I believe that's actually part of the intended purpose of this movie, and her character specifically.. In the midst of an overtly religious film, she represents the questioners out there who are not firm believers, but hold out hope that there is something or someone out there that may bring us some form of "salvation". The Christians walk through the church absentmindedly giving selfish wishes, asking for wealth and fame, whereas she literally says "I ask for nothing". The only thing she does ask for is peace unto those suffering around her, and for mercy to the world, after questioning whether or not anyone is even "up there" to hear her. I think her character is geniously placed, and allows for anyone to enjoy the film whether they are believers or not.
I mean, the first lines of the song are her outright questioning or even denying the existence of God. She's just wants somone - anyone to listen to her and help those that everyone else is leaving for dead.
I like how Esmerelda looks at the crowned Virgin and thinks that she must have been an outcast at one time, and later on in the song walks past a relief of the Flight into Egypt, when the Virgin was a homeless refugee fleeing to save the life of her son.

“Were you once an outcast to?” That phrase has so much meaning , especially in the light of the Bible. Every. Single. One. Of God’s Prophets were outcasts. Jonah, Noah, Mary, Moses, they were all the lowest of the lows, and God, brought them up, showed them the way, and in biblical terms, make them in their own way, famous. Our lord works in mysterious ways, i guess.

That has to be my favorite part of the song, and it’s just very impactful because before it, we hear the people praying to God so that He could grant their own wishes, and then that part comes and it reveals that Esmeralda wishes nothing for herself but for the good of others. I’m a Catholic, and I could honestly take a leaf out of Esmeralda’s book.
this is such a beautiful contrast... she is crying out to God for the sake of her people, not even so much herself... meanwhile, the other people in the church cry out to God for wealth, and material things... Esmeralda only asks that her people will be heard, and will not be hurt any longer than they already have. The people in the church keep saying "God bless me..." And Esmeralda doesn't even ask for anything for herself, it's just so humbling and beautiful, such meaningful, soulful poetry.

Catholics are still Christian; the story is set around 1482 considering the purging of Gypsies in Paris and the original book, so this is pre-Protestant Reformation meaning that all Western Christians are Catholics but would still have been referred to as Christians for the most part, since the only major distinction within Christianity at that point was the East-West schism, meaning there wasn't enough interaction to differentiate uses of Christian denominations.
It is really touching how she doesn’t say the Virgin Mary’s name but looks at her when she starts her song (prayer ) (in Catholicism you pray to our lady, and she takes the prayers to god )

Anyone else notice that all the other people approach the windows of the saints and 'human' characters in massive glass images to pray to, but Esmeralda approaches the round, complex pattern in the glass with the shining light that shows a whole bunch of people in a circle, none bigger than the rest?
Its also associated with the Blessed Mother, if I remember correctly. Like the statue of Madonna and Child she approached at the start. And the central/largest figure in the window they're praying to is Jesus, aka God. I don't understand the OP's point...?
AlleElizabeth A year late, but I believe OP is saying that while the other people praying are praying to the glass that has figures of varying sizes in importance, Esmeralda looks to the one where every figure is the same. They all come together to form a bigger picture, which is exactly what she asks for. Equality is her truth, while for the others, their truth is that some are bigger and more important than others.

I think the best thing about this song is that Esmeralda seems to have no idea what she's doing but makes such a poignant point. She's a gypsy, so she probably isn't Catholic or any Christian denomination for that matter, but she has no one else to turn to. She even says in the beginning "I don't know if you can here me *or if you're really there* " which really shows that she thinks this is a total last ditch effort to try and find some form of hope to follow. Even at the end, she doesn't stand in the center of the light, like one would expect, she's off focus. She doesn't want to take up the center of God's light, she just asks for a small snippet for her people, not even for herself in this horrible situation she's in! She isn't asking anything for herself, she's praying for her people, her kin, hoping that maybe there is some big thing in the sky that can help her out. It's so beautiful and such an underrated song in an already underrated movie...

