I know Michelle Yeoh because she is a good friend of my mother in law, and once she told me that when they did this scene she was furious at the director and the staff because on chicken got killed and the other got a broken leg.
She demanded that the one with the broken leg was taken to a veterinarian and that the dead one was cooked and eaten by the staff. She said that if they didn't conform to her request she would leave the set right there and then and would not return.
Michelle Yeoh is vegetarian but she said that she has often been invited to restaurants by people who don't know she is and always ate whatever meat was served to her with tears in her heart, because the worse thing than eating what she was served would be to refuse it and risking having it thrown away. Then the animal would have really died for nothing.
I already liked her but the day she told me that, she became my hero.

I believe in this way for vegetariana to be consecuent with their beliefs on life being sacred. If the animal is already dead and is going to be thrown away if they don't eat it (provided no one else Will) then its more disrespectful for the animal to have died for nothing

@@lovelyfrancesquita6603 A friend of mine who is a vegetarian would put the meat to the side and take it to her work or church or give it to a friend for the same concept. She understands that some animals are only bred and raised to be eaten, and as bad as that is it would be pointless for their existence if they weren't eaten and wasted.

The title says 'transformation into a Geisha.' Ironically in this clip, Ichiyo/Sayuri (ZiYi Zhang) is not yet a Geisha, but a 'Maiko.' Her make ups, her accessories & the kimono she wore; were all in Maiko style. Geishas don't wear that much of make ups & accessories and a Geisha's kimono is very different.

What's sad about Hollywood is when they cast foreign actors they keep casting the same actor again and again and again for everything. It's like there were no other asian women alive in the industry during that 4-5 year period. These 2 and Ken Watanabe were literally in all movies where an asian was needed. It got boring. It's so lazy and narrowminded.

    • @Janedoesasmr1

THANK YOU. They'd rather hire a Korean actress and a Chinese actress for the main roles of a story about an important part of Japanese culture just because they're more famous instead of hiring a Japanese cast (which they obviously made no effort researching since there were so many famous Japanese actresses at the time and not to mention it would have avoided an unnecessary cost of training the said actresses to speak Japanese and catch a Japanese accent). It has a disturbing "meh they all look the same anyway, now let's talk money" vibe to it which is a little too common in Hollywood.

Big names sell movies. It's honestly not that deep. And to ignore how amazing of an actress Michelle yeoh is a disservice. She works hard and is talented. I'm very happy for her. The actual sad thing about Hollywood is that there aren't many roles to go around for people of colour. To let smaller names get bigger over time naturally. To blame a top actress like Michelle yeoh for her taking her rightful place as a bankable actress in the industry saying it's taking from other that could be casted instead is small minded!

@@Janedoesasmr1 actually they tried to search for japanese actresses that would take the roles of sayuri mameha and hatsumomo but all refused. The general sentiment of the japanese public is that a. It was a secretive world and they didn't want it to be exposed through a western lens b. That the west usually assumed geishas as prostitutes so they didn't want the stigma to be floating around and c. Many actresses thought that taking on the role would bring them criticism so it wasn't worth it. In the end the filmmakers decided to open up the casting to other asians and that how we got the actual female cast

They really took some liberties to make geisha look more westernized because its clear the costume designers and director valued aesthetic over accuracy.
I'm aware they toned down a lot of how a maiko and geisha really appear due to thinking it would scare western audiences but this entire film and the portrayal of geisha during that time period is such a drastic oversight filled with unnecessary melodrama under the guise of this being a memoir when it is a man who made up things about a real geisha to sensationalize the profession he failed to understand.

An auto horn. A large long hearse of a car, black and ominous pulled to thecurb. A man leaned out.
      ‘You a Martian?’
      ‘Yes.’
‘Just the man I gotta see. Hop in quick, the chance of a lifetime. Hop in. Take you to a real nice joint where we can talk. Come on’don’t stand there.’
As if hypnotized, Ettil opened the door of the car, got in.
      They drove off.[...]
Now Van Plank, hands crossed on his chest, was surveying his Martian discovery.
‘What I want you for, E.V., is this. It’s the most magnanimous idea I ever got in my life. I don’t know how it came to me, just in a flash. I was sitting home tonight and I thought to myself, My God, what a picture it would make! Invasion of Earth by Mars. So what I got to do? I got to find an adviser for the film. So I climbed in my car and found you and here we are. Drink up! Here’s to your health and our future. Skoal!’
      ‘But”’ said Ettil.
‘Now, I know, you’ll want money. Well, we got plenty of that. Besides, I got a li’l black book full of peaches I can lend you.’
‘I don’t like most of your Earth fruit and”’
‘You’re a card, mac, really. Well, here’s how I get the picture in my mind’listen.’ He leaned forward excitedly. ‘We got a flash scene of the Martians at a big powwow, drummin’ drums, gettin’ stewed on Mars. In the background are huge silver cities”’
‘But that’s not the way Martian cities are”’
‘We got to have color, kid. Color. Let your pappy fix this. Anyway, there are all the Martians doing a dance around a fire”’
      ‘We don’t dance around fires”’
‘In this film you got a fire and you dance,’ declared Van Plank, eyes shut, proud of his certainty. He nodded, dreaming it over on his tongue. ‘Then we got a beautiful Martian woman, tall and blond.’
      ‘Martian women are dark”’
‘Look, I don’t see how we’re going to be happy, E.V. By the way, son, you ought to change your name. What was it again?’
      ‘Ettil.’
‘That’s a woman’s name. I’ll give you a better one. Call you Joe. Okay, Joe. As I was saying, our Martian women are gonna be blond, because, see, just because. Or else your poppa won’t be happy.

