      It’s rare for me, so I can just power through when it comes up. It’s all about styrofoam. I can’t isolate the exact sound that trips me up, but some of the squeaks and squeals rubbing styrofoam can make just knots up my gut. The closest parallel feeling is a really disgusting, sickening smell; I get “grossed out”.

      I drown the stressing sounds with other sounds, podcasts, music etc. My triggers include analog clock sound so I am trying to convince my household to replace them. And I meditate to cope with the constant stress that my loud house generates.

      For me the worst trigger sounds are wet mouth noises like chewing. It makes me absolutely furious. Luckily it doesn't bother me when I do it myself, and actually mimicking the sound sometimes helps a little bit. I think it helps because it puts me more in control of the situation.

      Ah...medications, I should have probably mentioned that in my video. While there's no FDA approved drug for misophonia in the United States (since it's not a real diagnosis yet and there's no research on treatment), I could see medications like clonazepam being helpful for some people.

      I have thoughts about killing someone quite often when pushed enough, especially when they trigger my misophonia. I had the thought of smashing someone in the head with their laptop over and over again until they were unconscious. Or I either wish to smash my head into the wall until I pass out or do something extravagant. I usually listen to music to block out the sounds.

    “Get over it” “just ignore it” “oh shut up” that’s all what I hear when I try to explain it to people. They don’t know what it’s like. Those triggers ruin my life

      Reading all these people describing my experiences made me break down and cry. No one understands unless they have it. No one takes it seriously. Its a mental prison i cant escape.
      Im so used to being mocked and dismissed, I just repress my feelings as hard as i can to appear normal.

      Have you cured this thing? I started having misophonia because of my stupid neighbour. Everything triggers me. It s like above my place are hundreds of horses that run in the same time. Now the noises are not that bad, but everytime i go to bed i get anxiety and im paranoid that in that night i wont sleep. I dont know how to deal with it, its like im going nuts

      thank God I am not the only one, yesterday my cousin told me, just shut up, you r being a dramatic queen, get it over with. I was trembling and I just clammed up and went to the bathroom to cry. why does people not understand this? why?

    Anyone else want to scream or lash out at the person making trigger sounds, or just generally rage and smash stuff?
    I want to, but I don’t, I just bottle it up and go to my room where it’s quiet and just beat up my bed.

      I have also experienced that, but in the couple of times it got really bad my anger turned into panic as a result of not being able to let it out.

      I have the same problem. My brother would always chew loudly and I wanted to smack him across the face! My mom and dad never understanded my problem. So now I just sit in peace in my room, throwing pillows around. What is wrong with me? I also have a frontal lisp so everytime I pronounce an s, it makes a whistling sound. It bothers me a lot. Trust me, your better off than I am.

      I have bottled my anger for years, i cannot let it out, it is too overwhelming. I get enraged at the noises, very fidgety trying to stand them for a minute, i want to rip off my ears, hit my head etc. people treat it as a joke or something like that and legit use it against you, i do not like many students knowing of my condition. I constantly listen to music, nothing else i can do to be honest. no where else to escape the sounds...

      The exact stuff happens to me. It’s kind of comforting to know someone else has it and that you’re not alone because every time I tell someone about it they treat it as a joke. In fact, as I’m typing this people are doing it right now and I’m just trying to take my mind off of it but it’s very difficult. Doing something like typing lets selective attention kick in though so I’ll usually just go on notes and type something. In case you’re wondering it’s when people smack their lips is what gets me.

      This is something I hear from many individuals who experience misophonia - it's often the people they are closest to that produce the most distressing sounds.

      Yep I only suffer from people who are close to me or friends I'm around daily for a long time, people who I don't know can make the same sound and it doesn't in the slightest bother me.

    Anger is an understatement. It’s full on rage. What’s crazy is as soon as the threat is eliminated I’m perfectly fine. Just feel exhausted.

      It legitimately blinds me. Like I can’t see or think about anything but making the sound stop. And once it stops the rage is gone.

      Mix exposure with distraction. Im about to start therapy for severe reactions to simple sounds. Go for it and get it out of the way so we can get better

    The best thing I learned is I need to have headphones or earphones with me 100% of the time.

    "If everyone heard sounds as intensely as you did, they would also get upset." This is honestly the hardest thing to internalise about misophonia. It's so hard to accept not everyone hears things the same way as you or that it's not your problem for being so sensitive.

