Pokemon R/B - 8F for Beginners

  • (Read description for more information and corrections)
In this video, I will be going across the relatively quick and easy ways to acquire 8F and setting up bootstrap codes and item scripts, using quicker methods that some people may not know about yet, such as "dry" underflow or the semi-trainerless Mew Glitch and a quicker 233HP Pidgey.
    Useful links:
Big Hex List (very useful): glitchcity.info...
    8F ACE Thread: forums.glitchci...
Corrections and clarifications can be found here:
    • Dry Underflow and Kang...
At 15:50, I state that you can do the Trainer Escape Glitch to obtain an easy Kangaskhan. What you should do instead is catch an 'M while you are duplicating X Specials, then feed it a Rare Candy so it evolves into a Kangaskhan. Just make sure you have room in the party if you catch a Level 0 'M to avoid a crash.
When you are doing the Dry Underflow, I would recommend you remove all items from your bag, either by tossing or storing them in the PC. This will ensure that when you attempt the Dry Underflow your inventory will look like this:
    x1 Any Item
    x1 Any Item
    x255 X Specials
    Cancel
How do I tell how many items I have above x99?
When viewing item stacks above x99, they will appear as glitch text that changes based on the current tileset. Refer to this image, which uses the Pokemon Center tileset, to work out the items quantity:
    goo.gl/eW9oeJ (Credit to TheZZAZZGlitch)
What are the other potential bootstraps?
The one mainly used in the video was this bootstrap (cred. Pigdevil2010)
Exactly 5 Pokémon in the party:
    -Pidgey with 233HP
    -Parasect
    -Onix
    -Tentacool
    -Kangaskhan
There is a more compact bootstrap, but it requires hard to obtain glitch Pokemon, unless obtained via Catch 'em All script:
Exactly six Pokemon (not all scripts work with this):
-h Poke (hex:C3, Mew Glitch Stat: 195) (Have a Gengar registered as owned to avoid Pokedex entry)
    -Onix
-M p'u ゥ (Hex:D3) (Revive x211 in the Catch 'em All script or trade a Pichu via Johto Guard Glitch)
-Remaining three Pokemon of your choice.
Item Scripts used in the video:
Catch 'em All (alt version), just be careful with acquiring certain glitch Pokemon that may change item or item quantities:
    -Any item
    -8F
-Repel x(Quantity = Index, e.g. x97 gives Sandslash. See Hex List link)
    -X Speed x14
-Ultra Ball x64 (Change to a different item to change Level, refer to the Hex List for the item that corresponds with that Level, e.g. Repel = Lv30)
    -TM05 x72
    -Lemonade x201
Instant Hall of Fame (cred. wack0)
    -Any Item
    -8F
    -Awakening x 22
    -Carbos x100
    -X Accuracy x187
    -X Attack x 64
    -TM05 x214
    -Revive x201
    Steal trainer Pokemon (cred. ChickasaurusGL)
    -Any Item
    -8F
    -Lemonade x1
    -TM34 x87
    -TM08 x201
    Clone Daycare Pokemon (cred. Skeef)
    -Any Item
    -8F
    -X Accuracy x72
    -Carbos x218
    -Max Revive x01
    -TM01 x1
Walk through Walls - Ledge Method (cred. TheZZAZZGlitch)
    -Any Item
    -8F
    -TM34 x20
    -TM15 x201
So, this is my first attempt at a full on tutorial, so I apologise if the format is a little choppy. I tried to keep it as simple as possible but I didn't expect it to come out at just under half an hour long, oops, I think I could've shortened down a few clips to be honest. There's definitely improvements to be made which will be carried over to the next tutorial, if I do make a new one. Basically tl;dr trying it out to help some people.

To get a Missingno. early in the game, use Brock through walls to catch an Abra, and head to Saffron. Set that as your healing spot, and teleport away from a trainer on the route below. Then go fight against the Machop owned by the first trainer in the fighting dojo. Go back to find Missingno. Tell me if I screwed up the instructions...

    • @DJIncendration
      @DJIncendration 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

It is impossible to turn screws in a set of instructions, but there's another way to get missingno and item underflow that's a bit faster. After being able to walk through walls, go to Serulian and enter the cave. Get an encounter with a Ditto, and catch it. Switch it to the front of your team, and get into another battle, with a pokemon with 2 or more moves. Let Ditto use Transform, and then swap the first move with the second. This will give you the Cooltrainer move. You can either run away and get into another encounter, or use Cooltrainer right away. This will give you Missingno. Catch it, toss two of the sixth item, and get into another encounter. Use Cooltrainer again, catch the Missingno, and view the stats of a regular pokemon before using an Escape Rope. Make sure you have at least one, because when you try to exit normally, you won't be able to move.

