You forgot to mention that particular bow is DL specific. Sure it’s $200, but only if the DL fits. If that new archer buys this, and then finds out it doesn’t fit them, it’ll cost them another $150+ to get the right cam and have it installed. That puts them into the price point of a new Bear or Diamond that is fully adjustable, and has a warranty.
My first set up was a $200 Hoyt over 10 years ago . Worked just fine and I liked shooting it so much I bought two more over the years . The newer ones are like lasers and quiet and the difference is huge . So if a person gets good with an old bow going to a newer one is like a dream 👍👍
What would be so sweet about that? It’s a perfectly capable bow that was the best bow on the market at one time. It’s not like it’s an old 1980’s cam-less bow that shoots 220 FPS. This bow shoots just as good as a lot of the bows on the market today and thousands of hunters still use this same bow to kill deer every year.
@@jimlahey3919 It would be awesome to see someone like Chris who can go get whatever bow he wants and whatever equipment he wants, to use something that is very obtainable for the average person. 99% of hunting content that is out there being produced now adays is people shooting brand new off the line bows. So it would be nice to see new content being produced with middle of the road stuff. Some folks might want to see the equipment that they can afford be used to harvest deer because thats what they do.
you should do an accuracy test between a whisker biscuit and a drop away rest do about 50 shots of each with the exact same bow same setup just different rest
I have a 2008 Ross Cardiac that I purchased new and it is a tack driver still to this day. As are the two that I got for my sons back then. They still shoot them. Great bows for that period in time.
I just got a BowTech Admiral with a react 5 pro. Like new $425 after shipped. I let it down lubed it up,cleaned it up, paper tuned it and it's way nicer then any budget line I've ever owned. Those deer better watch out this year!
My dad had that Mathews bow for a long time and killed so many bull elk. It definitely goes to show it’s the shooter and not the bow. Of course technology has helped with many things, but it also goes to show that it doesn’t have to be expensive to get into archery in general today. Awesome video Chris.🤝🏽🐝
Just got my first bow in 15years from a pawn shop, was looking at nos v3’s but couldnt stomach a 1500$ rig having not shot in that long. Ended up with a bowtech convergence with everything to hunt and target shot including a halfdozen 300 spine fmj, broadheads, lumknocks etc for 300$. Couldn't be happier!
I believe that bow came out around 2000 and that was the first Mathews bow I ever bought and loved it. I shot it for 14 years before I sold it and now I wished I hadn’t.
I understand that this is a older video. My current bow is a Hoyt Rambo from 1986. Got it at a yard sale some 20 years ago as a 12 year old. Never really did anything with it until this year. With it, I am able to hole a 8 shot group in a paper plate at 75 yards. I know it’s now amazing but I’ve only been doing this since January of this year (2023). So yes old school bow still work with old school sights, rests and peeps.
If anyone who reads this is thinking about getting into archery…I would advise that right out of the gate you spend the money on the best sight, rest, stabilizer, and release you can afford. Those things can easily transfer from bow to bow, and the good ones last forever. I am shooting an old Toxonics Target sight from 2002. It does everything modern sights do (hold a scope and move up and down consistently) and has been on 6 bows that I’ve owned over the years. Same with my stabilizer setup and arrow rest. Buy quality on the accessories, and move them from bow to bow as you progress through the sport. Either that or get you a decent barebow recurve rig and learn to stringwalk. But a quality modern barebow rig will set you back around $750 before arrows. You can get them for less by going with an Olympic Recurve riser, and just shooting it barebow, but you are compromising a bit doing that way. No matter what, have fun flinging arrows.
I bought a 2013 elite archery pulse with a sight, rest, and stabilizer for $140 it had a decent iq bowsight with the retnalock and a nice drop away rest. This bow was what got me into archery and hunting
So Chris, I still shoot a Matthews FX at 62lbs and still love it.... It shoots about 280fps with 400gr arrows. The Q2 would have been an upgrade for me... lol. I had new cables and string put on last year and I good for another 5-10 years... I used to live in MT and purchased it there back in 2002 or 2003. We used to practice at 65 yds in MT, but I live in PA now, so long shots are much more rare now a days. Glad you are showing people how to get started on a budget.
