- While desert cacti are built for heat and dry spells, if the temperature gets too hot for them, they can go dormant. What is summer dormancy? How can you tell if your cactus is summer dormant? What should you do? I will share my experience and my learnings in this video.

Thanks so much for all this information and the great examples! After years of having cacti I am just now learning the value of close observation - thanks to you! I have an astrophytum that was blooming profusely until last week when we entered a heat wave of 115 or higher for 6 days. The astrophytum just sat there with dozens of buds still on it, but none of them opened. Thank goodness I didn't water it, and after a couple of days I realized it must be dormancy. Yesterday the temperature dropped briefly into the 80s and sure enough, those buds started popping open again. So far I haven't lost any cacti this year, but this is just the beginning of the summer and I've got many more battles ahead of me. Thanks again for your excellent videos.

You are absolutely correct about this. I have killed many more cacti in the summer than in the winter by watering them too much. Another factor is nighttime temperatures that are over about 74 degrees. I have had much more success in preventing rot if I withhold watering during that time. This is especially true in the more humid areas like where I live in Georgia.

Great video!! Great points made!! Some Euphorbia do the same thing. The caput medusae group are known to do this in late summer. We fair a little better because we are humid here. Tillandsia love our foggy , humid nights& mornings!! We just gave to worry about torrential thunder storms giving too much water to plants outside. It all just depends on what climate you live in as to how they grow. Like you are saying. Dry vs. Humid. Thanks for the great information!!! Yes, my Euphorbias right now are not growing. But they are tough taking in all this high heat. That is one thing I like about Euphorbias. As long as they are shaded, they can easily withstand triple digit temperatures. Thank you, Clyde! 😃

Many people think growing cactus in a desert is so easy. But there are also many challenges especially when they are in pots. This is also the reason why I can’t keep soft succulents or orchids alive for a long time. 🤣 So I watch channels like yours to get my orchid and succulent fix. 😉 Thanks, Fernanda!

Oh wow! Thank you Ana for this video😊. I had no idea they can go dormant in the summer. I guess I don't really have to worry where I am located. I still struggle with when they want water😂. I even can't tell if it's growing 😂 Thank you for showing your cactus to that looked like it needed water and also for pointing out the growth with the black and red/orange spines.
Great information, I found alot of my cactus went summer dormant when I had them outside in my little greenhouse facing south-westerley...the heat was unbearable in the Summer even here in the UK...😫😄 they're a bit less dormant now they're housed indoors all the time...enjoyed hearing your experience with the desert conditions you endure 👍😊🏜🌵🏜🌵

Dear Ana, your observation is correct, that most cacti will stop flowering under prolonged heat periods.
Practically speaking here in Sudan the temperature is between 35c to 44c for the months from April to October, and thus most of the cacti do not flower, however green growth is there.

Hi Ana🤗! What a very useful and we'll explained video👌💯. In my little experience, summer dormancy starts with a bit lower temperature when you have higher humidity, in a subtropical climate with high summer temperature, maybe because this climate comes with a very unpredictable weather conditions, most of the time. I'll explain what I mean. My cacti here in the Mediterranean coast of Spain, have started to go dormant after a short heat wave of two or three days with peaks of 40°C/ 104°F and very dry winds. After that we had a rainy and cold week and temperature dropped to cooler days for a week and then rised again to 35°C/ 95°F with tropical nights. That ended in stopping most of the blooming and growth slowed down in some of my cacti. So the important thing is to know when the growing conditions are challenging for our cacti, because that's what is going to activate their survival mode. This is why I've learned to not water at all this month (that's for this year, last year everything was a month ahead, so the thing must be done when the weather is so changing). This is my most important battle at cacti cultivation and the moment of the year when I loose some cacti and Echeverias. I believe that I've learned well all the things that you told in your previous videos because this year I've only lost two little cacti babies and one of them was new in. Well explained, Vanessa. Isn’t succulents so smart?! 😉 Whenever the external conditions are not right, they will “shut down their operations” to conserve energy. You are correct. Sudden weather changes can cause dormancy as well. Although I seldom experience sudden changes here. Ours is predictable… hot or even hotter. 🥵😁 Thank you Vanessa for sharing your experience.