Thank you so much for this guide. However, Italian gamers may be disappointed to see that it don't works. Using 8F (7°P in ita), simply nothing happens. I read almost all comments on different YT videos, until I found the problem: 1) use graveler instead of onix. 2) Use 5 additional X accuracy (so 124 instead of 119). Hope this could help someone.
P.S. This also applies for all european versions (German, Spanish and French for sure).P.P.S Remember that the F in 8F means "Floor" so you must search for the according instrument (e.g. in french is 7ème étage, 7S in german, and so on)

    • @glitchymess

Yep, it works in other languages but I believe you need to change the bootstrap Pokémon. The process to get 8F should be mostly the same, though the item is called S7 in the German version. As for the bootstrap Pokémon, you'll need to get a Graveler instead of an Onix, I think.

    • @glitchymess
      @glitchymess  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks!
To keep it brief: When you first set up the glitch, you interrupt the game processing a trainer walking towards the player. If you head back to that route before you either a) fight another trainer that walks up to you, or b) talk to the Pewter Museum Guide and have him lead you, then nothing happens since the game still thinks a trainer is in the process of walking up to you. Fighting another trainer/Pewter Guide finishes the walking process and allows the battle to trigger when you return to the route you started the glitch on.
As for a full (I assume text) guide, if there are any recent ones then I'm not aware of any. I made this video initially due to the lack of them or video guides for more casual players at the time. • @glitchymess
      @glitchymess  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

I'm a little rusty on this, it's been a while, but the throwing of the additional stacks of X Specials is to underflow the item count and it kicks you out of the menu when it reaches zero or goes under. If you're able to go back into the menu and go past Cancel and do the rest of the glitch as normal, you're fine. If not, I believe you need more throwaway items (any item) before the X Special stacks and then just try again.

As for Kangaskhan, you could catch an 'M through the Old Man Glitch (provided you don't have a default name, if memory serves me right) and have that level up into a Kangaskhan. Saves you from messing around with the Safari Zone or the Mew Glitch.

      @glitchymess  5 ปีที่แล้ว

@@Leto85 Ah alright, that's totally understandable. The only real issue with 'M is if you deposit it into the PC at Level 0, crashes the game if you try to withdraw. The Hall of Fame Corruption aspect of 'M/MissingNo is pretty minor and can be fixed by beating the Elite Four again. Still, it's pretty cool that you're working on a living dex. You're probably already aware of this, but I'll mention regardless that the Mew needs to have certain things changed, such as the Trainer ID etc., otherwise the Pokémon Bank ignores it.

I don't recall specifics anymore, but for the PC, the game just checks if you're standing in a specific spot and inputting A, and the game only prevents accessing menus, not using them, iirc. There's other situations like this, but the PC is convenient as you can save and reset to unset disabling menus.

Using 'M is fine for duplication (also faster because you can use it to get Kangaskhan for the bootstrap). The whole X Special getting stuck thing depends on your item count when you go to Dry Underflow, since you're desynchronising the item count, and the amount of tossing and switching required to underflow is based on the count.
Regarding getting the wrong item when you're in Celadon, you can just walk backwards, since the item is based on your X Position on the map.

If you're able to set up 8F, you can use this to get any item:
      8F
      Any Item x1
      TM03 x141
      Revive x201
I think this changes the item you have as the Any Item to whatever is next in line (so TM01 becomes TM02, etc). It's repeatable, so I'd suggest checking the Big HEX List to find the closest accessible item to the one you want to get, then use 8F as many times as needed. Since you're looking for TMs, you're probably gonna want to put TM01 in that slot, which you should be able to buy at the Celadon Store. If TM01 becomes HM05 after using 8F, change the Revive to Full Heal x201. I can't remember which is which, sorry :/

@@ΑλέξηςΝικολαΐδης-η6ο You could either redo the dry underflow glitch and keep walking right through Celadon until you reach TM03 (I think it takes two loops of walking) or use this:
      8F
      Any Item x203
      Dire Hit x58
      Water Stone x4
      Max Revive x1
      Revive x4
      TM01 x1
This should set the Any Item to TM03 and set it to x0, you can then toss it from 0 down to x141 as needed for the main Get Any Item script. You could just use this script for general Item obtaining and just replace the x203 for the decimal index of the item (see The Big HEX List), but the other script is a bit simpler.

