I just installed some more of this stuff on my windows in my apartment that I've lived in foe about 3 years. Forgot I put this film on my west facing patio door at my last apartment and it made a HUGE difference in how hot my living room was cooking in the summer sun all day. I find it's easier to measure and cut the film to size before installing rather than cutting it while trying to apply it. Regular water in a spray bottle, a sturdy credit card, and a utility knife also work fine for installation - so save $20 and don't buy the installation kit.
PRO TIP - to Peel it apart - Cut packing tape in 1/2 and fold the ends. Place under and over the corner and gently peel it will separate perfectly. Find a Ultra Fine Plastic Water Mist Sprayer (or reuse one from Mr. Clean etc - wash thoroughly). Pour less than 1 teaspoon of baby shampoo in the mist sprayer and the rest with distilled water. Spray the entire window thoroughly before application. (Gila recommends spraying the film with water after peeling too however, if it EVER sticks itself together it can be a mess or damage may occur). Instead I apply to the top, left or right, then hold as I peel the clear protect film down evenly while sticking the reflective film to the window. Lastly DO NOT used hard, credit cards, rather find a Silicone Squeegee! Rubber I found can cause damage while Silicone admits perfectly across the film back.
The Thermal imager and especially the Thermometer Gun were terrific . 10 degrees sounds so good and you showed more improvement than that . Should pay for itself .