The Q2 was my first mathews way back in the day it was the start of a long mathews history for me. I remember how pumped up I was about it! It was top of the line back then! Crazy how far they've came.
I’m still shooting a Mathews Outback I bought new 16 or so years ago. I’m just cheap or stubborn or both. It keeps shooting and it keeps killing deer and wild turkeys. Maybe Ill finally upgrade this year….but I doubt it. Great video as usual, although I feel really old…even retro right now.
The first time I shot a Q2, i was amazed by how I felt nothing compared to the dual cam/upright limb bows of the days. That was back in 2001 - 2002. Still have an sq2 that I shoot occasionally, and its amazing how much it vibrates compared to the stuff today, yet felt so dead in hand back then.
I still shoot an SQ2. I added a dead end string stop to it. Still a phenomenal bow. Many times I’ve been able to get a second shot off at deer it’s so quiet.
I’m curious to see how I like the Q2 as I just inherited my grandfathers Q2 that he took his trophy’s with and I’m already itching to constantly shoot after just one day shooting for the first time. Need a different cam but I can already tell I archery haha
I have used a lot of pawn shop gear for both archery and rifle hunting. For years that's all I could afford. Now I buy good gear but I keep it for a long time. I don't do the new bow every year think. I did by a V3 recently as a replacement for my DXT from 2008 (yes I still shoot the dxt, and it still looks and shoots like the day I bought it). Taken care of they last a very long time
I have used a 2006 PSE Fire Flite 33 for 15 seasons and mostly just upgraded some of the components especially the sight, got a new whisker biscuit and then a custom bow string. Upgrades over time is a great way to go
My best indoor NFAA score is with a Mathews Signature (1996). My grandpa found it for $50 at a 2nd hand store. It has a Walmart bargain- bin drop away rest, and eBay-purchased sight and hunting bars. The most expensive thing on the bow is the strings.
I bought an '08 Mathews DXT 6 years ago for $250 on Craigslist. It came with a really nice drop away rest, trophy ridge sight, case, stabilizer, arrows and broadheads. For a xouple years I shot it like it was. Killed a mule deer doe both years. Then I bought a new cam to take it from a 29" draw to 30", bought a new string, single pin sight, built some arrows and tuned it. 6 years later, with some tweaking, my bow shoots 85 yards with the single pin. With a 3 pin slider I could easily get out to 95. It's maxed out at 73 lb. I kill a mule deer almost every year. I shoot pretty competitively with the big boys in my area at the range. I'm shooting in my first 3D tournament in 2 weeks. I have high hopes. After this season I'm going to mess with the string and cables to increase draw weight and buy a 3 pin slider. Eventually I'll upgrade to the new mathews platform. Hopefully they come out with an 80 lb option soon.
Q2 was 01 or 02, they were great bows in their day and though not as adjustable its still probably better quality than most budget friendly bows of present time.
I picked up a Reflex Timberwolf from the local archery shop last year to extend my hunting season. Nothing wrong with the old stuff as long as it was taken care of!
No way, I bought a q2 used like 5 years ago as my first bow.. fantastic rig, I shot the new bows every year and never thought I needed one until the traverse came out
What a great video, I agree 100%, an old flagship bow is better than a new entry level bow. I have a pair of 2013 Stinger 3G’s that I love, but I picked up a 2008 Mathews Conquest 3 cheap to play with and it shoots and feels like a Ferrari to me! 🤣 I love the simplicity of the solo cams and have fun shooting all 3 now, I shot custom recurves only, for 25 years until I hurt my shoulder so any semi modern compound feels like I’m on the cutting edge of archery technology! I love your channel, you are so good for archery and young shooters, such a selfless archer and role model! I just watched you kick butt at the Lancaster steel Elk shoot, I order from those guys a lot, also the guys at their pro shop are awesome to talk to but I was pulling for you, that was to good! 😎
I bought a 2007 Diamond Triumph a couple years ago. Came with a Plano hard case, and a dozen Gold Tip Hunter XT 340 arrows. All for $175. Added a new string and cable, a new peep, and a nose button. And with a minor draw length adjustment, I had 3 inch groups at 35 yards after 20 or so shots. Went in to find an X box for my Grandson and walked out with the bow too. I couldn't pass it up.
