Speaking of L10 my brother's best friend just turned 21. So he brought his friend to me to teach him the ways of whiskey (rightfully so). I told him he could go to some bar and get trashed on overpriced drinks. Or enjoy something good for free BUT he had to have it neat and listen to me explain just what he was drinking. He opted for the later. So I gave him a pour of Blanton's. He loved it. Listening well as I explained what bourbon was while joking around. You would want to follow up a great smooth bourbon like that with something friendly but maybe a tad more complex. So naturally being a novice who just had one of the smoothest bourbons there is, I gave him laphroaig 10. This might be my new favorite thing. It's like wrapping someone is a warm sleeping bag and riiight as they doze off rolling it into an ice cold river. Funny thing is he loved it! Finding it to be smoother than the Blanton's even! I need to find more newborns to run this test on for... you know, science.
Great review! For a variation on your toast: “Here’s to lying, cheating and stealing. If you’re going to lie, lie about your age. If you’re going to cheat, cheat death. If you’re going to steal, steal someone’s heart.” Quite fitting for a savvy sommelier and a magnificent mooch!
I bought my first bottle of whiskey two days ago, it was Wild Turkey 101 which costs $40 where I live for a liter. My brother is friends with the gentleman who runs the store, the magnificent bastard is always giving my brother free and discounted alcohol. I told my brother to buy me some whiskey and they only charged him $10 for the wild turkey and my brother gave it to me for free. Needless to say, I mooched my first ever bottle of whiskey, thank you Rex for all the mooch wisdom you have imparted to me.
Hey guys! Love the videos, super informative and hilarious. I know y'all read long comments so here goes. I'm new to whiskey and thanks to your informative videos I've now tried both bulliet bourbon and rye, and glenlivet 12. Which by the way Rex would be proud, the establishment that I ordered it from had just enough for not quite one-half rocks glass so I got it for free. And I also mooched the bottle from them for my collection. However, I live just outside of casino world Mississippi. I had to hunt, seriously hunt, for more than Jack or Jim Beam. But fret not! There is one single solitary store that has a good selection. They have everything I want to try. I wanted to go for an islay, so I thought laphroaig, but they had a locked cabinet in the back of the store. Within the cabinet was one single bottle of ardbeg an oa, and my god is it magnificent. My question to the two of you is, what would you suggest after that? The store has a bottle of hibiki, but they also have bruichladdich, I'm torn between the two. Anyway thank you for the great videos and may you forever be magnificent.
Love the wallflowers reference. “Just like sugar and tangerines” one of their best tunes. I have this bottle on hold. Will be getting it this Saturday just in time for my annual whisky and wibs bbq!
When Rex mentioned that Daniel picks up a soapy flavor more often than he does, it reminded me of the episode where people who liked cilantro did not get the same flavor profile as those who did not like it. Maybe Daniel is genetically predisposition to be picking up the soap. I mean, the flavor of soap.
you all probably dont give a damn but does any of you know a way to get back into an instagram account?? I stupidly lost my account password. I love any assistance you can give me!
@Emerson Konnor i really appreciate your reply. I found the site through google and im trying it out now. Takes a while so I will reply here later with my results.
I have been waiting for Arran! Was able to find a 50ml taster bottle at Total Wine and loved it. Wish more distilleries would do small bottles like that.
I know you guys did this review quite sometime ago, but I just picked up a bottle of the Arran 14 and gave it a try. The one thing that I really noticed that really stood out, that you guys didn’t mention, was the extreme metallic note at the very very last flavor - after it was swallowed and was almost gone. Kinda turned me off, maybe because I couldn’t place it?!? Hoping that if you ever use it for another comparison you might address that last metallic note. Thanks
So, an update… After re-trying that bottle over the last couple of weeks, and completing about 25 to 30% of the bottle, that metallic aftertaste has gradually diminished. Very surprised and happy about that. I have heard about bottles that started off not so great, and then about halfway through totally change in the profile. This was one of them for me. Just wanted to let y’all know.
Rex & Daniel when you speak about the Arran 14 it reminds me of my first and only tasting of the Caol Ila Moch about 6 months ago, effervescent lemony deliciousness. I've had the hardest time finding a bottle of Moch back in the US to see if my memory of that dram holds true. Any chance the Moch is in the vault?
Great review guys, some really great expressions from the Arran Distillery including the Amarone, Port, Sauternes and Madeira Cask finishes which is great to see from a distillery which I feel hasn't had the right exposure, Daniel Whittington you are a Magnificent Basta.... Awesome choice!
The pop tart v. toaster strudel video being referenced both before it happened but after it aired?!?!?! This episode was a retcon to the entire WhiskeyBiscuit/Vault cinematic universe!
It’s sort of Roshemon-like is what you are saying....lots of flashbacks and flash forwards.......it’s like the movies, because they can do anything they want with good video editing.
When I first tasted Laphroaig 10 my thoughts were of a dusty old shoe store ran by an old woman who chainsmoked. Your description of Arran 14 reminded me of that.
