Next to their double album "Untitled", Sweetheart is my favorite Byrds' album. It was so ahead of its' time. Roger McGuinn had to be dragged kicking and screaming to do it. There is nobody who has been able to blend country and rock music like Gram Parsons still to this day. He was way ahead of his time. He has influenced countless other musicians and he pioneered his own type of music and he has still not been given the recognition he so deserved. Without Chris Hillman getting Emmylou Harris and Gram Parsons together she would never have become the country music icon that she is. Emmylou Harris was a folk singer before she got together with Gram Parsons. She has always had the beautiful voice but her career was on a totally different path. If she had never gotten together with Gram Parsons she definitely would have become the country and Americana star. He definitely has changed country music for the better and he should be recognized for his contributions he literally changed the entire genre and he never had a hit record in his lifetime. So sad that he didn't get to see how much he changed the world of country music. Without Bernie Leadon getting into the Flying Burrito Brothers he would not have gone on to form the Eagles with Don Henley and Glenn Frey. There are so many people who have totally changed country rock music and they are all connected with Gram Parsons
Discovered Mr. Parsons and the Flying Burrito Brothers just a few weeks back. Why Mr. Parsons isn't in both the Country Music and Rock and Roll halls of fame is truly beyond me because his influence is pretty much apparent in music from 1970 on, namely, The Eagles, to name one. I wished he had lived longer. Would have loved to have heard what new sounds he'd come up with.
Yes. Some of the old school Nashville people had contempt for rock musicians. See Ralph Emery. However, Gram Parson should definitely be in the rock hall in Cleveland. It's hard to believe that he isn't. They should do it while Keith Richards can present him for induction.
I’m 23 years old and I’ve been listening to classic rock for about 15 years now. About 3 months ago I came across the Byrds and there began my journey into gram parsons. I really wish he would have lived longer because there isn’t another voice like his, nor is there music similar to his. His country with a hint of rock is the greatest thing this world has EVER heard 😇
@@TheRealShawnCrowe oh definitely! I just came across a song by the eagles titled “my man” and they literally say the words “hickory wind”. I was in awe 😳
If you ever get a chance, read one of his biographies. His life story is wild. Starts off really southern gothic and ends in excess and tragic infamy. I’m from NYC but when I first read his biography, totally by chance, I happened to be living in a town in Florida that neighbored the town where he was born. I had bought the book before moving to Florida and only happened to get to reading it while I was living there. Really put me in his shoes for the week or so I spent reading it. The smell of orange groves was literally coming through my window as I read about his family’s citrus fruit empire.
The song title and video is all super silly, but they never would have imagined that someone like me would be playing this in my room 50 years later and tearing up over it. It’s sad that Gram never lived long enough to see how much he influenced the future of music that came after and still continues today
Yup! Gram just seemed like one of those ppl you just feel like you've known forever. Rare thing. At the time of his death he was married and had a daughter. All of us in this time frame had been doing our own thing for many years. I compare kids to day and not all but kids are still at home, living with mom and dad, no job ect. Just a difference in the times I guess. When I look at Gram and take all this in, it makes me just respect the man he was not only in music but for trying to have a wife and family even though it didn't work out. Love Gram Parsons.❤

Since the age of 17, I have played this album more than any other. In good times and bad, its restorative powers remain undimmed, its beauty relentless. I return for the songs and their direct cardiac address. For the vocal harmonies, chapel and profane. For the hurt, crackled varnish of Gram Parson’s voice. For the swimmy pedal steel sluiced through a rotating Leslie amp. For the fuzz and the fog and the clarity. And for times lost and regained.

Probablemente una de las canciones más emotivas que haya escuchado jamas. Sin lugar a dudas el legado de The Flying Burrito Brothers y sobretodo Gram Parsons es inmenso. El country rock lo corrobora. Gran tema, gran album The Gilded Palace Of Sin y gran Parsons...
Having a major, major Gram Parsons binge at the moment. Just can’t get this song out of my head. Gram Parsons, a handsome, charismatic man and hugely talented individual. Dead at the age of 26, having destroyed himself with drink and drugs. I feel sad and angry in equal measure; a senseless waste, a terrible loss of potential. I finally realized that Graham must have been a huge influence on Nick Lowe-same style, attitude, etc. Lowe was a bit more of a rocker but they could have easily been twin brothers...
