Most husbands and wives say goodbye to each other in the morning then head off to work for the day, but Grant and Laura you have such a wonderful relationship I like the way Grant allows you to struggle with the motor across the fields, me I wouldn't do that I would take the heavy load and leave Laura with the tools etc. However Laura you don't allow your gender to get in the way and its equal share of the loads and jobs. I cannot get enough of you two on the farm doing your country an important service making a living while feeding the nation and from what we see of you both you are enjoying every minute of it. love you both keep it coming guys.

Farmers can do anything with nothing but bare hands and minimal supplies. My paw paw farmed, raised cattle horses chickens everything to be self sufficient. He used bailing wire to fix or temp fix everything from plows to windmills to bridles and bed frames. Amazing the ingenuity farmers have.

Check the grass seed bag to see what percentage of seed is weed seed. If the percentage is high you may want to switch to one with less weeds. When you seed a blend of grasses, certain types of grass will only grow in cool weather. That's why landscapers overseed in spring and fall. With patience it should look nice by October.

So for GREAT GRASS attention is the key. if you seed and let it dry out you fail, to many weeds you fail, not enough starter fertilizer you fail, to much water you fail. So for me in the state of Washington we use a mix of fescue and rye grass. I would check with your local horticulturalist what is the best mix for you in Nebraska or ask at the local golf course what they use for their fairway/rough mix. I always use trip 16 as my starter and I spray 2/4/d as my broad leaf killer apply with a boom sprayer and tank on the back of your quad. You could aerate your young lawn and over seed so the seed has a place to fall and thus won't dry out as easily. For water set a flat bottomed container with straight sides out and you want 1/2 to 3/4 an inch twice a day or more if your climate requires it. Try to stay off the grass until it is 4 inches tall for a first mowing. Young grass is fragile and breaks off easily. A small walk behind mower is best for the first cutting, your big ride on zero turn will crush and rip out the new grass when you turn. Pick up your first cuttings after it is established do as you please. If you always want green lush grass water and timely fertilizer is key but that can be expensive. A beautiful lawn is like snow just another way to spell WORK. not hat you don't already have enough of that. Best of luck and if you have any questions just ask.

(The grass seed varieties you planted start better when planted in the Fall or Spring.) Some will grow but Seed the lawn again in September with just a drop spreader. In the early spring, crabgrass preventer followed by post-emergent weed killer in June to kill any weeds left. Next fall you will have your golf course.

My philosophy, coming from the transportation construction world, is to paint the ground with seed. We also use a small amount of oats or rye to get some root structure right away as well as some shading to help keep the weeds down until the real grass seed can germinate and start to cover the dirt. As the oats mature you can mow them off before they set seed. Also try using some mulch like oat straw or a light e-mat to hold the moisture in the soil better. When we built our house I put e-mat around the perimeter of the house and that is where our lawn came in the best.

    Grant and Laura:
With all the carrying you have to do, I'd get a couple of old backpacks, strip off the outer covering and make a frame. Then you could strap the motor unit to the frame and carry it out to the pivot. Use a second backpack, leave the canvas outer covering on, and use it to carry the tools. You could carry more with a lot less effort as well as add extra bolts and nuts to the backpack so if you drop something you can just dig into the backpack and get a replacement. You could also add bolt removal tools to the backpack so if you get corroded bolts you just pull out the tools to fix the problem.
If you can't get a backpack to size, get some canvas, go to a harness maker and have them make the compartment to the size you want.
Walking through the fields after a rain means you'll be soaked but it's clean water so you only have to be uncomfortable while you dry off.
As for the lawn, maybe bringing in sod pieces will help. Hope everything continues to go well.

leaping pedestals work well to ensure cats get the food, like tables. You simply put something stable the cat can walk up and jump from about 30 inches from a platform about 4 feet up they can land on. Then all you have to worry about is squirrels. So putting the food on top of an empty barrel and leaning a board up against a pair of nails in a joist a couple feet away will work fine. Skunks have a hell of a time with classic patio tables (hole in the center type) too.

For the pivots apparently all need to move at the proper speed based on the circular arc they are traveling as closer to pivot center is slower speed. Makes the most sense to have different gears at tire/wheel drive boxes than different speed motors. Fun watching you fix stuff and do it entertainingly.

Was it starter fertilizer with mesotrione in it? That’s what I use on new seed lawns, it works really good and is a good pre emergent. After a few weeks you can use that again or at least hit the grass with another shot of starter fertilizer. Also don’t just water once a day, when you have grass seed like that you should be watering 2-3 times a day depending on how sunny and hot it is. You DO NOT want it to dry out because the seeds once they get wet and start to germinate if they dry out they are done for.

A few things in regards to your lawn 1) Bluegrass and Fescue are slow to germinate and establish when compared to Rye. Fescue is the hardiest and most drought tolerant of the three main cool season varities, so you chose well, just give the grass time. 2) Be careful putting down fertilizer, and weed control during the heat of the summer, especially on a newly seeded lawn. The grass is under a lot of stress from the heat and it doesn't take much to burn out young grass 3) Same thing with crabgrass control, even though fescue and bluegrass are targeted by the crabgrass control, the newly seeded grass may be stunted. 3) Try to put down two applications of fertilizer in the fall once things cool down. One in mid mid-September another in mid- October. Try to find a fertilzer with slow release nitrogen and some phosphorous to help root development. 4) Try to put down liquid post-emergent weed control in mid-October. You will get better control than the granular products. I would add a surfactant to help the chemical stick to the waxy weeds 5) Next spring repeat what you did this fall. Fertilizing in late April and mid-May and applying post emergent weed control in early May. I would also add an application of pre-emergent crab grass control in early May. 6) Keep top 2" of soil moist, but not soaked. Even as things cool down this fall, keep watering until grass goes dormant in late October. Good luck and thank you for the great content.

