Like every single biographical movie takes creative license for dramatic effect. Joe didn't have to be a dick about it. It made it worse because the media took his quote out of context, to remove all things complimentary and still do to this day, to make it sound even more dickish than it was. But Rudy getting where he got from where he was and Joe getting where he got from where he was are both incredible stories even without the dramatic license. Joe was such a snob about it though. Like somehow Rudy tarnished his legacy or something and he still wasn't over it, because there wasn't a Joe Montana in the movie.
Hollywood dresses things up their way, to make movies more "entertaining", according to their ways of doing things. An accurate portrayal of the subjects would be better. I always wondered why "Rudy" was called "Rudy". There were many kids in the family, they all had the same last name, and they still call him "Rudy", and he was the only 1 who was called that name LOL? Well, it made for a good story, but I always knew it was not very accurate. I believe Montana's take on it, he was there, we were not!
Yeah, but Montana has also made a point of “setting the record straight” in other interviews as well. Why? Good grief, just let it go. There’s clearly something that gets under Montana’s skin whenever Rudy’s name comes up. It’s just weird.
Oh and one other minor detail...Rudy was the oldest of all his siblings, something the screen splash at the end hints at when it mentions all his younger siblings going to college. That means he was not a kind of picked on, beat down kid brother by his elders. There were no elders.
I heard Joe claim on another show that the real Rudy's dad was NOT actually Ned Beatty. Boom! There is a director's cut of this movie finally being released this fall. Go Rudy!
This is why I love Joe Montana. Give this interview with his former center Jesse Sapolu a listen and the story he tells at 21:20 tells it all. Which we related with because most of us were no talents definitely from no where. Joe cool hasn't done jack with his platform except be bourge af. The words came out your mouth Joe tell us how you really feel
The biggest "Hollywood Treatment" in the movie Rudy was not what was embellished but what was left out. OK, Great movie, insprational story about persevering and continuing to follow your dream against insurmountable odds. But, movie added things that just weren't true. As a 1977 Notre Dame grad, I was not only at the 1975 game but on campus 4 years living the Notre Dame experience. OK.... What was left out was that although he was undersized and lacking major college talent, Rudy was a 27 year old man in that 1975 game. He was born in 1948 and joined the Navy and worked in a powerplant years before Holy Cross JC then Notre Dame. The movie would lose some of its message if Rudy was shown as a mature man instead of naive kid as effectively portrayed by Sean Astin. Hollywood juggling the facts and outright eliminating a crucial one.
It’s sad how much these guys feel the need to cling to a happier version of reality, even if it’s not true. And Montana didn’t say it was a joke, so their characterization was wrong too. Sorry to break it to you, but life isn’t a fairy tale. It’s more nuanced than that... and it STILL is exciting and inspiring. I don’t even like Joe Montana. It’s just annoying to see men who have an influential platform behaving like boys, living in fantasy.
Joe probably thinks like everyone that went to ND In that era…. It was an embarrassment to their alma mater, lots of great came out of ND and the world talks about Rudy 😂
That's a little extreme. Haha. Rudy didn't get handed his small bit of playing time and recognition with his team. He worked very, very hard for it. Even Joe Montana said so. That doesn't sound like a participation trophy if you ask me.
Bruh.. Joe.. you're a football icon. Let the dude have his moment. He literally had one moment to shine and you shit on it? For what reason? I get he's just answering the question but c'mon dude sounded a bit petty downplaying it.
Actually Joe Montana is talking out of his a$$ about the jersey scene. It was only, according to the players who were actually there a couple of guys who offered their jerseys to coach Devine so he'd allow Rudy in that game. So maybe over embellished, but it did happen. Just be quiet Joe if you don't know what you're talking about
He’s full of crap! I saw an interview with the DT that played next Rudy on that final play. He said the Jersey turn in did happen, but not by the whole team. It was a CB
He’s just telling the true story which seems to hurt peoples feelings. The vast majority of “true story” movies are almost total fiction. It’s a great movie though, which is what matters. Like they say…don’t let the truth spoil a good story
Nah, he’s just telling the truth. Hollywood will elaborate and lie to spin a hero. There’s already enough fakeness going around, why are you blaming Joe as a narcissist for calling out movie producers?
