Really amazing cover, and I personally loved this season's openings! You've made a really good arrangement here. I've done classical guitar since I was a kid, and I got pretty good, but I could only read tabs and my ability suffered for it. I'm ashamed of my younger self and want to learn music the right way, so I was wondering if you had any tips for playing, especially practicing, that you could share? I'm giving it a go without a teacher, so I'm trying to make sure my progress doesn't stagnate. How do you first treat a new piece, in terms of learning and remembering it? Did you go to school for music to get this good?
Anyways, I would really appreciate it if you could throw a bit of advice my way! I'm currently trying to learn your Made in Abyss cover, which is a far cry from what I'm used to, but very fun to play. My current approach: Playing the song at the speed of a snail.
Hey! Highfive, I used to play classical too for like 4 months but then I got bored and quit, and have been self-taught ever since. To be honest, I never found any use for reading the notes exactly and just went by tabs for the past 4 years.
The only classical thing I recommend you to master is reading rhythm (ex. Quarter notes, eighth notes, sixteenth notes, dotted notes, etc). You'll see that most people's tabs have the standard notation (treble clef staff) as part of their tab, but that is only for telling people the rhythm of the song in most cases.
Learn to count the rhythm while listening to a metronome. After you've got that, practice the songs to a metronome, starting slow at a speed youre comfortable with, and slowly increase the metronome tempo bit by bit. Im currently practicing my arrangement of Pray from Angels of Death and I started from 55BPM (beats per minute), and slowly increasing my tempo by 1BPM each time I play the song once, up until my goal of 145BPM.
The entire time you're practicing, you make a lot of errors that your mind just ignores because it thinks those errors are insignificant. Record a video or audio of yourself playing the song, then listen to it carefully and focus on the parts you made a mistake on. Not doing this will pile up the mistakes and make you feel like you're not progressing. Since you don't have a teacher to criticize you on your mistakes, be your own by recording and correcting.
Now on how I treat a new piece, I would practice the song by sections. For example, I would practice the intro of the song 20 times, then practice the verse 20 times, rest a little then practice the chorus 20 times. After practicing all the sections, practice connecting all of them together. Some people who really struggle with parts of the song could practice in even smaller chunks like 1 measure or 2 measures at a time.
For memorizing a song, it just naturally happens after I practice the song for over 25 hours. If its my own arrangement then maybe about 10 hours.
If you want some extra encouragement, go check out my oldest videos on this channel and see how much I sucked back then. It took a long time to improve, but I only practice about 30 min everyday until 2018 (now I practice 1-3hrs everyday) and Im sure you'll be able to progress faster.
Also another quick tip: If your hands feel tired or sore, its time to stop playing and maybe rest a day. This soreness means you're improving but you exerted yourself a little much.

Wow! Thank you for such a quick and detailed response, you're awesome! I also find it much more natural to read the tabs, but assumed I was just taking the easy route and sacrificing quality. But if you can play this well and say you prefer tabs, then maybe I'll just relax and go with tabs after all. I've never used a metronome before, but I can see why it would be useful. Same for recording, I think I'll try that as soon as I start tomorrow's practice. I just hope my ears are keen enough to pick up any mistakes!
At least I've sorta got the right approach to learning songs: I do like to split them up into chunks and work on them until they sound good. I tend to opt to really small sections like you mentioned, 1 or 2 measures.
I went ahead and took your advice of looking at your older videos, and I can see what you mean, you really have improved a LOT since then! It definitely makes me want to get off my butt and pick up the guitar, in order to get better that much quicker. Thank you so much for your help!

My hand hurts after I done play thing wonderful music and the tab. Please help me how my little fingers stretch the tabs notes "2" in the A and stretch all the way to "5" in the B string. MY HAND HURTS SO MUCH T^T
Can you specify where this is? Usually "5" in the B string is the same as "0" in the high E string since this is standard tuning, but I don't see that anywhere on the tab. Or is this from another song?
Usually a good trick is to take your thumb off the guitar neck, position your fingers so you can reach the notes, and then put the thumb back where-ever comfortable.
That is kinda a example. Do you know the one it said "6 6 4" I cant reach the last 6
And I did put the thumb behind the neck ( or bridge) it hurt my hand so much T^T