I don't know if I would have picked fescue for that lawn. I doesn't seem to do real well in direct sunlight and takes a lot of water. It also tends to grow in clumps rather than spreading out to form a lawn. Since you've got irrigation you might think about just getting bermuda sod. If you give it reasonable water it can take all the heat you can give it and it spreads better than fescue. Just my opinion. To be fair I live a lot further south than you do. I do enjoy these videos about day to day maintenance on the farm so keep up the good work!

    • @rockymountainjazzfan1822
      @rockymountainjazzfan1822 ปีที่แล้ว

In the Plains states, a lot of people plant a mix of fescue and Bermuda grass. The fescue does better in cooler weather, the Bermuda better in hot weather. Fescue can tolerate cold temperatures better, so it will get green earlier in the spring and stay green later into the fall, but it will tend to go dormant in really hot weather. Bermuda grass does not like cold temperatures, but will stay green in very hot temperatures in the summer when the fescue is partly dormant.

Thanks for showing us the repairs on the pivot. Interesting. Can understand that water and electricity are a bad mix. Those electric motors are heavy. They have hot sun on them also.
Not to bad to change out. Pretty straight forward repair except for the wiring. These irrigation systems get a lot of wear and tear that is for sure.
Really important to you and your crops in the Nebraska land.

I'm so used to seeing Laura's pretty face matched up with her voice that I love to hear, I have to admit I was surprised to see Grant's young happy face instead haha. Pepper seems to be fitting right in on the farm and sure enjoys all the attention. We had a problem also with a young skunk a couple weeks ago who goit into the chicken yard and was stealing their food. One of the dogs got sprayed while we were showing it the door. Thanks for taking me along on todays adventure replacing the pivot motor. Laura, you mentioned the new busings were better and lasted longer. If it were automotve or tractor applications it would be because they were polyurethane. I recall reading that polyurethane can have problems associated with water where it can cause them to bubble. I'm wondering with the water involved with the pivot application, what is the material used for those bushings? Have a great weekend you two! Larry Central Valley, Ca.

I don't have a lawn anymore, but I used to use Weed-B-Gone mixed with a surfactant, and just walk the lawn and spray the individual weeds. I always found that the weed and feed types of granular fertilizers were better to help control the weeds after you got rid of the majority of them via spraying them individually. The other option, but it's a lot more expensive, is to use goat's blood. I had a neighbor that had it done, and his lawn had zero weeds. They mix it with something else, but I forget what it is. Probably the most effective, but the most expensive method.

I thought each wheel had its own motor. But this makes much more sense; one motor - less expense.

Have you two ever had a bug race? First thing you gotta do is draw a big Circle- 5,'6',~7' across (Big as you want *this is going to be the finish line). Then somewhere in the middle you draw a little Circle about 6" inches across (inside of this Circle is the starting area). Now all contenders what wants to race, they go out and find their beetle (No grasshoppers). When everyone is ready with a bug, then you put all of the bugs in the little 6"Circle. Now everybody gets outside of the big Circle, and THE RACE IS ON! There are some tactics. Bugs naturally want to Runaway from you. Get on away from the direction where your bug is heading [toward the finish line] and cheer him on from the direction that any of your opponent's bugs are headed for. Stay out of the big Circle- no blocking. No sand throwing neither. Blowing at an opponents' bug is acceptable. Stomping, Noise Making, All ACCEPTABLE... but NO SAND ! :P Any who fly out DISQUALIFIED!

Laura, you need to apply Tenacity herbicide (mesotrione) to kill the weeds in your lawn if the new grass is coming in still. If the new grass is already established then you should use PBI-Gordon Q4 Plus post emergent.

There is a solution to waiting for grass seed to create your lawn and fight through the weeds. It's called: laying sod. It may cost a little more up front, but the growers have already done the hardest work for you.

Provided the wires are easy or the same both ends to get at you can change two wires over either end to alter the Phase you can also buy Phase rotation testers

About now would be a good time to devise a way to strap the old pivot motors to the A-Frame for a ride out of the field. 😎

Never plant grass in the summer when weeds are prominent. Wait until very early fall and keep well watered. The grass should be well established before the first frost.

I've seeded a new yard and it takes some fairly intensive work for a few weeks to get it going. Your problem is you are planting a large area without any irrigation or straw cover to retain moisture. Spring and fall when temps are cool and dew is heavy really help establish a lawn. Had all of your grass sprouted and grown, it would have soon died from the hot sun and no or little rain. You actually have to keep the seed damp to sprout, then cool weather and light rain or sprinklers for the plant to grow and harden up. For your yard... about a dozen sprinklers ought to do it. Maybe 40 or 50 straw bales. If you use hay, the seeds within will sprout and will eventually die off with mowing.

That "round leaf" stuff in your lawn looks like purslane. It's an edible weed and I know I've seen it served in the salad bar in the Chicago Board of Trade cafeteria. I wouldn't eat it if you've sprayed it, but it's got kind of a tangy/salty taste.

Grant, I'm with you on the truck matter. Hard to stick with one for more than just a few years. Laura, seems like sod will be your only option to get the golf course lawn you are hoping for without waiting too long for it.