@David Howard thanks, I agree. This was a comment from years ago. No doubt in my mind today about Arran’s positioning over the years vs less exciting Oban offerings
This might be a stupid question but me and some friends are trying a new whiskey Wednesday. Should we open it now to let it get air? Someone told me letting your whiskey get air makes it taste better. or it doesnt matter? Some say we can open it brand new but we should leave the bottle opened for 15 minutes. Then have your first pour.
Nah, it won't matter. When you let it air, that can happen in the glass as you pour. Just let it rest a bit and sip it slowly. It will change slightly over time. Best to not let that happen in the bottle.
Daniel, question If scotch has to be aged on bourbon barrels before it is called scotch Before bourbon was a thing what did people in Scotland use to aged its scotch and legally call it so?
It doesn't, actually. The law only requires it be "aged in oak barrels". It doesn't specific new or use, and it doesn't specify what they should have held previously. Historically is was sherry barrels before bourbon.
By sparkly and effervescent, are you referring to the similar almost champagne bubble-like tingle that Talisker 10 has all over your mouth?...it's not quite an alcohol burn feeling, but not quite as soft as carbonation...
I feel Rex missed a final comparison when you broke out the Lagavulin. Surely the peated Arran, Machrie Moor, would have been perfect to bring everything together. The cast strength is on of my favourites
As to your tasting notes kit, there's a company based in Jersey City called CB I Hate Perfume. I'm betting that Christopher Brosius could totally hook you up with essences that would exactly replicate what you're looking for. He's got a scent created for Alan Cumming that contains notes of Malt Whisky, Cigar, Rubber, Worn Leather, Highland Mud, Burnt Rubber, and Peat Fire.
After spending all day playing with the kids, I told my ten-year old “hey, I’m going take a break for ten minutes and watch a TH-cam video.” He said, without missing a beat, “the Mooch and the Somm?” I couldn’t stop laughing.
Newer whiskey drinker here. I live in KY so I've been working through the classic bourbons but want to try some scotch. I've tried Johnny red label and thought it tasted like bath water. Can you recommend a good scotch for someone transitioning from bourbon? Thanks@
Monkey Shoulder, Glenfiddich 12, (or any JW that isn't red) would be my recommendation if you wanted something similar(ish) to bourbon in the realm of scotch. Also, they're pretty inexpensive ($30-$35ish near me in GA).
Agreed, I have half a bottle here too. Total fruit bomb in a wonderful way. Mine was super bitter until some oxygen got into the bottle, though. (Now it's absolutely not.)
Yup, first pour for me was off and very disappointing. It completely changed as the level went down, as do most. That's why I put no value in reviews done on samples. Live with the whisky for a while then tell me what you think.
My brother-in-law is a bourbon fan and he loves Wild Turkey 101. We bought Four Roses Single Barrel and he liked that as well. What is another bourbon I can have him try that has complexity and character?
I haven't made it around to Wild Turkey 101 or Four Roses Single Barrel yet, but I very much enjoyed the Larceny, Evan Williams Single Barrel and Elijah Craig Small Batch that I got in a Heaven Hill Distillery sampler (Bernheim Original Wheat whiskey was also great, but Pikesville Straight Rye was a bit aggressive for my taste and just got meaner when water was added).
Hello my favourite whisk(e)y guys on the internet! I'm relatively new to the whisk(e)y world, I've been enjoing it for about a year now and I'm absolutely in love with bourbons. I especialy enjoy the long exceptional finish of Four Roses (Single Barrel) and Wild Turkey (RB and 101), that makes breathing a pleasure. Could you please give and advice where else should I look for this great sensation? I've already tried Makers Mark (didn't like it at first, but now I adore it) and Knob Creek Small Batch (didn't like it at all). Also - I'm european, so more exotic bourbons may not be available to me.
In Calgary, Alberta...The Arran 14 is $79, Lagavulin 16 is $121. The Arran Amarone Cask is $77. NAS, yes, but I'm pretty sure most of their bottling are hitting 10 years (as I understand it, 10 year is their base, but it could be younger for the Cask Finishes line). Would have to do more research to really see.
Ok, here in Europe, Laga 16 and Arran 14 cost about the same amount (45-50€, Laga usually a bit more expensive than the Arran 14,...). I think the Arran cask finishes (which cost slightly more than the 14) justify their price by the fact they have more alcohol (50% for the Amarone for ex.) and because of the finishing (Sauternes, or Amarone are expensive wines), but the age ? I'd doubt they are at least 10 yo, for me NAS are younger (and finishings tend to hide it...) otherwise they would label it. Can be also that all finishes are not all the same age or also that not labelling it give them more liberty and flexibilty. I think only the people at the distillery know it.
Do u have the Arran Amarone in the vault? Im in the process of gettting another donation together but I'm trying to decide what to send. I really love that stuff and have bought 2 bottles of it. Its extremely fruity, which usually isn't my thing, but man is it good. Think you'd enjoy it.
I'm stumbling my way through a budget whiskey Journey and I have really enjoyed a bottle of monkey shoulder (thanks to you) as well as a bottle of Johnnie Walker Double Black I'm hoping to save up for a bottle of Johnnie Walker Blue by the end of the year but in the meantime I'm wanting to know what your recommendation of a good scotch at a lower price point that will have a lot of smoke and heavy Cherry notes. Thanks for your time and always remember the three most important letters in the English language B E Z. Be easy my friends.