Lol no. Gypsies adopt the religion of the culture of the society they lived in and Western Europe at the time was homogenously Catholic. Esmeralda's act is what Catholics would refer to as most Catholic at the time, moreso than Frollo.
Also comparing the stained glass window the church goers stand at which depicts several holy figures as they directly ask for blessing while Esmaralda ends the song standing in front off a normal stained glass window with her only wish being for her peoples suffering to be acknowledged.
Why are kids movies not like this anymore? After so many years, these lyrics and these problems still are relevant to our society. The Prince of Egypt, Anastasia, Finding Nemo, Narnia, The Hunchback of Notre Dame, Monsters Inc, these are just a few of the most really influential movies I had as a kid. I wish I could give my cousins the kind of childhood I have.

@@draco4569 IMO, the current Disney executives are unwilling to take risks. They choose safest stories everyone can relate that usually revolves around family and friend bonding but not heavier theme. Zootopia might be the rare entry that they can take racism issues without being blatant. Thor 4 was the biggest offense for me because they refuse to take the theme 'loss of faith' despite having god killer as villain.
It is saddening to know that a movie like this wouldn't be made today, it would be considered insensitive or too mature for younger audiences. But this film shows how religion can be a force of a genuine good in the world. As well as how many warp the teachings of religion to justify their actions/attitude towards others (Frollo). But this scene with Esmeralda is absolutely touching to see. She is not part of the church, yet the pastor takes her in because, this place for as long as she wants, is her sanctuary. The best part is, the only thing she prays for is for the safety of her people, nothing materialistic or for herself.
I love this song. It is beautiful, and it has such a strong message behind it. This film really deals with the touchy subject of religion really well! It shows that evil can come out of religion, but also the beauty and love behind it.
I love how supportive the archdeacon is here. He doesn't care that Esmeralda's a rough-and-tumble woman, a Gypsie, he doesn't even admonish her coarse words. "No one out *there* is gonna help me" " *Maybe there's someone in here, who can* .”

What pushed me away from the religion was seeing all the hate, homophobia, and prejudice that so many older-fashioned (fundamentalist?) Christians seem to persecute against “Outcasts.” If Christianity and its followers operated like Esmeralda’s character of selflessness, only kindness, and understanding, so many more young people would flock to Christianity and not away like they are now. I agree not judging a religion off one song in a Disney movie but it’s not too bad to ask more of the religion based off of the idealistic ideals portrayed in that movie.

Faith is something people need sometimes. It helps people cope in hard times. At least, that's what I believe. I know religion isn't perfect, but this song hits a nail on the head. That Religion shouldn't be used for selfish reasons but rather for those less fortunate. If only more people saw it that way.

This song show both the merits and flaws in religion. It can grant hope, peace and strength to those who can't find it anywhere else, but it can also give a sense of entitlement and false superiority to those who seek that. Regardless of any truth that a religion may hold, man can either use it to become better people, or let themselves be corrupted. For such is the nature of man.

Yep nobody makes em like this anymore. Esmarelda is one of my favorite characters from disney. She sets a good exampel for children to be kind, look past apperances and be independant and strong. The only other coupel girls from disney that did this was Pocahontas and Tiana.

This is one of my favorite Disney songs of all time. I watched this movie for the first time last night and it just blows so many other Disney movies out the water. Esmeralda is just such a strong character and this song means so much to me as a Baptist and it's pure message that is universal to non-believers as well. It's just so powerful because look at all the others who already have everything that God could have given them praying for wealth and fame and then look at her. So honest and straight from the heart only asking for justice and fair treatment for those who are different. It just applies to the world on so many levels. I think it would be hard for anyone not to connect with this song.