      Yess!!!! When I was sitting on the bus I would always just look down even with headphones on because I knew if I noticed someone chewing gum or eating I would be triggered the whole entire ride... it really shows that it's only in my head but I cannot control it once I start getting triggered.
      I really believe this doesn't haven't to do with just sounds, I have this REALLY big trigger when my sister is playing with her hair and twisting it, I've started a lot of physical fights with her cuz of this and it sucks :(

      Until just recently I had no idea what I was feeling, I didn't even know there was a name for what we feel regarding noise, etc... Then I read an article explained "a small group of people may suffer from misophonia, a condition in which they are sensitive to certain noise and it may trigger annoyance"

      My social anxiety + fear of uncomfortable noises makes me want to shut myself away but noises are apart of life so it's just hard trying to tolerate every bit that's supposed to be normal. It's like my mind is a ticking time bomb ready to explode at any second.

    This disorder is ruining my life... I write this now wiping tears from my eyes because I am so tired of living my life in pain and sadness and anxiousness. My family thinks I am crazy, I have to pretend I am somebody I am not in public so I can try and seem normal. I wear ear plugs 80% of the day. I'm always in my room..... When I come out of my room and I hear my dogs drinking water out of their water bowl it ticks off my misophonia so much I have to plug my ears with my fingers and my sister or mom asks me what I am doing and I lie and say my ears itch and I go back to my room and cry. I sleep a lot with ear plugs in to forget my pain. Sounds of dogs barking, people chewing, breathing, talking through walls, snoring, whistling, laughing, humming, clicking all seem to make me crazy. I don't want to live like this anymore. I want a cure for this. Life doesn't seem worth living.... I hate this. Please send hope. God bless everyone who deals with this disorder I love you and I know what you go through.

      I feel like this too. It's so hard to even be happy most of the time. I often feel like people are doing it on purpose expecially my fiance because I've told him so many times the things that trigger me yet he just does it anyway and will even look me right in the eyes to see my reaction or whatever idk. It's hard to want to live when I can't even be around my favorite people without being enraged by simple life noises

      @@savlynn6942 if your fiance triggers you on purpose, he has no remorse and no understanding of the severity you are affected by it. If you wanna get petty, give him some of his own medicine. Ask him what noise bothers him, and repeat it until he can't take it anymore. Then explain to him that's what your miso. Is like and when he does it on purpose it's torture.

    When I tell my friends chew I tell them to chew with their mouths closed. Then they chew loudly on purpose, but it’s not the same as natural chewing. When I here trigger noises I feel angry and I want to cry. I want to punch whoever is making the noise. It’s nice to look in the comments and see people I can relate to. People with misophonia are strong 💪

      Thats how i am with nose breathing.. If they start doing it on purpose to annoy me it doesnt bother me. Its when its natural that i get enraged.. Nobody understands.. I also hate the sounds of crickets and doves that make repetitive sounds.

      It actually makes me even more angry when people start doing it on purpose (especially after I have politely asked them not to), because it is really disrespectful. For me it takes a lot of courage to ask someone to stop making a sound. I feel really sad and disappointed when I realize that they simply don't take this condition seriously.

      I was sitting next to an asshole today who would take a long slurp of coffee, sigh as he swallowed and then smack his lips immediately after, in a continuous cycle. I had to get up and leave to not kill him.

      See thats how I feel, especially when faced with gum chewers. They're scum of the earth until they spit it out, then I like them again. And gum seems to be only getting more and more popular. We gotta get rid of this way of thinking ASAP or else its going to be a short life for all of us when we die of stress induced heart attacks.

      I get triggered when my little sister is laying or sitting down and moves her foot. I make her cover it up with a blanket

      Depends on the day really, if i am in an okay mood i just listen to music to block out the sound, but the vibrations in the table from people typing on their laptop or computer can make me agitated, the sound is my number 1 problem. Half the time the vibrations annoy me, depending on how i feel at the current time, and usually seeing it i do not care, but when i am angry, the mere sight of it makes me enraged.

      I got SOO MAD when people lift their feet up and down just by using the ankle. I dont know why, but i can not concentrate and it takes all my attention and i just have to leave.

    Finally, I have an excuse to why I just can't stand breathing noices. My sister does it all the time, soft breathing out of her mouth. Everyone doesn't even notice it, but I can not stand it, it makes me so angry and disgusted, I hate my sister because of it, and can't be anywhere near her in a quiet situation because I hear it.