Gila has a video on youtube on how to install this stuff. If you do it EXACTLY according to the instructions t's not too bad to apply. What they don't tell you is that if you bend this stuff it will wrinkle and the wrinkle is permanent. If you bend it without solution applied it will stick to itself and the piece will be ruined. Also, you cannot use too much of the application solution. Cover every square inch of the window and film with it. I also used a rubber squeegee after putting the film on the window. One other thing.... this stuff scratches easily, don't use paper towels. It really does cut down the heat and glare. I live in Phoenix and my living room window faces directly west into the setting sun, big difference with this stuff on it.
I wonder instead of placing the flim directly on the window itself what if you used the screen solar sheets if that would drop the heat even lower being the sun is protected by a screen vs. Flim? Thank you for the video. I couldn't tell if the heat reduction for the GIla Titanium would be worth the cost. This is the only place to find temperature readings which verify Gila's claim of "UP TO 70%" heat reduction. I too think that a 10 degree difference is worth the installation. Thank You again. :-)
Great video - well done and thanks for sharing. I will be applying this in my sunroom (11 windows and 1 french door) - a room that we cannot use in the summer and look forward to using it more. My only concern is in the winter when I want the heat we will lose some of that. But it is worse in the summer so we will live with it
Georgia here, investing. Two windows facing the sundown side of the world for half the day- also the half of the day i'm home. I'm realizing that it's the reason my smaller room(that the 2 windows are in) is becoming hot, as hell. Devil came down to Georgia for sure. Anywho. Been looking into these in order to figure out what my options are but at this rate, i'm pretty sold. 10 degrees difference for is massive. Thank you for this video! helped me decide whether or not to buy this product. My family is dying! were in Arizona and its not even summer yet and 90+ degrees outside 85+ in the house with blinds and AC blasting. Hope this keeps us from dehydrating we need anything we can get!
I applied this to a single pane window. I have an IR non contact temperature gun. Shot temperatures inside on window surfaces before and after . No difference at all 88 to 91 degs on a 94 deg day on shaded patio window . Older windows will always transmit ambient heat thru frame and glass as frame is not coated . I suggest shade screens over entire window and frame or upgrade 1 window at a time as you can afford it to dual pane. My electric bill at 80 stat setting is 500 to 700 a month in summer . I put an emergency blanket and taped it all around inside drywall of master bedroom as the window is crazy big and 5 am to 1030 am the sun beams in at super heated room without it. Gila film may help on windows in direct sun but not by much . A $4 emergency camping blanket works far better . I did notice standing in front of the window I applied film to fully it is a bit cooler as UV light isnt coming thru as much. If you ever get in a car on very cold day and its sunny you know how you can feel that heat on skin. So it does work in that capacity . Layer up your window coverings is best advice .
Gila stuff works if you apply it good and I love mine. For years my non air conditioned house has been super hot. I have one with lots of heat reducing and I am really impressed with it. If you can't get an air conditioning for some reasons. I also recommend hunter quiet fans if you don't like loud fan noise with super wind speads. I had to heavily mod my room to make it cooler because it's at the worst part of the house and I am so glad the heat is finally super removable. I love my Gila window sun blocker. I even have a curtain for blocking more light if I need in my room. I hope you consider these things I mentioned if you have a room that gets super hot and you don't like heat that much. Even in winter the snow light could be harsh for me sometimes so I like these things for winter too. Heat is avoidable these days and I am so glad to have beaten it finally in my room in the spring and summer. I will definitely get not as much heat strokes from now on.
I just installed this exact version. I majorly failed getting bubbles out so I'll be trying it again but the heat levels are way down now in my daughter's room so it definitely works! The plantinum is not a reference to color it's a reference to the level of heat that this version will block. The higher level is titanium. The Platinum offers something called low-e coating which will also keep you warmer in the winter so I went with the platinum over the titanium. I'm in Fort Lauderdale, FL. Excellent video. Hey thanks for the review. I have been looking at the Platinum gila but have also been looking at the bdf exs35..an external silver application that reflects the sunlight before it heats up the window. Would be interesting to see which one works better.
@@ginni333 ..I ended up choosing an internal application instead of an external to make installation easier. I choose a 5% mirror film (BDF S05) which works very well and cuts a lot of heat but does make the room dark even with bright sunlight. If i had to do it again i would choose the 15%. You lose a bit of the heat rejection but get more transmissible light. And yes the mirror like finish makes a huge difference. Before one corner of the house was like a sauna. But after the tint was applied the room was significantly cooler... The only down side is at night .. the tint becomes a mirror for what's inside.. So you have to pull the blinds.
Are your windows single pane? If you were to temp gun the window directly and not the shades im guessimg the tinted window would be quite a bit warmer due to absorption?
I installed this film back in January as the winter sun was shining right through the windows and the heat was becoming intense. After I installed the film I noticed right away that the heat from the sun was no longer coming into the room but was stopped at the windows. Maybe the windows are a little warmer but overall the heat that comes into the room was dramatically reduced. My furniture is no longer hot to the touch.
Does it work? Yes, it does. I just installed my 1st piece on the lower panel of a double pane, east facing window. The morning sun used to heat up up my office and now it's a lot cooler. It took me 3 hours to do it by myself. More than half the time was spent squeezing out the tiny water bubbles and trimming the edges. The instructions are embedded inside the roll which is frustrating because I couldn't find them until I was cutting my second piece of film. So glad this film is installed on the inside and not the outside. Instructions say you can, within 24 hours, pull the film away to remove any specs of dirt that may have accidentally lodged under it. On the one I just did, one tiny piece of dirt is going to stay under that film for eternity.
I have still not gotten an answer to my basic question, after placing it on several comment pages. Hope this one is different! I have multiple layer glass (Insulation). If I apply the film from inside of home, to the inner most layer of glass, the heat reflected from inner most layer, will continue to raise the temperature of all layer, potentially cause damage in long terms. Do I need to apply the film at outer aspect of window (Exterior) and if so, wouldn't natural elements destroy the film or cause shrinkage, bubble etc? I am in California so no snow but rain, dust and on top of all smog and dirt are continues problem over outside glass. Any help is appreciated.

