The story of cats are liquid is a never ending cat and mouse chase. On the outside it looks like an innocent cute game, but as it progresses it just gets more intriguing, scary and depressing and with each ending it always makes you ponder. “What’s next?”
@@SuperPhantomUser hear me out on my theory, What if lumi is a hikikomori (a person who shuts themselves in their parents or their own homes for long periods of time ranging about 2 or more years) and the “friend” who died was actually their SISTER, (I’ll explain later) and the entirety of cats are liquid is just “lumi” dreaming and the PERSON who is dreaming is looking at themselves as lumi since they don’t want to forget the last gift the sister gave. And the purple one is actually a built up version of lumi’s feelings manifesting into a being who wants to help lumi, meanwhile a weird being [the cat that the person “plays” as] is actually a built up of her terrible feelings who’s main goal is to eternally trap the person into a never waking up state, [coma] so when lumi finally says she wants to be in a better place, the monster [lumi] kills her (or traps her in coma) so she cant escape. But once that’s finally done, the monster starts to slip up explaining the neon rooms as the monster getting weaker as its goal is “achieved”. The purple one has good intentions but they won’t be as much help as the person needs to learn to cope. The “friend” in their dreams is just a part of the persons mind trying to remeber but the monster is trying to convince the person they are an enemy. Until they bring up the cat. The person slowly starts to remember but doesn’t wanna leave yet so the monster initiates a complete reset.
When I first found out about this game, I thought that it was a meme game, because 'cats are liquid' in itself is quite a funny statement. But I was really shocked to see the story of this game as I played through it. I never knew that this game could have so much deapth in it.
The ending of ALITS is just... scary for me, watching her just instead of going through the exit, and accepting her friend's death, she just doesn't, she resets everything by killing herself, is just so intriguing to me.
Im sure someone else has said it here, but you can find the purple cat several times in the last world of ALITS, I think even possibly in the second to last level. They are kinda hidden, as they are in ABP. i distinctly remember one being up on a tower thats completely optional to climb. Anyways, that just makes the ending even sadder, if purple cat (possible parent) was there to watch lumi game end herself. Purple cat may be found outside of the last world as well but I’m not sure Something interesting is that in the neon rooms the gravitation clouds are purple (the ones that follow lumi when you are close) I think this symbolizes purples attempt to reach out in physical ways of comfort because they cannot use words to comfort lumi. However this affection is just considered an “obstacle” for lumi to get around.
Purple is found in many worlds, I think there's a total of 4 or 5 times that you can see them outside of world 9. I also like your idea that Purple's trying to reach out to Lumi with the hug clouds, gives them a whole new meaning
@@MaximRodin-s9u is this in ALitS or ABP? Edit: ALitS, I went through all of them and apparently you get an achievement when you find all of the Purples
Green:shock(no mouth, acting different, making platforms as if it hasn't processed there's no ground) Lumi:Denial and maybe bargaining(locked herself up in this world, smiling face, ignores everything else) Red:anger(grumpy face, bouncing off like it's shoving away, parting gift is active when hurt) Blue:depression(sad face, acting glum, freezing time like it's just stuck that way, parting gift is active when watery like tears) ???(maybe purple? Or companion?):acceptance. It's a decent match for the stages of grief.
I didn't think Green could show shock instead of calmness, thinking of their ability to make things appear and disappear as if they hadn't proceseed it yet is very different.
I like this comparison a lot! Especially Purple being acceptance, as they are trying to get Lumi to escape the loop and accept the truth. Although I wonder which would be bargaining... maybe the Companion?
I've got a theory about why all orange things hurt Lumi. Maybe the dead friend was an orange cat and all orange things are like memories of their dead friend. And when Lumi or the other cats touch something orange, it hurts because the death of their friend was a traumatic event. That could also explain why they are somehow alive since they are like an extension of the dead friend. And that could also explain why the Companion is immune to everything orange. Maybe the purple one wanted to show to Lumi that, these orange things can be painful, but you can move on and get out of there. Let me know what you think. Edit: Thanks for the likes!
my theory about the glitches in ABP: Lumi causes the glitches herself whenever she remembers she eventually needs to leave in order to forget the pain, thus forgetting that she needs to move on.
@@SuperPhantomUser What if the glitches don't represent anything, just like actual glitches? I know this game has a lot of lore, but sometimes we just have to stop trying to find meanings to everyone and everything.
@user-me2zb1bz3u the problem is that glitches are still an important part of the game, it's a little bit the reason for the distance of lumi and the other cats, so even if it was only glitches, it's still important and it can be good to theorize about it
Stop blaming Green for not giving the cat a gift! They were the first one to leave, and the other cats saw Lumi get sad and decided to give her a gift before leaving.
Hey there! Playtester of liquid cats, Sami here. Im extremely happy that you made this video. Although i already played the games i just didnt feel like having to go through all that again just for lore- So yes im extremely thankful (mostly cuz im lazy)
the story of this game is grim and yet it's some of the best writing I have ever seen. the gameplay is so unique and the lore is intriguing. This is has got to be one of the best games of all time.
I have to agree with all of these. It's very well-written (especially ALITS) The gameplay itself is similar to other platformers, but the way it's organized and the unique, clean aesthetic makes it stand out
I wouldn't say best game of all time, but the lore and narration... It's one of the best I've seen so far, it might be the only game that nearly stole a tear from my eyes honestly. I'll definitely recommend it.
Wait I never noticed but the Companion's abilities could be a paralell to the friends' abilities. Stopping time to avoid obsticles is Blue's ability while "jumping" is essentially Red's ability. None of cats can really boost, they can only turn into liquid form to be faster. However the entirety of what Companion can do, making platforms appear with trigger mechanisms is very similar to Green's ability (at least to me). Also Green is defenetly special in some way because they look different from the others (they have no mouth or tail) and the dialouge for them is different.
1) The Companion's abilities parallel to the friends' is something that other members of the LQS Discord server have noticed as well (great job for noticing that btw) and they connect the boost to Green since Green is the only other cat besides Lumi where turning to liquid is a big part of their ability 2) Green is definitely different from Red and Blue, in the way they treat Lumi in 7-1 and how their dialogue is different when they are "fixed"
@@SuperPhantomUser Well I was in the discord for a while as well but I either left or got kicked cuz of inactivity (can't remember). But before I joined I already theorised stuff, in fact it was the reason I did join because I wanted to talk about lore. I only noticed the ability thing now tho because of the way the video was put togerher. Hmm also about Green, I remember someone (also on discord) theorised that they might be the dead friend. It would make sense why they're different.
THANK YOU! I thought I was the only person who actually understood the lore! This video also made realize I missed some things aswell! But I also want to address some things, the companion level pack takes place directly before world 4, lumi doesn’t remember anything anything from abp. Alits is a huge loop. After she kills herself in the final room, she goes through the reset. After it’s complete, her memory is wiped and she’s transported to the first room where everything unfolds the exact same pretty much (this is why she said the orange triangle is familiar) I wonder how the companion is in abp? (LQS stated it was before world 4, the companion level pack) also, “but I gave my cat to you” made me lose braincells
You're welcome, always glad to help people out! Also, LQS explicitly stated it takes place before world 4 in ALITS? (because if they just said "it takes place before world 4" when only ALITS was out, the words could be twisted to mean world 3 in ABP. However, if LQS _did_ explicitly state it was before world 4 in ALITS, then that raises a bunch of questions about how the Companion is in ABP, as you said). Also, it is shown that ALITS is a loop, but I think that things change between each loop - for example, I don't think that the Companion Pack is part of the ALITS loop. I think it only happened one time, and the Companion (which Purple sent) was only there in one or a few of the loops.
@@SuperPhantomUser Yeah! That’s why I said pretty much the same I think there would be some differences such as the neon rooms and like you said the companion. Also, I found where LQS said that companion takes place just before world 4, it’s in a video of someone playing cats are liquid (I think it was katwtfynn? I forgot how to spell it) LQS commented that the reset takes place before/after the main game, companion takes place just before world 4 but like I previously said, how could the companion be in abp? We know the one in alits is a living being so maybe the one in abp is only a tool?