Hollywood makes me sick! They will do ANTHING the have to to make a story more exciting including lying and making up false situations in order to “sell more tickets”! I don’t know about you but, I feel as though they have NO RESPECT for the general public and have to lie in order to make more money! Hearing how they embellished the movie “The Blind Side” really pisses me off! If a story isn’t good enough to STAND ON IT’S OWN MERITS, then don’t tell the story or make the movie! It’s called HONESTY Hollywood!
Rudy seems not to be a likable guy who if full of himself & embellished his story to make himself look good. I’m sure 95% of the movie was made up which led to an inspirational & successful movie
It's a movie. Of course they are going to embellish some things. Rudy still worked his butt off for the team, but it'd be a pretty boring movie if it was just him studying and showing up to practice everyday. Even the real Rudy has come out and said the movie embellished facts. It's a fun movie, everyone relax. I don't see why Joe doesn't just show some class and say the same thing. "It's a movie that took some liberties, but Rudy is a great guy and the movie was great." It's really that simple. He seems kind of petty talking about it the way he does.

Has way better stats than Joe, has more longevity and success than Joe, and unlike Joe Montana, Brady never lost his starting spot to his backup like Montana, don't ever disrespect Brady without thinking, you really thought you had something huh, look at you quiet, bitchless cause you too worried about hating on another man, it's sounds beach as the French in France would say
@@richarddouglashelms6376 LOL 😆 😂 u reported my comment bc I proved u were wrong ok buddy two can play at that game
Rudy was the firstborn, unlike what the movie showed. Perhaps he picked up that nickname as the first of that family at his school.
Thankyou Joe.i thought about it alot and got the answer 👍
After they carried him off the field, Samwise returned to The Shire.
LMMFAO!
Where he and Frodo along with Bilbo and Gandalf smoked some Sweet 🌿🍀 Leaf, reminiscing...!
Yes indeed, precious.
How the fuck did he "ruin" the moment? He was just being honest.
He simply dismissed the embellishments of the movie. He said nothing bad about Rudy and praised him at 1:02 they're the ones being petty.
Yeah, but Montana has also made a point of “setting the record straight” in other interviews as well. Why? Good grief, just let it go. There’s clearly something that gets under Montana’s skin whenever Rudy’s name comes up. It’s just weird.
They guy's whining clears are waaaaayyy too invested in a fictionalized story and are bitter that someone actually great at sports ruined their hero.
Joe’s one of my favourite QBs but his pettiness in regards to Rudy was both sad and pathetic . Not good for his legacy
I don't think it diminishes anything. We know he was insignificant and just had his 10 minutes.
The movie did a hatchet job on Dan Devine, too. He was all for letting Rudy play.
Agreed. It's disgusting.
Go Rudy!
Rudy's dad was raped by hillbillies in Georgia. That really happened.
He didn’t say they mad fun of him.
Oh get over it, joe Montana gave you the truth.
*The GOAT* Joe "Cool" Montana Greatest QB of All-time *4-0 never lossed in the Superbowl*
Never...
Tom Brady the goat. Joe Montana has more playoff losses than Tom Brady does, no one wants to speak about that though
This is why I love Joe Montana. Give this interview with his former center Jesse Sapolu a listen and the story he tells at 21:20 tells it all. Joe got sacked 8x vs. a Philly defense that featured a young Reggie White...wait until you hear what Joe said when he popped his head in the O-line room the next day.
Joe story starts at 21:20

Doesn't matter rudy had one moment in his life joe had fifteen years of football
Joe is awesome
And also it was dan devine who came up with the idea to dress Rudy up for the final game, butin the movie, dan devine doesn't want rudy to play the final game.
As a 49er I love and admire Rudy movie it’s one of those movies that makes you appreciate football. Joe “cool” is still Joe “cool” unlike that other Joe “cool” wannabe
I don't even care if Rudy was offsides, seriously, I don't. Look at the big picture! A walk-on who went through everything he went through getting to play for the FIRST time in the last little bit of time in the last game of his senior year!
Montana said Rudy only got in the game because they play all the seniors in the last game. Savage.
That time when DP confused Vince Vaughn with Jon Favreau
Vince Vaughan is in Rudy too
Joe should also admit his story about the chicken soup bowl game was also exaggerated...it was actually hot menudo!
pate mon dongo!
You can’t take a joke don’t ask! Joe knows…
Joe is mad because the player that didn’t get to dress for that game was Joe Montana.
