Thank for showing your attention to detail. Regardless of the task at hand. Moving equipment, cleaning, epoxy the floors and paint the walls, is a lot of work. Electrical may have to moved or longer wires used as well. Did this at a dealer & one side at a time, worked, but they ground the floor to get a tooth and chemically cleaned it. Then, the gray turned yellow hue where the sun hit it. Environmentally new to them and not the older stuff that actually worked. Best of luck!
Between running your shop with the amount of volume you do as such a small operation and taking any extra time you have to make this educational content, we all have to assume you must be burning the candle at both ends. I just threw a cam order in your mix too. You're putting in some crazy work man, and we really appreciate it. I hope this channel can big enough to really start adding to your income. This is good stuff for any gearhead.
Glad to see y'all's back up and running Daniel. I always enjoy the old school stuff being brought back to life. 😊 Ford Chevy Dodge 😊 Happy Birthday to the young one
Always nice to see an old 289 get some needed love; for what they are, these ran pretty good back in he late 70's-early 80's with a good cam, intake, and headers. Really nice aftermarket stuff available nowadays to make these sing. Thanks for your time!
Have a great party ,Happy Birthday to your lad, enjoy the time you get with them, time flys 😂 thanks for sharing, all the best to you and your loved ones
40’s not a problem, but saving that extra 10 could be one more rebuild down the road to keep her up and running. Love the content showing the real working of how engines go through the rebuilding process.
Just watching your hone stroke itself so to speak,LOL, makes me wonder how many times I had to manually stroke it, I'm on a roll ,LOL, when I was doing automotive machine work, 10 yrs of everything from single cylinders, HD to SB & BB engines, lotsa strokes.
Cool deal!!! I hope your able to epoxy your floors. I used to do home garages when I was doing home improvements for 7 years. Takes for ever to cure is the only problem I hated. Looks so friggin clean those. We would get muriatic acid and treat the oil stained spots before we played the epoxy. But any metal in the vicinity of the smoke from the acid is a goner!!! Lol.
Did it 50 years with a manual sunnen hone. 1/2 driver drill. Never left .005 in a bore. I left .0015 to hone. I used VanNorman 777. Great machine. Bored smooth as silk. Believe it or not VanNorman claimed "no need for honing". I never tried that! Yikes! Never had a problem manual honing. Plateau honed after. Perfect bores. It used catspaws to steady the bar while boring. Great machine. Still have it.
The cat's paws were not to support while boring, they were for centering only, (I have 3 vn bars) also hand honing is OK and it can work, but you will never have consistent crosshatch angles or rvk/rpk #'s, it's just not possible.
@@powellmachineinc Yes, we were consistent as possible. But Van Norman instruction manual says to bring the paws out while boring, blowing chips out while decending. You had develope a feel with the expander. One, two clicks at a time and it would advance itself. Once it stopped advancing you left it. Keep in mind, blowing chips out of the paws way every few seconds. It also dampened vibration. I did what the instructions said. Never had a problem. But I did dread honing!🥵 Especially on a hot day! I also had a depth stop on the hone. Worked great. I'm 75 and retired and had a shoulder replacement beginning of the year. I wonder why? Love your show.
Daniel, have you ever used the profilometer to measure the cam lobes and journals on a cam to see what they are and if a particular surface would work better to reduce friction, improve oiling and performance or longevity of the cam? If the surface in the bore is so important, the surface on the cam and crank would also be important.
Guessin’ y’all bouncing back from the storm, pretty good… I’m exploring / planning, a Harley Davidson V-Rod build. I’m taking a different approach then most, as I feel H-D left a ton on the table, with the induction / cylinder heads. Presently, getting into welding and sleeving the intake side of things, and filling in wasted space and blind corners in the chambers. To make it work, I’m going to be looking for cams. Guessing cores ain’t out there off the shelf, but, I may be able to do them myself, to supply to you, after some consultation with y’all. This ain’t a “need it tomorrow”, but don’t want to take a turn down a dead end road, for not being able to get cams. Should I call to discuss this?
I deck the blocks before honing with Deck Plate and it seems to not distort the cylinders as much. What's your opinion? I use an older Rottlier bar with a manual overhead hone. Similar to the sunnen ck10 but, you know 😂
We meet many years ago over a 302. I caught so much crap over us boring that engine.060 but it’s been about 10 years and that little engine is still thumping
@@powellmachineinc yes sir. I kept hearing. “It’s gonna run hot now” but we drove that car on power tour 1200 miles in 100 degree heat and the car never went over 190.
How old is that torque plate? I bought the exact same one from ICT Billet a few years ago but it arrived machined for the larger BBF locating dowels. I called them to inquire about the problem. They did some research and confirmed my issue. They even pulled some stock off the shelf in their warehouse to confirm they were all machined too large to the big block size. They did me a solid and cranked out a new torque plate machined with the correct SBF dowel holes. I'm overseas in England and I believe I have the only SBF and FE Ford torque plate in the country. I take them to the machine shop for them to use when I build my engines. I don't know how people get by building engines without them over here.
I was involved in moving machine shop equipment from where I worked to three different locations, two owners, then to my residence. Not a fun job, a heavy job.
You better get some extra bolts to hold your doors on before you go throw up! Winter is coming and that's a bad time to be driving around with your doors blown off!

Be good to see how you set the stroke speed, the pressure, what stones you use, and why you use the cheapo bore gage when the sunnen is hanging there.