Remember: MoaG is a work of fiction.
Sayuri and all of the characters are made up, Golden did this so that if he had a slip up or failed to understand something culture wise, the fiction part comes into play.
He admitted to filling in details and making things up and went as far to say that he did not use Mineko as a direct source only inspiration.
I personally think he may have used Sayo Masuda's story as the real inspiration for Sayuri and her geisha sister as Pumpkin but didn't credit Sayo. There are more parallels with moag and Sayo's autobiography than there are with Mineko Iwasaki.
Sayo, was not a famous geisha in Kyoto so her story didnt have the draw I suppose. She was an average onsen geisha in Suwa, Nagano, Japan pre WWII and she had very little positives in her life; Mineko was the complete opposite. Iwasaki was near royalty even before her tenure ship as a geiko began and she belonged to a higher class hanamachi unlike Sayo.
I do not think Golden ever intended to tell an accurate account of Mineko's life which is where I think the problems arose. She likely assumed he was wanting to know about her life and experiences in details but in reality he had a predetermined idea of the narrative of his story.
    - He also had Liza Dalby's expertise, but did little to use her knowledge appropriately or because moag is a work of fiction maybe he felt he could get away with more. Golden has stated in the past that his book is accurate but the characters are made up but we know that his book and accounts are not accurate because he cannot know what life in Kyoto was like pre WWII. I think much of what he fails to understand or relate on paper was simply lost in translation. He writes the entire story with an overtly negative tone, which I think is his overall view of the geisha as a whole. Otherwise, I feel he would approach it in a neutral matter of fact way in the way that Liza Dalby does in her book Geisha.

I didn't notice it when I first watched this movie, but they really westernized her makeup here which is sad. In the books they are still doing the half moon lip where you only mark your lower lip and leave the upper one white. Her eye makeup is also obviously western liner and mascara.
Geisha switch to using that style of makeup after the war in the book, sans white face makeup.
I believe the robe is technically wrong too. You can't wear a robe that drags along the ground when you're running around the streets of Gion. I'm pretty sure those dresses were special for dance performances.

This is one of those instances where the book is a lot better than the movie. I understand it’s two different mediums and I usually think of books and movies as two separate and distinct things bc most adaptations are loosely based on their source material and make big changes or leave a lot out, but I didn’t feel like this movie brought the source material alive at all. I saw it once and read the book at least six times. I couldn’t put the book down. I was working long shifts the first time I read this book and I remember reading it on every break I got and sometimes reading it when I wasn’t busy. I didn’t want to put it down at all. I found the movie to be boring and I was disappointed bc I liked the book so much. If I remember right there weren’t a whole lot of changes, it just didn’t come alive. The way it was done made it seem boring to me. The characters weren’t at all like I imagined them to be and it just didn’t hit like the book did.

The book is just as bad as the film since both do not properly represent geisha.
It's a known fact that the author changed much of the subjects original accounts to make them more sad and melodramatic he even admitted to "filling in the gaps" on parts that she didn't disclose in her life and entirely making up the mizuage part.
This story is based on one of the most illustrious geisha districts that did not engage in this practice.
She has come forth to say that this story poorly reflects her accounts and time as a geisha and in her words it was "an injustice" to her life.