I'm a former Christian myself who left the church for personal reasons, but one thing I do think that religion does for people is inspire them to be good. This song perfectly encapsulates what a Christian should be: selfless and caring for those who are less fortunate or persecuted.
This reminds me a lot of the parable of the Pharisee and the Tax Collector from Luke 18. The Pharisee, the religious man was vain and arrogant and prayed out loud so people could hear his "piety." The tax collector, a person hated by society due to his corruptness, prayed for forgiveness out of a broken and humble heart. It's not an exact parallel, but it still made me compare the two. The people here are only praying for worldly things to further themselves. The outcast Esmeralda is praying only for the protection of her people and nothing for herself. And that's one of many things I really appreciate about this movie.
I think it would be an even greater parallel if you consider Frollo to be the Pharisee later, when he prays during "Hellfire." While all the other priests are praying the "Confiteor" as a gesture of penitence, Frollo is preoccupied with praising himself and proclaiming how proud he is of being above the "common vulgar weak licentious crowd." And during the song, Frollo continues praying to the Virgin Mary about how "righteous" he is and how is the paragon of virtue, who deserves her praise. When he confesses to Mary about his desire to force himself on Esmeralda, he knows it is depraved, but tries everything he can to shift the blame to everything around him, saying how could the witch, Satan, and God himself all do this to him, the "perfect" human being.
I love the powerful message this song sends. All the well-off people in that church making trivial requests for wealth and glory, and they think they're better than the one in there asking for help on behalf of others. They even kick Quasi out when they see him because they don't think he's "worthy" of setting foot in that place. It's so sad, true and infuriating all at once.
The imagery/animation of those melting candles is strangely peaceful, I can't explain it, but, they (melting candles in general) just seem so...calming.
+IamDragonFury Of course it's calm: according to the plot, Esmeralda got trapped in the Notre Dame where she would have to spend many hours or days in a state of boredom - if nothing were to happen, of course. The producers made this scene very calm and soothing to create an enormous contrast with the follow-up "hellfire" scene.

This song juxtaposed against Frollo's song about his lust for Esmerelda is amazing. Rather heavy handed for a Disney show (😳) but still amazing. It just goes to show that sometimes the message of selfless, universal love isn't always carried by those who claim to have God in their lives.

This song is so beautiful. While I am not religious in the slightest this song does make me think. I believe it was Dumbledore who said that the two things man asks for is life and riches. As a race we are selfish creatures and quick to point out those who do not belong.
Humanity asserts itself as judge of others who are all really in the same boat as they. In the case of religion, people recognize God as judge, and therefor open their eyes to life's true pleasures and missions.
I doubt that atheists feel less pleasure or purpose. I don't even see the connection between those and judging people. It's not like I spent my whole day for people to judge.
This movie is very accurate for the time period it was set in (more than most others). The Church had become a corrupt place filled with people like Frollo, and most prayers offered by the people were often only for that person's personal gain. The Church was often closed off from the common people like the gypsies, and so they didn't know if there was truly someone looking out for them. Beautiful song as well, I think Esmeralda is my favorite Disney almost-princess.