HELP about 6 months ago i was gifted a bottle of Balvenie classic oldest selection the one with 1982 or 1892 one or the other wax seal by a friend after looking it up I decided to hold on to it for my 40th birthday however last week after receiving some bad news and there being no other alcohol in the house i went for it and straight away wished i hadnt the cork crumbled into pieces so i did as you guys advised in one of your previous videos and strained out the crap and sat down to enjoy what i thought would be a great whisky however before i could even take my first sip i was put off by the smell which i honestly could not descride other than somewhere between sherry and permanent marker but i persevered and the taste was exactly the same please tell me what went wrong and why and if there is a way to rescue it as i have no idea what to do now.
You are a victim of the dreaded CORK ROT! Bacteria in the cork destroyed the stopper. You should insert a fresh new or good used cork. Cork rot is common with bottled wines too. Daniel said a few dozen episodes ago that you should occasionally turn your whiskey bottles upside down to wet the cork but you shouldn’t store the bottle so that the whiskey is always in contact with the cork. Your case is very sad! I am sad to hear it happened! Be strong!
(For reference it’s pronounced Froind or just say friend as that’s the German translation) I’m at the airport right now! Quick what duty-free bottles should I grab that are not in the vault and exclusive to duty-free?!
Hey guys, i have a request :p I would like to see your try the Caol Ila Moch and compare it with the 12yrs old one. Since the Moch is non aged statement, i suppose it should be younger, but they are priced the same, and i would like to know which one you prefer best. That would be cool and intresting, guys ! Cheers from Belgium !
Anyone else watching Lost In Space and feeling nit picky? They mention “Orkney peat” and then spend the rest of the season drinking Lagavulin instead of Highland Park? Maybe I’ve gone too far up my own ass.
Regarding the "soap" tasting notes, I'd bet my entire collection that Rex likes cilantro and Daniel doesn't. Note that "my collection" budget primarily affords me Wild Turkey 101 and Rittenhouse rye.
And Yeah, in the beginning there was but one, and one was the counting of the magnificent bastards in the beginning! Then, yeah, there was another and another and another and another, but the original magnificent bastard , Daniel of Whittington, still remained. As a shepherd was he unto them, leading his flock of bastards of magnificence to major malty mentoring meetings and yeah, they became even more MAGNIFICENT (well, at least as magnificent as bastards can become when malt motivated) and they eventually multiplied beyond all counting and spread their message of malty love across the face of the Earth! 🥃 Amen 😉 PS And some loopy dude named Tex......I mean Rex helped out a little bit too! 😜😉
Guys ! You need to try Stillhouse whiskey! This is the hundredth time I'm commenting this and I'm getting angy now, you don't want that, do you !? I dare you !!! x)
Van Brunt Stillhouse from Brooklyn NY? I'm planning on visiting that distillery next weekend. I sampled their bourbon at the American Whiskey Bar in midtown NYC a few months ago. I'm not a huge bourbon fan but this was quite amazing. I'll try to pick up an extra bottle to send to them for review!
I really like Arran too. But my gf is named Erin so I may be biased. ;) Her last name is Williams too and I joke her that Rex is actually her long lost uncle no one wants to admit is part of that family. Haha
Rex my girlfriend thinks you are beautiful and that i should cut my hair to look more like you. I already have the scraggly beard and large forehead, should i go for the full Rex look?
Rex Recipe: frequent FULLbody waxings (not the head or face) no heavy lifting, diet exclusively comprised of toaster strudel and Chinese food, and binge watch lots of Squidbillies.
Today was a first for me...I went to a distributor tasting just over a week ago for Arran 10, 14, 18, Port and Sauternes Finish. I didn't like a single one. First time I've disagreed with your tastes. #shrimpcocktail
Arran 14 the same price as Lagavulin 16??? Lagavulin 16 is $35 more expensive here in Ontario, and Arran 14 is almost unfindable. Also, how could a Magnificent Bastard nosing kit NOT include Rex's famous Irish Butter Cookie, Peanut Butter, and Daniel's renowned "Orange with the cloves in it"? Come on now !
My claim is that Daniel's beard is "fragile." Take a step back and look a fresh at it... If you have a battery powered beard trimmer close at hand... remove the guard from it... one quick move with it on and you'd get the entire front part of the beard. That thing just hangs out there crying out to be chopped off. No, really! Take another look. Cheers!
Im really getting sick of the blatant disrespect that the mooch shows for the somm, who is the provider of the whiskey for the mooch. One would think with the amount of whiskey this guy has mooched from the somm that he would show some damn appreciation towards the somm. Stop biting the hand that feeds you whiskey, mooch. And feel free to exact revenge on the mooch, somm. Perhaps some laxative in his whiskey would teach him a much needed lesson
I was out of whisky so I “Arran” down to the liquor store, bought a bottle, and “Arran” back home to watch the rest of this magnificent review! 🥃😏🥃
For a variation on your toast:
“Here’s to lying, cheating and stealing.
If you’re going to lie, lie about your age. If you’re going to cheat, cheat death. If you’re going to steal, steal someone’s heart.”
Quite fitting for a savvy sommelier and a magnificent mooch!
I bought my first bottle of whiskey two days ago, it was Wild Turkey 101 which costs $40 where I live for a liter. Sir, you have just placed your first step on the road to mooching glory! 🥃

