Some are wondering why a Pontiac 326?!? This motor will go back into the original car with matching numbers. The car is a 1965 Tempest Custom Convertible that is red with a white top. I have had it since 1989, and my parents actually drove it out of the glass doors of the dealership when new. It is a survivor car with original paint and I have cleaned up almost everything else on the car to keep it solid and running for many years to come. I am so thankful for the extremely detailed work from Daniel (he is the best!!) and very excited to be able to get it out for some cruising without the smoke following. The great improvements will also provide just enough juice to add some extra fun...and run cool, which it has never done!
Love seeing some of these old forgotten engines being bought back to life. Plus being rebuilt in a more precise way than the factories put out. Man, I just like old stuff. Maybe cause I'm a 50 year dude brought up on old vehicles. Cool vid!
Love your intro, it’s all about the info and not about ego and cheap flash (look at me, look at me!) You really do it right. Wish other channels would learn from you.
Love those torque building Pontiacs.. My pops had a 65' Bonneville with a 421, factory dual exhaust and those 8 lug wheels. What a beast Thanks again brother
Outstanding! It seems that there aren’t many engine builders willing to move the muscle car era engines to the modern thin ring packs. I understand that it’s likely you’ll need to order custom pistons, but all the benefits you gain are significant.
u know damn well the factory never took the time to get all the caps even as u did...!..great job Daniel...!..always a pleasure watch'n u work...!..should be a cool build...thanks 4 share'n...
I've never realised that the block could bend and distort like that 😮 people can see why it's so much to get machine work, just the amount of checking and sizing, great job ,thanks for sharing, all the best to you and your loved ones
I am surprised you didn't change the dowel pins. I almost always do on these. If you can keep the stock pin diameter you can find a hardened pin that is longer, but the same diameter, in the Durabond catalog. Being longer helps locate the caps better. Sometimes you need a bigger pin, which means reaming the block and caps. I have taken a skim cut off the bottom after removing pins to help square everything up. This is more prevalent on the big main blocks, though. Pontiacs are fun.
I really like old Mopar's, but I have always questioned GM's decision to ax Pontiac because I thought they were the best of the GM lineup. Great video and I will be following along for sure.
@@DanielSmith-yp7mw More like getting rid of Pontiac had the least impact on the unionized labore force, even though Pontiac was outselling Buick and Cadillac combined.
The only thing I will use is DJI Osmo Action. I bought 1 GoPro because oh this oh that. Oh junk was my opinion. I have had the Action 1, Action 3, and I now have the DJI Osmo Action 5 Pro that was just released and I've run all them in dead of summer long periods outside and they've done fine and always had the best pic in my book. Just like the DJI drones are awesome. My favorite Gimble is the Hohem iSteady M6. Great video!
I was looking at that, you would have to pull the dowels but thats not a huge issue. Once you get it in the machine you could probably knock 3 or 5 thou off is and get everything squared really nice.
Very nice to see you building a Pontiac.I use Total Seal 1/16 1/16 3/16 with a Stainless top ring. This is in a 440 real deal poncho street car with twin turbo with Holley injection. Its got a Hyd roller cam with solid rollers tight lashed with a Ls firing order.Ive got enough compressor for 1600 HP…
That's the reason I havnt bought a Gopro. I've heard alot of.problems with overheating and dumping footage. That block took alot of work to get that line hone strait. Wow!!!!
Question. You said the thin casting allowed the mains to move around over time. Wouldn’t the cam tunnel be as mush out of line as well? Thx. Enjoy your vids. Learning a lot.
I have a question. Have you ever used the profilometer to measure the surface of the cam lobes and journals and I wonder if a different surface finish would perform better or worse?
Side question, on any of your builds, do you run/break them in before it goes back to the customers? And/or, after that’s done, do you our customers run them on a dyno for a base line of hp/tq? I’m a nut for that stuff. Thanks for your channel and info.
Sorry if I missed it, have the build specs been decided other than pistons and headwork, any consideration for a stroked crank like an offset grind to 3.79 or even aftermarket 4"? A 326 was rarely built when these were new, now- well this might be one of the only at the end. That's really cool.
@powellmachineinc what a shame to miss the cubic inch opportunity since you have to do crank work and balance anyways. Butler, Eagle and RRE have stroker options. Stock on the outside, big on the inside ! Just like the FAST class
Maybe it's the camera, but it looks like the block is moving ever so slightly in the machine. Maybe this doesn't matter as long as it's motion is mostly lateral. In my head though, if its seesawing in the slightest, how much more of the fore and aft bearings will get a touch before the center. I'm sure it comes out fine. It would be interesting to put a vertical and lateral dial on the block to see if or how much it moves. I know nothing about the machine other than what it does. It's fun to watch and learn.
Off topic LS question, I need to install a new set of wrist pin bushings in a set of LS Gen4 Rods. Pins won’t slide in the new bushings and I haven’t even put them in the rods yet. Is that normal? Do they need honed to size after install or something? Any of your videos show this process on these particular rods?
327 block with a 283 crank makes a poor man’s 302. (Z28 fame) A rev monster, but at the expense of torque. That’s where gearing comes in. Don’t mix and match the two strategies… rpm needs dividing in order to multiply the torque. High stall torque convertors work wonders behind a 302. 😶 I always preferred the 327 block over the 4 bolt mains, because the extra set of bolt-HOLES weakens the cradle. Don’t reverse the wrist pin offset and it’ll be fine. Of course it’s old school by today‘s theenkin’, but it still works. In the early 70’s, we used to run low 10’s naturally asperated in street trim. We used to drive to the track, change to slicks, kicked ass and drove home. These were our everyday drivers too. Jussed sayin’ 😶
GoPro cameras used to be great. Now they overheat and die almost instantly. A DJI Osmo action 5 is supposed to be a better camera than a GoPro, with a better sensor. The battery is also pretty great. I have no experience with either.
Never been a Pontiac fan. Love the 67 to 71 Firebirds, just not the motors they put in them. So much easier to build a big block Mopar or FE ford motor that will make more power than a 326 ever will.
The sneaky thing about Pontiacs is the blocks are all the same size. Unless someone who really knows looks they will never know the "326" in your ride is actually a 455. If you can find one.
Buddy of mine had a Firebird with a 326, don't remember the year, late 60's or a 70? beautiful car, all original paint, interior, drivetrain, sad that he totaled it about a year after he bought it. I have 30 years machinist/tool makers exp and about 10 automotive, worked for a shop owner didn't have line bore like yours, he had a line boring contraption that was a nightmare to set up because it had multiple components and was bolted to oil pan rails, had to true up 1 and 5 with boring bar between 3 pillow bearing like bar holders, massive headache, you may already be familiar with this method. It still changed the centerline of the crank a couple/few thou.
I am a Pontiac guy my whole life. I am trying to figure why anyone would build a 326 besides # matching or something. love my Pontiacs but 326 is a boat anchor. no offense love your videos and knowledge . TRUMP USA 🇺🇸 MAGA