Follow instructions exactly! That film is super sticky. Mine is on but I have a lot of creases and it was a bear to install by myself. My box did not have instructions and did best I could. Taking a break and You Tube saved me! Next window will be perfect!!!
I would be more interested in the results in the winter time. I know the film is supposed to block radiant heat from inside the home from escaping, but also still blocks the UVs and infrared from sun getting in the home but the infrared coming in would be a good thing. Would these films work if put on backwards, and allow infrared in and also still block radiant heat from in the home escaping? If so that is what I would do, put them on normal in summer, then buy new ones and put on backwards in the winter so I can keep my warm air that is already inside inside and also allow more heat in from the sun.
Very good to know. But this stuff is almost impossible to install with one person. I did it. But of course it was nowhere near as easy as they show in their instruction videos. Allegedly using a newbie. Right.
Interesting, I had the opposite results using the same film on a west facing glass door. Tinted window temp 98’ F Non tinted/plain window 88’ F Less light comes in but shocked at the readings.
im in a similar situation, i did one of two west facing windows that get extreme late afternoon-through-evening sun that heats up the house immensely. the tinted window itself was very hot to the touch, and the tint-less window was barely even lukewarm. i pointed a temperature reader at the closed vertical blinds in front of each window and the tint-less window blinds were about 4 degrees warmer than the tinted window blinds at various peak intensity points during the afternoon to evening. im not sure if the tinted window itself getting so hot affects the indoor temperature. i was just trying to validate that the film made a difference before tinting the very many other west facing windows in the house, including hiring someone to do the 5'x5x second floor foyer window above our front door, which is a feat to reach in itself.
The 35% mirror tint is my tint of choice for house windows -- it let in the perfect amount of light and does not let people see in, even at night. Oh, and cuts down 99% of the UV too....
Great video! What I think is going on with the film is not the color. That I believe is a result of its filtering out mainly the IR band of the sunlight via [1] the optical properties of the plastic and [2] the reflective properties of the metalicized surface. The glass, itself, already filters out a lot of the UV band but is not so efficient at the other end of the visible spectrum.
Does this come off easy? I live in an apartment. Id need to emove it completely before I vacated The management dosn't supply screens for our windows, during cooler months I can't open the window to let cool air in (I have animals) I have to use th AC . Living in Nevada hea, It's been over 100 degrees Fahrenheit,. I'm upstairs which makes it hotter and lots and lots of carpet which I'm not a fan of. Thank you.
I live in Florida and was considering buying this to reduce air conditioner usage. I was skeptical that it would work but now I see it does. I have some very old art that I want to hang on my walls but am afraid of UV damage. So the UV filtering will also be a plus. I was on the fence until I saw this video. I have a huge old window facing east. It got SO hot in my living room. The gila heat control window film made a HUGE DIFFERENCE. I dont have numbers, but it was worth the $50 I spent!!! Can not recommend enough.