Anyway thank you for the great videos and may you forever be magnificent.
Love the wallflowers reference. “Just like sugar and tangerines” one of their best tunes. I have this bottle on hold. Will be getting it this Saturday just in time for my annual whisky and wibs bbq!
Arran!!! Good choice Daniel 👌😊🥃!
Love what you guys do
Lagavulin 16! Yes! Love it!
Daniel has a much more discerning palette than Daniel. That’s largely due to the fact he’s remained a purist and only eats Pop Tarts.
you all probably dont give a damn but does any of you know a way to get back into an instagram account??
I stupidly lost my account password. I love any assistance you can give me!
@Anders Zion Instablaster :)
Been meaning to try this one for some time, sounds lovely!
You’re absolutely right about Lagavulin 16. I have had that experience, it being much lighter after some other whiskies.

Always something new and refreshing on your reviews - today “how does it make you feel?” 👌😊🥃!!
Arran 10 is also fantastic! Seems like a fine range all around.

Love Arran! Can't wait for their new Lagg distillery to open!
Always entertaining guys, thanks! Would Oban be a good comparison? minus the peat notes?
@David Howard thanks, I agree.
This was a comment from years ago. No doubt in my mind today about Arran’s positioning over the years vs less exciting Oban offerings
Love Arran. All of it!
Nah, it won't matter. When you let it air, that can happen in the glass as you pour. Just let it rest a bit and sip it slowly. It will change slightly over time. Best to not let that happen in the bottle.
The port cask Arran is another great dram.
Daniel, question

