok to drink..
