I made sergeant at the 10 year mark, but had been an officer, FTO & detective before making rank. Made lieutenant in another five years and captain, patrol division commander, when I retired w/30 yrs. service in ‘97. Each promotion, including captain, involved participating in a competitive process. That last position kept me behind a desk about ninety percent of my time.
Is it more common for officers to prefer to stay at a lower rank where they’ll stay on the street or do more prefer to rank up into the leadership/administrative positions?
Hello, I am interested in entering law enforcement, and especially interested in K-9 unit and highway drug busts. I know theres probably not a unit specifically assigned to just that but I would like to know where you think I should start? I have been applying to different police departments of the major cities in the U.S. but I’m not sure if I should apply to state highway patrols/troopers or even homeland security for what I’m interested in. I’m 31 years old with bachelors degree and current army reservist, looking to land a gig at least 65k after academy.
Can you show the insignia's from your dept or commonly used one for the general public who may not know what they are? Or want to know the ranks of an officer they talk to? Or if there is a situation that has many ranks show up we know who the highest person so we can go right to them?
@@copmom911 How does one get on that protective detail unit? I'm interested in becoming a cop and after working in patrol for 5 years and as a detective for some years, I'm interested in joining that unit as I love adventure, travelling, strategy, threat assessment and social life. What would you recommend?

That’s great! And yes, once at the command level, the administrative work is incredibly significant
You be careful out there, I just got the horrible news from outside Mpls.
Yes it was horrible. Thank you, you stay safe as well! 💙
Toronto Police ranks are Police Constable, Sergeant, Staff Sergeant, Inspector, Superintendent, Staff Superintendent, Deputy Chief, Chief. Also Detective and Detective Sergeant
The criminal justice system is broken. For most women, being an officer is not a safe job.

I’ve seen mixtures of both

I would ask the agencies individually but your state patrol would be a great place to start 💙

Do high ranking cops like the Chief of Police, Deputy Chief of Police and Assistant Chief's have a security detail?
I believe that some do!
