It’s not weird. The chairman was supposed to be in his late twenties here, and Chiyo was approaching adolescence. Iwamura saw a sad and hurting child and had compassion on her. He wanted to show her kindness to bring a little light into her life and remind her she was worthy of respect and dignity. He gave her a gift ****without expecting anything in return****. He did not bribe her, he did not ask to see her again, he did not attach strings to his gift, he did not manipulate her, he did not oppress her, he did not disrespect her. His next interaction with her happens after she has entered adulthood and he recognizes her by her blue eyes, seeing how her situation of slavery and poverty has not changed, and he has compassion for her again. He sends a beacon of light to her again in the form of Mameha, giving her a chance at a respectable living, and a life away from the destitution she faces every day. As she develops into a formidable and desirable woman, with a bright mind and kind spirit, he begins to develop romantic feelings for her, watching her blossom into a paragon of beauty and art and goodness not only in her career, but in her womanhood as well. He honors her always, and continually puts her interests before his own. He did not groom her or trick her in any way, he showed her kindness and respect and that’s why she was drawn to him in the first place.
Thanks for this explanation. I haven’t seen the film, and am too used to older men grooming girls for prostitution, so the scene made me uncomfortable. I’m glad to learn the actions were sincere.

It's not about sexual love, but delivering kindness to a kid when you noticed that the kid need to be given an empathy. Than could be the higlight of the day for the kid, and remembered by the kid for the rest of his/her life. Maybe because she's as old as his children so that made him give her an act of mercy. Secondly, her eyes that made him remembers her, and secretly helped her in the background. That memory of 1 kindness is cheering her up when she grow up, quietly helping her to facing her daily struggle, inspiring her to have a thing to do in this life. Gave her a sense of hope & aim in life. She became fond of him as her "role model", "idol", etc.; That one person that's good in her life..... Just a head’s up for some important info on Japan for context : the age of consent for sex changed from 13 years old to 16 years old just this past summer 2023. Also, pre-war time, Japanese have always been more liberal when in comes to sex. It stems from the Heian period where after the Meiji era regulated matters more in order to emulate a more so called civilized western approach because of the reopening of the country by the Americans. Hence, don’t be surprised if this chairman fell for a child.
In the USA it used to be legal to keep black people as slaves, so I see “that’s how things used to be” as the START of a discussion about how humans did shitty things throughout history, not the end of the discussion where we all shrug and accept it.

The thing that confuses me : why did the chairman secretly send Mameha to guide Chiyo to become a geisha? If he fell in love with chiyo, why did he make chiyo a geisha who cannot be a legal wife?
Maybe because when they met again by accident, he saw her situation didn't change and wanted to be sure she'll have a good life. According to the book, he's already married but Mameha says that some of their clients are trapped into arranged weddings.
