Trading Beta Pokémon to Pokémon Gold - An Adventure!

  • This video was originally created over half a year ago. However, prior to publishing it, there were a few changes I would've liked to have made to the video, so I kept it unlisted. In the midst of IRL stuff and 2020 being... 2020, I'd forgotten about this video and at some point misplaced the raw video files. I only realised this mistake a few days ago when I was planning my next set of videos. This version is complete, but I would've liked to have changed up the formatting to make it a bit easier to read, among other stuff (fixing small errors, writing JP names better, demonstrating later leaked beta versions, etc.). Anyway, with that out of the way, the original description follows.
    This video is a little different to my usual fair, as instead of just showing a beta Pokémon being sent from the Spaceworld demo through to Generation 2 with some ACEing (which frankly, would've been boring), I decided to cover a thought process of sorts in getting beta Pokémon over to Generation 2, as well as discussing the various issues that I thought would arise, as well as dealing with the actual issues through some good ol' ACE. I don't know if I'll use this type of format for upcoming Pokémon videos (spoilers from seven months after typing this, I don't) but hey, it's something new :)
    I'd received quite a number of comments concerning if it was possible to trade beta Pokémon from the Spaceworld demo up to Generation 2. Initially, I said no, since directly connecting the two versions doesn't work, and using Generation 1 wouldn't work because of the conversion process. See, not only was I taking into account (albeit somewhat incorrectly) the types changing, but the resulting Pokémon not being "representative" in the final version. Trading a beta Murkrow from the Spaceworld demo to Gen 2 and having it become a Phanpy isn't representative, for example. It wasn't until I tried to trade one of the beta starters (despite my presumption of the trade conversion messing up the types) to Generation 2 and seeing that it actually worked that I realised I wasn't seeing the bigger picture.
    So, for the tl;dr;dw: Yes, you can send beta Pokémon from the Spaceworld demo up through to the final Generation 2 games, however the Pokémon must still be representative in the final versions (which might seem subjective, I'm actually talking about the internal IDs matching), and the types must have survived through to the final game. That only includes a very small selection of Pokémon. Outside of this, you can always use ACE to fix all of this (swapping IDs, types, etc) but I feel like going overboard with ACE detracts from the original point here.
    I said Mew was indexed at 18, when it is actually indexed at 15. Whoops.

      Nintendo did say that coding a pokemon is more complicated than it first appears. There is a program only for Windows XP and Windows 7 to allow you to create your own pokemon for the Pokémon Game Boy Advance games. I guess that it works since the user hosting it is still paying off to this day. There is even a video showing someone's Nintendo DS realistically being blown up upon encountering a certain pokemon in the grass. It was no way that the system being completely destroyed was special effects.

      Sure, it should be possible by transferring a Gold/Silver save file with the traded betas onto a softmodded 3DS, then using the Pokémon Bank/Home to move them to modern games.
      You'd need a Japanese version of Gold/Silver VC and of course the Pokémon would be beta in name only at that point.

    An additional sidenote about the Time Capsule checking for correct pokemon typing:
    In gen 1, you can actually change a pokemon's primary and secondary type through the use of the "8F" Item and Arbitrary Code Execution.
    While the status screen may still display an abnormal pokemon's typing as if nothing had changed, if performed correctly, the game will still remember the changed typing deep in the game's code.
    Additionally, it is also possible to catch glitch pokemon from gen 1 with index values that just so happen to line up with Johto Pokemon and their corresponding index values from gen 2, ironically, through executing the "catch em all" code using 8F to obtain said pokemon.

    One of the abnormal pokemon typing shown in the video was indeed incorporated somewhere in the pokemon original development, which explains why the typing worked perfectly fine when being traded from game to game. Nintendo even hoped that someone would eventually figure how to trade them over from the beta versions of the game eventually with them saying something like they were programmed to be fully compatible with the full releases of the game while they were getting initially designed.

Sorry for the huge quantity requirements, my assembly knowledge is pretty poor and optimising it for items is worse lol. I could lower the quantities but it'll mean getting stuff like TM50 and doing stack splitting.