I live in South Louisiana and installed this at the beginning of summer. It works so good that I put a smart thermostat with code in my house and turn the AC off from 6AM to 5PM 6 days a week while I’m at work. It’s just the wife home and just the other day I walked in and it was snowing in my living room. Amazing!!
I did the samething test with temperature gun mine didn't show same result with film it was 98 with out film 90 when its very hot with film 102 with out film 96 its like the film gain more heat
Wish they would have had the instructions inside the box to read b4 using. We put the clear side on & threw away the sticky piece as instructions were rolled into the film … found after we cut it up
I installed this stuff and as fast as I got it up on the window, some peeled right off. Other things I noticed: my room was hotter, not cooler, and the windows became way too hot to touch. Others have said they had window glass crack because the heat doesn't truly reflect out. The issue made sense because the heat penetrates through the glass, then attempts to reflect back because the films are inside. The better method is to have the film outside to stop the rays from coming inside in the first place. I ended up ripping what didn't come down off my windows and returning it to the store for a refund. I got paper shades, used spray adhesive on one side, and laid down mylar film to relect the rays back w/o having the risk of the windows breaking. It's not perfect but it keeps the cooler than the film did.
I am having the same exact issue! I have the titanium which is extremely close to what the platinum is supposed to do. It just gets really hot and radiates the heat inside. I have not seen a difference in temperature according to my thermometer. And yes I installed it correctly and all of that. I noticed the guy in the video is measuring the temperature with it behind bamboo shades. I'm interested if the physical film is hotter for him too. I just got off the phone with a Gila representative and they say it is normal for it to heat up. He claimed that it absorbs the energy and slowly dissipates it out through the same window it came in from. I asked if any of their products actually reflect the energy and he said no. What a shame. So that means it isn't the miracle product I was hoping it would be. I wonder if ANY companies make one that truly reflects the energy back outside. That is what I want. It is my backyard so I don't care how it looks.
@@JacobSchwegel In early spring and late autumn the sun rays enters the room and heats the room to confortable levels without using AC. If I install this film the temperatures will drop because the rays will not warmup the room? I searched this question but didn t fiind an answer.
The GILA installation videos are confusing. They show almost identical installations for the static cling film as well as the adhesive film. The only difference seems to be how the film is separated from it's backing....sort of . The static cling video shows this film isn't actually attached to anything. You set aside the white protective paper sheet after cutting - then install. The adhesive film video you have to carefully separate the film (using bits of tape to get it started and to keep it flat) from the white backing and then install. But both show liberally spraying both the window and the film with application solution before placing the film on the glass. Why have two types of films (adhesive and static cling) if the installation is identical? The "static cling" designation implies that static cling rather than adhesive holds the film on the window..so why do they use the liquid application solution for both? .One of the videos alternated the how-to of both types of Gila films yet only showed CUTTING and MEASURING for the static cling It showed cutting measuring and INSTALLING for the adhesive film. Am I missing something?
Hi I think the installation is the same as that is just how you put up tint on windows. If you don’t want bubbles, want a good adhesion and proper fit to the window you are going to use the same technique, whether static cling or with adhesive film. The application of soapy water lets the tint move around to position the tint, but doesn’t affect the adhesive or static from working. As to why the have two I can’t tell you that. But the application of tint is the same. Watch some other videos of people tinting cars and you see the same technique is used.
So how the hell do you get the stuff to lay straight? It will not even lay straight once the plastic is taken off of the back. And then when you go to apply it to the window just f****** sticks everywhere
@@JacobSchwegel yep, I finally got it applied. Put I cannot see out of it at night. That what I wanted it for. I have a very bright light outside as well, and anyone outside can still see straight in. It gives no security at all. And it is a pain in the ass to handle. It clings to the window, it folds over itself and gets stuck, the peel off plastic just rips . Just my opinion, but it's trash.

Are your windows single pane? If you were to temp gun the window directly and not the shades im guessimg the tinted window would be quite a bit warmer due to absorption?

I installed this film back in January as the winter sun was shining right through the windows and the heat was becoming intense. After I installed the film I noticed right away that the heat from the sun was no longer coming into the room but was stopped at the windows. Maybe the windows are a little warmer but overall the heat that comes into the room was dramatically reduced. My furniture is no longer hot to the touch.
Does anyone know if it works at night as well??? Its not only the sun that keeps my room warm unless I have major other problems I'm unaware of

Does it work? Yes, it does. I just installed my 1st piece on the lower panel of a double pane, east facing window. The morning sun used to heat up up my office and now it's a lot cooler. It took me 3 hours to do it by myself. More than half the time was spent squeezing out the tiny water bubbles and trimming the edges. The instructions are embedded inside the roll which is frustrating because I couldn't find them until I was cutting my second piece of film. So glad this film is installed on the inside and not the outside. Instructions say you can, within 24 hours, pull the film away to remove any specs of dirt that may have accidentally lodged under it. On the one I just did, one tiny piece of dirt is going to stay under that film for eternity.