I'm an atheist, yet I cried upon listening to this song and learning the meaning behind it. This song is just an example showing how people, who were just like us albeit in a different time period, lived their lives and how they coped through things.
As a Christian, this song resonated with me. I find myself an outcast too, I tend to be misunderstood by my peers due to just being different compared to everyone else. I be myself and they find me as weird. Not only that, but I’m a part of the LGBT community. But even so, I know I can get by with the strength God has given and will continue to give me. But other people who are not Christians need help - not necessarily to reform them, but so that their problems and discriminations can be quelled. If they DO end up becoming Christian, it’s an added bonus. But the goal isn’t reformation. It’s accepting and respecting each other and making the world a better place for everyone. God loves all of His children, even those who don’t believe in Him. “I ask for nothing, I can get by. But I know so many less lucky than I. Please help my people, the poor and down-trod. I thought we all were the children of God.”
Also, as an aside note, Christians were outcasts, once upon a time. Countless people were persecuted and stoned just for being Christian. Look at people like Stephen and Paul. Stephen was (I think, correct me if I’m wrong) the first martyr in Christian history. Paul was also in jail along with Silas for believing in God. And Paul was also persecuted near the end of his life. The way I see it, shouldn’t Christians and the LGBT community (among other minorities) get along from that fact alone? The persecuted shouldn’t be persecuting others for the same reason that they were persecuted!
You know, saying you're part of the LGBT community doesn't mean anything in the eyes of God. Communities are created and destroyed millions of times before God. What this song is trying to teach is NOT to ask for things to be better for yourself. Claiming what community you're part of misses the entire purpose of this song: to ask for God's mercy and grace to be bestowed on ALL of the less fortunate, REGARDLESS of their orientation in any capacity. Esmarelda is one of the best Disney Protagonists ever. She's beautiful, kind, caring, sassy and just amazing. She was the only one who helped Quazi when no one else would. She also has an amazing voice
One of the special qualities of this song is its power. What makes it so powerful is the humbleness of this prayer and how simple it is. Also, this is a great example of how to start a prayer if people don't know how. Esmarelda is literally speaking to God from her heart and opening it to Him. All in all, this a MAGNIFICENT song, ballad and prayer.

This song and movie were amazing! I was an Atheist when I saw this movie for the first time and this song gave me goosebumps, but the lyrics never offended me. Now many years later and getting saved as a born again Christian, I refer to this song as a symbol of what made me have a change of heart by showing compassion to those who were dealt a bad hand in life. I definitely felt something touch me in the heart because Esmeralda actually prayed(sang) from her heart to ask God to help her people who have been treated as outcasts. Now this is heart felt humility and song from the heart, that's what true worship should be, from the heart to reach out to the outcasts, even gypsies. So many religious figures like Frollo misuse it for evil and hatred but Esmeralda is definitely different because she has the heart.

Both believers, except one is cruelly wicked yet thinks his attempt at mass genocide of an entire group (in this case, gypsies) is for the better good, whereas the other always strove to help everyone, especially the unfortunate and children. As the religious song sayeth, "Whatsoever you do to the least of my people that you do unto me". In this case, _God_ *DID* _help the outcasts_ after all, because when Frollo commanded his men to seize Notre Dame herself (as the Arch Deacon told Frollo, "I will NOT tolerate this assault upon the house of God"), the magical gargoyles that Quasimodo talked to came to life yet again and assisted the bell-ringer in beating back Frollo's soldiers. Even when it came down to just Quasimodo and Esmeralda verses Frollo, Phoebus came in to make the save for Quasi, just as both he and Frollo were falling. In the end, Frollo sealed his own fate by quoting scripture when he himself committed grievous sins against humanity. In a sense, the "eyes of Notre Dame" (God) had the gargoyle give way (since gargoyles are placed on the top of churches to ward off evil, yet some evil might sneak in anyway, just as Frollo had done, claiming to do his wicked deeds in the name of God), sending Frollo to Hell (his firey demise).
I've always been inspired since rewatching this movie as an adult and appreciating it the moment where she's moving against the flow of the crowd. While everyone else asks for themselves, she stands apart. If you don't think what your church is doing is right, *stand out.* Even if you're the only one, others will see.

Often times when I listen to this song, I feel like I’m a church and I’m offering my prayer intentions to God. And sometimes I get the feeling that God isn’t hearing my prayers but I cannot give up.
RoyOskid The gyspy way of life can be taken by anyone, whether believer or not. The fact that Esmeralda, herself not technically a believer, is asking God for assistance shows the enduring presence of religious faith. People turn to religion for help in doing things they otherwise couldn't do themselves. People also turn to religion for the thought of a happiness beyond our mortal lives (the idea that we all will meet those loved ones who've gone before us in the end).