      I have the same exact thing but with my stepdad and he grunts and breathes very loudly and it's drives me insane when I hear him talking with food in his mouth. It's gotten so bad the past year that I avoid him as much as possible and I get really pissed off if he tries talking to me and it sucks

    The thing that annoys me the most is when people tell me "you just have to get used to sounds, or just ignore them." I have ADHD, OCD and Misophonia and it just makes me want to break something when someone tells me that.

      I also have ADHD. and misophoniia so aweful and my husband is my worst trigger and he’s constantly clearing his throat or sniffing.
      This misophonia can make you want to be a hermit.

    When my father laughs in a particular way, or coughs, sneezes or yawns, it's very, very loud and it goes through my entire body and I literally want to smack him every time he does that. Or I just want to break anything that's in front of me! I'm the least violent person I know and I love my father so much! I hate this. He also does this thing since he has a new front tooth where he rubs his tongue over it very quickly so his jaw moves all the time, making him look crazy, and it makes me want to punch him too. I'm desperate. I just keep it to myself, or I just walk away. I want it to stop because he does nothing wrong! He's the sweetest person and just me wanting to literally attack him isn't healthy.

    It's so hard to have it at school because not many have it and they don't understand , also most people have never heard. But it feels good to have other people who understand.

      If it gets in the way of tests and exams, see if you get can get a letter of accommodation from a therapist or physician to take them in a separate room. It won't solve your problems but it could make a little bit of difference when it comes to academics.

      Same school is torture of course classes when we are allowed to eat. One kid in my class was slurping really loud and I wanted to scream or hit him. I just ended up going to the bathroom to have an episode.

      Totally this girl in my class was banging a hammer that was for the jeweler class on the table. I wanted to tell her to stop but I didn't because I'm not the type of person to speak out like that, but she says "am I annoying" and I couldn't help but say "yes, yes you are" and that's way out of line for something I'd ever say.

    Mimic the sounds as best you can. If it’s okay for others to make noise, then it’s okay for you to make noise, too. Mimicking can also mask the noise and give you a level of control. Be strong. Big love. ❤️

      Loud sounds are personally what I use to distract myself. I have a playlist of death metal and rock and stuff specifically for when I'm triggered.

    I have experienced misophonia my entire life, this video made me want to cry because I’ve always felt like it was just something that’s my fault and there is something wrong with me, or I just have anger issues or something. But to feel validated with what I’ve been feeling since the dawn of my existence is very reassuring and comforting. Thank you!

Or sometimes I don’t even tell the person anything and just massage my ears to try to self soothe and like my mom or my boyfriend get SOO angry and yell at me and belittle me if I just silently massage my ears

    It started for me in the fourth grade. My teacher smacked her lips constantly, every time she spoke. I started counting how many times, I started plugging my ears and bracing for impact. Eventually, it was evident I had a problem, since I couldn’t handle eating with my family any more. And I had peers who would make my trigger noises to mock me, because I didn’t know how to keep to myself about it. Nobody understands. It makes me feel very alone. 23 years old now and still very little understanding.

    I've completely broken down in front of my friends before because of this. After explaining it they may show sympathy, but they eventually go back to doing it even after making a big scene. Only a couple people in my life actually care about it; my friend chessadie, and my friend Miranda. They are the only ones who have lisend, and tryed to be more aware of what they are doing around me. Misophonia provokes anger, depression, suicidal thoughts, and violence twords that person for me personally. For me the triggering sounds are caused by oral sounds such as eating, chewing, kissing, mouth pops ext. People often make fun of me for it. One time my not so good friends held me down and chewed in my ears really loudly. I cried and they didn't stop. To this day they mock me with exadurated chewing noises. I've lived with this my whole life. My family says that I need to get over it and that I can deal with it, but in reality every time I hear it it makes me want to provoke violence twords that person. I've even gotten to the point of thretining them to stop. I hope that this helps people understand that it's a serious thing, and if you are experiencing misophonia that you are not alone.