I have multiple layer glass (Insulation). If I apply the film from inside of home, to the inner most layer of glass, the heat reflected from inner most layer, will continue to raise the temperature of all layer, potentially cause damage in long terms. Do I need to apply the film at outer aspect of window (Exterior) and if so, wouldn't natural elements destroy the film or cause shrinkage, bubble etc? I am in California so no snow but rain, dust and on top of all smog and dirt are continues problem over outside glass.
Any help is appreciated.

Follow instructions exactly! That film is super sticky. Mine is on but I have a lot of creases and it was a bear to install by myself. My box did not have instructions and did best I could. Taking a break and You Tube saved me! Next window will be perfect!!!

I would be more interested in the results in the winter time. I know the film is supposed to block radiant heat from inside the home from escaping, but also still blocks the UVs and infrared from sun getting in the home but the infrared coming in would be a good thing. Would these films work if put on backwards, and allow infrared in and also still block radiant heat from in the home escaping? If so that is what I would do, put them on normal in summer, then buy new ones and put on backwards in the winter so I can keep my warm air that is already inside inside and also allow more heat in from the sun.
Very good to know. But this stuff is almost impossible to install with one person. I did it. But of course it was nowhere near as easy as they show in their instruction videos. Allegedly using a newbie. Right.

Interesting, I had the opposite results using the same film on a west facing glass door.
Tinted window temp 98’ F
Non tinted/plain window 88’ F
Less light comes in but shocked at the readings.
You must have a draft at window/wall area where hot air is getting in.
im in a similar situation, i did one of two west facing windows that get extreme late afternoon-through-evening sun that heats up the house immensely. the tinted window itself was very hot to the touch, and the tint-less window was barely even lukewarm. i pointed a temperature reader at the closed vertical blinds in front of each window and the tint-less window blinds were about 4 degrees warmer than the tinted window blinds at various peak intensity points during the afternoon to evening.
im not sure if the tinted window itself getting so hot affects the indoor temperature. i was just trying to validate that the film made a difference before tinting the very many other west facing windows in the house, including hiring someone to do the 5'x5x second floor foyer window above our front door, which is a feat to reach in itself.

It is see through as far as which direction the light shines through, at night it is a mirror on the inside and cant see out
The 35% mirror tint is my tint of choice for house windows -- it let in the perfect amount of light and does not let people see in, even at night. Oh, and cuts down 99% of the UV too....

Great video! What I think is going on with the film is not the color. That I believe is a result of its filtering out mainly the IR band of the sunlight via [1] the optical properties of the plastic and [2] the reflective properties of the metalicized surface. The glass, itself, already filters out a lot of the UV band but is not so efficient at the other end of the visible spectrum.
Does this come off easy? I live in an apartment. Id need to emove it completely before I vacated The management dosn't supply screens for our windows, during cooler months I can't open the window to let cool air in (I have animals) I have to use th AC . Living in Nevada hea, It's been over 100 degrees Fahrenheit,. I'm upstairs which makes it hotter and lots and lots of carpet which I'm not a fan of.

I live in Florida and was considering buying this to reduce air conditioner usage. I was skeptical that it would work but now I see it does. I have some very old art that I want to hang on my walls but am afraid of UV damage. So the UV filtering will also be a plus. I was on the fence until I saw this video. Thanks for helping me make up my mind.

I have a huge old window facing east. It got SO hot in my living room. The gila heat control window film made a HUGE DIFFERENCE. I dont have numbers, but it was worth the $50 I spent!!! Can not recommend enough.

Did any neighbors ever comment on the reflection? What if you left the blinds up? For example I’d like to be able to see outside but reduce sun heat.
The reflection is not that bad at the exterior and you can see out the window just fine.