I hold these two games dear to my heart because I love little indie games you could beat in a day but have so much deepened lore and meaning to them. Especially when they have micro games of the other characters' POV.
When I first saw the "I gave my cat to you" line my brain short-circuited too but the first theory that came into my head was that maybe since they are god-like entities (creating/altering worlds, resetting time, etc) maybe they're not cats but only possessing them, and the friends gave her lumi as a gift (if lumi is the cat's name not the character/entity's name). That would be really confusing but nobody's mentioned it (that I an tell) and it's some food for thought
New theory about what owner means that I just need to get down: it is said that her owner locked her in those rooms. The owner could be whatever controls her emotions. Cat could equal emotion/the power to control emotion. That would also make the title make sense. At first, the friend and her death controlled Lumi’s emotions. But then, Lumi had the option to take control of her emotions. She didn’t. But she is the owner, the one controlling her emotions. She(the dead cat) was the owner(one controlling Lumi’s emotions) and gave her cat(emotions/control over emotions) to Lumi, who is now the owner. The purple one could also be Lumi farther in the loop trying to get her past self out, but can’t. The square could be her attempt to make her face her situation
I think these games represent depression and what it is like to always feel worthless. It sounds sad but is true. Friendship, betrayal, and trust are also communicated through the games.
I know its really late but i just finished both games, theorized a little, but the thing its supposed to rrpresent is disconnection from reality and something else depressing, it was in the description of the game when i downloaded it
something I noticed: World 12 has ten levels, which is not enough to fit each world into a corresponding level. But, I notice that world 7 and 8 are the ones left behind to not have their own level. And both those worlds are the only two worlds to have some sort of friend, helper, or companion to help you out. Idk what implications this might have but its cool that i noticed it
I like to think that they were excluded because Lumi couldn't have had her friends help her in World 7 (because they already left), and Purple took away the Companion for good after World 8
It doesn't make sense. World 7 was left out because it involves friends, which already left, but why did the dev leave out World 8, which does have an ability, but not World 1, with nothing special to it?
theory for the "i gave you my cat" line: the dead friend is actually referring to the purple one when saying this. the dead friend somehow manifested the purple one into existence to try to help lumi through her grief and eventually let her escape.
Good point, but when the dead friend mentions the cat they gave, Lumi says "..." while when they mention Purple later on in The Reset, Lumi perks up and tries to stop them. It seems unlikely they are the same
In my opinion, Purple is the dead friend, and that cat they gave isn't an actual cat, but the Companion, which is a pet, as you showed in your video. "Cat" is used as a substitute here. I know you debunked this theory, but I un-debunked it, I just can't remember where I put my comment about this
Here are some of my headcanons for the story, I wouldn't call these theories since I don't have much proof for them, but I think they could make sense: Firstly, I think that the world that Lumi and RGB created is a manifestation of their minds, what I mean by that is that after their friend died, all the thoughts and emotions Lumi and RGB had, manifested to create the world in the game. This brings me onto my second headcanon, you know how all the cats are a different colour? I think the dead friend was orange, and since this world is a manifestation of Lumi's and RGB's thought's, the grief and sorrow they felt when Orange died manifested to create the orange obstacles in the game, this would explain why the orange things hurt them, since their a manifestation of all the pain they felt from Orange's death. This would also explain why the Companion isn't hurt by the orange obstacles, the Companion was never Orange's friend so it never felt any grief becuase of her death, therefore it's unaffected by orange obstacles. Now onto the purple one, I think that Purple used to be friends with the other cats, and you know how in the ABP editor, the little face for Purple looks glitched, almost as if it were corrupted. I think that just like Lumi, Purple had a very hard time moving on from Orange's death. And eventually all the grief she felt caused them to become corrupted, and the corruption may have caused Purple to hurt Lumi and RGB in some way, which could have caused their friendship to fall apart, this would explain why in one of the neon rooms, Lumi's friends call Purple "you know who" almost as if they don't even want to mention their name, and this corruption also explains the glitch in ABP, I think the glitch could represent Lumi slowly becoming corrupted too becuase of how hard it is for her to move on. So I think that Purple is trying so hard to help Lumi becuase she doesn't want her to go through the same fate, she doesn't want Lumi to become corrupted just like they did. Also I just wanted to say that this is a great video, it helped me understand the lore of this game more and I wouldn't have been able to create these headcanons without this video, so thanks!
Great headcanons! The color of the dead friend is never said, so them being orange like the obstacles is a really good idea. The falling out is also interesting, and if that were true then they would still be trying to make it up to the others with the Companion
I have a theory that Purple is the dead friend, and even though you debunked it, I debunked your debunking and I also have positive proof. I just don't remember where I put that comment.
@@estrela_denatal7613I think we will get it some day. If the dev doesn't make it, we fans will get together and make our own version. With our cool music
cats are liquid game makes me feel some different type of way. scared, excited, paranoid, happy at the same time. ive played this game 5 times in a row and I'm happy to say i think i got the lore. i also wish there were more people in cats r liquid fandom i hardly see any but i love this game so much
The Cats are Liquid lore is a bit complicated, but it is super emotional for those who understand it Also there aren't a lot of people in the community but if you want to find people then I suggest joining the Last Quarter Studios Discord server - I am on it and so are a lot of others who care about the game
One of the reasons I like CaL more than, for example, Nameless Cat is that there are no villains, no bad guys, no fighting involved. Red: good guy Green: good guy Blue: good guy Lumi: good guy, just gone a little crazy Purple: actually a good guy Dead Friend: IDK, but my theory is that they are actually Purple Companion: obviously a good guy, it is a good guy's pet
It's sad that so much suffering comes from when there is no one with malicious intent, but it's true that sometimes we're our own worst enemy, and it's definitely a strength of the game
I always thought that the purple one was the physical manifestation of Lumi's grief. its colour is the combination of red and blue, just like the two friends who left Lumi a "gift", and he appears more prominently the more upset Lumi is. and I think Dev once said that the purple one didn't exist in ABP, and yet supposedly he's the creator of the Companion, even though it appears first there. if the purple one is something that split off of Lumi when she became more immersed in her pain, then that could explain this I think.
I like the idea that Purple isn't real and only an emotional manifestation. Unfortunately, Lumi's friends and the Dead Friend both mention Purple, so I don't think that's likely. Also, Dev never said that Purple doesn't exist in ABP (I don't think so at least), just that you can't find them in the rooms.
Then why are they found in the Editor? Also, in W5R10 the friends say: "You are the only one who stayed" "Except..." "You know who." Purple stayed with Lumi in ALITS, that means they have existed somewhere else, too.
@@SuperPhantomUser We don't know if Purple exists in ABP, but maybe we can check the game files to find out. Because some guy on TH-cam checked the files to find out in which rooms there was a purple cat in the other game.