      @joshernsteen2066 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Nintendo likely prepared for this kind of situation already. They probably have to follow the guidelines that they already established at least 2 decades ago. They probably mentioned that someone in the future would eventually figure out it, and they wanted to make sure that the pokemon caused no harm to the game that it was transferred to.

    • @joshernsteen2066
      @joshernsteen2066 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I know that they were talking about the possibility of them making a place for pokemon to be in a single location from all the games. They obviously did not know how they were going to be doing it at the time, they must have been at least planning out theoretically how it could be coded to work in the future. I know that Nintendo talks and saves everything while it is still on their mind, possibly they had to resort to their notes to confirm how they wanted the pokemon shapes, and sort categories to be arranged for the final release. It was definitely something that they were at least wanting to possibly look at, just in case in the future that they werr going to forget the specific details later on. The article with them talking about it is actually really interesting to read, if I am recalling correctly. I first thought the article was not telling the truth, and then I remembered that it was Nintendo talking about the details. Nintendo has always been honest with what they have been talking about, even talking about non video games related topics. They have a very strict lawyer based company that makes sure that they stay within the Iines of their contracts, and they did try to release the episode abou the Zapdos festival earlier than the intended release date schedule; despite the lawyer website clearly stating the series, season, and episode number even way back then.

    • @joshernsteen2066
      @joshernsteen2066 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I cleanly knew exactly what every bit of the details were in the episode, minus who Noibat even was, and what are going specifically involving it in the episode. They were able to include Bonnie inside of the show a lot earlier than many of you people reading the comments are likely thinking. I am probably not allowed to say anymore about this particular topic, but I really do not that much about it anyways. I only found the information with them talking about it. The two part Ninja episodes is actually preceded by an absolutely amazing episode that Nintendo made over 2 decades ago with them writing a note on the screen to remind themselves to continue on with the idea in the future.

    Types are stored in the Pokemon data? Surprised that isn't pulled from a lookup table for the species.

    • @glitchymess
      @glitchymess  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It is when the Pokémon is first generated (either wild, trainer battle, etc.), as you'd expect. After that, type info is stored with all the other data that's relevant to battling in RAM. It's done for type effectiveness checks, as far as I can tell.

    • @joshernsteen2066
      @joshernsteen2066 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The pomemon data and look up tables are completely different things based on my prior experience with similar item categories. Once you look deeper into how certain items actually function inside of a system, then you will fully understand what I am talking about. Nintendo probably made certain that a little kid could understand exactly how the two tables operate for the original games. More than likely, the person who does not want to find the specific items tends to find the items, while the people actually interested in them do not even know where to look.

    • @joshernsteen2066
      @joshernsteen2066 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Genshin impact made that point very clear with Paimon very clearly stating that there is a purpose to the net that you will eventually get given to you, but you will only able to recall where the exact location is before you have the actual item. Strangely she never even says that in the game. The way that hiw explains it is exactly how someone would respond back to quesion matter being talked about. From my understanding Paimon is watching the main character more closely than she is willing to admit. The actual response might be classified, and can only be talked about if the situation has to be talked about. Nintendo makes clear point very clear on that subject matter, with only talking the one specific issue that I am maybe aware somewhere not even remotely linked to their main page. I also triggered it by accident many years ago, and they even said that they had to tell me the information because of the circumstances that I was in. It actually is the base selection sprite board that they are trying to intentionally avoid in the game from being triggered. I know this because after the cutscene happened, the game played like normal after I exited out the door. The game still responded back with different text, but the game still played out like normal.

    • @joshernsteen2066
      @joshernsteen2066 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It actually did occur in the game, and I definitely checked out the movers again immediately to make sure that the game was functioning correctly. Maybe it also shows that they did infact program a game surrounding them as sprites maybe, but they are being cautious because of the spies in the building. The way it was scripted would make it appear that the incident never happened at all since they do not want footage of it talked about online, or anywhere public. If they did actually end making the game a reality, that could possibly explain Throh and Sawk being included in Pokemon Black and White. My guess is that the trainer with the information would be on a mountain terrain. Probably a very specific GameShark triggers the fight, and that they would request you to put away all and any recording devices, including phones, prior to doing the fight. Unfortunately the better fights and cutscenes are stuff that do not record in the first place, partly due to forced restrictions.