My grandson 14 years old switched from a crossbow to my old switch back and shot a nice eight point last year they might be out of date but they still get the job done this was a good video not Have to Always spend the big money to get into Archery thanks again
Coincidence I was looking on Amazon for a bow so I can get into archery. Five minutes later I stumbled to this video. Subed and that build is a beautiful for 2 bills. I’ll be checking out pawn shops now.
Recently got back into bow hunting. Ended up picking up a bowtech carbon zion. Stan onnex thumb release, HHA single pin. Bow came with a apex 5 arrow quiver, trueglo multipin which i knew off the bat i wouldn’t like too much shit in the sight and a qad ultrarest. This kit was put together by my local bow shop. Went with the easton sonic 6.0 high velocity arrow. Just need to get out and shoot it more then pick up different heads for hunting.
This is awesome! I tell people all the time that talk about getting into archery to buy a cheap used bow to get started. Pretty much any bow out there will shoot and kill a deer if that’s what you are going for. I just traded my 07 Mathews Drenalin (killed great mule deer last year) for a V3X and I can’t wait to smoke some deer this fall! Keep up the great content.
I'm just getting into Archery hunting and plan to hit up pawn shops and my local Archery shop's used section. Like anything else, equipment will last and do well if it's properly cared for
My son just joined the ATL Archery Learning Center. He has already decided that this is going to be HIS sport.

I still have got my first US made compound bow from my collage years. That is a 2005 PSE Deer Hunter. Probably the most forgotten and the lowest quality bow that PSE ever produced. I still have fun with that. However I have the absolute high end laminated Hungarian bows the Fekete Bég. With the 50# draw weight one I already have several hits on a 100 square foot target area designated with a flag in the middle of it out to 196 yards and I were hit a man size target 262 yards. The 70#-one is on the way. I hope my master finish it and give it to me on the Kurultaj in August. (Take it like a Native American pow wow but 16 countries participate so this ones is a wee bigger). The long range archery I mentioned is a historical competition style based on military target practice of the Hun, Mongolian ect. army in the past. For compound bows I don't think I will ever go any higher. For Hungarian bows I am already on the high end. I can imagine these bows feels for you like cheap fiberglass Hungarian/Turkish/Mongol bows feels for me. I never had a chance to try a flagship compound bow. Or just see one from closer to be honest. So everything you do is pretty interesting for me.
@@OpiatesAndTits I shoot most time arrow on left and tree finger under for long range between 196 and 262 yards. This military style long range archery is my main thing to do. The target is an enemy flag and whoever land the arrows closer to the flagpole is the winner.
the PSE Supra Max with ME Cams is the best low budget bow for beginners IMO. It's regularly available on archery Talk for 250$, it has an adjustable cam from 25.5-30.5", it's fairly quick and still holds up today. Make sure to get the Max with the upgraded riser though, it is much sharper looking. It's the one with the flex cable guard.
I bought a Q2 on eBay for $212 earlier this year and brought it to a bow shop and they were surprised how good of shape it was in. My first bow since I was about 10 years old and I plan on going hunting this weekend
Pretty cool to see y'all shooting an old Q2! I have had a Q2 for about 15 years and shot my biggest buck to date last year with it. My hope is to upgrade to something like the Phase 4 in the next year. Keep up the great work with the videos!
Oh yeah. The old Mathew's solocam. I remember back in the day, that was their thing. It's hard to imagine how far bow technology has come. I do have an old Hoyt that's not much newer than this old Matthew's. It's a 2006 Trycon XL. Haven't bothered upgrading, as I prefer my Ravin crossbow. In my state, we can hunt through the whole deer season with a crossbow, just the same as any vertical bow.
About 2 weeks ago I was able to find a $2000 set up for $600. I picked up a hoyt ventem 30 with a black gold rush sight, hamskee rest, tight spot quiver and Spyder 10" stabilizer. All from my local pawn shop. It was an amazing deal!
I have this bow 😄. But have diasembled it by now. Shooting another lower level bow an Obsession hb33, with an Axcel accu touch sight. Love it. Accurate enough out 50 meters. In Denmark it is illegal to shoot animals father than 25 meters. And when You get your license we are learned that 20 meters should be our maximum.
Juat picked up a helim its retro and i love it. The man i got it from had it all set up took some deer goat and pigs and hurt his shoulder and put it in a hardcase and there is sat for years in perfect condition. I only paid 450 aud. So stoked.