@@SuperPhantomUserEven though they mention Purple, they only do so in the context that "they are still here", which could mean they're saying the cat can't get away from Purple
I played this game when I was in middle school and am revisiting it in college. I relate a lot to how Lumi feels and am crying because I'm just so sad about it. I really would like a third game even though it doesn't sound like they're planning on it. To end it with her 'stuck' in a loop of her own creation makes sense because some people become prisoners to their grief and cannot move on, but it just makes me sad. I really want Lumi to escape. I want her to meet her friends again in the real world, or wherever they are right now, and I want them all to move on and find happiness again together. :( Edit: As someone professionally diagnosed with bpd, I honestly did see myself in Lumi (and the symptoms of bpd specifically) as I played but didn't dwell on them too much since sometimes I relate too many characters to it just because it's comforting to feel seen even if it's just a single behavior. But seeing that you believe that as well, I can say that I agree. 1. Her fear of abandonment / being abandoned in some way. Her friend died, and we can see through her conversation with the dead friend that she lashes out and blames the friend for 'leaving her' here, 'abandoning' her. The friend obviously replies that they can't be blamed for their death, and Lumi just says that she could have stayed home. In grief, but I think especially with bpd, sometimes it's hard to accept that life is just tragic sometimes. It was an accident. No one could forsee that she would die. But it's hard to just accept that reality because it feels so unfair. It _is_ unfair. Life is unfair. But who wants to scaly that? Sometimes it's easier to blame someone, even the person who died. Because you _do_ feel abandoned, even though it was not abandonment by choice. And to avoid those feelings, she goes through the extreme measures of living in a constant loop in a world that is ultimately bad for her and her recovery. Even though every time she will feel confused and hurt why she was locked in here, try so hard to get out, and feel panicked as she loses her abilities. It's not a happy loop at all. But at least... nothing is permanent. It can all be reset. And maybe, right now, that hurts her less than the irreversible reality that her friend is gone. Those other cats, whether they were all friends of the dead friend and put themselves in these worlds trying to cope, or if they were all separately dealing with grief from losing a loved one and became friends through that shared trauma meeting in these rooms, all left after they were 'fixed.' After they moved on. Because that's what they were supposed to do. But she can't move on. She can't leave but they won't stay. So has been, in a way, abandoned. They _could_ stay, technically. But it's not good for them, and they won't go down her path of self-destruction with her. So they leave, and she feels abandoned. Her extreme measures this time being, creating a whole new world that she traps herself in, erasing her memories, keeping herself in this painful loop where no progress or healing can take place. And now I'm realizing how long I'm going. I'll try to be more brief with the others 😿 Unstable, intense relationships: after the cats leave, after the Companion disappears, her initial reaction is intense anger from the hurt. She goes from loving her friends deeply, to feeling lost, listless, pointless without them, to feeling rage and lashing out and feeling that she can do things on her own now, she's _better off_ on her own. For the square, when it disappears, she goes from appreciating it and caring for it to 'hating' it and finding it selfish for never telling her anything to missing it intensely. Just like she probably misses her friends, deep down. Your emotions can change on others so quickly when you have bpd because your emotions are just so unregulated and can change so quickly, often out of your control unless you have trained yourself to control it or have gotten treatment to help control it. Rapid changes in self-identity: I feel that she doesn't know who she is anymore. This can be because of grief as well, but they aren't mutually exclusive. Constantly switching between states of matter, she is literally changing her identity. And mentally, I feel that she is lost in terms of identity. She was [dead friend]'s friend, but now they're gone, so who is she? She was the friend of the other cats, now who is she? She's alone, now she's the Companion's friend. Now the Companion is gone. She doesn't know who she is again. She might trap herself in this world because she doesn't know who she is anymore, so even if she left and went back into 'the real world,' she wouldn't even know how to act. At least in this world, she has an identity: the cat whose owner started acting weird one day and trapped her here, the cat that wants to get out of here. And even when she has that script to follow, sometimes she finds herself listless and feeling pointless anyways when the things she ties her identity to are gone, like her abilities and the Companion. Paranoia and loss of contact with reality: paranoid that her friends will hate her and feel that she doesn't appreciate them just because she needs time alone, also paranoid that they might be getting her to do something bad for her and not understand that (like when she felt paranoid about the world around her and red cat suggested she play in their world to distract herself). Paranoid about the world around her, which is why she can pick up that purple is watching her / there is something that isn't 'quite right' which is why she is uneasy in the first place. Since she's living in these fictional worlds and refusing to face the reality of her friend's death, you can easily see how she's lost contact with reality and refuses to confront it. Impulsive behavior: constantly putting herself in 'danger' and letting herself die over and over and over, even 'killing' herself at the end, just to prove that she can't die here. Putting herself through so many resets just because there are no consequences. It's not healthy. But it is comforting because it reinforces the fact that she can't die here. And in a world where 'death' has no consequences, you don't have to face the death of your friend. Suicidal behavior and self-harm: she kills herself at the end of every reset. She puts herself in harm's way every reset. Because she doesn't want to confront reality, she'd rather hurt herself and self sabotage every time she gets so close to moving on. Because she's survived it already. And, to her, doing it all over again will hurt, but it won't hurt as much as remembering who she lost and how she can never get them back. Especially when it's... _death_. It's not just that they fell out and she doesn't know how to repair the broken pieces. They're _dead_. There's nothing that can be done to get them back. Mood swings: after the Companion disappeared, she was immediately really hurt and angry. Just a room later, she was reminiscing and missing them and appreciating them. Ongoing feelings of emptiness: Especially after her friends disappear in ABP, and after she loses her abilities and the Companion in ALITS, she feels empty. I think she is chronically empty. I think she also chooses to reset every time because at least in the excitement and confusion of being trapped in 'a strange new place' and gaining new abilities, she can be distracted from the emptiness she feels. When she nears the end, she loses those things. And she cannot distract herself from the emptiness anymore, in fact it is emphasized by the hole they've now all left. So she resets to a time before she discovered and lost these things. Inappropriate, intense anger: I think with bpd, anger is really mixed in with hurt. She's so hurt her friends left her, and then becomes so angry she decides she doesn't need them and she'll make her own world without them. Even though it won't be as good. And she gets lost in the hurt and anger and emptiness. But she makes the world anyways. Her anger is intense to the Companion when they disappear, even though later she even acknowledges that her anger was inappropriate because all it did was try to help her. And it's pretty clear why it's inappropriate for her to be so intensely angry at her dead friend... for dying in an accident. But in the moment it doesn't feel inappropriate because you're just so lost in all the anger and the hurt and the loneliness and emptiness, you feel like you're on fire and you lash out. That was very long and I don't blame you if you can't read all of it, lol. Also to disclaim, I don't excuse these behaviors just because they are symptoms when they harm people and I also hope my explanations don't lend themselves to further stigmatization of bpd. I was simply going through the symptoms and explaining how I believe they match her and how I think she felt mixed in with how I've felt before. People with bpd are human beings and deserve the same treatment as others at the end of the day, praise for being a good person and criticism when being bad. I am glad that Lumi is so nuanced and people can relate to her and I'd be happy to attest to her having bpd, especially since I think she's generally liked and can be positive representation for us. Last note, if we were to go with the bpd theory, we could say that Lumi had such a hard time moving on since that friend could have been her fp (favorite person), a title more specific to bpd. The fp of a person with bpd is the bpd haver's favorite person (as the name implies) and are the most important person in their life and they can be what decides a person with bpd's mood, sense of security, confidence, etc. If the dead friend is her fp, losing them is like losing herself. If you read this all, thank you!! Haha I got too invested
Thank you for your valuable insight on the Borderline Personality Disorder theory! When I first made this lore video I stumbled upon the disorder and connected it to Lumi's condition so much that I decided to mention it here. I expanded it in my Theories video. It's one of my favorite theories and one that I still believe after all this time, but actually having someone who suffers from this comment is incredible. I couldn't read it all but many of the points you made were good and are definitely related to how Lumi thinks/acts. Thank you again, I hope you stay well :)
@Super Phantom User Thank you for making such a great video putting together everything, it helped me understand things better! And of course, I am always happy to speak up about my disorder, especially when the character who has it would be a positive representation of us!
I noticed that World 8 where the Companion leaves has a green color scheme, and so does World 4 where the Companion appears. Maybe the Companion is stuck in its own loop?
This is so incredible and yet terrible to watch. I’ve gone through the loss of a loved one and I know that if you lose people you care about, you turn on yourself and shut yourself in, not letting anyone help because you can’t bear the hurt of letting go. And even if you realize there may be a way out, sometimes it’s too late. You’ve pushed away anyone that would help you and you can’t see that you need to break the cycle.
I'm sorry for what you had to go through, and I'm glad you were able to connect with the CaL series in this way. It's not the right thing to do, but I believe it would be an easy thing to do
I know I'm late, although I have a theory on 'the purple one', what if they were friends with the main cats of the storyline, and had a similar path to lumi's, where they had also continued to go through the maze of worlds and decided not to leave. Eventually trapping themselves and losing themself completely, therefore, their face disappearing entirely like how lumi's face does at the start of ABP and some other moments. And trying to help lumi figure out that she needs to move on and leave that place so that she doesn't end up like how the purple one did. It would explain how the friends might know who the purple one is. Along with the fixing thing- I think it would be them moving on from the loss. Although I still wonder what the glitch might be. Maybe, the glitch could be once lumi starts to believe she should move on, that the glitch ruins her chance of moving on. Ending up trapping her in a place where she can't convince herself to move on and that she should stay there.