It doesn't, actually. The law only requires it be "aged in oak barrels". It doesn't specific new or use, and it doesn't specify what they should have held previously.
Historically is was sherry barrels before bourbon.
Are you guys able to get Black Douglas 12 over there? I'd like to hear what you have to say about it.
The tasting kit is missing 'Green' !! :P
By sparkly and effervescent, are you referring to the similar almost champagne bubble-like tingle that Talisker 10 has all over your mouth?...it's not quite an alcohol burn feeling, but not quite as soft as carbonation...
It’s the mermaid tears in Talisker tickling your tongue......enjoy it!
Tried the buttered pop tart this weekend......kinda shitty. Now a buttered strudel with cream on top. Priceless
What difference or benefits does a natural cork vs synthetic cork for a bottle of whisky
That’s simple......Natural cork is “natural” and synthetic cork is “unnatural.” 😜🥃😜
I feel Rex missed a final comparison when you broke out the Lagavulin. Surely the peated Arran, Machrie Moor, would have been perfect to bring everything together. The cast strength is on of my favourites

lol
Would you compare this to Tomintoul 14 ?
After spending all day playing with the kids, I told my ten-year old “hey, I’m going take a break for ten minutes and watch a TH-cam video.” He said, without missing a beat, “the Mooch and the Somm?” I couldn’t stop laughing.
Mooch and Somm! Hey that’s a great name for a brand of whiskies!
Just have to say......love the Arron!! It’s so drinkable.......now I’m sad that I’m at work!
If you drank at work you’d eventually be neither (unhappy or at work)! Lol! Tight lines, fellow fly fisher!

Might want to give Glenmorangie a try as well, in the $30-$35 range in Indy.
I don't care what you try next, just don't judge Scotch by JW Red. Almost anything you try will be better.
Luke Holmes YES! Good picks! 🥃👍🏻
Arran 14 is a great whiskey. Almost finished with my bottle.

Elijah Craig is good stuff and not overpriced
I second the motion for Larceny for a great budget bourbon.
Hello my favourite whisk(e)y guys on the internet!

My favourite Arran malt is the Amarone finish. So rich!
And I was shocked at how absolutely affordable it is.
So to clarify...The Arran Amarone finish is only around $80 CAD (which is significantly less than Lagavulin 16 in my area).
It's a NAS, not a 16, it might have between 3 and 5 yo. So yes, sure it can be cheaper!

I like the idea, that from time to time Daniel or Rex (mostly Daniel :D ) will pick whisky for review.
Hooray for the Wallflowers’ “Josephine” reference! Great song, enough to make me want to drink summa dat Arran...
Do u have the Arran Amarone in the vault? Im in the process of gettting another donation together but I'm trying to decide what to send. I really love that stuff and have bought 2 bottles of it. Its extremely fruity, which usually isn't my thing, but man is it good. Think you'd enjoy it.