      I literally want to kill someone with their mug if they try to slurp next to me. It's really scary how easy I murder ppl in my head bc of the sounds they make. It's even more distressing when I start to blame myself for overreacting but like u said people don't take this seriously. if I ask someone to keep it down I usually get an eye roll or a chew right in my ear :c you're not alone, fam. we can suffer together

      I am so so so sorry your friend did that to you. I suffer from SPD, or Sensory Processing Disorder, which is with autism. However, I think I have misophonia too, as I've had it more than likely my entire life. I've learned it will pass...eventually. It's like an anxiety attack, which I also have (general anxiety). Disney is my coping mechanism. Also, here are my triggers:
      Water
      Wind Chimes
      Swings
      Movement in general, which is also linked with misophonia.

    For me I get anxitety before a sound is about to happen and I get panic attacks when I hear them. I even feel I can still hear it after I hear the sound and its quiet. It's hard to cope with but this video has helped.

      thank u so much u just helped me understand my 8 yr old son, everytime I fixed food and sat down I hear him saying stop eating and I tell him I haven't even started yet. And during eating he gets so upset. I also hate when he breaths in my ear.

      Does he have any other issues like this? Sensory Processing Disorder and or Misophonia could be the case. But it's so hard to get SPD diagnosed now as they no longer recognize it. 😒

    For me whispering is the worse, keyboard tapping, women filing their nails, chewing, swallowing, drinking, blowing bubbles with gum.. I fill with rage. It's hard to explain the feeling, my body hurts inside, I can't go to the cinema, I want to kill people. I want to pick my chair up and throw it at them, but when my kids eat it doesn't trigger it. I cover my ears, my legs start shaking, my insides shake. It's unbearable. Nobody that has never felt it can't no what it's like. It physically destroys you inside, your body is full of rage and you need to escape from the hell! Sounds stupid, I know

      Your kids can make triggering sounds, but they don't trigger you? That is VERY interesting. That is the kind of information that anyone who may research mesophonia will need to know. I have miso and as you know, it's hell, but I've had shrinks tell me it's a hearing problem, clueless! Animal sounds NEVER bother me, only human noise. It has NOTHING to do with volume, either. I've been on many meds, only one made any difference- lamictal. I hope it can work for others. Good luck with your coping and healing.

      I'm pretty sure its bcuz our brains are different i know it sounds weird but each time u hear a trigger sound it activates a place in ur brain and that place (forgot the name of it) should only get activated when ur in danger like a lion roaring but bcuz of our brains bein different the place gets activated when ur mom starts chewing and right when it gets activated u start feeling fear and panic attacks just like if a lion was about to attack u and the reason why it only activates when its sum1 u love (btw this part is something I think) might be bcuz ur brain thinks ur mom is threatening u and u will get hurt and angry BUT a good thing tho is bcuz of our brian bein different would also mean we hav a higher chance of intelligents and creativeness

    My nephew has this. He is distressed because I doesn't understand and thinks something is wrong with him. He is very depressed and recently is having suicidal thoughts.       No guys, it is not that common, if those people have said that is because they don't know much about this topic. It is okay to be annoyed by some sounds, it really happens to everyone, but not in the way Misophonia does! If someone is annoyed by a sound they might want to make it stop or ignore it, or get a little frustrated, while Misophonia can make you cry, hurt yourself or hurt other ecc! Misophonia is not a normal condition, and we have to treat it as it is!
      So I would recommend you to not listen to that people, but it is just a suggestion. You need to accept Misophonia and to deeply take care of yourself. I utilize journal , meditation, slow breathing and activities that distracts me from stress. You could try them out!

    It’s hell. Pure torture. As far as I can remember it I was 8 years old.The only solution is to avoid it.. learned this the hard way. At first I thought I just had to get used to it or that I’m crazy. but nope I’ve learned on my own that I just have to avoid it and doing that can be hard as well bec ofc I cant avoid every single damn situation. This is an everyday struggle. I don’t want to associate with anyone.

      M I got it when I was 8 too. I remember one time I was at a restaurant with my family and they kept kicking their lips and smacking their lips and sniffling (they were eating spicy food) and I just kept kicking the table and I remember I got yelled at and grounded for it and I get misunderstood everyday because of it and they mock me for it.       I was 6, and started crying because the radio DJ's voice was "sticky". We were in the car, I couldn't get them to make it stop. Now that I'm old, it means a lot just to find friends who won't trigger it on purpose. It doesn't make sense to people.

      Mine started around 4th grade. I can’t pay attention in school and always find myself uncontrollably crying and having a fit and everyone just thinks I’m a crybaby. My family also doesn’t believe me and they do it on purpose, laugh, and make jokes about it. Also when I tell anyone at school which I like never do, they do it in face and laugh when I start to panic. The feeling I get when it happens is immediate rage and disgust. Sometimes I feel like I can’t even breathe. It really is horrible with this thing hovering around you all the time.

