    Thanks so much for sharing! I have been in Criminal Justice for 3 years now and have fluctuated between being extremely passionate about wanting to go into Law Enforcement to being extremely doubtful. Glad to hear that’s it’s still a worthwhile profession from a LEO. I’ve interned with agencies and have had both cops and firefighters tell me not to do it…? Many were old and burnt out and used to policing the “old fashioned way”.

    I was a cop for 30 years, retiring in ‘97, and would NEVER recommend anyone be a LEO today. The politicians, the media and the general public are out to get you. You could literally wind up fired & in prison for the slightest transgression.

    • @copmom911
      @copmom911  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      While the things you listed are definitely problematic and stress inducing, I think finding the right agency with protections in place is also huge. Many political actions and decisions go against agency and/or jurisdictions policies and rules. And there are also serious, usually monetary consequences that ensue. So it is a balancing act but your points are very valid!

      As a retired firefighter I worked with cops my whole career. I can tell you the “older” cops were much better than what the academies are turning out today. Todays cop are condescending and have an us vs them mentality.

    • @duanejackson6718
      @duanejackson6718 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I agree. Like the Minneapolis cops that were charged with killing that guy, sound like they weren't even able to introduce the evidence showing the suspect had died most likely from a drug overdose, likely at nothing to do with him being held down, and they're probably wasn't even any weight being applied from his knee. I think every one of them went to federal prison. I'm no cop lover, but that definitely wasn't fair. They only convicted them to appease the mob.

    • @duanejackson6718
      @duanejackson6718 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@ELCLAVE300100K really isn't very much in Los Angeles, you would have trouble finding a place to rent, and you definitely couldn't buy a house there for that you would have to commute several hours every day just to find affordable housing. Montana on the other hand most agencies start out at about 65k, and that would definitely be a higher standing of living given the low prices of Montana, 65k in Montana would be middle class, and that's enough to buy a house easily. Whereas 100K in Los Angeles you would have to live like a peasant.

Fast forward 4 years I’ve started a construction company but don’t feel accomplished, still want to provide for my community while having that adrenaline rush. Because I'm totally blind, I don't think people would exactly be comfortable with the idea of me being a police officer. But according to both my academic advisers and professors at my university, with all the current and future advancements in technology along with a bit of training, I might be able to become a forensic anthropologist. I'm currently double majoring in anthropology and philosophy of science, and right now I have no idea what subfield of anthropology I want to specialize in. So far its a toss up between archeology and biological anthropology. This semester I just got my first look at forensic anthropology, and I experienced my first ever hands on lab assignments, where I could actually feel the bones, instead of just reading about them or listening to lectures. This has really helped me in better understanding the material I'm learning, and if there's a possibility that I could someday help bring peace and justice to a victim and their family, despite being blind, that would make me feel like a true contributing member of the community. And less like a berdin.

    And just in case my old high school teacher and cop Officer Ririe, is watching this, I'd like to say helloe, and thank you for all your help. As well as to that nice police lady at my university, who said high and checked on me while I was wating for my ride at one of the bus stops on kampas while it was snowing badly last November. I know that a lot of bad things are said about cops in the news, but lets not forget about the actions of the good ones who actually care about the people they serve. I wish that the media would tell more of their stories. I've lost count of exactly how many times a police officer has helped me to get across a very scarry intersection while I've been traveling. I don't know if sighted folks really understand just how daunting crossing a very busy street can be when your totally blind and have a slight hearing loss. Even with the help of hearing aids I'm pretty nervous. And on at least a couple occasions I've almost been hit by a careless driver who ran through the intersection while I was crossing and had the right of way. On both occasions they ended up running over my cane and completely busting it. And to add insult to injury they kept on going, and even had the nerve to tell me to get on the sidewalk. They are so lucky I couldn't see their F**king license plates. But such is life. At least I managed to make it across the street in one piece and am still breathing. The rest of my journey home on those occasions was also fun. Lets just say trying to use a fraggmented cane royally sucked!

    what is it like with kids? Are you very involved with their life or do you miss alot of events/time with them? this is the only thing that I am so hesitant with. I do not want to miss my kids growing up.

    • @copmom911
      @copmom911  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      I understand your concern and it can be more difficult until you have more time on and can get to more ideal family shifts. I had the time on but also did night and overlapping shifts to try to be there as much as I could when promotions threw me onto undesirable shifts and assignments. I don’t go to every single little thing my kids do, but I am there for the important things and when they want me there most, or are sick, etc. it’s a balancing act but I feel like it’s like that with any job. I would recommend seeking out a department that can give you an idea of what time frame you would be looking for for what you want. But I really feel like the only job you miss nothing with is if you are a stay at home mom. 💙