Daniel looks like a miniature James Yeager lol
Best beard sparkle.
3 words: Jameson Black Barrel. You've teased us that it's coming for a while
Hey guys, i have a request :p
I would like to see your try the Caol Ila Moch and compare it with the 12yrs old one.
Since the Moch is non aged statement, i suppose it should be younger, but they are priced the same, and i would like to know which one you prefer best.
That would be cool and intresting, guys !
Cheers from Belgium !
Hey guys what are u guys what type of barrel going to finish your whiskey in
Sir, once again.....in English please. Mind the word order and please use punctuation. Rock on brother!
very informative and not much jack-assry, it must be the first shoot for the week
Anyone else watching Lost In Space and feeling nit picky? They mention “Orkney peat” and then spend the rest of the season drinking Lagavulin instead of Highland Park?
Maybe I’ve gone too far up my own ass.
That’s what happens when they hire SciFi writers who only drink pink wines and gourmet lattes. They need MBs who know what they are talking about! 🥃😏
You're an anorak now. Enjoy!
Regarding the "soap" tasting notes, I'd bet my entire collection that Rex likes cilantro and Daniel doesn't.
Note that "my collection" budget primarily affords me Wild Turkey 101 and Rittenhouse rye.
Boots, Do you even lift bro?
And Yeah, in the beginning there was but one, and one was the counting of the magnificent bastards in the beginning! Then, yeah, there was another and another and another and another, but the original magnificent bastard , Daniel of Whittington, still remained. As a shepherd was he unto them, leading his flock of bastards of magnificence to major malty mentoring meetings and yeah, they became even more MAGNIFICENT (well, at least as magnificent as bastards can become when malt motivated) and they eventually multiplied beyond all counting and spread their message of malty love across the face of the Earth! 🥃 Amen 😉
PS And some loopy dude named Tex......I mean Rex helped out a little bit too! 😜😉
Is it PEATY at all? Lagavulin 16 is.
does any one know if there is a company using old ice whine cask to age whiskey
nm Glenfiddich Winter Storm: 21 Year Old Ice Wine Cask Single Malt answered my own ?
DENMARK! haha we make whisky to :´D
Jameson 12-year Distillery Reserve
Dafuq? I just opened this one 2 days ago. Perfect!
Still with ya, Daniel. That abomination of a pastry called a "Toaster Strudel" is barely fit for the circular file!
Pop tarts never made the cut even after being plied with your "Irish butter". Maybe try caviar or truffles on your Pop Tart next time
Love the arran 10, might have to look for the 14 now. Curses to my wallet.
I got so angry the other day when I couldn't find my stress ball

Stillhouse in the little red cans? That’s whiskey? Hmmm! Who knew! I thought it was bore solvent! 🥃🐬
Next I guess Rex is goin' to say he don't like beef or football either!
We, the pweeple, demand the #MoocheNecklace return. It has just been too long.

The Hobbitses keeps his secrets from us! The book! The boooook!!!! Smeagle wants the boooook!!!
Bald is beautiful baby! Bald is beautiful! 🥃
I really like Arran too. But my gf is named Erin so I may be biased. ;) Her last name is Williams too and I joke her that Rex is actually her long lost uncle no one wants to admit is part of that family. Haha
#chadweek

UnboundOdysseus aah I'm really aching to open up my lagavulin now.. =)
All kinds of Arran 14 down here in N.S. UnO. (and it's $69. Lag 16 is $130.)
Cheers!
Gotta move the whiskey around in your mouth for a few seconds before swallowing...you get more flavor and the finish lasts longer.
Just steal some old folks home curtains and put it in a jar. Antique.
Steve M - Many of us have long thought a good balding of Rex’s luxurious hair was in order.....his hair is the secret to his mooching power
Will not be available in the us anymore! Don’t drink anymore
Poptart
The fact that you both mispronounce Arran along with your useless banter has me blocked this channel . Talk less about you and more about scotch