Pawn shops are the best way to find good deals, most shops have no idea of the value, gave little to nothing for them, and nothing really can be wrong with the bow, with exception of stings and cracks in limbs I bought an Elite Answer loaded out with a react sight, qad rest, and Cbe stabilizer bars, and brand new winners choice strings.
bought my first bow 2 weeks ago at a discount store a full decked out Topoint R3 for 50 bucks! ive put money into my Kit and try to go to the range once a week im hooked
I picked up a 2017 Bear Threat RTH for 80 bucks at a local pawn just today. Great shape and has brand new strings. I couldn't believe it. They said it has been there for months. First put it out at 350 bucks but just don't sell bows so kept lowering the price. Funny thing is, there is an archery pro shop literally next door
Just picked up a year old PSE Brute NXT added a Trophy Ridge sight I had laying around (to fix the broken sight that was on it and bought a QAD hunter and had it set up at my local shop all for under 250.
Mission makes the best budget bows on the market imo… I absolutely love my MXR. Worth it to spend a little more and get newer quality gear. Plus mission is really just a mathews bow anyways lol
I got an older Excalibur recurve crossbow with a bad string on it for like 60-75$. It’s a 1000$ crossbow. 12$ string and it’s new. It’s a little heavy but should last 4 or five life times. Then the strings went on clearance for like 4$ At cabelas so I bought about 4 of them. Plus I’m good to use it at the pioneer weapons area. I’m still stoked about it and it was years ago.
I just saw one of these at my local scheels all setup for 100. If you can find one in your draw length these older bows can be had for cheap and they’ll still kill a deer just fine. For anyone looking for a first bow just make sure you know your draw length and what weight limbs you can handle. Otherwise look for bows with a lot of adjustability in draw length and weight like most Mission bows.
I wish you had just left it as it came from the pawn shop. By the time you were done changing out components for modern equipment you ended up with an almost $800 bow, and that isn't even in the same ballpark of a budget as $200. I suspect that there are several modern RTS bows that would be a better option for $800. I do enjoy your content, just think you missed the mark on this video.
He actually nailed it. He shot better with the basic set up than when he added 600 dollars worth of stabs and a sight on. Even went back to the wisker basket. And as he mentioned at the end, that q2 was top notch back 20 years ago when it came out. Better than any 600 dollar package bow you'll go to cabelas and buy.
My first bow was a PSE thunderbolt with single lightening cam 60# . It had same single cam design technology and performance as the Mathew’s bow , but cost half as much !!!
My first bow was a pawnshop bow. The beginning of my addiction, I don’t intend to seek out help for. The only thing I need help for is for my local pro shop to point me in the right direction to the new bows😂 in which they gladly do.
I'm still shooting my 2011 Heli-m (also a solocam). Zero desire to change to a newer bow. If you don't have your own fully kitted bow shop, it's hard to beat a single cam bow.
A buddy who is always admiring my bows but can't pull 60-70lbs (older neighbor, disabled Vietnam vet) came over yesterday with a vintage AMF Impact he picked up at a local garage sale. That thing was a TRIP to shoot and tune! He can play with that one for a while, and then we'll get him a low(er) poundage newer model later. Isn't AMF the old bowling ball company??? That's crazy.
Great video, I’m still shooting a Matthews Feather Max I purchased in 1997. I’m trying to save up for a new one now. It’s crazy how my first bow had 2 cams then Matthews swore by solo cams now everything is back to 2 cams.
Just remember man this bow was once top of the line so was that sight and peep.. be glad you grew up with the setups you did. That slow bow your shooting is what we drooled over owning
i got a browning summit 2 handed down to me from my grandpa still havent shot it yet no pro shops in my area to get setup for me i havent hunted with a bow yet but i used to do slot of 3d shoots 19 years ago. my first compound was a PSE spyder when i was 10.
So funny. I was doing stuff so my youtube auto played this video and i just got this bow a few weeks ago from the app letgo. Came with a dozen arrows, a case and 2 releases and a few other things. $100. Almost feel bad. Its pretty fun bow though
I have an old Golden Eagle that I still use that was my grandfathers. Its still about an inch too long but modules are next to impossible to find for them. Picked up myself an old Hoyt Rampage new in box for like $200 which I use for target and hunting. Cant beat a good bow.