I don't believe in the Christian God, but songs like these make me really appreciate religion. Before it turned into a polemic and a war of beliefs, religion existed to bring peace of mind and teachings to the people. I think the problem is it works great on a small scale with good people. When it gets bigger and more and more people get involved, there are ever so many more opportunities for terrible people or blatant stupidity to get involved and so much more pressure not to try to stop those things in case it breaks the whole process. Everything about this song is amazing. Even though everyone is praying for themselves versus emeralda's selfless prayer, it's about longing primal need. The woman that asks for love to possess is just so raw. We never see her again but i remember her the most. Absolute raw, human need.

I see some comments on here of people bemoaning the fact that Disney no longer does hand-drawn animation, and I agree completely, especially when it comes to "The Hunchback of Notre Dame." Just look at how gorgeous the animation is. The scenery is sumptuous. You can tell that they went all out with this production. Marvelous film, definitely one of the more underrated pictures from the Disney Renaissance era.

I love the way she gives this respectful nod of her head as she says 'shouldn't speak to you' showing how stiff/uncomfortable she is at first but willing to believe, after which she commits to the prayer. It's just a really good character moment, this initial awkward 'uh, hi god...'

God was pleased when Solomon asked for wisdom and righteousness over selfish desires. Not saying that's what you should ask for in those exact words, but I would recommend asking for wisdom and discipline, and to always put God first in your life so you could use wealth for Godly purposes, rather than yourself, which comes later, as a reward. Also, you know what they say: those who are responsible with little are given much.

Religious or not, you can't deny the selfless intent behind the song.
I believe that's actually part of the intended purpose of this movie, and her character specifically.. In the midst of an overtly religious film, she represents the questioners out there who are not firm believers, but hold out hope that there is something or someone out there that may bring us some form of "salvation".
The Christians walk through the church absentmindedly giving selfish wishes, asking for wealth and fame, whereas she literally says "I ask for nothing". The only thing she does ask for is peace unto those suffering around her, and for mercy to the world, after questioning whether or not anyone is even "up there" to hear her. I think her character is geniously placed, and allows for anyone to enjoy the film whether they are believers or not.
As an Atheist, I can confirm. This is honestly one of my favorite Disney films, as ironic as that is.
I mean, the first lines of the song are her outright questioning or even denying the existence of God. She's just wants somone - anyone to listen to her and help those that everyone else is leaving for dead.
I like how Esmerelda looks at the crowned Virgin and thinks that she must have been an outcast at one time, and later on in the song walks past a relief of the Flight into Egypt, when the Virgin was a homeless refugee fleeing to save the life of her son.

That phrase has so much meaning , especially in the light of the Bible. Every. Single. One. Of God’s Prophets were outcasts. Jonah, Noah, Mary, Moses, they were all the lowest of the lows, and God, brought them up, showed them the way, and in biblical terms, make them in their own way, famous. Our lord works in mysterious ways, i guess.

That has to be my favorite part of the song, and it’s just very impactful because before it, we hear the people praying to God so that He could grant their own wishes, and then that part comes and it reveals that Esmeralda wishes nothing for herself but for the good of others. this is such a beautiful contrast... she is crying out to God for the sake of her people, not even so much herself... meanwhile, the other people in the church cry out to God for wealth, and material things... Esmeralda only asks that her people will be heard, and will not be hurt any longer than they already have. The people in the church keep saying "God bless me..." And Esmeralda doesn't even ask for anything for herself, it's just so humbling and beautiful, such meaningful, soulful poetry.

Catholics are still Christian; the story is set around 1482 considering the purging of Gypsies in Paris and the original book, so this is pre-Protestant Reformation meaning that all Western Christians are Catholics but would still have been referred to as Christians for the most part, since the only major distinction within Christianity at that point was the East-West schism, meaning there wasn't enough interaction to differentiate uses of Christian denominations.

