RIP the three members of Badfinger Pete Ham (April 27, 1947 - April 24, 1975), aged 27 Tom Evans (June 5, 1947 - November 19, 1983), aged 36 Mike Gibbins (March 12, 1949 - October 4, 2005), aged 56 You will be remembered as legends.
This song is such classic Paul, you can tell even in the Badfinger version. The first time I heard it I thought "woah, is this a Beatles song I've never heard?"
Either way McCartney wrote the song and his demo (which was basically finished) was produced by George Martin on the Beatles 1996 Anthology 3 album. Therefore it is part of the Beatles catalogue. But, I agree I wish the Beatles themselves put their touch on it and released it at the time. Im confused as to why it isn’t credited Lennon/Mccartney like every other song he wrote in the 1960’s including the song Goodbye for Mary Hopkins. Keep in mind Mccartney was the only Beatle on songs like Yesterday and Blackbird.
It's sad that the guys from Badfinger who originally recorded this song took their own lives never thinking that fans would still be listening to their recordings many years later as time went by. It's easy to lose faith in yourself when you're young but there is always hope in the future no matter how dark the clouds may seem to be.
They were robbed of millions and their popularity had faded. They were basically left penniless. I can see their sadness and desperation leading to their choice to end their lives. It's so damn sad.
Not denigrating this, Paul is an absolute master. But I think about all the songs Prince has written for other folks, too. Some folks are just so productive, they write more than they could ever record.
Well, as far as money goes, the real dough is in the songwriting credit, not the performance, so he still rakes it in on this one even if he didn't record it. Likely, he made more off this song than Badfinger did. But it got them up and running.
When Paul gave the demo to Badfinger they wanted to put their own little spin on it but Paul said no, you must do it exactly like the demo because that's the hit. And instead of just having Pete Ham sing lead as was normal Paul had all the members of Badfinger have a go at the lead vocal and decided that bassist Tom Evans did the best job so he sung the lead on it. The song was the opening theme for the movie The Magic Christian with Ringo Starr and peaked at #7 in the US and #4 in the UK.
@@chipgaasche4933 He is! :) especially because he wrote more complex songs and this one is so unique and it includes just one of his many spontaneous stiles
It's hard to think of anyone, dead or alive, that can match Paul's instinct for melody. The material he wrote when he was a Beatle in particular was stellar, as good as any songwriter ever.
Yeah, there's a whole clip on YT of hits in the 60's that all kinds of other people did that were written by Lennon-McCartney. And they didn't exactly 'give them away' - the songwriter(s) still got songwriter's royalties with every record sold.
Saw him in Miami this year that man gave us a 3 hours performance and he is 75 he really doesn't need to do these concerts but you can see that he love to perform and for 3 hours he gave his best to me it was An spiritual experience long live Paul
It was written during the time the Beatles were together so it's a quasi Beatles song. Paul wrote it for the 1969 film "The Magic Christian" which featured Ringo. It's on one of their "Anthology" albums, and originally on illegally produced bootleg recordings.
When Badfinger got famous and started doing large venues, rumors spread that "Badfinger" was actually "The Beatles" performing either in masks or backstage with Badfinger as a lip-syncing front band.
John was in the control room watching Paul do it, and was asked to play but he said no. Either way, I'm always been dismayed this wasn't on Abbey Road...
Regardless of the quality of his voice, I hope he never stops performing because it he does (and I hope to God that I'm wrong) I don't think he'll be around long. I know he loves his wife and kids, but when you're arguably and currently the greatest entertainer in the world and a work-a-holic, that is your only motivator. It worked for Glen Campbell until he was unable due to disease. Keep on rockin in the free world Paulie.
The Italian intro wasn't bad...love this song but he did the right thing handing it off to Badfinger - they did a great job with it. Thanks for posting farco!
Evidence of Paul's amazing fanbase - the audience really know the song, regardless of the fact it's never been issued on an album, (aside from Anthology)... you can hear them singing in the background
Before buying the single in 1970 (along with Let it Be) I saw Paul's name on the apple label and thought The Beatles had changed their name to Badfinger. Hey I was 10 years old.
I told my friend when it came on the radio That's the Beatles! His sister about age 12 looked at me like I was dummy and told me it was Badfinger. I said it sounds like Beatles, she said Paul McCartney wrote it, smart kid she was, me not so much. 😀
I was there. This song was very warmly received by the audience. But Later on this tour Paul looked a little bit disappointed 'cause not all of the audiences he treated with this gem seemed to appreciate this song. In fact, after the last date in Liverpool this song has been dropped
@merseywhogirl I visited your city as a student back in 1987. I had the best time of my life! I'm glad Paul has come home to do what he does well. Saw him in Cincinnati in August. The show was brilliant! Cheers!
Awe, that's awesome! I knew Paul wrote it, and it stared in The Magic Christian w/Ringo. I knew when Paul heard Badfinger perform it he liked it so much he told them to use it. I never heard Paul perform it though! Great! Thanks!!!
Joey's voice doesn't do Badfinger tunes justice. he never was the lead singer. But he's the last member still alive, so he has a right to sing the tunes.

With the deaths of Badfinger's Pete Ham and Tom Evans, fans have been asking Paul for years to add this to his set list, especially after the Anthology version came out in 1996. He finally did in 2011, but the reaction wasn't as enthusiastic as he'd expected, so he dropped it.
Dan Henderson Odd that the reaction wouldn't have been stronger; I always loved this song. It was such a bright, colorful, blue skies and sun in the Springtime feel to it. Nice that there's a video of it.

Paul IS D write the song for the Iveys/ Badfinger FOR the "Magic Christian" movie, starring Starr and Sellers (and Rachel Welch!!). The lyrics go along with the theme of Sellers' character with his scheme and his millions ("...that there must be a catch....") and ("...fool and his money....").
It is now part of the Beatles catalogue (it’s basically a finished song as George Martin Produced it for Anthology) as Come and get it can not only be found on The Beatles Anthology 3 (1996), but also on the Abbey Road 50th anniversary box set (2019). I went to see "Magic Christian" in the movies and I thought it was the Beatles singing.(obviously way back when). I believe that George Harrison was instrumental in signing Badfinger to Apple.

Wonderful to see Paul enjoying playing one from his back catalogue
To the greatest song writer of all time, this was a give away song, i would have given my right arm to have just wrote this one song.
Love it. Then again he would know how to do it. RIP the Badfinger members who passed
Unbelievably catchy song. The man is a master.
Yes, but it still didn't save Badfinger. Sadly.
Wonderful band. And they wrote plenty of their own great music. One of popular music's great tragedies.
Unfortunately, nothing could have saved Badfinger. One of the saddest stories in rock history. Such a shame.
John Tabacco m'
Killer song. This song would have fit perfectly on Abbey Road. He recorded his demo around those sessions. I can listen to this all day.
It really should have been on Abbey Road.
Replace Maxwell with CAGI
OH_I _Will , or keep both.
I liked badfingers version better I’ve listened to Paul’s demo
On July 1969, Paul recorded it. It’s a shame it never made the cut on AR. It’s a damn good song. However, Badfinger did the good work on it as well..,

Nostalgic memories Pete and Tom, thanks Paul for the lyrics and the guys for making it possible.
Paul wrote so many great songs that he has to peek at a cheat sheet of his own lyrics! Love it.
Ahhh man I got goosebumps from the fans screaming SONNYYYY🥲🥲🥲🥺🥺🥺❤️❤️❤️❤️ you can’t not love this song.
Paul & Badfinger!!