Common Joe …. Its a inspiration to many ..
Did joe ever get a movie made about his struggles in life.... Errrrrr Nope.. I think its just a bit of Jock Jealousy.. Rudy became an inspirational speaker encouraging people to believe in themselves. Joe comes off as the opposite..
The dude was a national championship in college then 4 SBs, is considered one of the all time greats, married a model he met on a commercial shoot, and is generationally wealthy. Rudy is still milking a largely fabricated decades old movie . What exactly is Montana jealous of here?
@@patrickthomas8890 Actually Rudy is the first to admit to the inconstancies of the film. He's a motivational speaker, encouraging others to go for there dreams, he actually talks though what the film gets wrong and how many others , not featured helped him on his way. But Joe got his dream and some of ours. But I find the haves are always a bit jealous of the have nots.. But Joe to his credit has also done a lot for others. I just think that he should have learned. That if you can't say something positive about someone who has done you no wrong. Best to say nothing at all.
@@ashleywetherallJoe simply said what was inaccurate about the movie, but nothing negative about Rudy, though.
@@Mrraugut That probably true.. But I think it was his tone. Sometimes a persons tone can betray them. His tone was somewhat dismissive.
@@ashleywetherall Didn't sound dismissive to me. At 1:02 he praises Rudy. I think the guys on the show have also manipulated it a bit to misportray Joe as a jerk.
I always thought the end when the stadium was chanting his name wasn't very believable anyways and frankly unnecessary to the story. As for who carried him off the field, how could more than 3 do that in the first place? That part sounds like the movie was accurate.
I admire RUDY and I painted him and gave him my honor cause I knew a guy from my hometown in Texas who played for Notre Dame and never played much cause was a chicano and Rudy played and got his Fame.
Notre Dame used Black athletes long before the U of Texas. Even 6 years before Rudy's thing, the Longhorns were ALL WHITE.
I met RUDY a few yr's ago in cypress calif. at a MORMON CHURCH ! He converted to the MORMON CHURCH !
Joe wasn’t disrespectful. He just made a comment. He said they basically gave all seniors the opportunity to make a play or two during the season. He said Rudy worked hard and was carried off the field.
How dare he tell you the truth? If you, as a ‘so-called’ journalist, don’t want the real answer, don’t ask the question. It’s so pathetic to shame people for telling the truth because it hurts your feelings. Grow up or just stick to disney cartoons.
Greatest of all time
Behind Tom Brady
Greatest of all time.
Rudy came to my school and told us point blank that the movie was fictionalized. He also told us, look at me, I'm a no talent nothing from nowhere and I played d1 ball at the most prestigious university in its hey day and you can realize your dreams to.
It's entertainment. Emotion. and why they say Based on a true story instead of a true story. They have to sugar coat it with happy pills
Joe won 4 super bowls and can't let Rudy have 15 minutes of fame lol
Montana was not being petty. He was telling the truth as he saw it. Would rather he'd lie?
It’s sad how much these guys feel the need to cling to a happier version of reality, even if it’s not true.
And Montana didn’t say it was a joke, so their characterization was wrong too. Sorry to break it to you, but life isn’t a fairy tale. It’s more nuanced than that... and it STILL is exciting and inspiring.
I don’t even like Joe Montana. It’s just annoying to see men who have an influential platform behaving like boys, living in fantasy.
Was Rudy offsides?! 😂😂😂😂🤣🤣
Whatever Joe Cool says I believe. 4 rings !

"I won't say it was a joke."
- Joe Montana
Joe sAiD it WaS a JOke?!?!?!?

I don't think he ruined it
Joe probably thinks like everyone that went to ND In that era…. It was an embarrassment to their alma mater, lots of great came out of ND and the world talks about Rudy 😂
True. Rudy was a feel good movie. Joe spoke the truth. It's a movie, move on people.
truth is the truth , but its still the truth like it or not !!
RUDY: the literal definition of a participation trophy
That's a little extreme. Haha.
Rudy didn't get handed his small bit of playing time and recognition with his team. He worked very, very hard for it. Even Joe Montana said so. That doesn't sound like a participation trophy if you ask me.
Bruh.. Joe.. you're a football icon. Let the dude have his moment. He literally had one moment to shine and you shit on it? For what reason? I get he's just answering the question but c'mon dude sounded a bit petty downplaying it.
