I adored Anders in Awakening but, despite everything he did in 2, I could never bring myself to kill him. I felt so bad for him, in that he felt backed into a corner with no other solution. It really breaks my heart how they changed his character so much. For those of you wondering, if you played Awakening and gave Sir Pounce a lot to Anders, play the other expansions for DA1; your warden will have Sir Pounce a Lot in your inventory. In 2 he says he had to give him to a friend in Amaranthine...your warden is that friend.
I always find the romance options so jarring from the rest of the conversation. I mean, you can be having a yelling contest and then out of the blue you're saying corny one liners.
I find it interesting how, out of nowhere, you can be a blood mage in this game, and there are generally no repercussions or discussion about it, especially if you're in a romance (A friend romance, as well.) with Anders. You think he'd mention it or something, but nope. (I like to think my Hawke used blood magic, and thought of it as a tool. Until in Legacy, she realized she was fallowing the dark path her father left.)
Regal_Fish I know right. I thought it would also give me some brownie points with Merril, but nothing. Plus, one issue I have with Inquisition now is that there is no way of making Hawke a blood mage, at all. AND, Hawke even seems to have a distaste for it at some points.

Maybe I'm too much of a chemistry and history nerd, (and too paranoid lol) but talking about crystals from urine and feces actually made me immediately jump to 'OMG IS IT A BOMB?' XD I thought of the fertilizer bombs. Uric Nitrate is used in those, and it's similar to Potassium Nitrate. Potassium nitrate is also known as 'saltpeter' or 'saltpetre' (both spellings), which the same ingredient used in old-school black powder back in the day to help make it go boom. Remember what Anders called the pee-crystals? He called them "sela petrae" - sounds pretty similar to saltpeter doesn't it? To say the least I was way more suspicious than Hawke even had to option to be about what he wanted to use them for.
gotta love how Anders manipulates Hawke at the very end when she wants to know what he's up to. " Do you love me?" " Do you believe in the freedom of mages?" Talk about misdirection tactics.

Actually the romance thing with Anders and Fenris both seemed very Twilight-ish to me. Any time Anders and Fenris argued, especially the banter between them regarding Hawke's choice in romance had me saying "Edward(Anders), Jacob(Fenris)...shut up!"
Same with rivalry in general, telling Fenris you don’t give a damn about stopping what’s her face his former masters apprentice, gaining you +25 rivalry, is just jarring when he says he respects you later on

And yet when he actually acts sweet you see some of how he acted in Awakening and you just want him to stay like that.
I do the same, I just think of Anders in DA2 as another person with the same name, I didn't see any similarities between DA:A Anders and DA2 Anders. The fact that Justice and Anders merged together was ridiculous, I loved both characters separately but they made Justice a psychopath and Anders a hopeless romantic who hasn't got a sense of humour at all when in DA:A he was full of witty one liners and a favourite of mine :/

I think i have a theory on Anders: When ever Justice and Anders views conflict, like Anders humor vs Justices feelings toward mages, the one with the more intense feelings will win. That would explain why rivalmancing anders leads to him to regret but friendmancing him fusing with Justice since Justice and Anders now agree. It would also explain why anders' world class jokes are not as present and he's always talking about the Mage Plight
No. What happened is that since merging with Justice Anders has become more honest so he no longer hides behind his jokes - for one, two - spirits dont understand gray area of human nature, so for them everything is black and white, either good or evil. Thats both direct quotes from developers. Rivalry romance is just an abusive mess that makes him want to die and pushes him towards depression and self-destruction. That is also what developers themselves said.
I prefer the rival romances for Anders and Merrill and I equally love the ones for Fenris and I prefer the friendship one for Isabela. Though I like them all. The Anders and Merrill romances are more romantic and the Fenris and Isabela romances are hotter. Though rival Anders romance is pretty hot. In the end Fenris' voice is just too sensual for me not to want him the most. All of them annoy me at times, they are all so emotionally unstable. Alistair, Zevran, and Leliana were quirky while being more emotionally stable and capable of an adult relationships. Sebastian I found to be quite dull. I like the look of all the romances for the new Inquisition game but I think I'm leaning slightly more towards Solas.
Talie Price Haha. Yeah I found that out fairly quickly. Was very sad about that at first mostly because I feel bad Solas and a bit for Lavellan. Hopefully things won't go as badly as it looks like they're headed. Being in a depressed mood about other things then having that bombshell land I was a bit distraught for a few days. But after that I suddenly got out of the funk I've been in for a while because I actually took the time to deal with issues rather than just pretend nothing was wrong. :P My first character can only ever be Alistair's mistress because she felt that they could do more important work with Alistair as king and her as an advisor rather than being just another cog among the Wardens. I imagine they have some happiness together even if they can't be open about their relationship and Alistair is married to Anora. My Hawke is the only one who will get to have a happy ending. The more important you are and the more you do for the world the less happy you get to be in my first play through. I think I'll have a playthrough where all my characters are happy. The Inquisitor really deserves happiness after all they've done for the world... just not my first Inquisitor.