So you're saying that Purple was just like Lumi, and that's why they're trying to stop Lumi from following their footsteps? That's a pretty solid theory, and why Purple barely appears in ALITS. It's also confirmed by Dev that Purple was sort-of a friend of Lumi's, and the friends know Purple already, so that checks out.
I feel like the "glitch" could represent depression in some way. Maybe it's a sort of memory loss thing (some people with depression can also experience some form of memory loss), which would explain the confusion. It could also be some sort of anxiety/panic attack, causing Lumi to not think and get confused
I noticed that since that they assume Lumi is the owner because the friend gave their soul to Lumi in the "I gave my cat to you" scene. And the friend says Lumi locked herself in there. She didn't want to leave anyway. AND i also noticed that Nameless Cat is looking for their owner, so when the owner says that Lumi reminds them of someone, the someone could have been Nameless Cat.
I always felt like the "reminds them of someone" was the owner (as the cat would remind someone of their owner), but if the games were in the same universe, that could be a plausible connection
I can't tell you the amount of peace, quiet and loneliness I felt as I progressivelly got deep into the game and eventually finished it during midnight
ALITS ending was so depressing. Lumi loses everything and everything what once was a thing became nothing and how she accepted her fate. Now I am strong man. But it was too emotional for me
I literally cried at the ending of ALITS, because i immediately understood that lumi kill*d herself (there was a white thing that lumi released, after that the spikes fell) and the release pack looked like a afterlife place to me. And i really liked youre theory! Its the best abd most explaing
i remember first playing this game, at first i was getting confused, confused why i was lonely, i had a feeling id meet someone eventually, so once i saw the friends, i felt comforted, then confused when they disappeared, when the blue cat disappeared, i though that was them fusing with lumi (because i never read dialouge) i kept on going...so confused..then comforted again...
Yeah, it's probably not even the first time the ALITS loop has happened, and the Dead Friend confirms this at the end of the Reset Pack by saying "see you next loop"
I noticed something in the two games, in abp when blue and red say they were fixed lumi when turning into liquid was blue and losing life was red, in alits was like this
Finishing this game for the first time is SO refreshing. The lore was actually kinda sad and the 2nd to last world was so sick. I hope this game gets a third part
I made a good ending for Cats are Liquid. Lumi wakes up again. She doesn't remember why. She feels different. Blah blah blah blah basically the same thing happens again ftom the previous stories but the ending is the good part Lumi is about to make another world where she can be happy but a flash of memory from the first game reminds her of pain and sadness but also happiness. She feels real emotions for once. She goes through the door instead of restarting. She wakes up. She realizes that she's not a cat. She's a spirit. She finds out that her friends and her were all cats on earth but after they died they warped into another dimension where they had some control over the worlds. Then after she learns the truth she sees her friends. They don't talk. But they understand. Now that they are finally free from the alternate dimension and they found their way to heaven the can be happy souls.
Here's my ending idea: Purple goes through ALITS too, trying to not get caught by Lumi. They prepare a hookshot and hover near the big exit in 9-10. Right after Lumi pushes the door away, Purple comes down . They pull back the cat and then the exit. Blah blah blah blah
Lumi really works as a name because if shes snow then snow can melt into water, freeze more like in the second games ice world, and evaporate as a mist. And a LIGHT in the shadows works as well because like you said, luminescent means light.
I always thought that the dead friend saying "I gave you my cat" showed us that this place was made by the grieving friend and he used cats in the place becuz he recieved a cat as the last thing from his/her dead friend, so he/she can remember him/her. Also I don't think the purple one is a parental figure, because first of all, it would be lame because it feels more important, and maybe he is not even a living person
1)in ALitS in the neon rooms says that "WE were your friends","You trusted US before" and "trust US now" it means that its not only the dead friend talking there 2)what is the glitch in ABP? 3)i guees that the accident happend to the dead friend is more logic to be with purple, purple got far away and had an accident so she couldnt come back home and the friends thought she died, so she was creating her worlds and began watching from the shadows 4)how can someone die in a world where death has no quenseceses 5)in ALitS she locked herself with no exit but at the end an exit appears
1) Lumi's friends from ABP are talking in the neon rooms. That's why they use "we" and "us" as pronouns 2) No one knows. I think it is either Purple trying to get Lumi to realize the truth, since Purple's face itself is glitchy too, or Lumi "glitching" her world when she sees something that she doesn't want to face, such as her friends being fixed 3) That's very logical, since Purple has no face in-game so it seems like they're kind-of "out of the world" but at the same time the ALITS achievement says that Purple is always watching. It would also make sense how Lumi's other friends and the dead friend know about Purple too 4) Right before Lumi dies in 9-10 she loses her ability to live. This is represented by her spitting out a checkpoint. Without this ability when she dies she actually dies and goes to the afterlife 5) There are no physical exits in the ALITS world. When the giant door appears, it represents Lumi finally about to move on (and probably being "fixed" too). When she kicks the door away, it's showing that she refuses to move on
I think purple is future Lumi, that would explain the glitched Lumi face, as well as the “always watching” thing. And the “did you know the purple one is still here”
The lore in ABP feels like it's someone who made a Minecraft server for him and his friends to play inside. The "fixed" friends describes how each friend has finished their own role in the server, while the "glitches" can be assumed to be the motivation of the person's friends going out due to new interests in their lives or when they're aging in general The companion cube can symbolize as a wolf that the person himself/one of his friends tamed that made him a bit less lonely The powers gained by Lumi could be referred to the Minecraft mods the person himself has made or just symbolizes what he'd do irl (like the Ice Block mechanic would be the same as trying to reach out to a friend asap) In the end, all of the player's friends have grown up and went on their own ways, leaving behind the player as he only has him and his friend's world to himself only, and that he'd make a better place than this or try to be better than the server he and his friends were in, just enjoying it everytime
Very specific, strange, like the Metaphor Theory but in a Minecraft server. As crazy as it seems this actually makes sense(?) and could be a theory of it's own lol
@@SuperPhantomUser To be honest I only have this in thought for the lore of ABP while that theory just simply breaks apart whenever trying to continue it to ALITD, but it feels weirdly coincidental lol
Also I can't remember in which level, but there's a wall you climb up in ALITS, an arrow tells you to go a certain way, but if you keep climbing, there's a second arrow telling you to go the same direction. If you still keep going up, you'll see purple. Edit: whoops i made this comment in the middle of the video and didn't know you'd bring it up later, sorry 😅
You put it togerher really well! I've had almost this exact same theory but I couldn't fully wrap my head around it and some other things. But yeah this makes the most sense.