Sayuri is based off of two distinct geisha: Mineko Iwasaki and Sayo Masuda.
Mineko was the most popular geisha from Kyoto during the 1960s and 70s. She even entertained Audrey Hepburn, Prince Charles and Twiggy. She lived the life of a celebrity essentially, and had a hot and cold affair with a Japanese movie star who pursued her for a decade before they got together - after they ended the relationship they remained good friends until his death. She was not forced to sell her virginity and in her words her career as a geisha was largely positive.
Sayo Masuda was a tragic geisha during the 40s and 50s. She was sold into a poor geisha house in Nagoya where she was abused and beaten, and sold under the false pretenses of being a virgin at least 3 times to different men. She witnessed the death of another geisha who allowed herself to die due to toxic shock poisoning from an untreated STD. She survived alcoholism after her best friend and former geisha sister died suddenly. She nearly got married to a well off man, who treated her with nothing but respect and kindness but he could not publicly announce his engagement to her due to it possibly ruining his reputation as mayor elect due to her being an onsen geisha - onsen geisha often acted as yujo or licensed prostitutes.

She said it was because she had earlier watched The Last Samurai (with Tom Cruise) and she didn't liked it at all because of that... I can relate as a Spaniard when I watched Mission:Impossible 2 (also with Tom Cruise) and Knight & Day (yeah, Tom Cruise again) when they showed a surrealistic mixture of Seville, Valencia and Pamplona's very different traditions and festivities... I remember the laughter in the audience in front of that all-American utter ignorance.

Years later, I cannot get over how inaccurate the hairstyles are and how sloppy their kimono look. The only real Japanese actors and actresses are all supporting and the mains are all Chinese. Pumpkin, the only Japanese actress to play a maiko/geisha in this movie, had the only near authentic appearance of a real geisha. Was this a deliberate choice of the director? The Chinese actresses’ hairstyles were so glaringly inaccurate, anyone who’s actually seen a geisha would know right away.

    • @ΨΣχ_1988Ω

The problem is that they couldn't find Japanese actresses for the film because they didn't speak English and didn't want to learn it. This was the situation with the film Kill Bill, when Japanese actresses refused the role of Gogo due to the fact that they did not know English, where only after Tarantino himself assured that the role would not require knowledge of English, they finally found an actress.

  • @jhasjhis9
    @jhasjhis9 ปีที่แล้ว

People complaining about how they have the same Chinese actresses in many movies during this period and should have allowed other actors in these role don’t understand how many films are made. These actors paved the way to allow for Asian films to be shown and made due to their success and talent because these films were created with them in mind as the talent. If they can’t guarantee a film will be profitable then it wouldn’t be made. There’s more people who work on a film than just actors and actresses. Additionally, the film is based on a book written by a Caucasian guy so I am not sure what authenticity you are looking for. The role of an actor and a story teller is to play a part and to write a story.

In the late 90's when this movie was made, the world wasn't so fucking uptight with a stick up their ass about everything like they are today. You could still make and enjoy satirical movies like those from Mel Brooks. I mean a movie like Blazing Saddles had Richard Pryor as one of the principal writers of the film. We used to be able to laugh as a society and enjoy ourselves. Now we have people charging the stage and assaulting comedians because they can't laugh.
So tell me in all 100% honesty. Does it really actually matter that a Chinese actress plays the roll of a Japanese woman from 100 years ago? Be honest! No it doesn't matter and you know it. Why because at the end of the day, IT'S A MOVIE!!!! It's not a documentary by David Attenborough on the life and times of a Geisha. It's a fictional story, like the Batman movies. So no it doesn't matter, they could have used anybody they wanted. It's their movie. If you don't like it, nobody is making you watch it. Get over yourself.

That " look" they say- when women glimpses a man then drops her eyes- is said to be the look to stop man in his track in general. And you don't have to be geisha to do it. The look speaks of invitation, yet timidness and innocence, mystery and intrigue. It is but a second but it hides so many secrets, secrets that man wants to find out. It is an art of seduction, the first step to invite man to courting., to interest him and to catch his eye.

As a Maiko, shouldn't she have more kanzashi in her hair? Especially for her debut? I've never seen a Maiko with only one. Also her hair is WAY too flat to her head for a Maiko or Geisha. It's also kind of annoying that the film always uses the term Geisha even when she's clearly a Maiko.

@Remi4Eva Yeah, a Maiko is an apprentice Geisha that is going to the parties and making contacts while still taking the lessons and learning the craft. Their kimonos and jewelry are on loan from their teachers as they haven't earned enough to buy their own, yet. Considering she's only just gotten the hair style (inaccurate as it was) and this was her first time going out in public on a job, she SHOULD be a Maiko. 🤷🏻‍♀

I love the book too, but I always read it knowing that it was mostly pure fiction and not indicative of geisha life at all. I open it expecting that, and am not disappointed that way. I have other books by Liza Dalby and Mineko Iwasaki for when I want to read about how it REALLY was to be a geisha.

    百均の造花みたいな簪、肩揚げのよれよれした着付け。。。安っぽい半襟、しまいには、着物の裾を引きづって玄関を通る、、、ホント、これがハリウッド映画なの?