The bitter irony of Gram being totally rejected by the country music establishment... And yet here he's singing one of the greatest country ballads ever. And it's not tongue-in-cheek country. It's pure and sweet and true. (If a little bit messed up. Just like Gram.)
The Burritos were special. They may not have been the most professional band on the scene at the time but they certainly had the x factor as to what makes a band great. This is simply a magnificent song and beautifully sung.

I miss him so ....even to this day I met him 2/1968 I was 17 we stayed in touch until late 1970 ...such an awesome person ...fun times❣️ I never saw him do hard drugs! It was a sad day when I got a call Sept 1973 saying he was gone....to this day I don’t know who called me😢
I must admit, I had never heard of this song/band until the other day when a LP station in the middle of nowhere played the Mavericks cover of it. It prompted me to look it up. I'm hooked.
Been in love with Gram since I was a young teenager, September 19th, 1973 was a horrible day for this then young So Cal girl, the days of anticipation as they searched and found his remains, in Joshua Tree, were so sad. I loved his mugging Elvis lip, he will always be my boy, my old toy. ❤️💔🥰❤️
I dont think the subject matter is necessarily dark but I do see the cause and the EFFECT being what's so dark. Young love is so powerful and very frustrating and confusing. Being aware that you are compelled by love and not much you can do as far as how you feel and all the nuance and hints, clues, is enough to drive anyone crazy and into darkness. Sorry for ranting and being kind of vague, Love has became almost ineffable to me. This subject has been tripping people up for thousands of years so I dont see it stopping anytime soon. Peace & Love guys, estoy fuera ❤
@@nylontusk1289 Feeling defeated / overwhelmed by love is a sign that you're human! It has inspired the greatest art. From personal experience there are times in life when falling in love is both a spiritual elevation and a madness. We feel complete d by the other and see our soul gazing back at us in their eyes. Take this inspiration to creative and spiritual work and try to keep on a steady path. Often there is a period of disillusionment afterwards, when we realize that the beloved is human and fallible. Then we can feel tricked. It's not their fault, often. It's soul growth and a touch with the divine source in ourselves projected onto the other! All the best!
2016 we drove from NC to Joshua Tree Ca. to see the magic that Gram found. We found it, what a place. I wish a bit of ashes be placed anywhere around Skull Rock. RIP Gram.
Why did he leave. Love him still. This is my go to song. Miss him so much.Danm the good ones always die. He should not be in that grave,by himself. He should be under the Tree.
When I listen to songs from The Gilded Palace of Sin on headphones, I realize how important Sneaky Pete is to this sound. Gram is singing, but Sneaky Pete is providing the musical accompaniment and has the solo. His "commentary" throughout the song is a wonderful and critical backdrop to the singing.
Damn. Fantastic song by a fantastic band that was just starting to go places, until Gram Parsons passed away at thirty years of age in September 1973. If only he had laid off the drugs, he would have gifted all music lovers with more great songs. The Flying Burrito Brothers might have been bigger than the Eagles. Gram put the soul in “Hot Burrito #1”. No other singer could get it done. The FBB managed to forge on after Parsons’ death, but it just wasn’t the same. He was the heart and soul of the band. Random thoughts.

In the video clip, they spend most of the time fooling around: bassist Chris Ethridge and the drummer (I think it was former The Byrds, Michael Clarke) exchange instruments, and Parsons jokes with the camera and with his sunglasses. At the end, he even takes off his jacket and plays part of the final chords on the piano (he was a very competent pianist, which is how he briefly joined The Byrds just before forming the FBB). But her vocal performance is so heartfelt, so exciting, that not even her attempts at clowning in the video can tarnish it.
I love this song and video right here, as a singer songwriter myself I tell ya a delivery such as this does not happen everytime nor everyday. There was something magical about this to me. Just awesome the singing, the music, the video , I am a huge Gram Parsons fan too! Have watched this video over and over! Hoping to learn! All the best to you all! RIP GPs!
There's some grainy black and white live clips available. Wonderful, I thought. Try Gram and Emmylou Six Days on the Road live from Liberty Hall. Best wishes.
When I first heard this tune I could not get over the emotion and feeling. That was 1972 I think. After all this time it still has the grit and sorrow in it. Just think of the music Gram would have written.
I'll be damned if I haven't loved this song for more than half my life! I never get tired of it either. The Nudie suits really *do* add a certain something.