      I dont remember when it developed for me but I noticed it when I was around 8 or 9. I wasn't able to talk to anyone about until I turned 15. I only learned about Misophonia when I turned 15 and now im trying to find solutions that will help me get through school.

My hearing has always been so loud my whole life despite allergy and respiratory issues. My sister and I can hear a mouse in a wall. Drives us insane.

    Dogs barking, babies crying, doors slamming. I've noticed that it is sounds that I deem "unnecessary" sounds. I also notice I get more enraged because they are things out of my control. So could this possibly be a control issue? Sensitive ear issue?
    I've always been labeled a bitch, but I just see red when I hear these types of things. I try my best to remove myself from situations, but you can't always. Sometimes these sounds trigger migraines.

      The anger response you describe is common to misophonia, particularly not being able to control your environment. Many with misophonia worry that others are making triggering sounds on purpose.

      I have very sensitive hearing, I can even feel when the pressure changes in the room, when someone is pulling up on my driveway when I’m in the kitchen. I always tell my husband when our guests arrive before they even knock the door. loud sounds drive me insane. Im constantly telling people “stop making that sound” or “put the volume down” i don’t know why I hear too much

      I relate to it being unnecessary or "inconsiderate" sounds: slamming doors, heavy stomping, dragging feet, shriek laughter, listening to music in public without headphones, and, of course, mouth-smacking noises and repetitive sighing.

    I remember once I was taking a test in school and this person right in front of me was breathing so loudly that I couldn't concentrate at all. My anger and anxiety skyrocketed. I started feeling crazy because it seemed like no one else was bothered. I desperately wanted to change my seat , but I had to get permission and I couldn't think of a more believable excuse. It was an awful expirience. And of course I've had plenty of those. Eating with my family has been an ultimate torture for as long as I can remember myself and, unfortunately, they don't realize how much it triggers me. I truly hope that misophonia is going to be much more acknowledged in the future as it extremely affects one's mental health and everyday life.

    Misophonia affects my every day life. If I hear a TV or music bleeding into a room I’m in, I literally start to go crazy. I can’t stand when people chew with their mouth open (but that one doesn’t really mean you have misophonia). The problem is I get very angry when these sounds occur.
    I currently live with my parents and we just bought a new house. I didn’t realize until we moved in that it is only 750ft from an interstate highway with some houses and trees separating us in between. It is so annoying to listen to every minute I’m home and I constantly feel like I’m in distress. Not really sure what to do. It affects my work ethic and I get much less accomplished because of this. I’m wearing noise cancelling headphones nearly every minute that I’m home... absolutely miserable.
    I appreciate this video and really hope that someday there is more research done to help people with this problem.

      Unfortunately they are not effective against sudden noises and not effective at all against high pitched dog barking... :(

    Me and my mom both have Misophonia...I just found out today after struggling with it for 4 years. I found out by searching and searching for answers, then I finally found the answer to me and my moms struggle; I would always eat in a different room than my family, but at my dads house I have to eat with him so its really hard and he would notice me getting angry at it and we would have fights everyday about things that would bother me. I really tried to focus in class but there would be sniffing, pen tapping, and chewing gum..And at lunch Chewing with mouth open, eating chips, and slurping a drink would even bother me. I thought I was alone and I thought nobody was by my side until now. There are people out there who actually have the same thing as me and I finally have weights off my back. I wish there was a cure but unfortunately there isn't because its so new to studies...Thank you for this 🙏☺😅

      So I also hate the sound of people talking in a movie theater, which is why I almost exclusively go to the Alamo Drafthouse Cinema where there's a strict zero talking policy. Problem with that is because it is so much quieter, I can hear both breathing and eating SO MUCH MORE CLEARLY!

    Ever since being a child. I wear earplugs almost all day. I can’t stand gum chewing, snapping, my vehicle making little rattling noises, the sound of people sneezing, clearing their throat, so many things. Unfortunately I cope with it with alcohol. It affects my work. It’s also affected my relationship. Went to doctors, counselors. All they want to do is give me pills and they do nothing.