Thank you for this Video, now I know what have happened to 1 of my cacti. Its 1 of the of pups, That cactus has at least 10 pups, its more like burned than rotted. We went into a vey high heat spell here in BC, Canada, we are very close to Seattle Washington. The Temp reached to 39-40 degrees where normally our highest in the summer is about 30. Thank god it was only for 5 days, but it effected the some of the cacti. Now we are back to normal, the highest is 27 & @ night is 18. Love your videos & thank you for all good info you provide.😘

It’s always heartbreaking to discover a plant you’ve cared for die, sometimes so suddenly. I’ve only experienced summer dormancy with my Haworthias. They prefer cooler and mild temperatures. Luckily it’s the same here babe, just higher humidity to contend with and higher nighttime temperatures which the Haworthia aren’t keen on. Is a shame when a plant suddenly rots and dies, and sometimes we don’t fully know the reasons why. Excellent video, Ana. This is the most difficult time of the year for me. It’s hard to tell if they need more water or if I should just leave them alone. Thanks so much to both of you… Oh, maybe you both can make a video about your battle on high humidity in fluctuating temperatures. That is something that majority are dealing with when it comes to taking care of desert plants. 😃👍🏼 I would love to learn what you guys do.

It is getting more difficult to track each plant. That is also one reason why I try keep most of them in the same type of pot (terracotta). That way, they can all have the same or similar watering schedule. Thank you, Amanda and good luck with your plants. 🙂

Where I stay we have humidity around 70-80% most of the year round, and I've observed that I can go more than a month and a half without watering them becoz they absorb water from the atmosphere.

Yes, that is correct. As I mentioned in the video, if your humidity is high, you can water less often even if it is hot because cacti can absorb moisture from the air. Your soil will also absorb air moisture. 🙂

USA 4 equal seasons. I presently own 23 different cacti the variety of
cactus some I have are "Echinocereus Enneacanthus /Lobivia Schieleana
Quiabayensis / Parodia Tredecimcostata / Notocactus / /Parodia aculta /
Rebutia Flavistyla / Echinopsis Subdenudaa / Mammillaria Perbella. (I
only buy the ones that flower). I have had a perfect spring and summer
(outdoors) much fruit many flowers I am enjoying myself immensely BUT, BUT!
To say I am confused on the right way the best way to care for cacti is
a understatement because there are so many different opinions on
TH-cam. As an example of what I mean some say during the winter to
water once a month another once every six weeks another once every two
months or still another not to water at all for four months total.......

When it’s not their rest period, do you water and let it run completely thru the pot. That’s how I have started watering mine. I used Schultz liquid fertilizer. It called for 7 drops per quart of water, I used 3 drops. Our temps get into the 80’s & 90’s.
Yes, in spring and summer, I soak them all. I water until water drains at the bottom, and then I go back and water it some more. This is to ensure that the entire soil and roots get wet. And then I wait and water again only when the soil is dry again.
Should you water your cactus in a grow tent in the winter time if grow lights are on 14 hours a day
Just watch your cactus if they are showing signs of shriveling. It really depends on your humidity and temperature. 😉
Hey Anna I live in California currently but I’m moving to Missouri by the end of summer and I’m terrified of the climate change shock that my plants will go into. Any advice ??? Help 😣🌵
Oh that will be exciting. Luckily, cacti or succulents in general are adaptable as long as you do it gradually. I don’t think fall in Missouri will be too cold yet for your cacti. But in the winter, you will need to bring them indoors or outside in a greenhouse. Consider investing in grow lights and/or a heater, depending on how much plants you have. Good luck! 😉🌵

It’s not just withholding water that makes it dormant. The climate plays a big part in making a cactus go dormant as well. Gradually, as the weather gets too hot or too cold, cacti will go dormant.
@@CactusCaffeine i went on vac for 2 weeks, and my cacti went surval mode because of lack of water
when i get back, as soon as i water them, the next day, i can see my cacti getting green on top.
so im guessing they maybe did not go dormant, they still active but in "power saving" mode, whereas dormant would be "off mode", because i did water 100% capacity. if they dormant, they would have been shocked, but they showed rapid growing green.

If a cactus goes into summer dormancy, does it come out of dormancy before fall? Also could it have a fall dormancy in the same year?
In my climate, yes, they come out of dormancy when the heat subsides. In fact, I get another round of blooms (although less) during fall. Then they go dormant again when the freezing temperatures come.

Yes, if the cactus is brought to warmer temperature with ample light for several days, it will slowly start waking up again. Extreme temperatures make them go dormant.
Does it go dormant after it flowers?
Not necessarily. It will only go dormant when the external conditions become unfavorable. After flowering, many cacti will still continue to grow/offset. Thanks Connie for watching! 🙂
@@CactusCaffeine ok next week it will be in the 100’s. I have put up an umbrella to try to keep them cool. Or should I put them in my green house where I have a shade cloth. In fact I double layer it. Some of my succulents have been burned if I don’t keep them under a shade cloth.
Many of the desert cacti will take 100F. Maybe you may just need a 50% shade cloth on them. Just protect the epiphytes and the ones that don’t have so much spines, those are the ones that burn easily. 😉