I can't do a rivalmance with Anders as a mage, mainly because of Malcome Hawkes' teachings about magic serving that which is best in mages, not base desires. I also went back and forth with the bloodmage option directly after Legacy, because unless she's big on demons (or as desperate for love and affection) as Merrill, it just seems ...wrong.

+Claire M (ompfafa) It's pretty easy. If you do it right you can have all their friendships maxed out in the middle of act 2. Just look up a guide for some quest and take those that can gain friend points for decisions and give answers they like.. like for merril and anders pro mage for fenris anti mage or neutral, Varric & Isabella funny answers and so on.

@ArsRagnarok My philosophy is to bring him everywhere and always do things you think will piss him off any chance you get. Send mages to the circle. Side with templars. Say mages are dangerous, etc. Do a save before anything comes up that may be a big event so in case you say the wrong thing and get friendship points you can re-do it. Get him max rival as early in the game as possible, flirt every chance you get and you'll be golden.
I really didn't like it that anders was the one who blew the chantry up, having no choise in it, also in the first expansion Anders was a lot more fun and very likeable.
Yeah, in Awakening, he was so fun and quirky. I'll never forget that moment when I gave him the cat, Ser Pounce-a-lot. xD Here he's just... not the same anymore. I wonder if Justice is to blame. It's really sad.
I feel sorry for the both of them, Justice was already changing before he merge with Anders, I just wish they could have been separated without either dying!!!
@Olonelily - The person I was repsonding to was wondering if Varric and Aveline can betray Hawke in the fade. I told them that fenris, merrill, and isabela are the ones that can't be in the fade if they wanted Varric and aveline to betray them.
I'm a little confused because the star dialogue option in the end (when Anders is sitting on his box) is the one from the friendship path. When I rivalmanced him it was something about him not being able to stop Vengeance, and he was talking about being taken over by the spirit. (I ended up taking him to Templar side which, although it didn't officially complete the romance, I thought was suitably tragic, and gets you another kiss.)
You get that if you help him with the Chantry. You get a bunch of stuff after the Chantry scene, where you can talk him out of his plan, but Vengeance goes through with it anyway!!

Also people need to remember the story makes a game and the story tbh ignoring the apparent "choice issue" was still well done with great companion dialogue as always XD
Yes but it might have been Justice that was telling Hawke to go away and Hawke could've given him the motivation to keep Justice back and the guy was facing the end of his life, give him a break. Also, Anders could have been chasing after Hawke because that was Anders-Anders, not Justice-Anders. You always have to remember that anders is slowly getting fused with justice so he will be a varied person

@ArsRagnarok if you take him into the fade, Justice emerges, and you can get a pretty big rivaly bonus if you accept the demons deal and give him Fenyrial
For all his whining and blubbering, Anders's sweet side for your character is so wonderful and cute that as long as he shuts his yap about the mages vs. Templars, I love romancing him
@purplezoni if you refuse to do his justice quest then he won't ask you to be fugitives together with him (mages' side) or even consider fighting along side you (templars' side).
@demongal107 Flirt with both of them, then in act 2 focus on the Fenris relationship first. When he walks out on you then focus on Anders and you can basically rebound with Anders. :)

My first character can only ever be Alistair's mistress because she felt that they could do more important work with Alistair as king and her as an advisor rather than being just another cog among the Wardens. I imagine they have some happiness together even if they can't be open about their relationship and Alistair is married to Anora. My Hawke is the only one who will get to have a happy ending. The more important you are and the more you do for the world the less happy you get to be in my first play through.
I think I'll have a playthrough where all my characters are happy. The Inquisitor really deserves happiness after all they've done for the world... just not my first Inquisitor.

