      This dance is based on an old Chinese story that was mentioned in the novel. Although it was told in Japan, it was told the same way. It tells the story about a wife who caught her husband having an affair with a courtesan in his concubine. Heartbroken, the wife walked in the show and commits suicide.

    The movie took many liberties, because it's actually Mameha who performed this dance in Chapter 23. Although never fully elaborated on, the dance on stage that Sayuri performs, tells the story of a woman who suspects her husband of infidelity, and waits outside in the snow to catch her husband leaving his mistress. Unfortunately, a blizzard sweeps over the land and she succumbs to the elements.

      id say it is a take on the famous kamogawa odori! it is a famous dance which is performed once a year in Kyoto! It is usually performed at the kaburenjo! Although like so many things in THIS movie which are kind of radically different to how things truly are in the hanamachi in Kyoto... this dance certainly has its basis in the Kamogawa Odori!

    • @angelabby2379
      @angelabby2379 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@DIJITALSON true it is radically different, but they knowingly did so, because its the art of storytelling, the actress are not geisha so in order to make people think they are talented, they make the movement more exaggerated and lavish. in the end they did succeed making us think these women are talented and it makes us understand more about their story and struggle, same goes for the costume, they actually did the traditional geisha makeup and hair but it doesnt look good on mameha, so they changed it to what u see in the movie, sayuri and hatsumomo do look good though.
      and even though its different, it still retains some reference or an iconic movement that kinda existed in the dance ex the back bend.

    I can't help but wonder....once a Geisha gets their patron and serve their master for life, what happens to the geisha once they reach their feeble and final years? Do they finally retire? Or do they have to continue serving their patron until they simply pass out and die from old age? 0_o I must know!!!

    • @aurinkossa9454
      @aurinkossa9454 7 ปีที่แล้ว +69

      Geishas do not have a Master per se. They have a patron who will help them pay for expenses and such, but the patron never becomes a "master." Just a benefactor. The geisha can retire really whenever, depending on their financial circumstances and such.
      Mineko Iwasaki details this more in her autobiography Geisha, A Life.
      Iwasaki was actually the geisha interviewed for Memoirs of a Geisha, but the author horrendously misrepresented geisha culture in order to appeal to his western audience. As a result, Iwasaki took it upon herself to come out of anonymity to write about her actual experiences to dispel the falsehoods that Memoirs perpetuated.

      it is grotesque what do u expect, this is the art of storytelling, do u think people would think that she is talented by showing the original dance in less then 60 seconds ( the original dance would have been at least 15 minutes of her flaying around)

    • @morganolfursson2560
      @morganolfursson2560 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    • @morganolfursson2560
      @morganolfursson2560 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@rozee2561 If you watch the film "The tea house of the august moon" made by an american director, you have a dance scene and the actress dancing is giving not only an accurate performance, but the performance, by even the strictest Japanese dance expert is absolutely spectacular. It is Buyo at its finest. So this has nothing to do with the nationality of the director or the actor, this has to do with they ethic and the quality of their work.
      When Lucy Liu or the other actors of Kill Bill give their speeches in japanese, there is a single inaccuracy. That's because Tarantino and Daniel Mann pay attention to those details. The problem with Sayuri is that it is a shitty film director by a shitty director who couldn't have given less of a fuck about the accuracy of the rendition, based on an even shittier book written by a shitty so called author, who also couldn't have given less of a fuck about accuracy.

      Latika Sharma There’s an excellent recording on here showing the Kabuki play this came from, complete with English narration.

    Isn’t Gong Li way older than her character is supposed to be?

      She was 40 when she played Hatsumomo but we don't really know how old is the character

      @@a.g.demada5263 I'm pretty sure the book said Hatsumomo was in her 20s at some point.

      @@Sawrattan I don't remember that but it's possible because in the movie, Auntie mentionned Hatsumomo managed to pay her debt when she was 20

    What a joke, if a geisha really performed they way that Sayuri does here - they would think she had gone crazy. Leave it to Hollywood to drag tradition down for entertainment. This is how real maiko and geiko should look th-cam.com/video/K4Dcy69QFwk/w-d-xo.html now compare it to the movie.

    Although beautiful, this is nowhere close to an actual dance performance by a geisha or maiko..in traditional dances, each step is fixed n has a meaning (unlike the freestyle nonsense that Sayuri is doing)..also the idea is to highlight the beauty of the kimono, not run around like crazy n damage it