I most enjoy that Ethridge and Clarke switched instruments on this one. Also Clarke tunes his the bass in one of the shots. I love this video. A wonderful song
T S they were poking fun at the Nashville “establishment” at a time when the Nudie suit was the standard. Gram’s had pot leaves on his so he really flipping his nose at Nashville where he was not taken seriously. His using rock influences in his music had all the SoCal artists chasing after him. The Eagles, Ronstadt, Nitty-Gritty, Loggins and Messina, and anyone else you want to name, not to mention discovering Emmylou Harris and giving her exposure to the entire LA music scene.
RH421939 No. The hall only inducted the original line up. They didn't induct the "Sweetheart of the Rodeo" line up and Clarence White wasn't inducted as a Byrd either. In fact, Parsons was on the ballot a few years ago as a solo.
I wish Gram had lived long enough to know how beloved and respected he is as a pioneering singer-songwriter. Sadly, at age 26 he graduated a year ahead of the 27 Club.
What a voice. What songs. The one and only Gram.

I finally realized that Graham must have been a huge influence on Nick Lowe-same style, attitude, etc. Lowe was a bit more of a rocker but they could have easily been twin brothers...
why Elvis Costello ? ha
Yet, Keith Richard's is still kickin' it. They partied like the Toxic Twins
Gram, one of a kind. There will never be another
I had a dream about GP last night. Brightened my spirits!!
The bitter irony of Gram being totally rejected by the country music establishment... And yet here he's singing one of the greatest country ballads ever. And it's not tongue-in-cheek country. It's pure and sweet and true. (If a little bit messed up. Just like Gram.)
Such a great comment!
The Burritos were special. They may not have been the most professional band on the scene at the time but they certainly had the x factor as to what makes a band great. This is simply a magnificent song and beautifully sung.
Gram Parsons. The cosmic troubadour. A singer for now and all time.
Gram had the sweetest kind of melancholy.
That High Lonesome Voice..Definitely CMA OVER LOOKING AN AMERICAN TREASURE..saddens my ol soul to the Bone...Goodness Grace Happiness and Continued Grams charge to the Hall of Fame...Angels are Singing +
This is the perfect break up song from the boy's point of view, something we rarely hear.
His voice makes me cry cause he make you feel the hurt he is singing about
@@sandyjohnson3030 Have you heard his version of Wild Horses? Some say Gram wrote it and let Mick and Keith have it, because it sounds so much like a Burrito song than a Stones song.
Superb. Stellar vocals, exquisite songwriting, hot band, cool threads. Truly groundbreaking. Can't fault Gram on this one. The whole world blew it for not recognizing a good thing!
Not the whole world. Me and My brother and his friends all new it in 1968.
I agree they should have been huge. Gram was the man and deserved a lot more fame.
Written mostly by Chris Ethridge.
Gram was too beautiful for this world, I think.
I agree he was One of a Kind for sure and open doors for oh so many ! Missin Gram Let the Angels Keep Singin cause I wanna Hear Them ! ...
I agree wholeheartedly😢
so agree
There'll be people who don't realise just how DARK this is. So beautiful.
Oh I know. Boy, do I know.
@@deborahrobertson8606 thank you that's very thoughtful and I really appreciate it
@@nylontusk1289 great thesis though.
This track is epic! It's so damn original! He did invent Country Rock! God bless Gram Parsons and Chris Hillman, and Bernie Leadon!
The only lead instrument in the group at this time. Of Course its important. Outside of the Hot Burritos, I find Grams vocals thin and underwhelming.
They dont call him sneaky pete for nothing.
Sneaky Pete lol what a cool nickname 😆🤣🤘
@@nateburns3469 look out w that thinking (i agree) people posting here will hate you for youre opinion
@@nateburns3469 I dig his vocals on ohh Las Vegas, and return of the grievous angel as well... could be Emmylou Harris' addition adding to it though
I'm 37 and heard many old school bands and songs thought I would've heard this song and band but I haven't till now its a special little piece.
This song is a certified classic. Love the oldies
Super cool guy - the best singing voice - and exceptional timing...
He was only 26! Just a kid (at least from my current perspective).
older bro of gal classmate, rocking noise setup at their parents place,parsons,mc5,hot tuna, stanley clark, jeff beck, old stones....he rocked the farming hilltops when needed. n mi rocks
This is genius, that steel is badass. I was a cosmic cowboy before I knew what that was but Gram gave us cowboy hippies a connection.
Gram Parsons makes it cool to be vulnerable here and sing with emotion.
