I love Mameha's make up and the way she is dressed at Chyio's presentation. Very simple makeup, clothes and simple hairstyle. To not steal away the attention from Chyio. Very different from Hatsumno and Pumpkin
@@franz3810@franz3810 I´m not saying that she didn´t like attention. i am saying that she is different from Hatsumno in Pumpkin´s presentation I am saying that she chose to not draw attention to herself at Chyio´s night
@@franz3810 the costumes are far from accurate but they are stylized for movie and can be interpreted in multiple ways. Mameha does not need to always be in the spot the same way Hatsumomo does, she dresses simply and elegantly because she's 'independent' geisha who can afford her 'freedom' the way other geisha and maiko can never achieve, according to the movie, while Hatsumomo still lives under the rule of Mother even though she is beautiful and well-paid geisha.
In the book is clarified that Mameha did dress simple to help Sayuri shine. It was part of her plan because she new that Hatsumomo couldn't do that for pumpkin and that will affect her, making Sayuri more succesfull.
Can we also sympathize with Nobu? He saved his friend, which left his face scarred. He was judged very hard for it and then was technically used even if Chiyo was forced to do it
The Chairman pretty much spelt it out at the end, hoping for Nobu to have a chance at peace and happiness. Despite the fact that this is growing story of compassion and love between Chiryo and the Chairman, Nobu is an unwitting obstacle, though not a malicious one because the story shows honour and respect for his character.
Sayuri loved the Chairman becasue he was the only person alive who was kind to her when a child and gave her the motivation to live because she had lost everything when she got sold and her sister was sent to a brothal instead of the same geisha house she was.
Because the chairmen seen she made his friend happy and he felt he owed his friend for saving his life. But in the end he couldn't hold back his feelings. I love this movie. If you haven't seen The other Boleyn Girl it's awesome too. Also the Man in the iron mask with Leo DiCaprio. And The Count of Monte Cristo. Enjoy these movies they are excellent.
But also because mameha planned for them to get together. Remember the end when Nobu asked for Chiyo's hand in marriage? Chiyo was talking to mameha about it and found out it was one of her schemes.
4:39 I love how they put in this quick scene where the Chairman is looking for a match for his cigarette. This is a perfect opportunity for Sayuri to offer a light and make conversation, but just at that moment Mameha asks her to pay attention to Nobu. A missed opportunity.
Saturi, aka Chyio, fell in love with the Chairman when she was a little girl of 9 or 10 on the bridge. When she was sad and he bought her a cup of sweet ice.
The book was not well received in Japan, as it didn’t accurately depict Japanese life or culture at the time. In fact, Arthur Golden, the author, interviewed a famous geisha and changed the source material just for drama.
Japanese people didn't want to sully the reputation of Geishas and spread misinformation by acting in this film. This film and book did not accurately depict Geishas.
@@shadeofmidna-9897 oh I see :/ I'm japanese so I always found it really aggravating that people can't cast japanese actors for japanese characters, but they could've changed that for the movie!

When you think about it, it's crazy that we, as the audience, are routing for Sayuri and the chairman to end up together when he has a whole wife and kids at home. 😂 The part that he buys her sweet ice, he mentions his children briefly, but book touches on the fact that he's married.

This movie is excellent. But after watching it for years, last night for the first time, I didn't like the ending. She should have ended with Nobu. He was a good man and loved her. The Chairman was just a womanizer with good intentios 😂. Chiyo was obsessed with the first person that was kind to her. She was so broken she turned that into a romantic tale.
I dont understand, Chinese actresses as geisha I still can tolerate it, but all ppl speaking English, even the Japanese guests also speaking English, wth which dimension of Japan were they live?
It’s not a Japanese historical documentary. It’s a Hollywood movie based on a fictional book written by an American, filmed in Los Angeles, California. They want it to do big at the box office in the US which means the less amount of subtitles the better. Also why take the extra step of teaching the Chinese actors to say their lines in Japanese only then have to subtitle the whole movie for the target audience of Americans.
@@whinnc yeah the guy that wrote the book took a lot of liberties with the facts and got in trouble with the actual geisha he was talking to for revealing her name and getting the story wrong. she later on sued him and wrote her own book to set the record straight.

Nothing beats Mrs. Nitta slapping Hatsumomo with the same hand she used to check if Hatsumomo got fucked

Why didn’t Chairman offered to pay first sex with her if he loved her so much ??
Because he is indebted to his dear friend, nobu, who is also enamored with her.
He also loves his friend Nobu, who showed interest in a geisha for the first time.
Why make this in English tho and force these amazing Asian actors to speak it?
Because it’s a Hollywood film not a foreign film.