I think the best thing about this song is that Esmeralda seems to have no idea what she's doing but makes such a poignant point. She's a gypsy, so she probably isn't Catholic or any Christian denomination for that matter, but she has no one else to turn to. She even says in the beginning "I don't know if you can here me *or if you're really there* " which really shows that she thinks this is a total last ditch effort to try and find some form of hope to follow. Even at the end, she doesn't stand in the center of the light, like one would expect, she's off focus. She doesn't want to take up the center of God's light, she just asks for a small snippet for her people, not even for herself in this horrible situation she's in! She isn't asking anything for herself, she's praying for her people, her kin, hoping that maybe there is some big thing in the sky that can help her out. It's so beautiful and such an underrated song in an already underrated movie...

Why are kids movies not like this anymore? After so many years, these lyrics and these problems still are relevant to our society. The Prince of Egypt, Anastasia, Finding Nemo, Narnia, The Hunchback of Notre Dame, Monsters Inc, these are just a few of the most really influential movies I had as a kid. I wish I could give my cousins the kind of childhood I have.

It is saddening to know that a movie like this wouldn't be made today, it would be considered insensitive or too mature for younger audiences. But this film shows how religion can be a force of a genuine good in the world. As well as how many warp the teachings of religion to justify their actions/attitude towards others (Frollo). But this scene with Esmeralda is absolutely touching to see. She is not part of the church, yet the pastor takes her in because, this place for as long as she wants, is her sanctuary. The best part is, the only thing she prays for is for the safety of her people, nothing materialistic or for herself.
Notice how Esmeralda is the only one in the entire cathedral who does not ask for anything for herself!

What pushed me away from the religion was seeing all the hate, homophobia, and prejudice that so many older-fashioned (fundamentalist?) Christians seem to persecute against “Outcasts.” If Christianity and its followers operated like Esmeralda’s character of selflessness, only kindness, and understanding, so many more young people would flock to Christianity and not away like they are now.

This is one of my favorite Disney songs of all time. I watched this movie for the first time last night and it just blows so many other Disney movies out the water. Esmeralda is just such a strong character and this song means so much to me as a Baptist and it's pure message that is universal to non-believers as well. It's just so powerful because look at all the others who already have everything that God could have given them praying for wealth and fame and then look at her. So honest and straight from the heart only asking for justice and fair treatment for those who are different.
It just applies to the world on so many levels. I think it would be hard for anyone not to connect with this song.

I'm a former Christian myself who left the church for personal reasons, but one thing I do think that religion does for people is inspire them to be good. This reminds me a lot of the parable of the Pharisee and the Tax Collector from Luke 18. The Pharisee, the religious man was vain and arrogant and prayed out loud so people could hear his "piety." The tax collector, a person hated by society due to his corruptness, prayed for forgiveness out of a broken and humble heart. It's not an exact parallel, but it still made me compare the two. The people here are only praying for worldly things to further themselves. The outcast Esmeralda is praying only for the protection of her people and nothing for herself. And that's one of many things I really appreciate about this movie.
I think it would be an even greater parallel if you consider Frollo to be the Pharisee later, when he prays during "Hellfire." While all the other priests are praying the "Confiteor" as a gesture of penitence, Frollo is preoccupied with praising himself and proclaiming how proud he is of being above the "common vulgar weak licentious crowd."
And during the song, Frollo continues praying to the Virgin Mary about how "righteous" he is and how is the paragon of virtue, who deserves her praise. When he confesses to Mary about his desire to force himself on Esmeralda, he knows it is depraved, but tries everything he can to shift the blame to everything around him, saying how could the witch, Satan, and God himself all do this to him, the "perfect" human being.

I love the powerful message this song sends. All the well-off people in that church making trivial requests for wealth and glory, and they think they're better than the one in there asking for help on behalf of others. They even kick Quasi out when they see him because they don't think he's "worthy" of setting foot in that place. It's so sad, true and infuriating all at once.