Those were the words I was searching for. Thanks man, this completely states what I feel listening and watching this.
almost as good as a young James Taylor
@@onefoot7 Interesting that James was #84 on Rolling Stones list of top 100 musicians, and Gram was #87! Obviously someone agrees with you.
One of the most beautiful songs I've ever heard. Only Gene Clark and Ryan Adams possessed and possess this depth of soul in this genre of music.
Good call David Murray. You named two of my favorite artists with Gene Clark and Ryan Adams. Ryan does a great cover of Gram’s “a song for you”
There is so much unknown, untapped music out there it just blows my mind... discovered another legend today.
Thank you for providing us with this wonderful performance of Gram. This is a treasure with there being hardly any video of Gram in existence.
Thank you Buck Owens for your influence! Bakersfield lives on!!
What a shame he had to leave this world so soon. One of the best voices ever. 🙏❤️👌
Beautiful, and magical! What a fine bunch of musicians!
Love Gram smile!
This album is a masterpiece.
He was gorgeous, and such a talent. Would that he could still be with us, playing his cosmic American music. 💜
There's something genuinely heartbreaking and real in the words and Gram's delivery. Always gets me.
The greatest and most moving singing voice in music history. God's Own Singer, indeed 🙌🌟
So many great bands don’t get the recognition they should.
When I first heard this tune I could not get over the emotion and feeling. That was 1972 I think. After all this time it still has the grit and sorrow in it. Just think of the music Gram would have written.
RIP Gram what a song right from the heart simply beautiful !
Grahm was WAY before his time as far as his music goes! ~ Rock in Peace Graham ~
This is probably my favorite song.
me too
Gram Parsons - "This World Was Never Meant For One As Beautiful As You."
I concur
Love you Gram, you were just so far ahead of your time. This world wasn't ready for your beautiful voice and a face to match😻🎤🎸
One of the greatest love songs ever written.
I felt his presence when I visited Joshua Tree in 2019. I understood why he loved it so much.
best country song ever,,,,,,,grams voice is incredible, such emotion sounds like hes singing through tears
Yes! Some of the best singing of all time sounds like the singer is singing through tears. Another example is Patsy Cline.
MAGICAL PERSON ! WE MISS YOU GRAM.....NICE STEEL GUITAR, TOO !
"I wouldn't lie. - you know I'm not that kind of guy..." What a love song.
The elvis lip Gram puts on is a nod from one great to another.
augie obrien Elviss guitarist played with Gram at the end.
and he does it well
I saw that lip and I thought wow sings great and has that Elvis lip.
Love Gram parsons
You got it. Gram met Elvis when he was ten.
I love his music. So sad we lost him so many years ago.
THE NUDIE SUIT....combined with those heartbreaking vocals. Wow.
Those clothes are embarrassing and an impediment to rural fans, AKA the country.
T S yr embarrassed, and projecting sounds like
Hell Yeah !
Nudie suits were works of art.
T S they were poking fun at the Nashville “establishment” at a time when the Nudie suit was the standard. Gram’s had pot leaves on his so he really flipping his nose at Nashville where he was not taken seriously. His using rock influences in his music had all the SoCal artists chasing after him. The Eagles, Ronstadt, Nitty-Gritty, Loggins and Messina, and anyone else you want to name, not to mention discovering Emmylou Harris and giving her exposure to the entire LA music scene.
this is real..give me Gram over the nu country garbage. and PLEASE induct him in the Country Music Hall of Fame
+Donna Frost He also should be in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as well.
+Brian Washington he kinda is in the rock hall of fame as a member of the byrds
RH421939 No. The hall only inducted the original line up. They didn't induct the "Sweetheart of the Rodeo" line up and Clarence White wasn't inducted as a Byrd either. In fact, Parsons was on the ballot a few years ago as a solo.
good point,, the rock and roll hall of fame is a joke anyway these days
+RH421939 once they let Madonna in its value diminished greatly
Dreamy as fuck.
Gram was the Godfather of alt country--what a genius. He couldn't save himself from himself, sadly.
The man who left the world with a whole ton of heartache. ❤️
A rock ballad. A country ballad.
Just a beautiful song.
God Dam it gram, you did it again I’m cryin!
I wish Gram had lived long enough to know how beloved and respected he is as a pioneering singer-songwriter. Sadly, at age 26 he graduated a year ahead of the 27 Club.
Three weeks to be exact.