Thanks! And yeah it took a bit of lore diving and thinking to fully realize the theory I was going for, but once I did it seemed like it was correct. Still, there are tons of other theories that the community has made, which I'll discuss in my next next video (the video after the next video I make)
AHHH I've been a fan of this game and theorizing since I was 12! EXTREMELY well-put together video, very concise and good points are made! You don't exclude other's theories, you rationalize with other people, I love seeing this! In all my years of theorizing and thinking, I've come almost to your same conclusions (thank you for clearing up my view on the owner and the dead friend) but couldn't resist making my own interpretations, even if they diverge from what is actually most likely to be the real story here. Like for example I've always thought that the purple one had been once part of the same group of friends as the other cats, only something happened (along with their friend's death) and the purple one distanced himself from the group and they somehow grew to resent each other (in the neon levels, it seems like the friends dont even want to pronounce Purple directly, only with "you know who..."), just like Lumi kind of did when she said she didn't need RGB anymore. And so they remain in 2 in these worlds, but purple already lost hope (maybe he already was in there for much longer) so he at least wants Lumi to get out, only does so with the wrong method, and as you said, we can see this is canon. But your theory about purple being kind of an authority figure really blowed my mind, it does make sense! I love it so much! I'll always prefer the theory I thought about for all these years tho, I'm too emotionally attached to it now 😔 (noo what tells you that I'm a Purple cat fan)
Wow, I'm really glad you enjoyed the video and your feedback! Honestly there are so many CaL theories that range differently that I couldn't sum them all up in my video For your theory, Purple being one of the friends does make sense, since even the Dev said once that Purple was "kind-of Lumi's friend" Furthermore I love the idea of Purple doing something wrong and distancing themself, because you're right, the RGB friends don't even want to mention Purple Purple could really be anyone, from another friend to an authority figure to even Lumi's own conscience, but no matter what they do have a big impact on the CaL story And lastly, keep onto your theories - no one knows what's right or wrong (except maybe LQD, lol) and we still have a long time until the next CaL game releases Oh btw, you should join the LQS Discord server if you can, there are lots of CaL enthusiasts there :)
@@SuperPhantomUser Didn't the dev say they don't think they'll make another game, or at least for now? I was in the Discord server before, but I rarely use Discord in general so I think I exited? But I remember sending fanart there, I made more (of course of Purple, who else) but I don't think I'll be posting them ^^ Nonetheless, I'm always interested as ever and your video is a goldmine for this game, i can't believe it was in my recommended after 2 whole months :0
Yeah the dev is working on other games, still with how good CaL is, I'm excited for the two new games they are working on :) I like think my video is a reference to find all the lore information while making theories Though I am making a video on CaL theories
I think the cats are stages of grief, lumi is denial (obviously), green- bargaining, blue- depression and red-anger. and the missing cat is acceptance.
Another thing I noticed when playing through ALitS is that not only the cat's face fades away when she gets closer to the end, but also the door fade and become darker and closer to grey. The fading face symbolizes losing hope, but the doors, I think, symbolize something a little more specific: "I don't want to continue, I don't want to go through that, what's the point going further?" Edit: Wow, someone actually put a like on my comment!
@@SuperPhantomUser Yes. Also, the last world is the place where it is revealed that the cat doesn't actually want to get out of this place, so she might not want to go through doors for a chance of freedom
An odd thing is that in ABP, Blue and Red have a connection to Lumi, as in turning to water turns Lumi blue and getting hurt turns Lumi red. But green does not get one. Also, after Red and Blue get fixed, Green never does, and yet when we are leaving, we say ALL of our friends, yet green was never met.
It could be that Green had a closer connection to Lumi, or maybe they did give her a gift, and we just don't know about it - it is an interesting detail
Wait what if because red + blue makes purple? what if those purple cat that appear in certain levels were red and blue (the cats friend) combined? because how they know what lumi is doing if they're "dead" ? and for green maybe green is the only true friend here. other than green not being mentioned too much maybe green is a traitor? or maybe helping lumi?
oter theory: what if purple is really still there? well, since purple create the square, could purple turn AS the square? and in the companion world thing, maybe that where purple is?
Other other theory: Maybe, those "cats" that one of the friend said is maybe all of lumi's friends. Maybe, The "owner" could be one of lumi's friends in the game? and maybe lumi in the "other world" had red, blue, green, as friends but in another kind of world? but maybe.. the owner is.. purple?
Theory 1: the red+blue would certainly be possible, especially with Lumi gaining "gifts" from Red and Blue at the end of ABP. I don't think Green is a traitor. Also, the friends aren't dead, they're just "fixed" which we don't know exactly what that means. Theory 2: In the Companion Pack, you can see Purple at certain times, so I don't think that would make sense. Theory 3: All of those could make sense too. The last one would have to be in a physical sense though, as the Dead Friend says Lumi is the owner, and yet they also talk about Purple as a different figure.
My theory is that in the final level of ALITS the font at the end is the owner who is somehow with the cat like the friends are in ABP and it's the owner talking to his dead friend in the reset.
I started theorising in my head after the first glitch and came to the conclusion that they might have been the real cats and the "friends" might have been the clones which might explain why they were confused, because Lumi could've been replaced as well, but in the purple world (the one with the eyes I forgot which number) I thought that maybe the cats might have been dead. I guess I wasn't too far off from the general idea?
That definitely could explain that, and then the friends in world 7+ are only an illusion, or clones made by Purple. Because the friends were confused before world 3, it wouldn't make sense for them to die in world 3, bu world 3 does seem like the Purple world. And there is no "general idea": the lore was summarized in this video, but the theories can range widely.
when i first watched this after completing both games i didnt quite understand, but rewatching it again months later is just. its like all the pieces are connected together, and how everything is an endless cycle.
I never continued playing this because I couldn't beat it, but also because I thought it was just a simple cat game and nothing else. Never knew this game has deep lore. Might play later
I just finished both the games today.. i started sobbing watching this. i don't know why. its such a depressing plot. i never knew a platformer game about cats could be this deep. i love this. thank you for making this, because i didn't quite fully understand the lore. have a great day.
3:21 what lumi says and the ability in world 2 could be proof of the world not being made before, but instead while she is playing it. Or it could just be a coincidence
It definitely could be that Lumi is making the world up as she continues. After all, in both ABP and ALITS the worlds are seemingly accustomed to the abilities she has. I theorize though that Purple is the one putting the rings before/after each world, so Lumi can have the right abilities (and so they can give her the Companion)
I think that the in ABP lumi's friends were green, blue and red making RGB. but if we mix red, green and blue , it forms white , which is the colour of lumi. So the reason why she doesn't needs any of her friends to do the obstacles is because her friends are already in him (they are mixed together , making white)
I never thought this game would actually have a video about it, it is the best free mobile platformer imo (Well, honestly, i even thought it was very underrated)
I've never finished the second game and completely forgot all of the story good thing some kind stranger made an essay video on this game for me to watch again, truly a life saver.
Oh my god both cats are liquid games were some of my favourite mobile games I’d played EVER!!! I never thought I’d see anybody cover it! I might have to replay the games again before I watch this though, it’s been a while
I never really understood the lore, but even without, me and my friend who found it at an sleepover understood that it's really dark... Especially the ending of Alits.
So based on green saying he's fixed now and can leave at 11:04 it seems the rooms are made by the cats for the cats to help them past some sort of difficulties or struggles before they leave. Like a set of rooms for therapy and improvement. Like they all came together to build the rooms agreeing the rooms would help them be fixed so they could move on but lumi grew attached to her freinds and the rooms she didn't want to move on and she didn't want them to move on she wanted to stay in the rooms forever and adventure with her freinds in the world they made together where death wasn't a concern and they all had great powers
Yup, I agree with all of it! Everyone was happy when they were fixed, and even Lumi knew at the beginning that they would all have to leave someday. Lumi was the only one to get so attached that she couldn't be fixed.
Does anything disprove that the purple one was given to Lumi by her friend. This could have happened to help Lumi, which explains why the purple one would be doing everything, including creating the Companion, to help Lumi.
While nothing explicitly disproves it, I don't think it is likely. When the dead friend says that they gave their cat to Lumi, she is silent. When they mention Purple, however, Lumi reacts much differently.
Amazing video! I'm so glad I finally had the time to watch it. Very comprehensive, you put everything together really well. This is a real treasure of a resource!
Thank you, it was supposed to be exactly that! I tried not to focus on my theories and speculations too much so people could create their own using the lore given from the games :)
33:37 as a year later i think I have a theory myself. “I gave my cat to you” so, you see the dead friend probably had the same icon as Lumi. But then the dead saw Lumi and gave Lumi the cat. So now the dead friend is the purple cat with nothing because Lumi was I think originally the purple one.