I don't support the Templars; never have, I think they're corrupt and evil. But whenever I romance Anders I do rivalry. I *love* riling him up.

Anders just...really kind of annoys me. And the romance with him creeps me out. It feels very Twilight-y. "NO, Hawke, even though you only flirted with me once I'm going to hurt you! Don't love me. Stay away."

Yeah, same. My first playthrough he killed that poor girl, I was romancing him then. I can't even remember what I had said. But then in another playthrough somehow he didn't end up killing her, odd.
+Emily2351 If you have enough friendship with him you have the option to say Don't hurt her. He gets control over Justice and runs away.

Thank you soo much for putting this up! I can never say no to the guy, despite knowing the end, but it's still good to come here and see what would have happened if I did. I have to ask though, I thought there was some more dialogue with him after you do the "Justice" quest, or does that change if you say no to helping him?
I can't do a rivalmance with Anders as a mage, mainly because of Malcome Hawkes' teachings about magic serving that which is best in mages, not base desires. I also went back and forth with the bloodmage option directly after Legacy, because unless she's big on demons (or as desperate for love and affection) as Merrill, it just seems ...wrong.
The ending was the best, "The End." Nice xD

29:23 if you choose the humor dialogue option before you give him the key, then you get a different response from anders which is so sweet that i reloaded my game over and over again to watch.

+Claire M (ompfafa) It's pretty easy. If you do it right you can have all their friendships maxed out in the middle of act 2. Just look up a guide for some quest and take those that can gain friend points for decisions and give answers they like.. like for merril and anders pro mage for fenris anti mage or neutral, Varric & Isabella funny answers and so on.

@ArsRagnarok My philosophy is to bring him everywhere and always do things you think will piss him off any chance you get. Send mages to the circle. Side with templars. Say mages are dangerous, etc. Do a save before anything comes up that may be a big event so in case you say the wrong thing and get friendship points you can re-do it. Get him max rival as early in the game as possible, flirt every chance you get and you'll be golden.
I really didn't like it that anders was the one who blew the chantry up, having no choise in it, also in the first expansion Anders was a lot more fun and very likeable.
It's because he isn't just Anders anymore, not really. He's Justice now too.
When he blew the Chantry up I was kind of surprised myself, lol.
Yeah, in Awakening, he was so fun and quirky. I'll never forget that moment when I gave him the cat, Ser Pounce-a-lot. xD Here he's just... not the same anymore. I wonder if Justice is to blame. It's really sad.

@Olonelily - The person I was repsonding to was wondering if Varric and Aveline can betray Hawke in the fade. I told them that fenris, merrill, and isabela are the ones that can't be in the fade if they wanted Varric and aveline to betray them.
I'm a little confused because the star dialogue option in the end (when Anders is sitting on his box) is the one from the friendship path. When I rivalmanced him it was something about him not being able to stop Vengeance, and he was talking about being taken over by the spirit. (I ended up taking him to Templar side which, although it didn't officially complete the romance, I thought was suitably tragic, and gets you another kiss.)
You get that if you help him with the Chantry. You get a bunch of stuff after the Chantry scene, where you can talk him out of his plan, but Vengeance goes through with it anyway!!

Yes but it might have been Justice that was telling Hawke to go away and Hawke could've given him the motivation to keep Justice back and the guy was facing the end of his life, give him a break. Also, Anders could have been chasing after Hawke because that was Anders-Anders, not Justice-Anders. You always have to remember that anders is slowly getting fused with justice so he will be a varied person
MissMurder1243 you have to make sure your friendship with her is @ a high level she won't stay if your friendship is in the black or red or even just a little in the blue

@ArsRagnarok if you take him into the fade, Justice emerges, and you can get a pretty big rivaly bonus if you accept the demons deal and give him Fenyrial
For all his whining and blubbering, Anders's sweet side for your character is so wonderful and cute that as long as he shuts his yap about the mages vs. Templars, I love romancing him

@purplezoni if you refuse to do his justice quest then he won't ask you to be fugitives together with him (mages' side) or even consider fighting along side you (templars' side).
@demongal107 Flirt with both of them, then in act 2 focus on the Fenris relationship first. When he walks out on you then focus on Anders and you can basically rebound with Anders. :)
you gain mass points of friendship/approval so its counterproductive no matter how you play it.