    • @joshernsteen2066
      @joshernsteen2066 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      They are not against recording certain cutscenes in the game, it is just when it occurs the person does not have the method of getting the footage saved somewhere. That includes either Solrock or Lunatone appearing on a copy of the game only say that you have to trade for it in the other version of the game, and you are unable to catch me; I was designed only to alert the person playing the game. I believe that I actually triggered something in the game, but I could not proceed with the fight because I did not have the right credentials met or something like that.

    • @joshernsteen2066
      @joshernsteen2066 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think that it actually is a check confirmation of a button being checked off as I believe that I found it by a complete accident and did not want to touch it to find out what happens. There even is a warning label on it saying to have the option checked on at all times. The message even said something along the lines of certain pokemon types might not that able to go through the Time Capsule when I did turn off the button, just because I was curious to see what would happen. They must have made this specific check one of the first things that they did when they made the games to make it have an option setting like that placed on there. Certain other operating systems have a similar format with a specific warning label placed on the certain sections of the program. I actually believe that they talked about it in an really early interview with them talking about the game. They must have made it an external link to avoid themselves from clicking on it by accident, during development and in the future. I believe that Nintendo even knew that someone would type this exact response back to this exact thread as well.

    Wow this was really interesting I would have never thought that trade pokemon between beta gold and the official game would be possible and convert some of the beta pokemon into the finished pokemon. It would have been really interesting to know how "legal" is that cyndaquil in the new games and it would be pkay for the system, although unfortunately its impossible due to the lack of way to trade from 2 and 3 generation games.

    • @joshernsteen2066

      There is already a way to transfer pokemon from Gen 2 to Gen 3 despite Nintendo telling you it is impossible to do. The video has been up fof 5 years now to find on TH-cam. I would assume that Nintendo thougjt about it way advance and made sure that it was still perfectly legal to have in your game. I am not sure about Pokebank accepting it though, it probably has to obey certain technical limits before it can actually be allowed through. I might have slimly came across Nintendos legal viewpoint on this matter scoping around the internet.

    • @glitchymess
      @glitchymess  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Not really. Glitch Pokémon's stats are usually sourced from garbage data that gets interpreted as actual data, so some having real looking types is just coincidence.
      Plus, that Ice type in particular was a false type, having a blanket 1x effectiveness against all types and no weaknesses (like all glitch types).

    • @joshernsteen2066

      Nintendo definitely said that the concept of doing this procedure was complicated to explain to anyone who is not technology experienced in this specific category. I do not think that they actually said that but they were likely thinking about saying that statement. I know that a really early interview with them talking about the game explains their side of the story here. Possibly could the same exact one that I got my other information from with them regarding the way the beta process pokemon were initially talked about.

    I wonder if you could trade a beta Pokémon to a virtual console game, then transfer it up into Bank and Home

      I believe that Nintendo made sure that the pokemon was perfectly safe, and did not damage any game that they knew would eventually get released in the future. They tend to know of their plans way before they actually incorporate them into their final in some, way, shape or form. I know that they sure that the beta pokemon could be transferred over the original pokemon games when they were being originally designed. I believe thslat someone has already done that already with them even saying they know that might not be the very first person to pull it off.

      It doesn't, sorry. I just edited the game's memory when interacting with Pikachu to give me the encounter.
      I didn't want to set up the Trainer Escape glitch and opted for a small visual gag like this. The outcome is the same, regardless.

    How did talking to Pikachu give u that glitch battle?

    • @glitchymess
      @glitchymess  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It didn't, I just modified the value at wCurOpponent ($D036 in JP Yellow) when I interacted with Pikachu (that's why there's a very small audio cut), and that triggers an encounter.
      I only did this because it'd be less boring to watch and quicker than doing the Trainer Escape glitch as normal.

      There is a way to back up your Gameboy Color saves, but unfortunately if you did not back it up prior; then the pokemon is lost.

      Because the audio is digitized to fit the Gameboy.