This movie is very accurate for the time period it was set in (more than most others). The Church had become a corrupt place filled with people like Frollo, and most prayers offered by the people were often only for that person's personal gain. The Church was often closed off from the common people like the gypsies, and so they didn't know if there was truly someone looking out for them. Beautiful song as well, I think Esmeralda is my favorite Disney almost-princess.

As a Christian, this song resonated with me. I find myself an outcast too, I tend to be misunderstood by my peers due to just being different compared to everyone else. I be myself and they find me as weird. Not only that, but I’m a part of the LGBT community. But even so, I know I can get by with the strength God has given and will continue to give me. But other people who are not Christians need help - not necessarily to reform them, but so that their problems and discriminations can be quelled. If they DO end up becoming Christian, it’s an added bonus. But the goal isn’t reformation. It’s accepting and respecting each other and making the world a better place for everyone. God loves all of His children, even those who don’t believe in Him.

Also, as an aside note, Christians were outcasts, once upon a time. Countless people were persecuted and stoned just for being Christian. Look at people like Stephen and Paul. Stephen was (I think, correct me if I’m wrong) the first martyr in Christian history. Paul was also in jail along with Silas for believing in God. And Paul was also persecuted near the end of his life.
The way I see it, shouldn’t Christians and the LGBT community (among other minorities) get along from that fact alone? The persecuted shouldn’t be persecuting others for the same reason that they were persecuted!

You know, saying you're part of the LGBT community doesn't mean anything in the eyes of God. Communities are created and destroyed millions of times before God. Claiming what community you're part of misses the entire purpose of this song: to ask for God's mercy and grace to be bestowed on ALL of the less fortunate, REGARDLESS of their orientation in any capacity. My friend, you are LOVED by God and if you feel like you're an outcast look again on Jesus who was discriminated by His own people. Esmarelda is one of the best Disney Protagonists ever. She's beautiful, kind, caring, sassy and just amazing. She was the only one who helped Quazi when no one else would. She also has an amazing voice

This is still one of the most powerful and beautiful songs Disney has ever produced.
One of the special qualities of this song is its power. What makes it so powerful is the humbleness of this prayer and how simple it is. Also, this is a great example of how to start a prayer if people don't know how. Esmarelda is literally speaking to God from her heart and opening it to Him. All in all, this a MAGNIFICENT song, ballad and prayer.

This song always makes me think of my grandparents, especially my grandmother ❤ it’s so beaotful and the message of this song is the best of it in my opinion. Her selflessness, her love for her people, is more important then herself, and that god love us all, children of god.
This song and movie were amazing! I was an Atheist when I saw this movie for the first time and this song gave me goosebumps, but the lyrics never offended me. Now many years later and getting saved as a born again Christian, I refer to this song as a symbol of what made me have a change of heart by showing compassion to those who were dealt a bad hand in life. I’m literally broken into pieces for everything that is happening right now in Paris. This song represents in a perfect way what Notre Dame might have seen in many centuries of history and time.
I definitely felt something touch me in the heart because Esmeralda actually prayed(sang) from her heart to ask God to help her people who have been treated as outcasts. Now this is heart felt humility and song from the heart, that's what true worship should be, from the heart to reach out to the outcasts, even gypsies. So many religious figures like Frollo misuse it for evil and hatred but Esmeralda is definitely different because she has the heart.
I find it ironic how Claude Frollo says "and He shall smite the wicked and throw them in the fiery pit" when he himself falls in.
I really don't think it was such a great idea to make a cartoon based on a book this dark, but still this song is one of the best Disney songs EVER.