    Someone in my class has really bad allergies, they're snorting and sniffling like a pig all the time. My dad always snores anf he falls asleep instantly and at night our heads are against the same wall, I'm pretty much always playing music as loud as i can without annoying people to block out noises. People smacking their gums when they eat, loud chewing, snoring, sniffling, coughing (consistently), scraping (my mum has a habit if scraping her fork against a metal plate when eating). All of these noises and more can cause a violent reaction or i can just snap if I'm exposed to these sounds for too long. I've always laughed when I'm in pain, so say if someone bent my ginger back I'd laugh to cope with the pain, sometimes this happens if i get triggered in public like in class, it's better than getting violent. At home I'll punch pillows if i need to

      Oh, I understand you so much! At work we are in the "open concept" environment and every overexaggerated cough, every repeated sneeze, attempts to hold back sneezes, clearing throats, gum chewing, sniffles, cumulatively give me so much rage I often don't know what to do besides stew and be even more angry. It SUCKS!

    What bothers me the most is my dad's breathing, and it's awful, I can't be around him and do things with him without having some fear of or an actual incidence of anxiety and anger.     People chewing loudly always irritated me and after a long time span I realised some people could move on with that sound, when I was still in the same position. Well now I know my problem is called misophonia. Thanks a lot for sharing this video.

    when i hear whistling, my heart starts beating fast. if it doesn’t stop in five seconds, tears start coming to my eyes. after i start crying, i feel the need to break something. this is terrible. it’s been happening since i was about nine.

    What I feel is more as if I was being... threatened, maybe? So sometimes I get angry at someone or something and sometimes It makes me want to fly from that noise or even cry. This happens to me more often when I am in a social event with other people and there is some noise "hurting" me and I want to pretend everything is fine. So how can I treat something that makes me feel threatened? A treatment like those for fight or flight response? Not exactly I think, since when earing the triggers I feel like it is actually hurting. But what do I know? I just have misophonia. We need real research (and we need people to stop looking at us as if we were just whining).

      It sounds like you are feeling a fear/anxiety response. Some of the strategies mentioned here could be helpful. In some situations exposure therapy could help and in others it might be more about limiting the impact of the sounds or distancing yourself from them. I agree - this is a problem that needs to be taken seriously and be researched thoroughly. Thanks for watching and good luck!

      Yes. It’s getting worse for me these past years. I’m looking into CBD maybe nicotine I know it’s addicting but maybe I can do a small portion or something or maybe just anxiety meds. I’m starting to worry about my future if I’m being honest. Misophonia is REAL I wouldn’t wish it upon anyone or my enemies

    From a college psychologist who is encountering students with misophonia I want to express how helpful your video is. Clear, helpful and in keeping with ongoing research with sound hypersensitivity. You mentioned a "biological" root (which makes sense) and I cautious about the mental health community pathologizing this problem (although emotional reactivity seems common and can have longer term negative impacts)

    I have scars on my palms from digging my nails into my skin from being in a triggering situation that I could not get out of. Same with my lips, I bite my lips. And if someone is doing it I can only focus on them and I lashing and throw stuff and whatever. And it bothers me sooo much when my friends are like “oh Yeha I hate when people chew with their mouth open I have mesophina too”

    I react this way to my upstairs neighbour's stomping towards my ceiling!! It drives me insane, and I litteraly want her to get into an accident so she won't be able to walk again. Period! Also I feel anxious to go home after work if she's home because of the stomping sounds, cause I know that since we're in a conflict about this, she stomps her feet hard to the ground ON PURPOSE...! She just makes an excuse and sais she's allowed to do whatever she wants in her own home, and "Too bad for you that you chose to stay downstairs!" -As if misophonia was something that I deliberately chose to develope over the past four years I've been living here -and she's been living her for like four MONTHS! She complains if I play music to calm myself down, so I don't know how I'm supposed to heal from this. I've concidered moving, but house prices are too high to buy something else, and I've renovated and made this my dream home so i WANT to live here... (If I'm alone in the building that is...)

    I've had MISOPHONIA since I was 5 years old, or since my first memories. I have missed out on SO much. I just leave the situation, no matter what that means. At times that is as simple as walking out of a room, but other situations it means much more. Life is really unpleasant. If I left the house without my earplugs, I don't think I'd survive!!

    Went to dinner with a friend, he was chewing so loud and sometimes with his mouth open i almost strangled him.
    What I hate the most is people cleaning their throats, coughing, yawning, children are the worst, dogs too.