Clone the item twice by encountering MissinoNo or 'M, then tossing two TM08 (or any other item you're trying to clone), then catching the Missingno/'M(if it isn't Level 0) or encountering another MissinoNo/'M to get the item quantity to x255. Once you have your x255 item, toss the item until you get the amount you want. It will help to check the glitch number identifier image to work out what quantity of items you have, there's a link in the video description for the image, just keep in mind that the tileset that picture uses is for the Pokemon centre, so it's best to do your item tossing inside the Pokemon centre.

okay. I got these games the day they came out... I would have been the king of the playground if I knew these. At that time it was missingno on the east coast of the seafoam islands.. I am impressed that people have discovered this.. man.
So, of all the fun things we used to do with the game shark, the useless bouncing one is one I never saw, and the one that I havent seen at all which would be interested to see is the ability to play a trainer a second time. Any idea if this has been figured out again?
Catching and raising them was fun and all, but having to level up by training wild pokemon kinda sucked. I feel like that should have been exploited a long time ago.

    • @glitchymess
      @glitchymess  2 ปีที่แล้ว

Well, each map stores which trainers have been defeated on it as a byte in RAM. Setting this back to zero would reset all trainers for that map. Issue is knowing which address is for which map. But as an example, Route 6's defeated trainers flag is stored at $D7C9 in Red/Blue ($D7C8 in Yellow), so writing a very basic script to set that address to zero will basically act as a very basic VS Seeker.

    • @glitchymess
      @glitchymess  6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

rzeka Doing the old method of escaping a trainer, then battling another trainer is pretty limited, as you'd run out of trainers. However, doing the box switch method, you remove the need to battle a new trainer. As basic as possible, you save the game when switching boxes, so after you reset, the game still thinks the trainer you escaped from is still trying to walk up to you and the glitch is still active. Resetting allows use of the start menu and A button again (Accessing the PC before was possible because I assume the game just checks if you're standing on a specific spot and pressing A), but after finding a Ditto you'll need to go to Pewter's Museum Guide and have him walk you around to make the game finish the "Trainer Is Approaching" code, otherwise you'd head back and nothing would happen. After being walked to the museum, head back to wherever you escaped the long range trainer and it will finish up the glitch as normal without costing another trainer.
As for 'M > Kangkaskhan, that's also super convenient and I completely overlooked it.

alright so lets fix your issues
the description is a bit of a lie so this is what you need to acquire 8F.
    1x any item
    1x any item
    255 x specials
    any amount any item
    any amount any item
(the cancel button should be here)
so what you do is follow the steps as intended
if your cursor freezes or doesn't move or nothing happens
carefully press your B button a few times before something starts appearing.
then you can follow the rest of the steps right in this video
until you loop the celadon map, once you enter the celadon loop, explained by the titles changing, know this:
8F changes on your Y axis so you need to take a specific amount of steps like 8 so it changes to 8F, more or less causes 8F to change, once you obtain 8F you are free to bootstrap it and cause various other wacky shit to happen
    happy 8f'ing

I just managed to get 8F working using *zero* emulator save states, this means it should be possible to do it on real hardware. Unfortunately I can't find a video of someone doing this on real hardware.
When 8F's capabilities were first discovered, it was dependent on many glitches that were very hard to perform, but now, you can get it working using only some easy to perform glitches.

    • @glitchymess

Does this work for pokemon yellow on the virtual console. I just received a mew from the nugget bridge trick and I would love to pokebank it into my new game but the whole thing seems very confusing and quite frankly overwhelming but I'll give it a shot if it works.

    • @glitchymess
      @glitchymess  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

8F doesn't work on Yellow, as using 8F teleports you to a broken Pokemon Center which isn't very useful. Yellow does have its own form of 8F using another item named "ws m". I'm not completely familiar with using ws m but I believe the acquisition of the item, bootstrapping and item code is different, but works roughly the same way. Now I can't say for sure but I believe that if you took the item setup to make a Mew transferable work with Yellow's ws m then it should work, but I don't have VC Yellow so I wouldn't be able to check. I could try to string together a ws m tutorial, but as I'm quite busy nowadays I couldn't say for sure when I'd be able to make it.

Some of the glitch Pokemon you can get may modify items or item count, the same as how MissingNo/'M changes Item 6's count, which will alter what the code does drastically. So if you're gonna use the code to get the glitch Pokemon, be careful and check that the items are all correct and in the correct amount before using 8F to get the next one.

I'm not sure if I understand what you're saying, but this method doesn't work in Pokémon Yellow. Regardless, in order to get the x255 items during MissingNo duplication, you need to duplicate once, then toss two of the item that you're trying to duplicate, then encounter a MissingNo again and the item count for said item should now be x255.

For Pokémon Yellow, you need a glitch item called "ws m", you can look around for some guides on how to get it/use it and it's very similar to 8F in how it works, but there's a few differences.
For MissingNo, make sure that after you toss two items after the first clone to catch or find another MissingNo and the item should go to x255, though it'll look like x(glitch symbol)5.