Both believers, except one is cruelly wicked yet thinks his attempt at mass genocide of an entire group (in this case, gypsies) is for the better good, whereas the other always strove to help everyone, especially the unfortunate and children.
As the religious song sayeth, "Whatsoever you do to the least of my people that you do unto me". In this case, _God_ *DID* _help the outcasts_ after all, because when Frollo commanded his men to seize Notre Dame herself (as the Arch Deacon told Frollo, "I will NOT tolerate this assault upon the house of God"), the magical gargoyles that Quasimodo talked to came to life yet again and assisted the bell-ringer in beating back Frollo's soldiers. Even when it came down to just Quasimodo and Esmeralda verses Frollo, Phoebus came in to make the save for Quasi, just as both he and Frollo were falling. In the end, Frollo sealed his own fate by quoting scripture when he himself committed grievous sins against humanity. In a sense, the "eyes of Notre Dame" (God) had the gargoyle give way (since gargoyles are placed on the top of churches to ward off evil, yet some evil might sneak in anyway, just as Frollo had done, claiming to do his wicked deeds in the name of God), sending Frollo to Hell (his firey demise).
That's why people like this movie! It's Dark! There are a lot of dark Disney movies.

I've always been inspired since rewatching this movie as an adult and appreciating it the moment where she's moving against the flow of the crowd. While everyone else asks for themselves, she stands apart.

i feel so ashamed that my prayers are just like the people in the video asking for wealth, fame, glory to shine on my name, love i can possess, or God and His angels to bless me. i always pray for what i need and nothing else.
When i heard she said, " i ask for nothing..." tears dropped from my eyes. i truly believe it's the prayer that God would listen to. God our Father would love to give an ear to her words because her prayer is just the will from the heart of God.

I just noticed this when she says “ please help my people the poor and downtrodden” on their background their are four images showing Jesus life from the the flight to Egypt to his baptism. I wonder if that was on purpose.
It was absolutely on purpose. The whole point that Frollo is missing is that Jesus himself was an outcast and looked down upon in his life.
Often times when I listen to this song, I feel like I’m a church and I’m offering my prayer intentions to God. And sometimes I get the feeling that God isn’t hearing my prayers but I cannot give up.

The fact that Esmeralda, herself not technically a believer, is asking God for assistance shows the enduring presence of religious faith. People turn to religion for help in doing things they otherwise couldn't do themselves. People also turn to religion for the thought of a happiness beyond our mortal lives (the idea that we all will meet those loved ones who've gone before us in the end).

I don't believe in the Christian God, but songs like these make me really appreciate religion. Before it turned into a polemic and a war of beliefs, religion existed to bring peace of mind and teachings to the people. I think the problem is it works great on a small scale with good people. When it gets bigger and more and more people get involved, there are ever so many more opportunities for terrible people or blatant stupidity to get involved and so much more pressure not to try to stop those things in case it breaks the whole process. Happens with everything humans do, sadly.

Everything about this song is amazing. Even though everyone is praying for themselves versus emeralda's selfless prayer, it's about longing primal need. The woman that asks for love to possess is just so raw. We never see her again but i remember her the most. Absolute raw, human need.

I see some comments on here of people bemoaning the fact that Disney no longer does hand-drawn animation, and I agree completely, especially when it comes to "The Hunchback of Notre Dame." Just look at how gorgeous the animation is. The scenery is sumptuous. You can tell that they went all out with this production. Marvelous film, definitely one of the more underrated pictures from the Disney Renaissance era.
Now all they do is rehash their old stuff instead of making new, original content.
There will never be a film made like this ever again. Ever.

Was listening to it before my high school exam in 2011. Thats a great tribute to Mother Theresa. She also wanted to help the outcasts. Literally. Outcast means out of cast, means pariases. Poor pariases. Mother Theresa wanted to help them.
I love the way she gives this respectful nod of her head as she says 'shouldn't speak to you' showing how stiff/uncomfortable she is at first but willing to believe, after which she commits to the prayer. It's just a really good character moment, this initial awkward 'uh, hi god...'

God was pleased when Solomon asked for wisdom and righteousness over selfish desires.
Not saying that's what you should ask for in those exact words, but I would recommend asking for wisdom and discipline, and to always put God first in your life so you could use wealth for Godly purposes, rather than yourself, which comes later, as a reward.
Also, you know what they say: those who are responsible with little are given much.