Guyyyyyys! I have my own theory! My theory is: Dead friend gave for abp lumi a alits lumi. Alits lumi reminded her a dead friend. Then lumi created a world and put her cat or alits lumi in that world. Then ABP lumi died and her soul went to alits lumi. Alits lumi said, that her owner acted strange and put her there. The owner acted like abp lumi. But Alits lumi had 2 souls? Yeah, something like this. Alitslumi was given Abplumi by dead friend, but abp put alits in the „betterplace“ . Abp vied and her soul went to alits body, so when Alits soul went to „reset“ abp lumi could be a Dead Friend. It can be so, that abp lumi created Alits lumi, and it reminded her of RBG (her friends) so she put her there. I‘ll write it more clear in comments to this comment. :3
Maybe this isnt that bad as it could be seen.. Like the reset means that lumi is still alive and the line "the reset was done" may mean that after "killing herself" somebody may have called ambulance or something like that and lumi is saved. Lets see this in the next part of *Cats* *Are* *Liquid*
The lore of this is really sad i just started playing cats are liquid a year ago but i played the sequel first then the ABP i just kinda dont understand at first but when i got to the end i was really sad shes going through this loop over and over again just to see her friends which letting her friend cant rest peacefully because she was reseting over and over again that makes it really sad😢
About hope and losing one's face... Well, in Russian, there is a proverb: "На нем лица не было" That translates to: "There wasn't a face on him" But it has a different meaning...
All of this makes sense to me, I think you are completely right with your theory!! I didn't know that this game's story could be this deep... Thats so freak 🙀 and at the same time, so amazing! I can't explain, I just love this game.
The only thing I don't understand is why blue and red cats' faces became blurred when they got fixed? Maybe it's just how Lumi saw this from the shock of loosing green cat.
33:27 i belive that the cat isn't really a cat, and just a representation of him in that place, and the one's talking are the owner and the narator, because they are talking about the cat, she isn't talking about himself
This used to be a game I'd play when I got bored, I never knew there would be so much lore behind it. I didn't even know there was lore until I stumbled upon this video
I finally completely understood the story of this game and the actual meaning of the storylines. I always thought that Purple was an enemy for Lumi. I admire The Last Quarter for making a game with cats so sad. It seems very cute at first, but since you start understanding the meaning...it gets sad and interesting.
The story of cats are liquid is a never ending cat and mouse chase. On the outside it looks like an innocent cute game, but as it progresses it just gets more intriguing, scary and depressing and with each ending it always makes you ponder.
“What’s next?”
True, it looks like any other cat platformer but its messages are super deep
@@SuperPhantomUser hear me out on my theory,
What if lumi is a hikikomori (a person who shuts themselves in their parents or their own homes for long periods of time ranging about 2 or more years) and the “friend” who died was actually their SISTER, (I’ll explain later) and the entirety of cats are liquid is just “lumi” dreaming and the PERSON who is dreaming is looking at themselves as lumi since they don’t want to forget the last gift the sister gave.

The ending of ALITS is just... scary for me, watching her just instead of going through the exit, and accepting her friend's death, she just doesn't, she resets everything by killing herself, is just so intriguing to me.
It's a prime example of a game that doesn't have a good ending. If ALITS did have a good ending, it just wouldn't have made sense.

Purple cat may be found outside of the last world as well but I’m not sure
Something interesting is that in the neon rooms the gravitation clouds are purple (the ones that follow lumi when you are close)
I think this symbolizes purples attempt to reach out in physical ways of comfort because they cannot use words to comfort lumi.

Blue:depression(sad face, acting glum, freezing time like it's just stuck that way, parting gift is active when watery like tears)
???(maybe purple?
Edit: Thanks for the likes!

also would explain why Lumi was pissed companion wouldnt tell her how it could touch orange without being hurt^^

my theory about the glitches in ABP: Lumi causes the glitches herself whenever she remembers she eventually needs to leave in order to forget the pain, thus forgetting that she needs to move on.
Yep, could definitely represent her trying to stop herself from remembering
@@SuperPhantomUser What if the glitches don't represent anything, just like actual glitches? I know this game has a lot of lore, but sometimes we just have to stop trying to find meanings to everyone and everything.
@user-me2zb1bz3u the problem is that glitches are still an important part of the game, it's a little bit the reason for the distance of lumi and the other cats, so even if it was only glitches, it's still important and it can be good to theorize about it
I like how blue and red are like “here take this, bye!”

1) The Companion's abilities parallel to the friends' is something that other members of the LQS Discord server have noticed as well (great job for noticing that btw) and they connect the boost to Green since Green is the only other cat besides Lumi where turning to liquid is a big part of their ability
2) Green is definitely different from Red and Blue, in the way they treat Lumi in 7-1 and how their dialogue is different when they are "fixed"

After it’s complete, her memory is wiped and she’s transported to the first room where everything unfolds the exact same pretty much (this is why she said the orange triangle is familiar)
I wonder how the companion is in abp?
Oh and they said that companion was just before world 4 when katwtfynn was playing alits and I’m not sure if abp was out then or not, don’t think so
Hmmm, all interesting comments. I think that LQS meant in ALITS, so that really does raise the question of why the Companion is in ABP.

I hold these two games dear to my heart because I love little indie games you could beat in a day but have so much deepened lore and meaning to them. Especially when they have micro games of the other characters' POV.
Yes these types of games are my life haha
Same ^~^
When I first saw the "I gave my cat to you" line my brain short-circuited too but the first theory that came into my head was that maybe since they are god-like entities (creating/altering worlds, resetting time, etc) maybe they're not cats but only possessing them, and the friends gave her lumi as a gift (if lumi is the cat's name not the character/entity's name). That would be really confusing but nobody's mentioned it (that I an tell) and it's some food for thought
same
Hmmm this story is confusing...
It feels like this game represents something, like friendship, betrayal, trust or something like that.
I think these games represent depression and what it is like to always feel worthless. It sounds sad but is true. Friendship, betrayal, and trust are also communicated through the games.
I know its really late but i just finished both games, theorized a little, but the thing its supposed to rrpresent is disconnection from reality and something else depressing, it was in the description of the game when i downloaded it
Betrayal is in Among Us, not CaL!
@@MaximRodin-s9uSometimes, there are some games that may conclude Betrayal.
I believe it's grief and depression in general.
The story part where everything glitched and her friends disappearing made me tear up even the last story
It's sad, hopefully Lumi gets a happy ending someday in the future
Yeh i wish
imagine a third game called "the last reset"
@Gato Valla that would be interesting!
sarcasm?
something I noticed:
World 12 has ten levels, which is not enough to fit each world into a corresponding level.
I think Lumi made the Companion in World 8, not Purple
theory for the "i gave you my cat" line: the dead friend is actually referring to the purple one when saying this. the dead friend somehow manifested the purple one into existence to try to help lumi through her grief and eventually let her escape.
Their color will be revealed in the third game.

One of the reasons I like CaL more than, for example, Nameless Cat is that there are no villains, no bad guys, no fighting involved.
Red: good guy
Green: good guy
Blue: good guy
Lumi: good guy, just gone a little crazy
Purple: actually a good guy
Dead Friend: IDK, but my theory is that they are actually Purple
Companion: obviously a good guy, it is a good guy's pet
It's sad that so much suffering comes from when there is no one with malicious intent, but it's true that sometimes we're our own worst enemy, and it's definitely a strength of the game
@@SuperPhantomUser I 100% agree. When there are no villains, we just become them ourselves and ruin our own lives
Also, in W5R10 the friends say:
"You are the only one who stayed"
"Except..."
"You know who."
Purple stayed with Lumi in ALITS, that means they have existed somewhere else, too.
@@SuperPhantomUser We don't know if Purple exists in ABP, but maybe we can check the game files to find out. Because some guy on TH-cam checked the files to find out in which rooms there was a purple cat in the other game.
@@SuperPhantomUserEven though they mention Purple, they only do so in the context that "they are still here", which could mean they're saying the cat can't get away from Purple
it was so cute and innocent at first when I started playing.. AND IT JUST WENT DOWN DEEPER INTO THE OCEAN-..