No class from Joe. So sad he’s just bitter because he’s not the greatest QB. Lighten up Joe it’s a game you weren’t that great.
Actually Joe Montana is talking out of his a$$ about the jersey scene. It was only, according to the players who were actually there a couple of guys who offered their jerseys to coach Devine so he'd allow Rudy in that game. So maybe over embellished, but it did happen. Just be quiet Joe if you don't know what you're talking about
My brother met Rudy when he came to speak to our HS…said he was an arrogant prick. Blah blah be like me. Blah blah blah play football…
We can have good things again.
He’s full of crap! I saw an interview with the DT that played next Rudy on that final play. He said the Jersey turn in did happen, but not by the whole team. It was a CB
Joe Montana is a narcissist and the fact he can't let Rudy have his own story is just sad
For anybody that truely knows, Montana always had that kind of attitude about him.. Which is why im more of a Rudy fan than a Montana one
He’s just telling the true story which seems to hurt peoples feelings. The vast majority of “true story” movies are almost total fiction. It’s a great movie though, which is what matters. Like they say…don’t let the truth spoil a good story
Joe praised Rudy at 1:02 and in another interview with them he said it's a good movie despite the inaccuracies.
Nah, he’s just telling the truth. Hollywood will elaborate and lie to spin a hero. There’s already enough fakeness going around, why are you blaming Joe as a narcissist for calling out movie producers?
Joe who?
In 50 years somebody will come out of the woodwork who claims their great grandpa played with Tom Brady and he wasn't that great.
Dang Joe, let a dude have just one moment.
Here's some othere movies to expose, red tails, hidden figures
It's a movie. Of course they are going to embellish some things. Rudy still worked his butt off for the team, but it'd be a pretty boring movie if it was just him studying and showing up to practice everyday. Even the real Rudy has come out and said the movie embellished facts. It's a fun movie, everyone relax.
I don't see why Joe doesn't just show some class and say the same thing. "It's a movie that took some liberties, but Rudy is a great guy and the movie was great." It's really that simple. He seems kind of petty talking about it the way he does.

Maybe you guys live in fantasy and joe lives in reality. Typical media, looking for an angle. Make a living on stirring the pot. If u don’t like the answer, maybe u shud not ask the question.
These commentators wish they could be as committed as Rudy or as gifted as Montana. But they aren’t so they sit and blab all day and stir up controversy.
It was a great movie. Joe didn't say anything wrong here and the Devine got done dirty in this movie. He was the one who implemented the rule that ALL SENIORS would play. This movie vilified him and people would yell at him in public and shit.
I like the Rudy sequel that's coming out. It's more of a true story and he goes to prison for running a Ponzi scheme. Yea, that really happened. He's a fucking crook. lol

So Joe was with Rudy that’s awesome
I wish they would keep true life stories true to life- they are so much better that way- it would have been a better movie, as it was it seemed so fake that you didn't know what was true.
Seriously, why the fuck did Joe Montana have to say anything?? Yes, we know it’s a movie and dramatic license is often taken, but to sit and actually take the time to point out all the flaws of certain scenes seems mean spirited. Why can’t he just let Rudy have his movie? I love the film and don’t give a flyin-fuck if the jersey scene never happened, or why he was carried off! It’s still a great story!
Because he was asked a question, and he was being honest
It was a movie, not a documentary. Brians Song also had some liberties. When Joe reflects on the truth it might hurt. Get over it. Still a great story that is somewhat true. What us true is that Rudy got a sack and has the highest sack per play average in ncaa history
Rudy got into notre dame and a game. You didnt!!!!
How was an A-Hole for that
Jon Favreau ≠ Vince Vaughn
Vince Vaughan was in Rudy too. He was on the team with Rudy.
"Rudy" is a great true story, where they took slight liberties telling it. Montana is a loud mouthed jerk trying to pull down a fellow teammate, of all things.
Slight?
Calm down ; such babies, Rudy said it himself it was a movie a lot of this was fiction. It was a movie …. Montana said the truth you guys blew this up shaming Joe put him on the defensive that’s wrong of you… Sean Astin was telling about this movie you didn’t want to hear it …. The NFL conducted a poll from fans on the nicest QBs to meet. Joe Montana, Dan Marino, and John Elway were rated the worst. Steve Young, Troy Aikman, and Brett Favre were rated the best.
They haven't made a movie about Joe.