Don't try this at home unless you have an experienced friend to help with the tune up. Most pro shops will be more than helpful, but buy something from them. This is what I try to find for my friends who aren't addicted yet. My skill level doesn't justify 2500 to 3000 for the latest and greatest. New old stock from eBay sellers is my favorite source.
I got into archery/bow hunting about 3 years ago and I bought this same bow off a guy I worked with, new string/cable set up, iq bow sight, whisker biscuit, and does pretty good which when your hunting for your family on a low budget it gets the job done 👍🏻 glad im not the only one that the bow shoots a little wonky out to 50 yards, thought it was just me being a new bow shooter but this video gives me a little bit of a better idea. Awesome videos 👍🏻
I still rock my 07 Bear instinct. Luckly no cracks and I can still find wellmade replacement strings. Im looking to upgrade at some point to a used mathews.
I think it would be cool to see someone put on a 3D shoot for the top tier pro’s and have them shoot they’re favorite bow from their current sponsor and they all have to shoot the same year’s bow but it be from the 2,000’s and see how they do. Give em like a month to prep for it or something I bet it would be sweet
Looks like the spacer block was installed on the QAD. That's why it's sticking into the arrow path. Also, you should have put two full twists into the left yoke for that nock left tear.
I was watching the realtree crew slay with these bows back on Monster Bucks VHS tapes. At the point the bow technology had gotten good enough to do incredible. Doesn’t match up with modern bows but these bows did fabulous at killing deer and there is no reason they wouldn’t do the same today.
I must admit that I'm now sort of binging Chris Bee videos. Fun and different content than others while still doing a lot of shooting. Really enjoying this.
I had a mathews fx i bought used for $500 and I liked it. Few yrs later I bought a Hoyt rampage that someone traded in to the archery shop when I was there and I immediately bought it for $450. Killed a lot of deer with both of those bows. The bow I have now is a mathews halon 6 I had built in 2016 and I have $1650 in it. I like it but honestly if I had to do it over again I would’ve kept the $450 Hoyt. Yes the halon is much better but the Hoyt obviously was much cheaper and it wasn’t as touchy as the halon is.
I had the same bow growing up. I hunted with it from when I was 15 to 17esh (I’m 19), I loved it and shot every thing from squirrels to bucks

I second that motion!
Just watch an old hunting dvd, lol.

I picked up a low mileage Mathews Conquest 4 last year for $275, and it shoots great. Not a speed bow ,but a very accurate bow that is a joy to shoot.
I want to see a full shoot off with Chris and Duds with bows from the late 90's early 2000's!!

I picked up a Reflex Timberwolf from the local archery shop last year to extend my hunting season. Nothing wrong with the old stuff as long as it was taken care of!
My dad gave me his old Jennings XLR that’s like 30 plus years old. Been shooting ever since and loving it! Definitely gonna upgrade!
No way, I bought a q2 used like 5 years ago as my first bow.. fantastic rig, I shot the new bows every year and never thought I needed one until the traverse came out
That looks like an old Mathew’s Swichback I had. One of the best bows I’ve ever had. Killed a lot of deer with that bow.
My last three bows came from pawn shops. Ritual 35, vxr and RX3. Paid 1000 combined over the years. Also most came w top end sights and drop always
This is just like the compound bow I got. 200 buckaroos and shoots great for a budget beginner bow once I tuned it up to my own specs.
Shoot thumb release extra arrows in bow hand?
How'd the hunt go
@@commenthero2514 I shot a button buck after and hour and a half of waiting. It ran about 100 yards and followed the blood trail all the way there
Pretty cool to see y'all shooting an old Q2!
So stoked.
just found you today as i start my compound bow and archery journey. love your content
Pawn shops are the best way to find good deals, most shops have no idea of the value, gave little to nothing for them, and nothing really can be wrong with the bow, with exception of stings and cracks in limbs
I bought an Elite Answer loaded out with a react sight, qad rest, and Cbe stabilizer bars, and brand new winners choice strings.
I have a matthews q2 and still use it to this day. Works great
The Q2 was started in 2000. I just put a new GAS string on my Outback about 3 weeks ago, still works great
I’m telling you the biscuit is flawless no mechanical parts can’t go wrong lol
I still have a DXT I bought new. It's in like 95% good shape. I shoot it once in a while. Amazing how much bows have improved.