The iceberg is real
AyooOOOOOO
I played this game when I was in middle school and am revisiting it in college. I relate a lot to how Lumi feels and am crying because I'm just so sad about it. I really would like a third game even though it doesn't sound like they're planning on it. To end it with her 'stuck' in a loop of her own creation makes sense because some people become prisoners to their grief and cannot move on, but it just makes me sad. I really want Lumi to escape. I want her to meet her friends again in the real world, or wherever they are right now, and I want them all to move on and find happiness again together. :(
Edit: As someone professionally diagnosed with bpd, I honestly did see myself in Lumi (and the symptoms of bpd specifically) as I played but didn't dwell on them too much since sometimes I relate too many characters to it just because it's comforting to feel seen even if it's just a single behavior.
I'll try to be more brief with the others 😿
Unstable, intense relationships: after the cats leave, after the Companion disappears, her initial reaction is intense anger from the hurt.
Well that comment was a big boi
@@MaximRodin-s9u Never underestimate a passionate person seeing positive representation of their disorder LMAOOO
I think purple is the one who died.
I feel like the "glitch" could represent depression in some way. Maybe it's a sort of memory loss thing (some people with depression can also experience some form of memory loss), which would explain the confusion. It could also be some sort of anxiety/panic attack, causing Lumi to not think and get confused
This is such an amazing theory ❤❤❤
i think the "but i gave my cat to you" line might be implementing blue and red giving lumi their colors in abp when they die
The Dead Friend was confirmed to be speaking there (not the same as the RGB friends as far as we know), but I can definitely see a connection there
That also fits in with my theory that Red and Blue went into ALITS as Purple
I noticed that since that they assume Lumi is the owner because the friend gave their soul to Lumi in the "I gave my cat to you" scene. And the friend says Lumi locked herself in there. She didn't want to leave anyway. AND i also noticed that Nameless Cat is looking for their owner, so when the owner says that Lumi reminds them of someone, the someone could have been Nameless Cat.
I always felt like the "reminds them of someone" was the owner (as the cat would remind someone of their owner), but if the games were in the same universe, that could be a plausible connection
yeah,@@SuperPhantomUser but the devs are not the same. they could be in the same universe tho, as you suggested..
I can't tell you the amount of peace, quiet and loneliness I felt as I progressivelly got deep into the game and eventually finished it during midnight
That must have been super disappointing, pulling a half-nighter just to get an ending that wasn't even good

@@dianavasile6949 Is that a request for the third game?
33:50 my theory for this line is that the owner (presumably the one talking) gave her (the cat) freedom. So, it’s giving *her* to her.
Ah, I see. Not a bad idea for the line
I literally cried at the ending of ALITS, because i immediately understood that lumi kill*d herself (there was a white thing that lumi released, after that the spikes fell) and the release pack looked like a afterlife place to me. And i really liked youre theory! Its the best abd most explaing
true
quick recap: the game is about a friend group which suffered a tragic death and one just couldn't move on so they killed themselves
Not really killed, more like an endless loop
i remember first playing this game, at first i was getting confused, confused why i was lonely, i had a feeling id meet someone eventually, so once i saw the friends, i felt comforted, then confused when they disappeared, when the blue cat disappeared, i though that was them fusing with lumi (because i never read dialouge) i kept on going...so confused..then comforted again...
And Blue, Red And Green Fused her And Green Was The One Made The Switch charact
I think that when lumi says: when I can feel all this like brand new" It's not the first time that lumi was feeling all like new
Yeah, it's probably not even the first time the ALITS loop has happened, and the Dead Friend confirms this at the end of the Reset Pack by saying "see you next loop"
I noticed something in the two games, in abp when blue and red say they were fixed lumi when turning into liquid was blue and losing life was red, in alits was like this
Exactly.
Menu theme named - "Machines can Dream" and in ABP "Machines can hope"
I guess it's mean this: Companion can feel, Enemy Cubes can feel cuz they machines
Maybe the song names are unrelated, maybe it’s just named after what it sounded like to the developer?
It might mean that Purple is in some way a machine...
Finishing this game for the first time is SO refreshing. The lore was actually kinda sad and the 2nd to last world was so sick. I hope this game gets a third part
Refreshing? Seeing her push away the big exit and drop spikes on herself? That is refreshing?!
Everyone wants a third part. Ok, I'm going to LQS TH-cam channel and commenting the request on the most popular video.
I made a good ending for Cats are Liquid.
Lumi wakes up again. She doesn't remember why. She feels different. Blah blah blah blah basically the same thing happens again ftom the previous stories but the ending is the good part
Lumi is about to make another world where she can be happy but a flash of memory from the first game reminds her of pain and sadness but also happiness.
I like this ending. I feel like it's one that actually fits with the CaL series. Also, what would happen with Purple?
@@SuperPhantomUser i dont know
Here's my ending idea:
Purple goes through ALITS too, trying to not get caught by Lumi. They prepare a hookshot and hover near the big exit in 9-10. Right after Lumi pushes the door away, Purple comes down . They pull back the cat and then the exit. Blah blah blah blah
@@MaximRodin-s9u oh wow that's a pretty good idea and I totally forgot cats are liquid existed

Lumi really works as a name because if shes snow then snow can melt into water, freeze more like in the second games ice world, and evaporate as a mist.
And a LIGHT in the shadows works as well because like you said, luminescent means light.
Yes, great theory!
I like the metaphor theory, it's sad but it's logical at the same time
As I watched the video I was thinking "but maybe.." and you literally gave my most in-depth theory!
Which one?
1)in ALitS in the neon rooms says that "WE were your friends","You trusted US before" and "trust US now" it means that its not only the dead friend talking there
2)what is the glitch in ABP?
3)i guees that the accident happend to the dead friend is more logic to be with purple, purple got far away and had an accident so she couldnt come back home and the friends thought she died, so she was creating her worlds and began watching from the shadows
4)how can someone die in a world where death has no quenseceses
5)in ALitS she locked herself with no exit but at the end an exit appears
1) Lumi's friends from ABP are talking in the neon rooms. That's why they use "we" and "us" as pronouns
2) No one knows. I think it is either Purple trying to get Lumi to realize the truth, since Purple's face itself is glitchy too, or Lumi "glitching" her world when she sees something that she doesn't want to face, such as her friends being fixed
3) That's very logical, since Purple has no face in-game so it seems like they're kind-of "out of the world" but at the same time the ALITS achievement says that Purple is always watching. It would also make sense how Lumi's other friends and the dead friend know about Purple too
4) Right before Lumi dies in 9-10 she loses her ability to live. This is represented by her spitting out a checkpoint. Without this ability when she dies she actually dies and goes to the afterlife
5) There are no physical exits in the ALITS world. When the giant door appears, it represents Lumi finally about to move on (and probably being "fixed" too). When she kicks the door away, it's showing that she refuses to move on
I think purple is future Lumi, that would explain the glitched Lumi face, as well as the “always watching” thing. And the “did you know the purple one is still here”
The big exit doesn't mean anything, as Lumi doesn't use it to gt out anyway.
The lore in ABP feels like it's someone who made a Minecraft server for him and his friends to play inside.
The "fixed" friends describes how each friend has finished their own role in the server, while the "glitches" can be assumed to be the motivation of the person's friends going out due to new interests in their lives or when they're aging in general
The companion cube can symbolize as a wolf that the person himself/one of his friends tamed that made him a bit less lonely
The powers gained by Lumi could be referred to the Minecraft mods the person himself has made or just symbolizes what he'd do irl (like the Ice Block mechanic would be the same as trying to reach out to a friend asap)
In the end, all of the player's friends have grown up and went on their own ways, leaving behind the player as he only has him and his friend's world to himself only, and that he'd make a better place than this or try to be better than the server he and his friends were in, just enjoying it everytime
Yup, that's where I found Purple for the first time!