I live in South Louisiana and installed this at the beginning of summer. It works so good that I put a smart thermostat with code in my house and turn the AC off from 6AM to 5PM 6 days a week while I’m at work. It’s just the wife home and just the other day I walked in and it was snowing in my living room. Amazing!!
I did the samething test with temperature gun mine didn't show same result with film it was 98 with out film 90 when its very hot with film 102 with out film 96 its like the film gain more heat

Wish they would have had the instructions inside the box to read b4 using. We put the clear side on & threw away the sticky piece as instructions were rolled into the film … found after we cut it up

No. Installed on both windows. On the inside only.
I installed this stuff and as fast as I got it up on the window, some peeled right off. Other things I noticed: my room was hotter, not cooler, and the windows became way too hot to touch. Others have said they had window glass crack because the heat doesn't truly reflect out. The issue made sense because the heat penetrates through the glass, then attempts to reflect back because the films are inside. The better method is to have the film outside to stop the rays from coming inside in the first place. I ended up ripping what didn't come down off my windows and returning it to the store for a refund. I got paper shades, used spray adhesive on one side, and laid down mylar film to relect the rays back w/o having the risk of the windows breaking. It's not perfect but it keeps the cooler than the film did.

Single panes. The directions on the box don't advise you not to use the films on double panes.
I am having the same exact issue! I have the titanium which is extremely close to what the platinum is supposed to do. It just gets really hot and radiates the heat inside. I have not seen a difference in temperature according to my thermometer. And yes I installed it correctly and all of that. I noticed the guy in the video is measuring the temperature with it behind bamboo shades. I'm interested if the physical film is hotter for him too.
I just got off the phone with a Gila representative and they say it is normal for it to heat up. He claimed that it absorbs the energy and slowly dissipates it out through the same window it came in from. I asked if any of their products actually reflect the energy and he said no. What a shame. So that means it isn't the miracle product I was hoping it would be. I wonder if ANY companies make one that truly reflects the energy back outside. That is what I want. It is my backyard so I don't care how it looks.

Hard to fathom why you would leave blinds and drapes down in a video reviewing heat control film.
They retained the heat better with the devices I was using. A simple window was a little more tricky.

Adding a piece of black electrical tape to the window will give you a more accurate reading with the IR camera.

@@JacobSchwegel In early spring and late autumn the sun rays enters the room and heats the room to confortable levels without using AC. If I install this film the temperatures will drop because the rays will not warmup the room? I searched this question but didn t fiind an answer.
@@nikespeed14 correct. The film reflects sunrise. The home in the video is in the south and has long hot summers.

The GILA installation videos are confusing. They show almost identical installations for the static cling film as well as the adhesive film. The only difference seems to be how the film is separated from it's backing....sort of . The static cling video shows this film isn't actually attached to anything. You set aside the white protective paper sheet after cutting - then install. The adhesive film video you have to carefully separate the film (using bits of tape to get it started and to keep it flat) from the white backing and then install. But both show liberally spraying both the window and the film with application solution before placing the film on the glass.
Why have two types of films (adhesive and static cling) if the installation is identical? The "static cling" designation implies that static cling rather than adhesive holds the film on the window..so why do they use the liquid application solution for both? .One of the videos alternated the how-to of both types of Gila films yet only showed CUTTING and MEASURING for the static cling It showed cutting measuring and INSTALLING for the adhesive film. Am I missing something?
Hi I think the installation is the same as that is just how you put up tint on windows. If you don’t want bubbles, want a good adhesion and proper fit to the window you are going to use the same technique, whether static cling or with adhesive film. The application of soapy water lets the tint move around to position the tint, but doesn’t affect the adhesive or static from working. As to why the have two I can’t tell you that. But the application of tint is the same. Watch some other videos of people tinting cars and you see the same technique is used.
So how the hell do you get the stuff to lay straight? It will not even lay straight once the plastic is taken off of the back. And then when you go to apply it to the window just f****** sticks everywhere

@@JacobSchwegel yep, I finally got it applied. Put I cannot see out of it at night. That what I wanted it for. I have a very bright light outside as well, and anyone outside can still see straight in. It gives no security at all. And it is a pain in the ass to handle. It clings to the window, it folds over itself and gets stuck, the peel off plastic just rips . Just my opinion, but it's trash.
