It wasn't just that Gabrielle at this time had a kind heart, it was that in earlier conversations Xena had voiced doubts of Phantes being Terreis's killer, and why she'd left Gabrielle at the village while she looked for answers. Overall, Melosa was a good Queen and leader, but her desire to seek vengeance for the death of her sister blinded her to the possibility of a setup; and essentially she'd paid the price with her queenship by the end of this episode.