    My misophonia happens at work often, and coping techniques aren't something I can do and work at the same time. I work in healthcare, so earbuds, music, and removing myself temporarily just aren't options. I'm studying for a new job. Until then, I suffer and seek isolation desperately

    I HATE paper flicking/corner folding/rubbing the most, mouth sounds, breathing, snoring, scraping, and when people pronounce things wrong. These all make me extremely angry and I physically shake. I cry when I ask people to stop and they don't.

      Some people like earplugs plus noise canceling headphones on top of that for very difficult situations, like being on an airplane and being stuck next to someone who is creating distressing sounds.

      I tried the silicone ear plugs, but there's a risk of ear infection. I'd like to create a way to push the "ear flaps" in with a soft device inside the headphones.

    I just know I have this.... I’ve been suffering ever since I was like 4. And when you’re so young you can’t make up things like that. But realizing that I’m not the only one and that misophonia is an actual thing has helped me a lot. I’m not as triggered as I used to be.

    - i have misophonia since i'm 4
    - i have a pretty good hearing
    - i have a musical ear
    - People of my own circle don't consider the struggle or that it could possibly exist
    - I'm studying neuropsychology to make researches by myself
    - If anyone wants a tip to not get less mad to people and forget about the idea of choking them in the moment, (if you can't listen to music) do your own stressful sound. At the beginning, you'll get mad to yourself but you'll see the more you'll do it the more it'll become one of the best options when you are stuck in a situation and you can't do nothing else

    Upset is an understatement... it is an intense physiological and emotional trigger. I'm literally experiencing it this moment as my mom is visiting and won't stop singing along to her favourite singer, whose voice has ALWAYS been difficult for me. Torture is a much more accurate term. I'm sobbing in my room...

    It’s so nice to see such accessible information about misophonia. And with such support for students sitting tests, this is amazing. From experience, anyone I’ve met that has misophonia also has an eating disorder, and my psychiatrist thinks they are linked. I was put on Latuda (an antipsychotic) and it controlled my misophonia so well!!! I was still agitated, but no feelings of violent rage!!!! Sending all my love and support to those with misophonia. X

      @@seanqc8007 I've suffered Tinnitus due to it. There are benefits like higher quality sleeping, but after some time I had to give my ears a break. I wore earplugs to sleep and headphones in the daytime. Taking anything out was like whiplash. They can also cause a buildup of ear wax. You don't have to stop suddenly, because again, earplugs to sleep is useful, just talk to your ear doctor about it. What I've done is got a big fan that practically blocks outside noise from my room, and I occasionally wear earplugs. They probably won't damage your ears right away, but this is just for precaution. If you really can't stand it, wear them as much as you like, just make sure to clean thoroughly and don't wear them for extremely long periods of time. Wax earplugs are pretty good since they're moldable. Silicone are hard and can sometimes not block as much noise and Foam are porous and a good environment for bacteria so they will need more cleaning. You can also talk to your ear doctor and get CUSTOM earbuds! More expensive but worthwhile investment in your health.. I'd just say adjust as much as you can without earplugs before going for them immediately.

    I use the strongest noise canceling headphones on the market, and I still ended up hospitalized from stress. The violent thoughts are torturous.

      There’s a good chance you’ve already tried this but have you checked out 3m? The specific headphone is called PELATOR X (lol I know) they are made for construction workers. The only sound you can hear is loud talking or yelling. They stick out like 3 inches from each ear and look bizarre. I use them for emergency situations and I’m so grateful to have found them.

    I have a rather severe case of misophonia... I can barely leave my room for five seconds without a noise bothering me. Usually it is only with a couple family members, but if I'm tired, it can be basically anybody making the smallest noise.

      This must be very limiting for you. Do a wide variety of sounds trigger you or is it limited to just a few specific people or a few types of sounds? If it is more broad, it might be a condition like tinnitus: www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/tinnitus/symptoms-causes/syc-20350156.

      The Psych Show There is a large variety of sounds that trigger me, but there are not many people who trigger me. There are a couple people in my family and one or two people at my church. Other than that, I am usually okay for the most part. But the people who do make the noises that trigger me, make a LOT of noises that trigger me. Could this still be something other than Misophonia?

    i'm ok with noise in general, except for when i'm in my studio appartement and listen to the noise my neighbours make. It makes me angry and anxious, it's like my neighbour is provoking me on purpose. Does this sound like misophonia to you ?