I have an old Mq32 that I shoot, but has new accessories on it, like a qad mxt rest, black gold sight..etc. love that little bow
bought my first bow 2 weeks ago at a discount store a full decked out Topoint R3 for 50 bucks! ive put money into my Kit and try to go to the range once a week
im hooked
I picked up a 2017 Bear Threat RTH for 80 bucks at a local pawn just today. Great shape and has brand new strings. I couldn't believe it. They said it has been there for months. First put it out at 350 bucks but just don't sell bows so kept lowering the price. Funny thing is, there is an archery pro shop literally next door
I bought a Mathews solo cam from a homeless guy for 20 bucks! Did a full tune up on it and hunted with it for 2 years! It’s still my back up bow!
I have a friend who actually started bow hunting with bow from a pawn shop. He built it for only like $150 and it's a great deal for that price.
I have one of those and it is crazy how those older bows can hold a group just like my 2022 bow.
Lol
That last statement you made is 100% what I tell all new archers that ask me advice on what to buy.
I STILL have a Q2. Mine was bought in 2003 and it was a "speed burner" at the time lol
That tinking noise when drawing is coming from the yoke bushings, take them off and grease them.
"With a couple little tweaks"
Proceeds to put on 800$ worth of accessories on the bow
I loved my Q2, it was like Mathews it bow back then. Was pretty smooth.
You have a spacer on that qad if you take that off it will fit just fine
I just saw one of these at my local scheels all setup for 100. If you can find one in your draw length these older bows can be had for cheap and they’ll still kill a deer just fine. For anyone looking for a first bow just make sure you know your draw length and what weight limbs you can handle. Otherwise look for bows with a lot of adjustability in draw length and weight like most Mission bows.
I want to buy a bow for hunting monkey stealing my fruits back in Africa, please can you direct me the name of that bow,son i can buy it!
Thanks
Definitely Missed the Mark his was trying to achieve to begin with 🏹👎
My first bow was a PSE thunderbolt with single lightening cam 60# .
I actually owned this model of bow it shot really well for me absolutely loved it and used it for several years
Love this video! Hope more people will get into archery because of you sir!!! Thanks for the video
I'm still shooting my 2011 Heli-m (also a solocam). Zero desire to change to a newer bow. If you don't have your own fully kitted bow shop, it's hard to beat a single cam bow.
Q2 is around 2000-2001ish. I sold them at the shop along with the Q2 XL, MQ32, black max and FX. Find a Black Max if want to try an old speed bow.
Still own and hunt with my q2 been killing deer with it for almost 15 yrs. Probably will be replacing it with another Mathews in the near future.
You need to hunt with that thing!
Great video, I’m still shooting a Matthews Feather Max I purchased in 1997. I’m trying to save up for a new one now. It’s crazy how my first bow had 2 cams then Matthews swore by solo cams now everything is back to 2 cams.
My dad has the same bow. Accept my dads is this same bow but he bought it along time ago. But his has some upgrades and his was like 400
I bought Sq2 for a $100 and had it set up for my nephew, he loves it!!!
That’s my bow! I have it, Mathew’s legacy solo cam. I’ve been using it for years can’t afford to upgrade and for what I do I don’t need too.
I hunted with Joel Maxfield when he was product manager Ultra lite 1996, I had serial no.47 , MQ 1 in 19987-98
I had the Q2XL! That bow was a shooter for sure!!!!
the very first compound i ever had was a $30 browning cobra xl series i picked up at a thrift store and works flawlessly
I still rock my 07 Bear instinct. Luckly no cracks and I can still find wellmade replacement strings. Im looking to upgrade at some point to a used mathews.
17:41 I literally said that when I saw the sight 😂 I got a good chuckle
shot my First bow deer with a q2.. in 01. it was made from 01-04. Awesome bow for the time
I think it would be cool to see someone put on a 3D shoot for the top tier pro’s and have them shoot they’re favorite bow from their current sponsor and they all have to shoot the same year’s bow but it be from the 2,000’s and see how they do.
Man, I still have my Bear Whitetail II from when I was 12 years old. Talking about a SLOW bow.