Honestly there are so many CaL theories that range differently that I couldn't sum them all up in my video
For your theory, Purple being one of the friends does make sense, since even the Dev said once that Purple was "kind-of Lumi's friend" Furthermore I love the idea of Purple doing something wrong and distancing themself, because you're right, the RGB friends don't even want to mention Purple
Purple could really be anyone, from another friend to an authority figure to even Lumi's own conscience, but no matter what they do have a big impact on the CaL story
And lastly, keep onto your theories - no one knows what's right or wrong (except maybe LQD, lol) and we still have a long time until the next CaL game releases
Oh btw, you should join the LQS Discord server if you can, there are lots of CaL enthusiasts there :)
@@SuperPhantomUser Didn't the dev say they don't think they'll make another game, or at least for now? I was in the Discord server before, but I rarely use Discord in general so I think I exited? But I remember sending fanart there, I made more (of course of Purple, who else) but I don't think I'll be posting them ^^
Nonetheless, I'm always interested as ever and your video is a goldmine for this game, i can't believe it was in my recommended after 2 whole months :0
Yeah the dev is working on other games, still with how good CaL is, I'm excited for the two new games they are working on :)
I like think my video is a reference to find all the lore information while making theories
Though I am making a video on CaL theories
@@Hmmm1p3050 ^^ > ^~^!
That you're a WHAT fan
Btw I like Purple too
I think the cats are stages of grief, lumi is denial (obviously), green- bargaining, blue- depression and red-anger. and the missing cat is acceptance.
Totally didn't think about it like that, great theory!
Another thing I noticed when playing through ALitS is that not only the cat's face fades away when she gets closer to the end, but also the door fade and become darker and closer to grey. The fading face symbolizes losing hope, but the doors, I think, symbolize something a little more specific: "I don't want to continue, I don't want to go through that, what's the point going further?"
Edit: Wow, someone actually put a like on my comment!
I definitely think that this is true: at the beginning, each door symbolizes a chance of freedom, but by the end, its meaningless.
@@SuperPhantomUser Yes. Also, the last world is the place where it is revealed that the cat doesn't actually want to get out of this place, so she might not want to go through doors for a chance of freedom
I thought this was just a lore video i never thought i would actually cry a little
An odd thing is that in ABP, Blue and Red have a connection to Lumi, as in turning to water turns Lumi blue and getting hurt turns Lumi red.
Thanks for explaining it all. I was so confused.
I didn't know a game about cats could be that deep 😭😭
Also you forgot to mention the music packs in extras such as Cold and empty could be a reference to the companion.
31:17 I have this achievement, the profile it has is a purple background and a glitched black Lumi face.
The full bio says
"Always watching, always there, you can't escape."
YES. CLONES.
Can you explain to me the story of the game??
I already sealed it but I don't understand it.🥺 🙏
@@amatal_rahman1437 Watch the video man
One of my games of all time: the neon style, an amazing story, neat platforming for a mobile game, and sad but powerful endings; it is a masterpiece.
when i first watched this after completing both games i didnt quite understand, but rewatching it again months later is just. its like all the pieces are connected together, and how everything is an endless cycle.
I noticed that Purple's face in ABP is actually a glitched version of Lumi's face in ALITS, not ABP
I never continued playing this because I couldn't beat it, but also because I thought it was just a simple cat game and nothing else. Never knew this game has deep lore. Might play later
Holy shit this was my entire fucking childhood I am eternally grateful for this
I just finished both the games today.. i started sobbing watching this. i don't know why. its such a depressing plot. i never knew a platformer game about cats could be this deep. i love this. thank you for making this, because i didn't quite fully understand the lore. have a great day.
Same, I love this game despite its sadness. The video is very good and so are the comments.
I'm glad you liked the video and even better the lore and this game, it's really good
3:21 what lumi says and the ability in world 2 could be proof of the world not being made before, but instead while she is playing it.
Ah I like that explanation!
I got recommended this video and was like “what is cats are liquid” and it was the saddest game about goopy cats I have ever seen.
this game is so nostalgic for me and so close to my heart. to see all the love people have for it is inspiring
I never thought this game would actually have a video about it, it is the best free mobile platformer imo
(Well, honestly, i even thought it was very underrated)
I specialize in mobile platformers, haha, this one is no exception!
I've never finished the second game and completely forgot all of the story
good thing some kind stranger made an essay video on this game for me to watch again, truly a life saver.
The ending of a better place made me cry because she felt like she just had to keep smiling and everything would be okay it's very sad😢
Lore really is dark, even without understanding the full story most players can tell that
@@SuperPhantomUser These small channel owners are so friendly: they respond to every comment!
It's weird for a older, more important cat to be given to a younger cat.
I played this game a long time ago and just couldn't stop thinking abt it, I'm glad to see other people acknowledge it
Amazing video! I'm so glad I finally had the time to watch it. Very comprehensive, you put everything together really well. This is a real treasure of a resource!
Thank you, it was supposed to be exactly that! I tried not to focus on my theories and speculations too much so people could create their own using the lore given from the games :)
Darn i knew the lore was dark, but didnt knew it was this dark, i only remembered bits of the game since i last pñayed 3 years ago
Cats thoughts crumbled upon himself , this shows effects of isolation
33:37 as a year later i think I have a theory myself. “I gave my cat to you” so, you see the dead friend probably had the same icon as Lumi. But then the dead saw Lumi and gave Lumi the cat. So now the dead friend is the purple cat with nothing because Lumi was I think originally the purple one.
I think that Purple is the dead friend, I have proof.
24:57 always gets me laughing
Lol, just bonked it away
@@SuperPhantomUser and then it oyasumied itself
i cried when i saw it for the first time
Fr like it suddenly fly to the air
Shit made me cry and depressed for a whole day bruh 😭
Guyyyyyys! I have my own theory! My theory is:
Dead friend gave for abp lumi a alits lumi.
:3
Oh so your theory is that the Dead Friend gave Lumi from ABP another Lumi that ABP Lumi then locked in ALITS...
this is definitely something that was thought of during 3AM motivation
Of course, only the best/darkest ideas are created at that time
The achievement was definitely a piece of motivation for me to do my homework!
i just finished ALITS (a light in the shadow) and its so deep and good!! i hope they make more
I think it's all about dealing with depression from losing someone very close to you
That is indeed what the theme seems to be
Maybe this isnt that bad as it could be seen..
Like the reset means that lumi is still alive and the line "the reset was done" may mean that after "killing herself" somebody may have called ambulance or something like that and lumi is saved.
Lets see this in the next part of
*Cats*
*Are*
*Liquid*
That could be true, she like starts over her process of getting better
No, in The Reset, she was a ghost, and then she respawned like normal.
Really quite a sad story
About hope and losing one's face...
Well, in Russian, there is a proverb:
"На нем лица не было"
That translates to:
"There wasn't a face on him"
But it has a different meaning...
Hmm... I have a number of guesses of what that could mean, but either way, it is dark...
All of this makes sense to me, I think you are completely right with your theory!! I didn't know that this game's story could be this deep... Thats so freak 🙀 and at the same time, so amazing! I can't explain, I just love this game.
The line "but i gave my cat to you" probably means that it gave the HP to the cat or gave myself to you the power to create
The only thing I don't understand is why blue and red cats' faces became blurred when they got fixed? Maybe it's just how Lumi saw this from the shock of loosing green cat.
I feel like it's representing the cats becoming less and less in contact with Lumi before they leave entirely
Finally a TH-camr playing this game
33:27 i belive that the cat isn't really a cat, and just a representation of him in that place, and the one's talking are the owner and the narator, because they are talking about the cat, she isn't talking about himself
A great video, an enormous comment discussion and a playlist of background music, 3 in 1!
I almost cried to be honest
I did too.
This used to be a game I'd play when I got bored, I never knew there would be so much lore behind it. I didn't even know there was lore until I stumbled upon this video
finally, someone else who's played cats are liquid
One in a million
Check the downloads
In ABP, Lumi's friends were fixed. In the ending of ALITS, she says that "everything can always be fixed". Maybe there's something to connect here...
I finally completely understood the story of this game and the actual meaning of the storylines. I always thought that Purple was an enemy for Lumi. I admire The Last Quarter for making a game with cats so sad. It seems very cute at first, but since you start understanding the meaning...it gets sad and interesting.
If it was just a cute cat platformer, it wouldn't be remembered as well. The story and dynamic of Cats are Liquid is what makes it so interesting
I totally agree... (and I just finished ALitS, it's... wow.)
